Well your are kind of wrong tanjiro is still not hashira lvl but he is pretty close.he can go toe toe with the weaker hashira like Shinobu, mitsuri,tengen but he will still lose.
You will find out later that sanemi,obanai,giyomei,giyu are on a different League of power but tanjiro will surpass them by the end of the show
Tanjiro by the end of the show was said to be at a mod range level of a hashira, not stronger than sanemi or gyomei.
For me it was kinda ridiculous that they were whining about the training.
I mean, a real demon won't stop just because you are crying or screaming in pain.

I say sanemi is second but serpent and water can prolly go neck and neck giyu is really like that
