    I got Annie Bot, Murder Road, the Other Valley, and None of This is True for my BOTY. I am interested in Annie Bot because I love The Twilight Zone television series and it is giving me those vibes!

    Fun video with lots of good info. I went with Listen for the Lie. Of the BOTY finalists I ordered Weyward to give to my daughter. I’ve read it and enjoyed and she thought it sounded interesting. I’ve either read or wasn’t interested in the others. I’ll probably read Kill for Me, Kill for You at some point. I was torn between the two thrillers. Enjoy your box! I have Aardvark too and have to say it’s a lot less anxiety provoking because they release on the same day at the same time consistently- always the 1st, 8 am eastern no matter weekend, holiday, whatever. They bill the day before. I wish BOTM would do the same.

    • @twentyonereaders
      @twentyonereaders  7 месяцев назад

      The predictable Aardvark release date and time really intrigues me to join! The only thing is I don't want to overcommit by having more books to read each month. Although it could be fun to add another book box. That's nice you're going to gift Weyward to your daughter and I can relate to not being that interested in the other BOTY finalists. Enjoy Listen for the Lie!

      @@twentyonereaders I haven’t tried this myself but it’s a strategy which would involve some level of self control (not my strong suit when it comes to books). You could have both subscriptions and flip back and forth by month, buying from one and skipping the other. With Aardvark, you can skip a month and that month’s credit would remain. You can keep skipping without being charged indefinitely. I’m not sure if it’s the same for BOTM when skipping. I have the year of credits so they just stay in my account until the renewal date.

    I bought 6. Disappointed with The Women and Annie Bot. Maybe I was too excited and expectations were too high. No onto The Wishing Game, The many Lives of Mama Love, Tomorrow...., Kill for me Kill for You and Here After....hoping for a good one.

    A Fate Inked in Blood is interesting because it's a highly anticipated title due to the author's preexisting popularity (maybe this influenced BOTM's decision to include it this month), but I've seen a lot of reviews from people, a lot of fans of hers especially, that were disappointed by it. But maybe as I don't have those expectations I will do better with it. It's what I would've typically gone for, as I'm always excited about and wanting to support fantasy or speculative titles in BOTM (though I hope we don't start getting only Romantasy now), but between the mixed reviews and the reading sample (which didn't inspire my confidence), I'm really unsure. I really liked the writing style in the Annie Bot sample, but the subject matter is very uncomfortable, and I'm worried it might make me too angry to just enjoy the book, lol.
    I don't even know what to pick for my BOTY finalists because Weyward, the obvious choice for my tastes, was a pick for me last year (I haven't read it because I was focusing on older BOTM backlog last year, but I'm still excited to get to it). Lol, I think it's going to take me a while to figure out what to get in this month's box 🤦‍♀

    • @twentyonereaders
      @twentyonereaders  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the fantasy picks! Since I don't read much fantasy it's fun to hear what fantasy readers think about BOTM's fantasy picks and the romantasy of it all. That makes sense A Fate Inked in Blood is highly anticipated based on how many ratings The Bridge Kingdom has. Didn't read the Annie Bot sample I wonder if I'll feel the same way about it. What did you end up picking for your BOTY?

    • @priscilla.t.a
      @priscilla.t.a 7 месяцев назад

      Thanks for taking the time to read my long responses! lol. So I got a longer sample for A Fate Inked in Blood through Kindle, and I disliked the writing so much, I didn't even finish it, lol. Some of the language is jarringly anachronistic. I'm not usually too picky about that sort of thing, especially with a book that is fantasy rather than historical fantasy, but I thought that A Fate Inked in Blood, within the writing itself, was going for a fantastical yet grounded, medieval, Nordic setting, and I loved that part of it, but having the MC complain about her awful "narcissist" husband was super weird and jarring, lol. For a second, it read just like a contemporary novel, before the scene returned to the MC gutting fish from in her medieval peasant hut, lol. There were other similar moments in the language that basically ruined the bit of the book I was actually liking. The rest of it was just not for me, so I didn't get it in the end.
      I ended up going with Listen for the Lie for the main pick. I like thrillers but don't read them a ton, so I'm happy to just take a chance on one. I picked this one over the other one because I liked the writing better, and I'm excited to dive into it. I also got Ink Blood Sister Scribe as an add-on since I missed it last year, and it's on Locus Magazine's recommended reading list for 2023 releases. I also got Murder Road through another book box, though that will be here after my BOTM box, so it'll be a while before I get to it.
      For my BOTY freebie, I went back and forth a lot on The Wishing Game because the reviews were mixed and because of an element that I worried would ruin the book for me personally. I'm curious to see how you get on with it. Shark Heart sounds too sad for my taste, tbh. In the end I went with Truly Yours. I did already have Part of Your World on my TBR, and the reviews for that have been really fantastic. Like with thrillers, I enjoy romance but don't read a lot of it, so I'm always happy to try something that my go-to reviewers are liking.

    Thanks for your video! After some research, I'm going to pick Here After by Amy Lin. I really enjoyed When Breath Becomes Air and gave it 4 stars. This sad book will probably be something I enjoy too. Annie Bot is interesting but even listening to the first 5 minutes of the audiobook, I don't want to read about how a guy uses his robot woman for his needs. Exploring the topic of robotics and AI is interesting, I just don't know what Annie Bot has to say and with it being a debut, even though BOTM doesn't label it that, I decided not to pick it. I'd rather read None of This is True before Listen for the Lie because the premise of the first is more engaging and both of those are similar styles of book. Kill for Me, Kill for You is a no as I've read The Last Word and just didn't care for the chase between the characters. I'm more about the whodunit and why than the actual murder/kill. The Silent Patient worked for me whereas The Last Word didn't.
    Happy reading! Looking forward to your thoughts later on all these and your thoughts on The Wishing Game. I've heard good things about The Wishing Game and have that on my TBR to get down the road. It's a happy, feel good book. Add-ons for this month that I'm including are: The Goldfinch, Divine Rivals, Wellness, and Adelaide.

      Hoping you enjoy Here After and I will consider it when I want a sad book. I haven't read When Breath Becomes Air but have heard great things. I think I will eventually read Annie Bot but good point that we will probably eventually get other books about AI in the future. I will be eager to compare Listen for the Lie with None of This is True. And I still want to read Adelaide at some point!

      Didn't realize they always emailed on the first. Makes sense then why it seems like sometimes they email on release day.
