I was born in August 1978, i am getting old but something about the Grateful Deads’s music has frozen time while I am listening to them. i feel like in 1992 I was there in the late 60’s-early 70’s. I love it everytime I hear those early 70’s tunes. I can picture my parents hanging around a campfire and them making love and that is why I am here. Thanks to the Grateful Dead.
Man I don’t know why but halfway through rider I started tearing up, it’s so beautiful and seeing someone enjoying it for the first time was awesome. ‘I know you rider’ was penned by an unknown 18 year old black woman in prison for murder in the early 1900s, now 100 years later her words are still being listened to and adored.
I cry almost every time I watch these reactions. Ha! It feels so good to watch someone experience the music for the first time. It makes me feel all the way back to when I first felt home at a show! It's incredibly beautiful. Thanks Jamel!
Phil’s progressively dropping octaves leading up to that 3rd verse in China’s Cat. The dude understood space and time so well that he never abided by the rules. He manipulated them to create his own textures with bass. Which is a rare thing. Lots of pros emulate his sound and setup to this day because it was hifi bass before there was even a thought of it.

So glad you can feel the connection with this music. They were incredibly important to my development in life. 1st concert, January 1971, Junior in H.S.
My first ever concert ever at the Nassau Coliseum in 1973 I think. Soon after Europe 72. Never heard better. How could a first concert at that time of their playing ever be topped? Never was...
Robert Hunter the lyricist said he just wanted to show he could put random words and thoughts together that sounded beautiful. He said he could do this forever.
With the Grateful Dead it was all about the moment. Nothing planned, never a set list, go where the music takes you. They never played the same song exactly the same way. There was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert. They were the only band I know of that allowed a taping section. People would bring their recording equipment to the concerts and record the show with only encouragement from the band. Some of the best times ever were at Winterland in San Francisco.
I have been to many Dead show back in the day - 70's and 80"s. The vibe at the concerts are unlike anything, anywhere, ever. Truly grateful for the experience of it - humanity at its best. Love, love, love. Bliss.

Jamel, I'm so happy you love the Grateful Dead!! They have a distinct sound and it evolved each decade staying fresh throughout!! They gave us a wealth of music over the years and also a community that is still growing and evolving to this day!!! Hey Now!!!
UNBROKEN CHAIN for sure. I think I've suggested it here. If anyone asks me, What your favorite DEAD song?, it's my personal favorite. And even though the Dead preferred to be live than in studio, I think the studio version is s a knockout. And I saw them perform BOX OF RAIN live for the first time in over a decade in Hampton. Talk about a huge deadhead reaction!
@@robertjewell9727 "Unbroken Chain" is also the first song that had a legally licensed Grateful Dead sample, which went to Animal Collective for "What Would I Want Sky". The sample consisted of a single word sung by Phil Lesh ("Sky") and a couple of "whoas."
Jamel, you rank among You Tube royalty! Thank you so much for this. And, it's official. Anyone who plays two classic Dead jams in two days is an official Deadhead. You are now driving the bus!!! It's okay but it missed the mark. They don't cover Pigpen much at all and that was such an important time in the Dead's history. I'd read Phil's book "Searching For The Sound" for a great history of the band.

I have a brother & sister pair of tuxedos: the boy is named China Cat Sunflower & the girl is St. Stephen, but it was my darling Russian Blue Nikolai who was the true dedicated Deadhead, we listened to Dark Star together several times a week, the Woodstock version was his favorite. My cat knew & loved their music.

They do have some sad songs...that are at the same time very beautiful....They were masters at songs about all aspects of life....and death. Grateful Dead songs that almost always make me cry...Stella Blue, China Doll, Days Between, So Many Roads, Broke Down Palace, Attics of My Life.
So cool watching you discover all of the music that played such a big role in my life growing up.. Robert Hunter was such a great story teller and the dead were the perfect outlet for those stories/songs

Your love is lifting me higher than I ever been lifted before.
"No matter where you come from - music unites" - you said it man. Glad we have this in common bro! Keep on keepin' on!
Ay Jamel, thank you for putting this positivity out there my brother. World needs more of you
Ain't nothing like a Grateful Dead show🎶✌️♥️
How I miss those summers of back to back shows, peace loving crowds all grooving... no problems except for the cops

Gavin Paterson did you see Babatunde Olatunji perform with the dead? I was just commenting how much I loved the rhythms he brought
@@333AppalachiaEnergetics no never did. My main shows back in the day were midwest and southern. Never made it to West coast.
@@gavinpaterson1853 I was in the south east so stayed on the east coast for shows. We didn’t have the money to go too far!
I have been to many Dead show back in the day - 70's and 80"s. The vibe at the concerts are unlike anything, anywhere, ever. Truly grateful for the experience of it - humanity at its best. Love, love, love. Bliss.
This is why you’re my favorite reactor! You appreciate the dead and you have an awesome attitude. Keep it up!

My favorite era of the Dead! The Europe '72 recordings are absolutely phenomenal, and it's fortunate for the world that all of these 22 shows are available in clear 16-track glory.
You always make it feel like I'm listening to these songs with a friend, you're great
Jamel, I'm so happy you love the Grateful Dead!! They have a distinct sound and it evolved each decade staying fresh throughout!! They gave us a wealth of music over the years and also a community that is still growing and evolving to this day!!!
Hey Now!!!
My fave Grateful Dead song! "Box of Rain" is a close second. Then "Unbroken Chain"...
I second both of these! Need them immediately!
Yes! China cat, Box of rain & ripple ... & Bobby McGee

Welcome to the Grateful Dead family. Thanks for posting!
Jamel, you rank among You Tube royalty! Thank you so much for this. And, it's official. Anyone who plays two classic Dead jams in two days is an official Deadhead. You are now driving the bus!!! As Jerry said, "We're like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but those who do really like it a lot". I guess you're a licorice liker from way back! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I've been a Deadhead for 50+ years and it's always great to see a new member.
I teach high school and every year I make my kids listen to this. They all go .... WOW!!!
I'd highly recommend What A Long Strange Trip documentary on Amazon prime.
It's sooooo good.
And the Grateful Dead Movie
And Alpine, Down here from here.
It's okay but it missed the mark. They don't cover Pigpen much at all and that was such an important time in the Dead's history. I'd read Phil's book "Searching For The Sound" for a great history of the band.
I’ve watched it twice and would gladly watch it again, especially with some one that has t seen it.
“even is you feel good, i wanna make you feel better is the vibe i get from them”
well said
What your doing for GRATEFUL music by sharing it to a whole other generation they need to open up a spot for you in the RocknRoll Hall of Fame. You n yours be safe peace my brother. 🤪😎✌🥀✨🐻🐻💀💀👍🎸🎙🥁🎹🌈✌

ruclips.net/video/TP8qSe3b5Kw/видео.html I agree with the recommend, especially since you are appreciate lyrics so much
I was going to say that too!
Jamel the Wharf Rats are a group of sober Dead Heads. I traveled with them from show to show. We were never treated differently by other Dead Heads for our choice to stay clean. These shows were family and love of music.
way down down
He needs to do Dark Star>Wharf Rat>Dark Star>Me And My Uncle from 2/18/71
you have figured it out ! "even if your happy I want to make you happier, even if you feel good I want to make you feel better, come one come all" I think you are officially a Deadhead my friend
Responding from my daughters RUclips account. What an awesome thing you are doing man. It’s amazing I can sit here and watch you listening to a song I’ve listen to 1000 times and it’s like listening to it for the first time again. Check out eyes of the world on the live album without a net
"such a feel good band. even if you're happy, we here to make you happier"
I Know You Rider is a traditional blues song that can be traced to the 1920s if not earlier. A whole lotta people been keeping great music alive for many a year. You have joined the ranks of music lovers in a noble tradition.
I’m crying. What a beautiful message at the end
Hunter claimed the lyrics to China Cat were dictated to him by his pet cat -Believe it or Not -
Also that it was an homage to Dame Edith Sitwell...She wrote poetry that was somewhat like this.
I don't have a cat but I do have a CryptoKittie named Diamond Eye Jack.
Hunter had a pet cat named “believe it or not” in the 60s? That’s crazy!
Following the guys around were some of the best times of my life. Their music always takes me to a good place. A happy place. A content place. Because that’s how I felt at shows. It brings me joy to see you get joy from them. ✌️✌️✌️
Their music changed & SAVED my life. So happy that you’ve discovered the Dead, my friend. It’s like getting to join the most amazing conversation on earth with instant lifelong friends. Keep it going, brother! ✌🏻❤️😎
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile.
Thanks for spreading the gospel of the dead! 💀🌹⚡️
They do have some sad songs...that are at the same time very beautiful....They were masters at songs about all aspects of life....and death.
Grateful Dead songs that almost always make me cry...Stella Blue, China Doll, Days Between, So Many Roads, Broke Down Palace, Attics of My Life.
Great comment. Stella blue and brokedown palace can still bring tears. The dead were a highly intellectual group of people
Just love seeing that big smile on your face when you listen to the dead. It's contagious. 😁
So cool watching you discover all of the music that played such a big role in my life growing up.. Robert Hunter was such a great story teller and the dead were the perfect outlet for those stories/songs
These songs are some of the most trippy for me. The grooves and the classic Robert Hunter lyrics have such detailed and distinct mental images attached to them. This band is such a gift.
keep bringing the dead. .huge part of my life for over 50 yrs thank you great observation of the optimism and unity they inspire

@@bwyseymail Love the songs you linked...I also love Peter Rowan. Never saw them live, though one time I went to see Steve Goodman and David Grisman was in the audience so Steve had Grisman come up to do a song and they exchanged instruments: Grisman on guitar and Goodman on mandolin. It was a hilarious mash up
Yep. And don’t forget Bob Weir’s ‘ACE’ album. It’s full and rich in sound. “Playing In The Band”, “Cassidy”, etc.
Thank you bringing this music to more people is important to find that weightlessness that you speak of!
The greatest band ever! And the greatest album ever, Europe ‘72!
Me and my buds were at a concert in Cleveland and a spot went out. Bud Bill climed in the rafters and retrieved it and still has it 60 years later. ❤❤❤❤❤
Your post song analysis literllay brought me to tears, it is so gratifying to hear someone new to this music have such an honest and sincere take. What you have said in your somewhat initial take is so prescient, I am at a loss for words. Thank you. Please keep reviewing the Dead, watching you do it brings me a kind of joy I find no where else on youtube.
Make no mistake, yes the dead lift you higher, yet they had no issue showing you the deepest, darkest depths of hell, and yourself before bringing you back to the heavens. Love you and your reactions
Thanks so much for the positivity and love.
