  • This week's episode I'm joined by Cassandra James. You may know Cassandra best from her current role as Dr. Terry Randolph, first transgender character, on General Hospital and she has a new series “Sort Of” coming soon to HBO Max.
Cassandra James is a proudly out transgender woman and is passionate politically about her community and is outspoken about visibility and diversity in the industry. Talking with Cassandra was extraordinary. I was so excited to be present and to listen to what she’s been through in her life. From this incredible conversation I believe it will help me to be a better ally for the transgender community.

I hope her new show doesn't mean we're losing her from GH! Congrats, Cassandra, and thank you both for this interview.
Personally, I wanted a Drew and Terri romance shortly after Oscar's death. I thought they'd connect well over that shared experience. Not sure what the chemistry will be like with this new actor, but maybe the writers will give it a go? She'd be a great stepmother to Scout! Otherwise, I'd like to see her being wined and dined by Jax.

If we're waiting for Jax to wine and dine anyone, it'll be a really long wait.
I respect the actors for sticking to their convictions and choices while knowing that the consequences would be to have to part ways with GH, at least for now. If the current mandates are ever lifted, then perhaps Steve & Igor will return.
For now I won't be surprised if the role of Jason is recast and the role of Jax just referred to with him being offscreen. 💜🌻

I hope that this budding romance between them will put them both on our screens more often. I wonder if it is awkward to date your sister's boss? She is so blessed that she had parents who embraced her and how she came to the realization of who she truly was/is. So many LBGTQ people aren't blessed with that. Some cultures as you said Maurice, don't always understand or embrace being open to it. I think it's so important for people to be authentically who they are because when they hide that I believe it has a detrimental effect on their mental health. The depth and level of misogynistic indoctrination on women from birth is so extreme most don’t even realize the extent of it’s dangerous effects. I remember back in the early 80's GH had a character that was portrayed by the late actor Christopher Morley. He was a well-known cross-dresser, not trans, who during the Left-handed boy episodes played a female bar owner who in the final episode's twist gave us his reveal as a man. Kudos to GH then and now for having the courage to showcase diverse actors and characters on the show.

Love her! Big fan of GH for over 40 years. She is beautiful and a good character. Looking forward to her character finally getting a bigger story line. I had a similar experience to Elizabeth’s character: in 1985 I went to a party in my home town during the holidays and was reunited with a high school friend who I did not recognize at first because she had transitioned. We were both only 21 years old at the time and she was a VERY rare case of someone transitioning at age 18 back then. I was so curious and pulled her aside at the party and I was SO GLAD she told me her story (we had been theater nerds together in high school). We grew up in a conservative place in the midwest so my poor friend went through hell. Because of her immediate openness with me-and her extreme generosity at answering my probably overly intrusive questions at the time-I instantly felt I understood and did not consider her a “freak” at all. I use that word because that was the immediate response of most people back then-even many gay people were not kind to the trans community back then. From that moment on, 100% due to my friend’s generosity and disclosure-I became a trans supporter. I tried to tell people my friend’s story (I lived in NYC and she stayed in the midwest) whenever I met people who were dismissive or ignorant of trans people. Her story was VERY similar to what I have heard of Cassandra’s story all these decades later. I am so happy to see these people become less marginalized but it has taken a long, long time. My final wish though, is that trans people will just be thought of as people. Period. I do not feel defined by my gender in any way. Some people will always define me that way, but I ignore it. I can be categorized but never defined by gender, sexuality, political party, age, weight, looks, religious beliefs-so much. I hope we can all be more free to be the individuals we are. But THANK YOU-for thoughtful interviews with people. So illuminating.

I must admit, I have never been accepting to things like transgender, etc until I saw Cassandra James on General Hospital. I've always appreciated the 'work' that she went through to be who she is right now. Cassandra is gorgeous and has a lovely attitude and smile. I'm not used to the she/he thing either but I see where Cassandra deserves it. What is done in her life is between her and her maker. I think that she deserves to be a representative of others who may not be able to handle what they are going through.

My son came out last year. I was blessed to have worked with youth my entire career. I was very cognizant of the suicide rate in the community. I knew how important acceptance and support was going to be in his journey. I just pray that parents will learn to suspend judgment and lead with love for their children.

An eye opening interview for sure. No matter who we are or what mental disease we have, I learned here that we are all struggling one way or another. What a beautiful lady and her story and yours Maurice have given you both the strength to speak out your truths. With the situation in the world today and myself being isolated, my diagnoses of BPD has been popping up again. But this time I'm more aware of the issues that arise and now able to deal with them in a better way. I am grateful for this interview. It helped me see that I am really okay.

I love Cassandra and her character Terry! I’m glad to see an interview with her and Maurice and although Maurice didn’t always say things the right way I think he meant well
Example @0:36 saying she is “the first transgender” should be worded as “the first transgender person”. Just as you would do with race or sexuality you don’t say 1st black or 1st gay without the word person after.

Amazing interview, Cassandra is beautiful, and talented actress. I finally understood the transgender community after watching Katie Couric show. I am confused about Katlyn Jenner because she dates women, but my heart and mind is open to learning the struggle of the community. Maurice, you were wonderful with allowing her to speak about her life and struggles to being who she is and her journey. I must also say Maurice, your acting has grown to a height of outstanding perfection.
