Don't forget about 13 years of incompetence. There's a reason why the 1997 Election went the way it did, the voters just got fed up with them, and it looks like we're heading towards that feeling of wanting to see the back of them again.

As a Scot who is anti Scottish independence and definitely not an SNP supporter, I have to admit that if the UK ends up with another Tory govt. because working class English people are gluttons for punishment, then I may reconsider my view on independence. The absolute disaster that is Liz Truss, should be enough to convince people.
I'm same as you. I want to stay in the union, i just want them to change the electoral system so whoever wins a plurality doesn't get a stonking majority.

People hated Corbyn. He probably would have found a way to make Labour look even worse than the Tories. Starmer has done well to avoid controversy and gain swing voters.

US binary thinking is far worse. While we are still 2 party system we do have some 3rd parties winning seats, forming coalitions often at lower levels and some councils controlled by neither of the 2 parties.
Voting smaller party may not be wise for the general unless they have a chance of winning in your area. In my area, it is SNP or Tory for the general. I'm in Scotland and every other election is conducted by some form of PR so I do vote for the party i like most of the time

Our undemocratic electoral system requires tactical voting. Currently we have a choice of Tory or Tory light. PR is overdue and we need to push Labour to support it. (Lib Dems and Greens already do btw) We need to get the Tories out after 13 years of misery.
PR ends up with mass coalitions who don't agree with themselves, verses other coalitions who don't agree with you. Essentially you get a hung parliament forever. I know there are examples where it works but you need to do more than throw PR in to fix the HoC.
I think there are many people like me, who agree with you 100% but don't believe Labour desire PR in any way or shape. It won't work for the party. It will destroy it.

@@phooogle PR is democratic and consensus mitigates extremes. In simple terms, the buggers can do less damage. More! Of course I want more but won't write a dissertation on here. Fixing our unfit parliamentary system and standards of behaviour are also essential.
Agree that we need a more representative voting system, but pure PR gives a lot of power to parties. I'd prefer a proportional system where you vote for specific candidates rather than parties, and allows multiple candidates from the same party to run in the same area without stealing votes from one another. IMO I think an STV system with multi-seat constituencies achieves this best. But TBH I'll take anything over FPTP.

Labour is promising to be a competent version of the Tories, I'd much rather have a minority government of collapsed conservative party, than a centre-right labour party, that is shaping up to remove any left wing influence it has, with a majority.
And that in itself is the problem! We need voting reform and Starmer is unwilling to support it, despite Labour membership overwhelmingly voting in favor of it. Unless Labour officially support voting reform, the ideal outcome for me at the next election is a hung parliament, allowing a smaller party who supports voting reform to sway the outcome.
Oh well, maybe the Labour party should listen instead of constantly attacking their own base then eh

Well, to be fair, it depends on the constituency. In many Tory rural seats, the only realistic opposition is the Lib Dems - Labour is very unpopular and doesn’t stand a chance in such seats.
Precisely the fundamental flaw with fptp voting systems. Generations of choosing between the lesser of two evils obviously can only result in evil winning. Neither of the major nor midling parties can be trusted to rule, as such you not only have an ethical but practical reason to shift political power from incompetant parties towards citizens through direct democracy, scrapping of local elections etc. Ofc it wont happen, as the only ones whom hold enough political capital to make these changes are the tories and labour, and both have more to lose than gain from a more democratic system. And so, were just fucked👍
No mention of the media coverage of his predecessor? Almost none of it was positive and many since have denied that they voted for the Tories but against labour. The last election was a classic of FPTP in that less than 40% of the vote, not much more than thirty taking turnout into account, resulted in a large majority for the Tories when over half the electorate didn't vote for them.

@@noeyes6151 Very little mention in most of UK media of the fact that tax rises since the last election were higher than those proposed by Corbyn, with interest rates as they are the same for mortgages.
‘Taking turnout into account’ is laughable. FPTP has existed in some form for over a century, its current form for 7 decades.
By all means pretend it’s the electoral system, and not the fact their economic plans (mass requisition, compulsory purchase and/or nationalisation of shares at below-market value - also known as ‘theft’) would have made Liz Truss’s impact on markets look minimal by comparison. There is a reason the Labour Party ran wargames at their conferences in the late 2010s for a run on the pound and mass exodus of capital from the country in the event they got elected - it may be worth asking why.
@@glassmuxxic Evidently Truss didn't run those wargames and assuming that policies would have made it through the House of Commons seems a stretch. Of course it's the electoral system if a large majority of seats doesn't need even half the votes. The media coverage was unique in its' one sidedness in my lifetime, given how incompetent the Tories have been ignoring the way it was covered just seems bizarre.
@@glassmuxxic You describe re-nationalisation as theft, which is funny, seeing as all of the national assets were virtually given away to private, mainly foreign, business interests, who promptly sacked half of the staff, raised prices almost overnight, invested nothing whatsoever in the businesses, and creamed off £billions at our expense. That is an example of theft, what should be done is simply re-aquiring what was corruptly sold for a song.

One thing to consider is that Labour can gain power more readily in a hung parliament than can the Conservatives. That's because most of the smaller parties would be willing to enter into a coalition or C&S arrangement with them. This is not the case with the Tories - not even the Unionist will bite this time. Labour don't even need to be the largest party.
As FPTP benefits Labour more than it does the Tories, an overall majority is on its way. Question is what will they do with it. Remember how Labour left the economy in 1979 and 2010.
All the more reason to vote REFORM !

At this point I don't think the Liberal Democrats are very Liberal or at least they are not Classically Liberal or Libertarian for which if you want real Liberalism, you have to vote for UKIP or the SDP since these days the Liberal Democrats are just Labour with a slightly (Modern) Liberal Touch while the Conservatives are just Labour but at the speed of Stephenson's Rocket instead of an LNER Class A4 locomotive (which is the speed for implementing die-hard Socialism that Labour is at)

He's just parroting what the media and the pollsters say. Neither of these groups face any real consequences for getting things wrong so they have no incentive to improve the accuracy of their predictions.

Did you know for example that they overstated the pollsters overstated the voter share of the labour party in almost every general election in the last 40 years? You never hear this mentioned even when Starmer's Labour underperformed in the last two council elections. There's just this assumption they know what they are doing: they don't.

The tories have been going about the immigration thing totally wrong. The majority of British people have no problem with legal immigration & the way how they measure net migration is totally wrong yet they are trying to cut down net migration by putting in policies to try to deter people which wouldn't benefit the UK in anyway. I also don't think the majority of people like how unnecessarily cruel the tories are being in regards to refugees.
People keep blaming migration issues on the migrants, when it's the government who has handled it poorly. Putting the burden on both citizens and migrants.
I think most British people were ok with legal immigration, but now they are legally letting in over a million people legally.

Tories are just being tories, it has always been their way to blame someone else for the problems they themselves have created. When you refuse to accept asylum applications via visits to UK embassies, then insist that asylum applications will only be accepted after the applicants arrive in the UK, then it is no surprise that migrants have to cross the channel in small boats, so they can make their application, here, in the UK, as the government have demanded. Calling them "illegal immigrants" is the icing on the cake, as the UK is duty bound, by agreements with the United Nations, and as founder members of the Council of Europe under the ECHR, to confer aid and shelter to immigrants, until their applications for asylum have been processed. Just to clarify, the ECHR has nothing to do with the EU, despite what the Tories are claiming, and was set up in the aftermath of WWII, to protect the human rights of every citizen residing in Europe, including the right to free speech, freedom of assembly, the right to a fair trial, the guarantee of freedom from oppression or tyranny, freedom from torture, freedom of religion, and many more. Only 3 countries have ever left the ECHR, Greece, after a military coup, who rejoined after democracy was restored, Russia and Belarus, who resigned from the ECHR on the same day that Russia invaded the Ukraine, last February.
the question i ask is will it be sustained the tories will likley call an autum election in 2024 if the economy looks like it will significantly improve by then and with behind the scenes divsions in the labour party infighting may be on the horizon. the question is who will seem like the safest choice in autum 2024 i think a moderate conservtiv majority is the mostly likley outcome
Inflation is falling but only because last years data is dropping out not because of any action from the government. So don’t let them fool you. And because inflation fell doesn’t mean cheaper prices it just means the increases aren’t as fast.
Proportional Representation is the only thing that can save the UK as a democracy.

The media’s collective eye roll at Labour reminds me of what DW and German media did a year ago to Scholz and his SPD. When the media operates in an echo chamber, the party that’s been in power seems malleable to the will of the pundits. Labour needs to win to put an end to that. Society needs a shakeup.

NGL I HATE the way we treat a parliamentary system like a presidency.
I don't agree with how labour has been moved since Corbyn (partially because they tried to get rid of me, despite volunteering for them to get out the vote because I started when I was out of university which happened to be under Jeremy) as it seems to be like how the US Democratic Party leans toward the right which doesn't help the ratchet effect. But they are obviously better than what we've suffered since 2010.
Personally I would rather PR to be brought in, an anti gerrymandering committee set up. But I will settle for tactical voting until those are available.
The important question is will the labour party actually do anything or just be the same spineless party has hasn't been able to take advantage of the many tory blunders and improve the country. This could easily be a poisoned chalice that results in a another 10 years of tory rule destroying the country after labour does absolutely nothing.
The answer is clear labour under Starmer administration will not do anything radical.
Last time the Labour party were in power, 1997 - 2010, they did an awful lot for everyone in this country. For a start they fixed the NHS, that had been ruthlessly dismantled by the previous 18 years under Tory rule, and they did so without resorting to high taxation austerity. So, I can confidently say that a Labour government will do a lot more than nothing, but you can carry on believing the Tory media if you wish to. I lived under the Thatcher regime, and remember well, all of the excesses and deprivations that she caused, all for the sake of ideology, just like the current lot. The only reason that the Tories were able to form a coalition government, with the Lib-dems, in 2010, is that Labour, under Brown, was crucified by the Tory media for saving the banking industry from collapse after the banking crisis of 2007-2008, as if he had any other choice. What was Brown supposed to do, just stand on the sidelines and watch, as every working man and woman in the UK, lost every penny they had because the banks went to the wall? It's all well and good for the fabulously wealthy Tory media owners to stash their funds in offshore accounts, and invest millions into shares, but the average working man/woman does not have that option.
