  • How to paint old basement stone walls. Remove the mildew and mold.
    This video is six minutes well spent then. My name is Eric and I own a home built in 1926. I randomly do little fixer upper projects and like to record my experiences.
    This video shows how my basement looked before cleaning and painting it. Then it shows the results nearly a year later to see how everything held up over time.
    If you have questions beyond this video please post them below and I or someone else will try and answer them.

    On the yellow discoloration: the guy in this video did everything right BUT… omitted one step that would prevent most of this discoloration, as well as extend the life of the coating and prevent larger problems from developing: repointing the stone. (There is a great “this old house” video on this). For this video, after scrapping the pre existing coating and debris off, you would work the mortar grooves with a mason hammer between the stones and get out whatever breaks off. Then pack the wall with fresh mortar and bonding. This would greatly reinforce the wall and plug up the paths that allow water in. For the smaller cracks, the drylok would do the perfect trick, not to mention being an overall sealant to stop air infiltration. The only big con to this is that it would at least double the project time this guy listed as it is very teadious work, and would up the cost some. If you’re willing to get your hands dirty though this step will go a long way.

    I did the same thing in my basement in my last home. The basement was cinder block and was letting water to seep through. I already had a French drain but the basement was musty even with a dehumidifier. I also had a sump pump. I decided to use Dry Lok, and it took 2 coats and since the walls were block I was able to use a roller. I did this 13 years ago, my son lives there now and there has been no issues! Thanks for making this video. I am sure others will benefit

    after you clean the stone walls buy some hydraulic cement and make a slurry and apply with a large sponge let it dry then paint with the drylock.; this combo keeps humidity and moisture down considerably.

    Hi Eric. A friend bought a house in Detroit, 2000 square-foot basement, 1900 bult. It had a musty smell through the whole basement but it was in good condition very solidly built house. We rented a 5 gallon paint sprayer. They typically have a 20 or 30 foot long hose so you’re machine can be well behind you to move from room to room. 5 gallons of Bleach. Cut with 30% water, real strong solution. I put a bandana on + goggles. Each room had a door, they mimicked the rooms above, dining room, living room etc. I sprayed the walls, the rafters, the floor . The basement was empty . Soak the whole place quickly and shut the door . Then the next room, Quickly. Left the machine down there and left the house for a day or two. It dried beautifully and there was no mould or mustiness in that house. It was 100 years removed in a matter of one hour. Subsequently I bought a house built in 1880. I bought the 1 gallon spray pump bottle from the hardware store 80% bleach 20% water. Same trick, rafters,floors,walls, shut the doors and left the rooms. Very successful. I run a dehumidifier in the large rooms, three of them on timers when electricity is cheaper in the night. Only need to do this July to October. The foundation is river rock pebble stone. Same as u, plastered over like yours. It is flaking. But no smell and no mold. I have the dehumidifier set on a table 2 feet higher than the floor and the drain hose go into giant Rubbermaid Storage containers. I collect the water once a week and fill 25 gallons into my washing machine, a large old heavy duty unit upright. It’s dehumidified (distilled) water so it actually washes the clothes better. You just need a gallon pail to fill your w, machine. It’s a bit of work. It’s October now and I can only collect one gallon from three machines so the humidity is done till summer. Note. You need to have a fan also on the timer in the room with the dehumidifiers. Must circulate the air for it to be effective. If you’re lazy you can suspend the dehumidifier from the rafters and run a hose all the way to the laundry tubs drain or just set one up if you have a floor drain close to it, but you must use the fan.

    thanks for video. I have a similar basement, minus the black mold, and believe that I will try power washing the walls as I'm rehabbing the house and have 0 down there at present to worry about water or clean up... with better weather coming, I'll open the door and let it evaporate.
    after cleaning up the spalding wall / deteriorating concrete, Ill probably try the drylock routine or just rent a sprayer and spray an exterior grade paint on the walls. .. right now, I think it is age vs humidity that has worked against the walls. I also may just use polyicenurate (sp?) foam boards on the wall to cover them and give me some R value. Perhaps gluing and using a Blue Screw (for concrete) with a large washer(bottom of a tin can/soup can) to prevent the screw from going thru board.

    We have a dehumidifier in our basement! It works amazing. It's a 70 pint, so it takes care of 90% of the house (1200 ft. sq.). We went from 85% humidity to 50% and no more moldissues

  • @eblackbrook

    What is the wall made out of? You talked about cleaning off brittle pieces of the wall, but what is it that was flaking off? If this is the mortar between the stones of the wall, I kind of wonder if it needs repointing instead of just paining over. How is it looking 5 years later?

    just thinking, if you could plant something near your house like some small bushes or plants, their roots when fully grown will act as a sponge. I'm not talking about a single flower tho.

  • @jacobclark9957
    @jacobclark9957 9 лет назад +8

    Looks good, but those yellowish spots are just turning back into mold. It would have been better to leave the wall bare so the water can evaporate naturally. Drylok (or any paint) is organic, and will eventually just cause more mold if it actually contacts water consistently.

    well what i am at is one wall inner wall has some sort of plaster on it the paint came off easy but then been doing the stair case and its a real pain in the ass started to use a angle grinder with a wire brush but the paint dust is getting every where been doing it for about a week know about an hour a day. its the outer wall that concerns me as it will not be easy as their is a ton of electrics. seen some vids of guys using power wash but that would be dangerous for me just had to clean my upstairs as the white dust got every where through a small crack in the door as i could not close it. due to the power cable. did you paint over the top of the primer paint you used i will be using ,Zinsser Watertite Mould and Mildew Proof Waterproofing Paint 5L, did you paint another coat of emulation on top of it? my house is a back to back house built about 100 years ago so might be similar to yours I am seeing paint come off the boards above my head so that will need doing I guess. I believe my walls are no where near the state yours was its just a pain to get the white paint off the old plaster comes off easy its just the outer walls that worry me. Thank you for doing this video it has halped its not cheap all this stuff you have to get.

      ThatCanonGuy watched your video... I would first of all make sure you're wearing a respirator cause if you're closing the door you're probably making a dust storm. I also was afraid to use a powerwasher in my basement, especially since I was having mold and moisture issues.
      I would also check to see if you have any leaks where your washer machine hooks up. That might be why you have mold behind there. I would at least hit up that area with mold/mildew killer.
      It seems like you've done a ton of work up to this point. Why not just paint one of the more suspect areas. Let it dry and see if you like it? For my basement I just made sure I wasn't painting walls that were going to crumble in a month. I knocked off all the loose pieces and then painted and my walls stopped crumbling every since then. Looks like a lot of work but you're halfway there.

    You might want to diffuse the room with a microscopic diffuser and good blend of pure essential oil before starting for three days.
    Suggestion to investigate why mold specialist do not advocate bleach and whether it is effective as well as the impact of using synthetic chemicals. The mold spores can pick up the chemicals, what it grows on and other pathogens such as bacteria.
    Like the idea of the paint, there's also paint with silver additives.
    There are different types of mold. Slime mold is the worst in many basements in the NE and with all the storms people really need to be informed about their solutions and be proactive to avoid severe health issues.

    • @ProBuyersGuides
      @ProBuyersGuides  9 лет назад

      ThatCanonGuy I didn't get all of the original paint off but what I did is that I used that wire brush that you see at the 1:29 mark. I bought one that was connected to a broom handle. That way I could distance myself. I brushed off all the loose pieces, than sprayed it several times. The job has held up pretty nicely. A ton less water in my basement and the mildew mold has stayed away so far.

    Nature stone needs to breathe. You made a mistake. Never use drylok on a nature stone wall. You should have used limewash which allows the stone to breathe. You need a dehumidifier and grade your yard so the water moves away from the house.
