2016 Hyundai i30 Active review | CarAdvice

  • We are the Korean carmakers biggest market in the world for this particular model, and it’s a chart topper in the passenger car sales race.
    It seems us Aussies can’t get enough of the Hyundai i30. Maybe because the deals have been so good; in fact the drive away price for the entry level Active has been as low as $19,990 with free automatic transmission.
    The i30 Active gets 16-inch steel wheels, body coloured bumpers, halogen headlights and fog lamps.
    It’s got quite a big boot for a car this size - 378 litres with a full size spare under the floor. Jumping into the backseat, even with that generous boot there’s still quite an impressive amount of room.
    There’s more than adequate headroom and loads of knee room, though the shape of the outboard seats leaves a bit to be desired. There’re no cup holders, no armrest or rear air vents and no USB or 12V either.
    The cabin is neat and tidy in its layout, and storage is quite well accounted for up the front. It also scores a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto recently added as standard.
    A rear-view camera is also standard, as is rear park assist and cruise control. Not bad for an entry model.
    The Active and Active X are available with a 1.8-litre four cylinder engine and the SR and SR Premium have a 2.0-litre four cylinder engine - all available with either a six-sped automatic or six-speed manual transmission.
    A 1.6-litre four cylinder diesel engine is available in Active, Active X and Premium variants.
    The 1.8-litre engine produces 107kW and 175Nm so it should have a bit of get up and go - and out on the road the auto transmission is quite smooth when you’re cruising around at city speeds.
    At higher speeds road noise becomes a bit more intrusive while the suspension is nice and supple - compliant even over some of the dodgier Sydney roads.
    The i30 comes with Hyundai’s five-year unlimited kilometre warranty, lifetime capped price servicing plan and roadside assist.
    No wonder these are selling faster than tickets to an ACDC concert - there’s nothing missing here. It’s spacious for a small car, above average warranty, a touchscreen, reversing camera, cruise control - and it’s a base model! Why wouldn’t you buy it.

      Yes. They took away those lovely sweeping lines on the sides. The new model has a boring look.

    Bought the Active X variant for my wife, it's a great little car. That feels bigger than my old 2005 Ford XR6. The only gripe I have about the car like most cars in that class is that you can't see the bonnet at all sitting in the driver seat. So you really have to learn to "feel" how much room you've got on the front when parking.
    Also we're getting around 10 to 9.5 litres per 100 with city driving (Going to work and back 30-60 km/h) with ECO on. Haven't tried it with it off. Oh it's a 50 litre tank that uses 91 Unleaded.

    I have the 2016 Elantra GT ( Left Hand Drive 🇨🇦) It's the Base GL Auto , but it doesn't have a backup camera or the fog lights but does have the rear centre armrest with 2 cup holders . Mine manages 6.7 to 8 per 100kms and up to 5.4 on the highway . It's a great car so far .

      yeah this shithouse review barely addresses anything.
      she says there's road noise, but all cars have that. says it drives well but that's not specific enough. she knows fuck all about cars.

      probably on 50km :D
      Seriously, I've never seen anywhere near that consumption on any i30 so far... It's usually up to 1l difference than claimed liters per 100km.

    • @gnarsmoot
      @gnarsmoot 7 лет назад +1

      I usually sit between 7.5-8.5 with a mix of town driving, stop-start traffic and short highway driving. I suggest always having Eco on, it does make a substantial difference in both fuel economy and the way it drives.

    • @defectiveclone8450

      i never use eco because it feels like the car is slow to change gears and revs more.. no idea why!.. my trip computer is sitting on 7.4L/100k and ive done 26,000km .. only reset the trip at my first 1000km :)

    Nicely done review, the only car advice reviews in general should add would be torque figures and when those figures peak in the rev range.
    Watching this review I couldn't help but draw comparisons (here in the New Zealand market anyway) with the VW golf all the way through the range disregarding the GTi and R versions of the Golf. I can't speak for interior roominess but the the Golf matches or out points the i30 in most respects accept peak hp but on the flip side the Golfs make a handy amount more torque. The pricing is also line ball to, I'm sorry I know Hyundai's are good cars well made but I would swap the Golf in a month of Sunday's, call me a brand snob if you like I done mind but Hyundai's are certainly no long the value leaders they once were.

    I had a look at one but didn't like it, got the octavia wagon with sports pack in wagon form for the same price that the hyundai dealer wanted for a base model i30, and the octavia is miles ahead in refinement and build quality.

    "...absolutely nothing missing here..." Maybe some rear passenger comfort? An arm rest or cup holder in the back wouldn't go astray. A lot of base models don't supply rear air vents/climate control but to be missing something as simple as a cup holder... in 2016 model...

  • @alexmetric4017
    @alexmetric4017 8 лет назад +1

    Those 14.4L don't say anything, the reviewers always have to provide an average speed for their achieved consumption... The consumption in the CBD with average speed at 17-20 km/h will be almost doubled in comparison with suburban driving with average speed at 35-40km/h

      Yes she is, yes they are and in comparison to what? Just asking..
      I think the Hyundai is a decent car but lacks in certain areas in comparison to some of its competitors, rear seat accomodation is lacking in some niceties and fuel consumption is quite poor

    Why bother reviewing this model, when everyone else already did it. Next year (2017) comes the new i30, which would be worth reviewing and comparing to others.

      +Ivan Doe - the current i30 is the top selling car in Australia. Don't worry, we'll cover the new one when it arrives - but for now, this one is still very very relevant.
