    Ask me anything about the 2021 Mazda 3 Skyactiv-X hatchback!

      Does this have the Spirit 1.1 update to the X engine?

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  3 года назад +2

      @@DBSTH0R I don't think so - it was listed as having 180 PS and 224 Nm on the spec sheet that the car came with. Power is supposed to be bumped to 190 PS and torque to 240 Nm, right? In that case, most likely no. I will reach out to Mazda and ask and when they reply, I ll get back to you.

    • @DBSTH0R
      @DBSTH0R 3 года назад +1

      @@OneTireFire Thanks. The compression ratio went down to 15:1 in the updated engine, and while the new torque peak is at 4500 rpm, the previously available 224 Nm should now be available at 2100 rpm with more than 224 Nm at 3000 rpm. While this doesn't tell us much - there is one video on YT which shows the X engine on a dyno which shows that torque curve actually has a "dent" in the mid rev range right after 3000 rpm IIRC (apparently a common Mazda naturally aspirated engine tuning). This should explain the lack of "omph" in your video when accelerating.
      From what I was able to gather by watching Japanese videos of the updated engine - the new power delivery is improved and more linear when compared to the original version. Also, they say the initial lag when stepping on the accelerator is gone. Pedal responsiveness is apparently also much quicker.

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  3 года назад +2

      @@DBSTH0R My tester certainly exhibited some lag when stomping on the gas, that's for sure (and since it was the manual, this can't be attributed to the transmission).
      I saw the torque curve too and I did notice the 'dip' you describe. Then, when I finally got to drive the car, I also experienced it on the move. It's nothing major, but it's not as punchy as you'd like it to be at lower rpms.
      Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed comment!

      I have but one more question - have you tried Skyactiv-X paired with an AT? If so, what are your impressions after driving a manual?

    I've been saying this ever since this generation was released: it truly looks like it came out of an Italian design studio, both hatchback and sedan. Even though I know it didn't in reality, you can really see Mazda designers were inspired by Italian designs of the past...I see some Alfa Romeo Brera influence in the hatchback. The style plus the excellent minimalist interior were enough to win me over, now I proudly drive a 2021 Mazda 3 turbo hatch in machine gray with red leather interior.😎 It's been great so far, only minor issues with the infotainment screen (has gone blank on me twice, have to pull over, shut down and restart) keeps me from saying it's been perfect. Yes the latest Civic is a great car as well and the Corolla is well built and gets great gas mileage, but don't skip driving the Mazda 3 if you're shopping for a compact car. It may not work for everyone, but I guarantee you'll want to seriously consider it after a drive. (Especially the turbo)

    Funny enough With the knee spage in the rear... I am 180 cm and I have nearly 10 cm of knee space when, sitting 'behind' myself🤷 absolutely a very well made version, the 100 year anniversery model 3. And pleasing to the eye.

      We might have a different arm and leg to body length and those 3 extra cm may count too. I do agree that it feels like a quality product inside and pretty too.

      Yeah me too but i think it also depends on the driver's sitting position. Even with the cx3 sitting behind my driving position is not a problem. Still have plenty of room at the rear.

      I like it too, but apparently some people find it a bit much. It's probably the car I'd buy from its class right now, although I'm not basing this on its looks alone - I'd love to try out the US-spec 2.5 turbo all-wheel drive...

      I have a full-spec skyactive-x hatch. It does have an auto-rev match feature, but only when upscaling. It will rev match when shifting from 3rd to 4th for example. And you can use android auto with traffic sign recognition, just use Waze instead of google maps, and it will do it. As for the engine, you need to understand what you're buying. It's a naturally aspirated engine. It's not a turbo. Torque starts to build after 2000rpm, and at 3000rpm you have it's peak. Also, it has long gears. You can cross 90km/h in 2nd gear... and because of that, I have mine doing between 4.7-5.2l/100km on a 21km trip, 30% city, the rest extra-urban, cruising at 90kph or lower. Find me another naturally-aspirated 180hp petrol engine with this consumption... Without much care for fuel economy, i usually average about 5.7-5.8 l/100km. If you do a lot of city, expect 7.5-8l. Now, nearly all reviewers keep comparing it against turbo engines. Guess, what: it's not a turbo people! If you want a fair comparison go pick another na engine, and then we'll talk!

    Love the wine red leather, don't like mixing it with white on the dash and doors. In North America the red is seats, console armrest/trim, dash and doors. Looks much better and more cohesive to my eyes. I wish Mazda would offer the Skyactiv X here, but we already have a good range with the 2.0l, 2.5l/2.5l turbo.

    • @OneTireFire

      That 2.5 liter turbo with all-wheel drive is a great combo. We don't get it here in Europe, sadly...

      @@OneTireFire Oh yes, and hopefully I will be an owner of a hatchback turbo very soon. I'm just waiting for my 2016 GTI to sell, havent found the right buyer yet. I liked the new Mazda 3 when it came out, but not quite enough for me to give up my GTI, but I test drove the turbo about 5 weeks ago and I'm sold. Sure the 6 speed auto holds the performance back a bit, but honestly feels just as quick as my GTI, but almost no wheelspin due to the AWD. I can't wait😎

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  3 года назад

      @@jbm0866 Well, Mazda has made it clear that no variant from the current 3 lineup is a hot hatch, so it can't replace an actual hot hatch, like a GTI. And yeah, offering a manual in that configuration would have made the 3 more fun.

    • @jbm0866
      @jbm0866 3 года назад +1

      @@OneTireFire I'm fine with it not being a Mazdaspeed 3, and literally the only things I'd be giving up versus the GTI are cargo space (which I rarely max out on the GTI, the 3 will be fine) and a slight bit of rear seat leg and headroom, and maybe a bit of handling prowess. Having said that, the Mazda has more torque and horsepower and AWD without paying the Golf R premium price. The only thing that really bothers me is the torsion beam rear suspension, but like reviewers have said..it's really not noticeable unless you go around a particularly bumpy corner, or take it to a track. It was unnoticeable to me during my test drive, and I won't be tracking my daily driver. I'm nearing 40 now, no street racing for me...but I'm sure the Mazda 3 would be a bit of a sleeper for that use.😁

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  3 года назад

      @@jbm0866 I too found the torsion beam fades into the background in most driving situations. In my city, however, there are lots of poorly integrated tram lines and if you take those at speed, you can feel the rear end get unsettled. And also over some bigger bumps that you only take with one of the two rear wheels; you also feel it then, but it's not as bad as in some other cars with similar solutions.

    What do people in Europe and specifically your country think of Mazda cars as a brand?

    • @OneTireFire

      They are really seen more as a niche buy. People who own Mazdas here are usually quite loyal to the brand too.

    • @ucube33

      It holds value well because it is known to be very reliable and it has very generous warranties. While also being fun to drive for the price. Some towns have almost no Mazdas, some towns have a lot of Mazdas. Depends on the success of the dealership and the socio-economic status of the city

      @@Denis-nc1lbI've had 3 of those four marques (2010 Audi A3 quattro, 2011 BMW 328i, 2016 VW GTI) and can honestly say I don't miss any of them since I got my 2021 Mazda 3 turbo hatch. Build quality is just as good or better, interior and sound system are better. The BMW and VW handled well and were fun to drive (Audi was kind of boring) but so is the Mazda...with less worry about reliability. Since people in the UK don't value Mazda I'm guessing prices for used models are a steal?😊
