"No Quarter",, My absolute all time favorite Led Zeppelin song...Deeply steeped in dark mythology..Beautiful & Haunting at the same time. ❤
Right on brother!!! Very atmospheric to say the least.👍👍👍
The studio version of "No Quarter" is great. The LIVE version of "No Quarter" on "The Song Remains the Same" is simply sublime, epic and enthralling.
Jimmy's solo is Kick Ass .. Page says that He "Chringes" when He listens to The Song Remains The Same live album . Don't know why .. It's Fucking Killer !!
“No Quarter” is a masterpiece. “Nasty guitar” indeed. Indeed. There is something to choosing the path no-one goes. And indeed, build a dream (better life) for everyone.
this album is 50 years old. quintessentially ahead of its time.
They ALL were just as good as each other,There are no words how great these guys were!!!
There is a story about Robert Plant being in the hospital in (I think) Morocco. When the man in the next bed learned who he was, that man just starts singing "The Ocean" to Plant.
Dancing Days is amusing because Plant takes a girl out to a Party and promises her mother to get her home at a decent hour but he doesn’t own a car. So that’s the inside joke. Dyer Maker is quasi Reggae. Led Zeps take on the Reggae rhythm.
No Quarter has one of the best riffs ever by Page. Then the album wraps up with one of Pages Tour De Forces. The incredible riffs of The Ocean! So they album ends on a high note! This is the kind of RnR satisfaction only Zep could deliver! Enjoy! Plant even says so at the end. Ah, it’s soo good! This album is a 10 out of 10!
Zeppelin loved Dancing Days so much at one point they played it twice at the same concert.
I have "experienced" Zeppelin live three times and have blasted them on my audio system for years. Seeing this young woman enjoying Jimmy and the band for the first time brings back happy memories. Love the commentary and air guitar.
You saw Zeppelin 3 times ?? You're Blessed ..
Young Lady, i've watched you review a lot of Albums, a lot of bands, but you definitely are most at home, with Zeppelin, you just seem to enjoy them most, you really do get Zeppelin. Born too late, i'm so sorry that you didn't get to experience them fresh, but so glad you have all the Albums and vid to enjoy!
Uhhh....you mean I'm not the only old fud that watches reaction channels!!!!!!
Love the reaction. That is such a solid album. As a musician, I really appreciate how observant you are to what's happening musically within the song. You're always so perceptive and described it well.
The Rain Song was probably the nicest ballad Zeppelin, or any band ever recorded!
The live fantasy version of it in the concert movie “The Song Remains The Same” was unbelievable!
“It’s kind of scary.”
That’s probably why us Zeppelin fans love “No Quarter” so much. The dread seeping into the music is just…fantastic.
Thanks for the reaction. Long Live Led Zeppelin. 🤘🏽
I should probably elaborate…us Zeppelin fans who lean into the heavier side of music. This album is incredible and has so much variety, but us fans that are into heavy music gravitate towards “No Quarter.” Much like another song from the next album (which I think she’ll recognize when she hears it). It’s all great.
well stated my friend. I had the benefit of seeing No Quarter performed live, and consider it one of the best songs they ever wrote.
yeah plus it makes my panties soaked
Yes it's the dread juxtaposed to the hope. Wearing steel that's bright and true. Carrying news that must get thru. The tension makes it very compelling
Best song on the album, certainly the most original. No doubt influenced by PF pre DSOTM musically.
I just love the 'doo wop' vibe that The Ocean wraps up with ....so cool
Hi Verdy,👋
This side of the album is my favorite, I love every song. Page creating riff after riff, Jones as always superb and also letting his talent fly in No Quarter, Plant in his best vocal moment and finally who gives all the power to the Zeppelin sound, the great "Bonzo" Bonham...an earthquake in the drums.
You are right, D'yer Mak'er is a reggae with all the power of Bonzo, the true protagonist of the song.
Don't make us wait to hear Physical Graffiti, it's a masterpiece. 😎
Thanks for the reaction.
I love that music like the Mighty Zep can make you smile. 😁✌️
Love this album top to bottom. A perfect example of Led's greatness and absolute dominance of the music world. No Quarter is by far my favorite.
One of glthe greatest albums of all time.
Great reaction! My 2nd favourite Led Zeppelin album, after "Physical Graffiti".
👍🇬🇧❤MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ZEP LP 🎸 BEST BAND EVER !!!!!!
Nasty , Nasty , Nasty "Gietar" . You're Fun Verdy . Keep doin' what You're doin ' !! Thanks ..
This album is a sonic masterpiece. This would be the album you let someone borrow if you wanted to introduce them to Zep. It's the poppiest and thus the easiest to digest. OtHaFA is a top 5 song of their's.
this one should be in the Smithsonian museum as an example of the most timeless music humans ever created
Magic ✨
Zep just having fun, playing anything they felt like, after their magnificent 4th album. As diverse and experimental as their 3rd album, within new genres.
This album has a bright sound and feel. Only exception is No Quarter. Its cooling and moody
The best Led Zep party/dance album
💗 Your Reactions Rachel - Especially To D'Yer Maker (Jamaica) and The Ocean! Keep It Up ✌️🌞
What a treat is too see reaction of someone who understands music. Makes my day, thank you.
This was Zeppelin branching into their whimsical creative direction. After the titanic success of their fourth LP, how they reached new highs here is stunning!
Stepped away from the traditional blues based rock that inspired them and getting more into contemporary grooves. The Crunge and Dancing Days are great examples of a funk or pop music influence and D'yer Mak'er is obviously Carribean/reggae inspired.
“THAT dirty sound” of the guitar that you referred to as @wah wah” is LITERALLY a wah wah peddle effect on the guitar.
This is JPJ’s song…. Keyboard effects and arrangement and he uses bass pedals for the bass line
Oh my goodness this is my favorite Zeppelin Record ever next to Physical Graffitti
Bought the album, smoked my first joint listening with friends, never looked bak❤
Love it or hate it, you have to admit it was one of the most unique albums ever. To my knowledge every song sounded like nothing before. I hated it when it came out, but soon learned to love it.
I think this was The first album that Led Zeppelin hás produceded by themselves (John Paul Jones was the leading producer, the Bass and keybord player, whom was best Studio bass player of his generation, and played with Page in The latest formation of The Yardbords)
You are creating quite a catalog, in your memories to last a lifetime worth of happiness. Soooo Good!!
VERDY Channel = Happy Led Zeppelin listener
Houses of the Holy (both sides) has always been my favorite Zepp album. It brings back so many memories of my teenage years when it was first released! Glad to see young people still enjoying it. Thanks for doing this!
Side 2 is my favorite but the whole album is great. Have a great week!
Thank you, Verdy...allowing me to relive my teen years...😌
You have a lot of beautiful pure emotion in your heart. You're a joy to watch. This is one of the all-time great rock albums, and I think No Quarter is the masterpiece on it.
No Quarter is a masterpiece and i've never heard anyone say that it's scary but here we are! hope you liked it
You said it Chris! My favorite song featuring John Paul Jones! Shows how very talented this man is! As Jack Black said of him during the Kennedy Honors: JONESY COULD PLAY ANYTHING! I agree: Keyboards 🎹 Organ/Piano, Bass, Mandolin, Recorders on Stairway to Heaven etc! The list goes on and on!
The music definitely has a chilling vibe to it, that's what makes it so great, the emotion that Zeppelin puts in their music, and that's also what puts them above all other bands. The only other band in the 70's that comes close is Pink Floyd, they also have strong emotion in their music
It is with a heavy heart that I admit, the song out-Traffics Traffic. I'm sure Steve Winwood tipped his hat to John Paul Jones.
Love this album. How could they follow the first four with another stunning work? 'No Quarter' shows how Zep. can use the new music to create a mind blowing trip to a 'middle earth' adventure.
Early High school days, Singing these songs & being a HS. DJ, was so much fun. Zeppelin never disappointed, Thanks Verdy ❤Good review 🎉
I'd forgotten what an absolute stunning album this is. I don't think I've heard it since the golden age of the compact cassette, pre-CD. Thanks for reminding me.
forgotten? How does anyone forget a Zeppelin Album?!?
Dang Frank, too long away brother! Hopefully you've given it a spin or two since
Right before they would play No Quarter, smoke rolled low across the stage to add to the eerie feeling. Greatest band ever. We got to see them twice.
On No Quarter, Jimmy played straight into the mixing board and Robert supposedly sang through a guitar amp. The distortion comes right from his effect pedals.
No Quarter. Perfection.
I love it when you space out 15:55
I'm usually not a fan of covers, but Tool does an awesome cover of No Quarter.. should check it out..
I love watching your reactions to these classic albums! I pronounced it "Dyer Maker" when this album came out as well. It was not until years later that someone corrected me to "Didja make her" which is phonetic pronunciation of a joke set-up line.
“I’ve just taken my wife on holiday to the Caribbean.”
“Jamaica?”
“No, she was happy to come.”
This album was a bit of a change when it was released ... as I recall. It eventually became a classic, or another classic by LZ. Seeing much of this performed live convinced me of its greatness.
Guitar distortion is actually a fuzz. I think page used the electro harmonix fuzz face. And that wah wah sound is a tremolo effect on the keyboard
No quarter one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, and tool thought so as well
When you can listen to NO Quarter live at MSG 1973. What a performance.
first cd i ever bought, first LZ album of all original material
Thanks for sharing my fave Zep album.
Brilliant album Verdy, glad you enjoyed it. But the best is yet to come. Physical Graffiti is Zeppelin at their very best. I'm jealous that you haven't heard it yet.
I really can't wait to see you get to Physical Graffiti Verdy. It's like, a bit, the end of journey for a band. Really think it will blow you away.
The GOAT!
Personally, D'yer Mak'er is the greatest love song ever written. What the lyrics don't say the music fills you in and vice versa. Just my humble opinion.
No Quarter alone makes this an essential album, turned out most of it made it on the radio even after many being mildly disappointed in the album after the all time classic volume 4. Time has been kind to this album and turned out to be another Led Zeppelin classic. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Oh golly….is this your first time hearing No Quarter???? Can’t believe it! You’ve heard so much Zeppelin, and usually this is in the first 10 or so that reactors do. Cool. It’s one of my favorites from Their catalogue.
You like Tool, right? They do an amazing cover of this. Very respectful but they add their own heavy twist.
The Beastie Boys built "She's Crafty" around that opening riff from "The Ocean." Fun song.
I highly recommend reacting to Zeppelin's double live album titled The Song Remains the Same. ...... Highly recommend !
Incredible album definitely one of my favorites! Enjoy!
Jonesy is unique in so far as...he plays the base and keyboard at the same time keeping lockstep with jimmy
It may have been unique to rock music but he borrowed his technique from jazz masters of the Hammond B3 organ like Jimmy Smith who played the melody line on the keys and the bass line on the foot pedal.
No Quarter gives me goosebumps. A shock of dopamine!
Rock on, Verdy !
"Sipping booze is president". "As the evening starts to grow".
The easiest way to pronounce D'yer Maker is Jer Make Her. A bad joke about Did you make her and Jamaica sounding alike. No Quarter Jimmy is using a Fuzz pedal and the entire track was lowered a 1/2 step to add to the gloom. The Piano solo is fantastic. Robert sums up The Ocean at the end when he say's So Good. It was. A great album and a great reaction.
There's a band called Tool that is spectacular and they do a cover of No Quarter that is worth checking out. Also, their albums Aenema, Lateralus, or 10,000 Days are very special.
The subject matter is scary. Lots of reference to The Lord Of The Rings “They take the path where no one goes”. If you’re familiar with the story, then you get the Aragorn reference
The ocean is killer!
Hey Ms Verdy, enjoyed watching you reacting to this album! Much ❤ to you from the States!
Rachel, I know how much you like Led Zeppelin, you should really listen to the album that came right after Houses of the Holy. It’s the Physical Graffiti album!! You will LOVE IT.!!
The distortion on the guitar is called a fuzz.
D'Yer Ma'Ker: That's pronounced pretty much the same way you say the word, Jamaica but, it's taken from the way Brits would pronounce it. It comes from a joke they'd tell: A guy is talking with one of his friends and says he's going to be going on holiday with his wife. The friend asks, "Jamaica?" But it sounds like he said, "Did you make her?" As in, "Did you force her to go with you?" because, in England, they have a tendency to combine the words "did" and "you" and pronounce the "you" part as, "yer" so, combining both words comes out, "D'yer". So, the first guy, thinking the second guy said, "Did you make her?" says, "No, she's going of her own free will."
As the song is reggae and reggae comes from Jamaica, that's why they called it that.
No Quarter: That "wah-wah" sound is an electric piano with either a vibrato on it or some kind of wah pedal that makes the wah sound automatically without you having to do it manually.
The cool thing about these videos is that it reminds me of when I first started seeing my future ex-fiance and she, being from India, knew very little about American music but loved what she knew about, and then there's me, with at least 36,000 records at that point (now, over 62,000) showing her all this great stuff she'd never heard OF before and having very similar reactions to her first listens as you're doing here.
the '77 tour versions of NO QUARTER are arguably the best LIVE tune(s) that Led Zep ever recorded/played LIVE... Yes, I'd compare NQ LIVE (especially '77) to any Stairway/In my time of Dying/Kashmir/SIBLY, etc., LIVE, ever.
P.S. There's a lot of treatments to NQ, but what you're wondering about is mainly keyboards and guitars running thru a a "LESLIE" rotating Speaker/amp.... I think.
Great review Verdi! The song “No Quarter “ has a haunting sound to tell the story Led Zeppelin wants to tell. It’s almost like a small movie the way they set up the atmosphere. It just goes to show how versatile Led Zeppelin was.
Wait until you react to the album Phisical Graffiti. It's Led Zeppelin at their peak!!
On reflection, this is probably my favorite albums of theirs. It was a departure in that they started to experiment with more creative and complicated compositions and pushed some boundaries. I remember when it came out that it received mixed critical reviews but became a big commercial success. For me, loved it immediately with my favorite song being The Rain Song. It's simply beautiful.
That nasty sound was commonly referred to as a "fuzz bass"... That hard driving bass in juxtaposition to that beautiful piano is what makes this song so great...
I think Verdy is referring to the “nasty” distorted guitar on No Quarter, not so much the bass guitar. I don’t know what effect or combination of effects one would use to achieve it, but I’ve always thought of the sound as “heavy on the mustard”.
it's called a Fuzz Box that gives the guitar that nasty sound. @@MarcosElMalo2
I truthfully wasn't sure what instrument she was talking about, fuzz bass was my guess... either way, great song...
Not my favorite album but No Quarter is high up on the HELL YEAH scale! What a vibe they created
This has always been one of my favorite Zep albums, the creativity and variety of the songs are second to none. Classic rockers to acoustic, funk, reggae, the atmospheric. No one does it like Zep.
The most unique and happy feeling album in the whole discography in my opinion. No Quarter's studio version is great but the MSG live version is absolutely stellar. One of the best rock live performances ever
Loved your smile and expressions during the lalalala part of the Ocean!
Great reaction. I hope it doesn't take long for you to hear Physical Graffiti.
Ahhhh NO Quarter! The Ocean live 1973 at msg....watch them pull off that change FLAWLESSLY!!
Old Grey Whistle Test did one of their FilmFinders videos for a section of No Quarter in 1973 & that really would creep you out.
There's a lot of jazz in "No Quarter" and I hope that song turns you on to that music. The way you listen is incredible. Going back to side one, "The Crunge" is directly infuenced by James Brown. Check him out, too. And keep this all up!
Hello, I’m happy you are enjoying Led Zepplin, my favorite band. Houses of the Holy is my favorite album. You can see how their music is evolving on this particular album. In the studio, Jimmy plays other guitar tracks on top of their songs because he’s the only guitarist. JPJ assists with bass, keyboards and mandolin. Also, Jimi’s recording engineer did panning in stereo so you can hear the guitar in one ear, then the other. Sometimes it sounds like multiple guitarists.
"D'yer Makr" is a mispronunciation of Jamaica. It's actually the punchline to an old joke in the UK.
Two Cockneys are catching up over a pint, and one says "The wife just got back from 'oliday in the Carribean." The other says "Oh. D'yer Makr?" and the first guy says "No she went of 'er own free will."
I didn't know how to pronounce that title for years. 😅
Besr LZ Album with best LZ song D'yer Maker.
During "No Quarter" nothing is better that watching you do Air Guitar!!! The phrase "No Quarter" according to Websters Dictionary means " no pity or mercy. used to say that an enemy, opponent, etc., is treated in a very harsh way." And that's the way they treated that Song... Very Harsh, Rough and Without mercy!!!
Very, you're the Best 😊
"No Quarter" is just amazing musically, lyrically/'story, emotionally.
Thats a fuzz distortion on "No Quarter", Verdy.
Love you girl. More please. Don't forget Lara Fabian, or David Phelps. The greatest female, amd male singer on planet earth ! Only their most popular live videos. They sing better live than others do in the studio. Until next time stay well and poppin for fresh. Zep is my favorite rock band of all time. Thank you
LUV!!
Robert was singing into a glass for this song
#repsect No Quarter gets me every time.
The 'pace' of the songs on this LP reminds us that killer riffs, vocals, emotions, drums don't have to be at a constant state of high speed and energy to be powerful 😊.
Ps....the 'Ocean' felt like spreading PB & Jelly on bread.....😊😊...always tastes good......
