  • There was a time when I couldn't stop talking about the bosses I hated the most in this series, but I soon wanted to balance things out with more positivity. Well, now that it's been so long, how about we return to being misery guts again?
When upping the difficulty of a game, it's important to not go too far; be careful not to make certain enemies inflict too much damage, give them too much health, that sort of thing. If only someone told that to the creators of Streets of Rage 3...

I heard the reason lot of Japanese games for the NES and SNES became harder in the west is due to the rental system. You couldn't rent games in Japan like in western countries, so some of the games became harder in order to prevent consumers from beating it in a single weekend.

I thought it was because the Japanese games were ported to the west later on more advanced systems, so while the games played slower on Japanese systems, they were sped up on western systems. There was also that translation issue where the hints Japanese players had to find powerful items and defeat bosses in games were mistranslated. Also, the process of porting games could often make glitches appear and have unintended side effects that weren't tested or fixed that would increase the difficulty of the games. Even eviler is that the western gamers would complain about how the Japanese games were too hard, the Japanese would laugh because to the the games were easy and they actually made the games more difficult because of their pride and desire for a 'challenge'. So, games that were intended to be difficult to satisfy the Japanese became nightmarish when ported to western systems a year or even a few months later.

Damn, I actually liked "Crazy Train" (Jet's SOR3 Boss Theme), but I get your point. At least his design looks way better.
When I was 10, I couldn't beat this boss with the 9 lives cheat AND 3 continues.
8:20 Zan can chain his down-air attack on Jet, but you need precise timing.
Fun Fact: Using Level Select, it's actually possible to fight Jet on Easy difficulty. And even on SOR3's lowest difficutly he already has 3 lifebars!

I personally think ideal balanced settings would be:
    Very Hard:
Boss - same health as SOR3's hard. But Bald Jet's healthbar should be 6 not 7. (Because in BK3, he has less health compared to Robot X). Yamato's healthbar should be 3 and half not 4. And first round Shiva's healthbar should be the same as BK3's since BK3's one has little higher healthbar.
Non boss - same number as SOR3's hard, and same health as BK3's very hard. (Because SOR3 has more numbers and BK3 has more health)
    Hard:
Boss - same health as SOR3's normal boss. But Bald Jet's healthbar should be 60% of one life lower than Robot X. Also Yamato's healthbar should be 2 and half.
Non boss - same number as SOR3's normal and same health as BK3's hard
    Normal:
Boss - same health as BK3's very hard. Shiva's healthbar should be BK3's normal.
Non boss - same number as SOR3's easy and same health as BK3's normal
    Easy
Boss - same health as BK3's easy. (Because in BK3, difference between boss health for hard and very hard is very small. Same for hard and normal, normal and easy_
    Non boss - BK3's easy
And penalizes you for choosing easy and game ends in 5th stage.

A lot of Japanese games released in the west were made to be more difficult because of the western branches of the publishing companies having a huge hate-on for the rental market until about 94-95. Since unlike Japan, it was not seen as illegal to rent video games in most parts of the world, they bolstered up the difficulty as one of the ways to combat American rental store franchises like Blockbuster, Movie Gallery, and Hollywood Video. I don't know what the rental market in the UK and EU were like back then, or even if there were similar concerns, but it was usually the American branches of companies like Sega, Nintendo, Capcom, Konami and others that usually dictated how the game was going to end up in both the Americas and Europe.
Those US-indented difficulty spikes would end up being standard for many PAL releases unless the European branches of the same companies were talking to the Japanese heads specifically as well. So unless Sega was receiving complaints from gamers and critics in Japan that BK3 was too easy, my guess was that they jumped into that same bandwagon for a few releases to make SoR3 as difficult as possible in an attempt to curb rental sales of it.

Baldy Jet's level is also a pain in the arse. You have to find and disarm 2 bombs hidden on certain rooms and save the general/chief of police, fighting against some of the most annoying minor enemies in the game (jumping robots with ranged attacks and blockers) and a frickin' TIME LIMIT (2 time limits if you count the always present one). If you fail, you take constant damage until you find the exit, not to mention, no good ending for you. And then, after you complete those objetives, you have to fight this guy. Of course Adam shows up right in the end, just to spray some bullets and deal with the already finished enemies. Thanks dude, we're glad we saved you last game! jk Adam is the best.
Seriously, this level is stress incarnate from the beggining to the end.

I used to play these games way more than anyone should admit. I'd search for various secrets and removed features to hack in. Was pretty successful in doing so, actually. Needless to say, I played it enough to remember some useless trivia.
I thought I remembered it being possible to fight Jet one on one, so I went back and double checked. The Rockets will stop spawning if you defeat 10 of them. Now, whether it's worth the effort to do that...uhh, probably not unless you desperately need points to improve your rush attack.

Ah yes, the real final boss of SOR3. I've played a lot of beat-em-ups and Jet has to be the hardest boss in any of them. He also has a arsenal of moves unlike SOR2 Jet, including rising up to do a charge, then quickly dropping down and doing a flamethrower to catch you off guard. Deploying flying mines, double charges, that rolling move that does half your health on Hard, Jet is a real piece of work.
I don't like using infinites so I found the best thing is to take advantage of the massively reduced health penalty in SOR3 for using a special without a full bar. Spam special moves because for all characters except Blaze you're fully invincible when using one.

Yeah, 7 Health Bars is ridiculous.
But you want to know what's even more ridiculous? FIFTY HEALTH BARS!
Trust me, you are NOT going to like Yiazmat from Final Fantasy 12 if even 7 health bars is too much for you.

The reason SOR3 is so much harder in the west is simple.
    MONEY.
In the arcades, it was designed to leech money off of microtransactions and/or killing players a lot. Yes, you could buy weapons and items in the arcade version by putting another quarter in the slot while at a shop. It also made it a lot harder to beat while renting it, encouraging players to buy the game just to beat it.
    So basically modern EA.
