Can someone explain to me the compulsion to detract from the cathedral's magnificent beauty by obscuring it under so garish an array of colored lights?
I understand that sometimes beauty is individually perceived. But I didn't find the lights garish. It was all part of the magnificent beauty, and did not detract for me. I find that the natural earth itself has many different material textures, styles, and variations of light and color. There are the pastels, the muted tones, and the vibrant brilliancy of pulsating color in a very natural state of things, with everything in between. Someone else recently told me within the last few months that neon colors were not 'natural' and I wondered at their sad blocking out of so many things that occur in earth's natural state. There is color everywhere! And I think we got the 'neon' color idea from nature itself, anyway. They are in flowers and in light refraction and the sky and... and... Sparklies, oh my, if we think / believe that a Creator Being organized / created this earth, how that Being must love sparklies! If we don't 'believe', the sparklies are still there :D Yet, if these colors seem garish to you, perhaps you would dislike a few added sparklies, but I ;) wouldn't mind and why wouldn't they fit in an edifice dedicated to a beneficent Being? If that Being is the one who made the earth, looks like God likes sparklies, too! Snow in the sunlight, millions of tiny 'diamonds' sparkling brilliantly across the expanse; Water, the ocean, the rivers, even often a brook within a forest landscape, has sparkles from light that gets in between the leaves of trees. And occasionally a definite sheen even in what many consider murky waters of a swamp... I don't know if you've ever seen barbed wire fences after an ice storm, but an ice storm creates MILLIONS of sparkles even if there is no snow; and rainbows! Truly a delightful panorama of both color and sparkle. Each barb every so inches on each strand of wire, is a rainbow and a sparkle. There are rocks, considered by some to be base sediment, that sparkle. And I don't mean with gold or silver, although I suppose there is that, also. Other minerals ie mica type sparkle, sometimes all mixed in like chocolate chips are in a cookie dough recipe, other times more departmentalized, but always just as sparkly as far as that which sparkles. Some items from regions in the USA that include 'petrified' substance, are very glowy with color. A friend of mine had a large one that was an iridescent blue, hard as rock, not transparent, but as if the glow came from within and surrounded... Garish? I didn't consider it so, anymore than (if we believe in a Deity Creator) I think God had lack of taste when I see inside a geode. If you are not familiar with them, look it up, they are delightful. Usually calm, muted tones on the outside, with pulsating excitement inside. There are lots of places to look, but here's one. geology.com/articles/geodes/ Sometimes, I cringe when they are cut or broken open, it reminds me of people who would rather keep their private exuberance from the public eye. I know it's silly, and I love the display, but I still feel that way. Which is part of my personal perception / emotional reaction. We all have them. But that doesn't mean the rock ;) is all that disturbed, or that the Cathedral's display is necessarily 'wrong' or out of keeping with the encompassing artistry! Seems to fit in with what the 'hand of God' would do, quite well ! Best Wishes~
The cathedral is an unfinished building, with only two-thirds of the proposed building completed, due to several major stylistic changes and work interruptions.
Before you judge, remember that there are three very large faiths in the world, they are: Roman Catholic Church, Orthodox Catholic Church and Anglo-Catholic Church (Anglican)
Sadly the pipe organ has been out of commission undergoing repairs for the passed couple years due receiving heavy smoke damage from the Crypt Fire. Hopefully it'll be fully restored, revoiced, and reinstalled really soon. It's such a beautiful sounding instrument.
I really appreciate the time you spent to do these. And maybe you did in some of them, but the whole two I have seen so far ;) hasn't had a lot of talktalktalk. Sometimes, okay, I'm okay with commentary, depending on what that commentary is, but not always and forever about everything. Sometimes it's nice to just watch. So I usually start out by muting my computer's sound! I forgot to here, and it wasn't needed. I confess, yes, that music at the end was rather a jolt, but hey, it's your space and someone else might like it!
