- We were sent a Deadman Off-road ground anchor to add to our recovery equipment. In this video we get our Land Rover Defender intentionally bogged on the beach in order to test the Deadman.
Check out this video to see if we can pull our heavy overland camper free using only our winch and a piece of canvas buried in the sand.
As the Deadman doubles as a tree protector and is roughly the same size we replaced our tree protector sling with the Deadman and now have a piece of equipment that has multiple functions.
There have been many situations over my twenty years of driving off-road that a dedicated ground anchor could have had me free much faster than other means when driving solo. In a situation where your vehicle is completely bottomed out on the chassis both sides the amount of digging required to use recovery boards would be much greater than burying the Deadman. Stuck in deep mud would also be a time when the Deadman would be advantageous.
The Deadman can also be wrapped around a large boulder to assist in pulling you free. Check out the link below to the Deadman Off-road website.

Used the boat anchor style sand anchor for years and always hated it. They are great for rubbing the paint of the roof rack and a pain to get down and put back up without scratching the truck body... This makes so much more sense and doubles as a tree saver too. Try that with a boat anchor! And I've got the perfect spot on the roof rack for it.
Good video!
Hey Leigh, nice t-shirt mate :) love the video, I need a winch to go with my dead man:)
If you have nothing else, put a strap or a rope loop around a spare wheel and bury that the deeper the better. In fact it was all we used to winch off in soft sand with the old engine driven capstan winch on the series 1 LR, years ago.
You are the number one man,l have the old type steal sand anchor similar looking to a boat, the problem is weight and storage at around 13kg it's heavy. Yours is light and can be used for other purposes ,next time your in Victoria can you let me know where your camped and what time you go to bed.
Always something different and useful, and if it comes with a Nirvana smiley version... a lot better.
Nice video Leigh. You couldn't pay me to purposefully get my vehicle stuck on a beach, with my luck a sneaker wave would roll on the beach and take the vehicle. Stay safe and healthy you guys.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Well done, Great video And all well said.
thank you for your detailed video
know about deadman unit use a long time
Epic bit of gear! Nice job bogging grizzly too :)
Really informative video-now I wish I would have picked one up on their Kickstarter campaign!
Great product.👍🏻
Cheers tobolth of you. 🍺&🍷
I would highly recommend to have a jackhammer in the car if you once need the deadman to use in a City! Concrete is a … to dig! :D
Brilliant! Great logo too😵
You could add a winch break to this gear , very worth it, even a blanket over the cable will do
Love your videos keep up the good work
Jerry can works fine buried as anchor or anything you have with you.
Information et démonstration très intéressantes ; merci pour cette vidéo de qualité.
Genial , je cours en commander un !
in real conditions I think it all depends on how heavy your vehicle is, I believe the sand ladder is more effective
I have two types of ground anchor the big boat style and another which is a long flat plate (that you align with direction of pull) with holes drilled in through which you bang stakes (up to 5) and winch off that. Both are heavy options that live in my garage. I haven't had a trip where I thought I'd need them yet.
The ability to use the dead man sail in snow could be useful here in Scotland.
I use my spare tyre. But if I had money I would buy one of these
Anyone doubting how dangerous winches and recovery gear can be needs to watch Ronny Dahl’s video about it on his channel, lots of destroyed cars and decapitated dummies. Sobering stuff.
He did a great job cutting the tow ball shank but it took him cutting it farther a second time to get the shank to break. So he showed people that it will not break unless you cut most of the way off, it was NOT the smart thing to do. His video is used by people that say see he had to cut the tow ball 3/4 of the way off to break it. He enforced in many people that it will not break.
Did you take off a propshaft? How did you get it in 2wd, I'm pretty keen to know!
Cheers mate 🍻
I'm guessing he means that he didn't use diff locks, as the defender is permanent 4wd, unlike the old series landys.
you can do it with your spare tire if you need
Good and simple video guys thanks, do you have any advice on what brand of winch to buy for somthing like the weight of your car and camper? Cheers stay safe.
My friend wanted one of them but when he saw the price he ask me for a cheaper option so I gave him some 1 tonn bags & 2 10tonnes lifting straps.
Love your test!😍
how did you put your car into 2 Wheel drive when you got it stuck?
my Td4 110 crew cab can't do it. cheers 🙏🏻
good to know about using it in snow .....eh
If you had no winch, could you wrap a recovery line around the front driving wheel? Thanks
Coffin Bay = great oysters
The deadman will also be really good to remove fallen down rocks on a mountain road.
sorry i write too quick, you know the tryck of spare tire
Deadman gear in Coffin Bay? 😊😊
The deadman is a nice product. But you can always bury a sandladder 😅
But I can't wrap a sand ladder around a tree 😉
2 weel drive?
Mate, you are lazy… hahah
get really bogged down in soft sand till the floor plates…or bottom less mud!!!
Then do your recovery exercise..
Good luck, like your vids
Cheers
Haha been there done that many times 🤣🤣🤣
Sorry, never snatch from a…….?? What was that last part?
Tow ball
Tu prends ta roue de secours !,
Can you use this tool also for big trucks?
In a basket configuration, the Minimum Breaking Strength = 66,000 lbs.
@@Dode1936 Thanks for the answer! What does „basket configeration“ mean?
All four straps coming together to one connection point, like shown in the video, is considered a Basket Configuration. The Deadman Off-Road website explains + shows the different configurations one can use the Earth Anchor (tree saver, winch extension line, rock hugger, safety barrier to string up across a trail as a warning, ground mat to work on your rig…).
@@Dode1936 Thanks!
“Never snatch a vehicle from a tow-bull…” What does that mean?
Tow Ball.
The point that you attach a trailer to your car should never be used as a point to snatch a vehicle.
They can snap off and kill.
Could it also be used as a hammock?
Yes it can 😊 More like a hammock seat really as it's not long enough to last down in.
Did you / anybody ever combine the deadman sand anchor with the spare in order to increase weight, e.g., if the sand is too light?
Hi Seven, it is not the weight of the material on top of the Deadman Off-Road Earth Anchor giving the resistance. Rather all of the dirt/sand in-between you (and your stuck vehicle) and where you buried it. If you were unable to burry the Earth Anchor to say the length of just a few spools left on your winch (which then would generate the strongest pulling force), I would recommend burying the Earth Anchor deeper than the suggested 2 feet. The hole's flat wall closest to your stuck rig is what the Earth Anchor resists too. Note you are doing a linear pull along the ground, not a vertical one. Hope that all helps answer your question.
@@Dode1936 many thx!
I've seen sand anchors a lot easier and quicker than that one
Do tell...
@@henrycolestage4249 1 example is the one from Sherpa
@@darrengray2309 I've had one like that and while it was fast and fantastic in reasonably solid ground, it was not good in gravel or sand. It just made furrows like a farmer's field. It was also heavy and hard to stow safely. My tuppence worth, anyway.
Pas de sous-titres en français cette fois... Sniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiifffffffffff...
Not a very good demonstration. You got stuck without lockers. Then get out with your lockers on. looks like you could have made it out without the deadman and just use your diff lockers.(ie. you were not that stuck! Maybe make a new video showing you bogged with the diff lockers on? then we'll know it was the dead man that got you out.
