Na Pua Lei `Ilima - Led and Fran at the Lake

- The `ilima flower is a tiny delicate one, hard to find and precious. It is the flower of O`ahu so songs about the `ilima are likely to celebrate the island and its children. As it happens there are two songs of the same name and both do celebrate and honor O`ahu. The older song was composed by John K. Almeida, one of Hawai`is most prolific composers. You can find the lyrics and a translation here: www.huapala.org... and it is certainly a song of love, but the lover could easily be a metaphor for the island.
The version we generally hear today has a totally different melody and this is the one that inspired Led and I for our improvised duet. The lyrics of this version were composed by Abbey Palea with music by Emily Kau'i Zuttermeister. You can find the lyrics and translation of this song here: www.kalena.com... and you can see that this one is more directly a tribute to the island of O`ahu and its children.
One of the features of windward O`ahu is the drama in the sky, the magnificent clouds that decorate the sky and frame the mountains. It can be challenging to capture that sky while also featuring the musicians but things came together pretty well for this shoot. As always its better to be lucky than good (grin).
Led and I are both playing Martin guitars, his is the old faithful long scale 000-16 that he bought years ago at Gryphon Strings in Palo Alto, CA. I'm using my Hawai`i OM-18V, a somewhat abused example that I bought from a pawn shop via Ebay. It can sometimes be a struggle but that wonderful Martin and mahogany sound is worth the effort. I miked up the two guitars with my pair of Shure KSM142 mics, set to their omnidirectional pattern. The mics were plugged into the Zoom F6 while I shot video using my Panasonic Lumix GH5. I used REAPER to mix down the audio tracks and then pulled the clip together using DaVinci Resolve.
I grew up on Akumu St… down da road… we were the last house on Akumu when we moved in… 1962. So sweet da music…
We feel lucky beyond words to be able to spend some time in this neighborhood.

You guys just delight the ears, mind, and soul! Thank you!
How very nice of you, thanks. The whole thing is for our fun, but it's very satisfying to be sharing the fun with others and also to be capturing some of Led's magic for future fans.
Fran
As always, sooo good to see and hear you guys playing together!
Thank you, it's a double pleasure to play with Ledward and to have such a gorgeous location.
Fran
What a delightful performance, hearing you two laugh at the end was the cherry on top!
Sometimes the laugh at the end is because we managed to end together. Sometimes it's because we _didn't_ end together (grin). And often it's because Ledward has found some new treat on his guitar and enjoyed sharing it.

I'm having such a good time when Led and I play together, but it's almost better to hear from all the folks who enjoy these clips. So glad you liked it.

Delightful! What a Sunday treat. You two really have such joy in your playing. Outstanding!
Aloha Linda, yes it's all about the fun first of all, and being able to share it just makes it better.
Fran
Beautiful. Puts me in mind of the tropics. Wonderful interplay between the two of you as always.
That sweet sound of the tropics, yes it's definitely in there. Led can bounce all around the guitar but still make it relaxing and comfortable
Fran
Hi Fran - another wonderful performance. You and Led just blend together so well - a real treat. Great scenery too. Thanks for sharing this beamusic 👏🏻👍
Ever since I started playing with Led I've tried to find a way to complement and support his playing. I'm glad it's working for you, I feel honored to have the opportunity.

Flat beautiful! Oh how the beauty of the island history shines through your gifts! Once more, ALOHA from Oregon! 🏄🏻♂️😁🤗❤️🇺🇸
In all my slack key playing and recording I'm hoping to bring more people to this lovely style and this rich culture. Ledward is also creating a record of the sounds he heard growing up in Kalapana. I think his playing could only have developed as it did in a total family immersion.

Soothing, thanks for capturing and sharing all of these slices of serenity.
Thank you, I think slack key is one of the few musical styles that aim for that feeling of calm and comfort - nahenahe it is called.
