    The scene where a woman finds out Jimmy/Saul isn't Kevin Costner is a reference to a scene in Breaking Bad with Walter and Saul.

    where Saul brings up that he once convinced a woman he was Kevin Costner.

    You might notice throughout this season that as much as Jimmy tried to stay on the straight and narrow, everyone he came across sized him up as how they saw him. Betsy Kettleman tells him "you're the kind of lawyer guilty people hire", Mike chuckles when Jimmy asks "what made you think I would spill that coffee?", and Nacho leaves him his contact information saying "for when you realize you're in the game". Almost every character sees Jimmy one way regardless of how much Jimmy tries to be seen as legitimate. Chuck was probably the only person throughout the season that was keeping him in line which is what makes Chuck's true feelings about Jimmy's inabillity to change all the more painful.
    I like to think this ending is Jimmy realizing he needs to truly figure out who he is for himself and start living life on his own terms. It's open-ended and in my opinion this season is the perfect foundation for the series going forward. Glad you guys are digging this show as much as you have.

      Yeah, people keep overstating how morally good and capable Mike is. Dude is constantly underestimating people because of who they *appear* to be. Walter's just some nerd with insecurity issues, Jimmy's just a crooked lawyer, Gus is just a professional businessman. He even recognized that Walt was a time bomb, and still couldn't get out of the way fast enough, because he was too busy giving self-aggrandizing moral lectures. If he spent less time trying to pretend like he knows everything, he might have more friends, and might have picked a better line of work.

      Jimmy through this season was Matty with Mike. Everyone told him to go dirty, everyone told him to break, and he couldn't do it, because of his brother. Just like Matty couldn't because of his father. When the person who was their hero themselves is telling them to debase themselves, that's when they break.

    Jimmy is questioning EVERYTHING about himself (The Good and The Bad) and about how to get what HE wants the way HE decides. This is a turning point for how Jimmy's going to guide his life and how he's not going to let anything stand in his way anymore.

      I think you might be right. First seasons for experimental shows are always iffy. Since the script writing as well as the vast majority of the filming has to be done before the first episode airs. The production costs of the entire first season has to be paid for before you get any money or even audience reviews. It is all too common that shows just simply decide a second season won't make financial sense. Its common practice to attempt to hedge your bets on a first season of any show.

    Jimmy doesn’t want to take the deal because he became a lawyer to earn Chuck’s approval. He is now punishing Chuck as well as caving into Chuck’s pronouncement that Jimmy will always be slipping Jimmy.
    Marco loved Jimmy for who he is at heart, a clever funny scoundrel. Chuck despised that personality so jimmy tried to be what he thought Chuck wanted. Now that he knows Chuck never wanted him to succeed as a lawyer, Jimmy doesn’t want to continue down that path. It’s for two reasons: 1, he’s no longer motivated to impress Chuck and 2, he believes Chuck was right that people don’t change; he’s condemning himself to remain Slippin’ Jimmy because of Chuck’s rejection and Marco’s fawning admiration.

    Chuck was able to keep him from getting registered as a sex offender. But because of that he had to move out to NM and leave his life behind, plus no matter how much he straightened his life out Chuck still sees him as that person. That's how he's "still paying" for it. But this does give a little more context for why Chuck would be so against Jimmy joining his firm (even if he did keep him from joining in the shittiest way possible).

  • @dog-eared6991
    @dog-eared6991 5 лет назад +141

    Jimmy has just been told by the brother that he loves that he can never be legitimate and will always be the worst version of himself. So he is beginning to internalize that point of view. It's not about having the money, it's about what he thinks he deserves. It's similar to Walter White, who wasn't truly in it just for the money but the power that he had in the drug business.

    There's a really good scene at the end of the episode. He's going to the interview and he's looking right, east like the Kennedy half-dollar. He's looking at the old world, his past. When we should be looking west, at the new world, his future.
    It's also really highlighted by the golden sun in his hair.

  • @ShadeKetchum

    I'm shocked at your confusion of the ending. It's fairly simple. He's done everything up to this point to please Chuck, trying to take the moral path like them and change his ways, but he realized it'll never be good enough for Chuck and some others. But he had the time of his life getting to be himself again in Chicago, so he's decided to start living like himself again. It's basically a "Then Let Me Be Evil" type of situation. In short, he's decided to start acting like Slipping Jimmy because he likes it and it's truer to who he is inside, instead of acting like somebody he's not for Chuck's benefit and approval, which he'll likely never get.

    • @j3pelfrey
      @j3pelfrey 5 месяцев назад

      I think that what Chuck hates most about Jimmy is the fact that "He will never change" He has hate and contempt for the fact that Jimmy will never grow or evolve. The ironic thing is that Chuck can't change or grow. Chuck hates himself. Chuck can't stand injustice and he feels that, if the world is just then, Jimmy will forever slip. Jimmy had love and admiration from people, Chuck had respect. This was fine by Chuck because at least had something he thought Jimmy could never have or earn. As long as this "BALANCE" is maintained Chuck can handle things (sort of.) Then Jimmy passes the bar. Chuck sandbags Jimmy at every turn after this because Chuck feels that this is unfair and not just. Chuck knows on some level that what Jimmy did by getting a law degree on his own with no help from big brother is a thing worthy of respect. Jimmy changed!! Passing the bar without begging Chuck to prep him and maybe give him an edge (or a way to game the system) is not the Slippin Jimmy that Chuck requires to have the world make sense for him. Chuck starts to suffer from his "CONDITION" and Jimmy becomes his caretaker. This again is something that is worthy of both admiration and respect. To help a shut-in with his every need while maintaining a public defenders job is something beyond the capabilities of Slippin Jimmy. Jimmy can change and grow that is why Chuck hates him (Because CHUCK CAN'T)

Sometimes skills matter more than how hard you work for something, even though of course that should also be appreciated. I don’t know how hard Jimmy worked to get his law degree, but he sure as heck works super hard on his cases.

    *Notes from Better Call Saul Insider Podcast*
    *Episode:* Marco
    *Co-hosts* Kelley Dixon (editor); Chris McCaleb (editor)
    *Guests:* Co-showrunners Vince Gilligan & Peter Gould; Mel Rodriguez (Marco); Arthur Albert (cinematographer); Patrick Fabian (Howard)
    1. Episode written & directed by Peter Gould
    2. Howard, in the scene with Jimmy giving him the list of what he did for chuck, was totally embarrassed, realizing he was so indebted to Chuck that he’d allowed himself to be controlled by him
    3. Looking back in retrospect, we can see Howard had been going out of his way ~not~ to be a dick to jimmy
    4. Arthur had pitched for Howard to be a vampire 😁 he figured he had to either turn out to be a really good guy or ultimate evil
    5. Bob said to Patrick in the first scene they shot together “it feels like we’re saying lines to each other. What’s going through your mind?” And Patrick said “I’m talking to bob odenkirk. He plays Saul Goodman. (Etc)”. So Bob said “ok, let’s forget that. Let’s just talk as people right now” (while other things were happening on set) So they did, and they both relaxed, and the scene was much easier. Vince even said “oh! That was good! More of that!”
    6. Similarly, Bob invited Mel to his house for dinner before they shot together, and they talked through all that outside stuff to get to a real relationship & remove any awkwardness/non-immersive feeling
    7. Mel says it’s hard to come in for a guest spot as everyone on set knows each other & has inside jokes & has a rhythm. Bob inviting him over helped so much. But everyone involved was really welcoming, and even people in the props department gave him a suggestion on how to break the bottle that helped inform his character
    8. Mel had two days to learn a Chicago accent. He watched Bob’s sketches where he did the accent among other things
    9. Marco loves jimmy as much as jimmy loves chuck. Where chuck isn’t giving jimmy what jimmy wants/needs from him, the same is true for jimmy with Marco
    10. Vince was a little nervous people would be upset we still have Jimmy McGill and not Saul by the end of the season. But, over the season, he fell in love with Jimmy McGill so hard that he’s almost afraid of getting to Saul too soon and losing Jimmy

    As always, it is so great to see your reactions. As others have stated, I am surprised at your confusion as to the ending of the episode. While it may not be filled with PHYSICAL action, it is jam-packed with CHARACTER action/development.
    There are 2 characters that are major influences/representations in Jimmy's life: Marco and Chuck
    - Chuck: Represents the legal upstanding side of what Jimmy wants to be. This is basically him being a good lawyer. However, everytime he tries to do things legitimately it gets pulled away from him because of people's expectations (manifested by his brother), and his sense of morality.
    - Marco: Represents the part of his life that he is naturally good at. Schemes and quick money. However, Jimmy knows that there is no future in this life.....because he ultimately meets Marco at the EXACT same place (the bar) he left him. He is dying
    So we have now met the 2 main influences of Jimmy's current worldview. Marco and Chuck.....however neither of them work on their own. Marco is a totem/reminder of Slippin Jimmy, and Chuck is the totem of James Mcgill. Neither by themselves bring Jimmy fulfillment.
    What Jimmy realizes and considers for the 1st time is COMBINING these 2 personas.....and the result is what we know of as Saul Goodman.
    Both Chuck (last episode in anger) and Marco (this episode in admiration) both view Jimmy as a combination Slippin-Jimmy and a lawyer. It is Jimmy who never looks at it that way. That is why Jimmy's conversation to Mike at the Parking Booth is so pivotal. It is the 1st time he has allowed himself to look at the Kettleman mess FULLY as Slippin Jimmy. He references what "stopped him" and we get the sense it is trying to live up to some standard to impress people (mainly Chuck). When he says it will "never stop me again", that is him saying he is not going to live his life dictated by others terms. He is going to forge his own path which is symbolized by him driving down the MIDDLE of the road :)
    So who / what is Saul Goodman......
    Chuck calls him a dangerous person:
    1) "Slippin Jimmy with a law degree, is like a chimp with a machine gun"
    2) "I know you.....I know you who are...people never change....you're Slippin Jimmy
    Marco claims that Jimmy has outdone him because being a lawyer is the greatest con of all. He can run much more complex and monetary plans than what they could as hustlers in Cicero.
    I would highly encourage you to go back and rewatch some of Breaking Bad and watch Saul Goodman.....especially Season 5 when things start breaking down. You can see Jimmy McGill there and the vulnerability introduced in Season 1.
    In conclusion, the character of Jimmy McGill is the most fascinating to me out of the whole BrBad / BCS universe.
    Please keep watching the show as things get alot more interesting with both Jimmy and the world around him.
    Be curious to hear your thoughts

    Jimmy wanted to earn Chucks approval but deep down I’m not sure he really wanted to change, Chuck got him off the hook and as a result he felt compelled to make a change but in his heart he was still Slippin Jimmy and Chuck knew it. After finding out that Chuck sabotaged him Jimmy decides to be a lawyer on his own terms, a criminal lawyer, instead of staying on the straight and narrow because he truly wanted to change. If all it takes is one persons disapproval to make you give up, odds are you weren’t doing it for yourself you were doing it to validate yourself in the eyes of someone else, and that never ends well.

    HHM is a large law firm, they have more than just 3 lawyers. They have associates (entry level lawyers), senior associates (more experienced lawyers), and partners (Chuck is one among several). It doesn’t matter where Jimmy went to law school, unless it was Ivy League Chuck was always going to be biased against it. What matters more than the school is passing the bar, which Jimmy does. Hiring Jimmy to be a lawyer at HHM is not the same as hiring off the street vs promoting from within. Also, being arrested doesn’t mean much if the charges are dropped and if they’re dropped, he would not be registered as a sex offender. Being a lawyer is a job where it doesn’t matter as much if you’ve been to jail, it would only matter if they’ve been disbarred.

    To clarify a bit more on what Jimmy said about knowing what stopped him and it wasn’t stopping him again, He was in referring to his morals and his rules that he had built for himself for years trying to make it as not only an honorable lawyer but also have that approval from his older brother who he obviously took advantage of the opportunity that Chuck gave to him but when that realization hit that Chuck was against him the entire time, Jimmy feels that it was all for nothing and that trust has basically crumbled along with their relationship. Of course Jimmy isn’t by any means walking the line and perfect, this season alone he has had minor hiccups but they haven’t been enough to evolve him into the Saul Goodman we all know- he had that advantage to take all that money and get away with it but his morals and good conscious made him do the right thing. For himself, for his career and of course for the love of his brother. By the end of this season while he is not there to becoming Saul Goodman, he is now starting on that path to become slowly and surely who we know to be Saul Goodman.

    Like someone wrote earlier in comments, the writer's did not know if there was going to be a season 2 so they had to write the season 1 finale to show how Jimmy became Saul Goodman in case only 1 season of Better Call Saul. Then AMC ok'ed more seasons and the writer's expanded Jimmy's story on how he will become Saul Goodman as you know him in Breaking Bad.
    Also, Chuck got him off those charges that would have him registered as a Sex Offender, but Chuck saved him from that. Jimmy tried to made good for Chuck but Chuck broke Jimmy's heart so now Saul Goodman is in the future.

    Jimmy has been spending the past couple of years doing things because it's what he thought Chuck would want him to do. He wasn't being himself, he's been what he thinks Chuck wants him to be. It's lead to some good things like becoming a lawyer, but now he knows that Chuck never really wanted Jimmy to become anything. He just wanted to keep Jimmy out of trouble and would never think anything more of Jimmy no matter what he did. So Jimmy spending time with Marco reminded Jimmy of who he was and seeing Marco die like that made him realize life is too short not to live it on his own terms. That's why he decided to walk away like that at the end. He's thinking about who he was and who he's become and it's making him question who he really is.

If he told Jimmy that he loved him, but didd'nt want to mix family and business, and that Jimmy's criminal past gives him cold feet when it comes to hiring him into his own firm, I think Jimmy would have understood, eventually. Jimmy should not rely on this brother to fix him a job. He's an adult. At the same time, Chuck should be more humble i regards to the fact, that his illness, makes him demendent on Jimmy's support.

    • @ShadeKetchum
      @ShadeKetchum 5 лет назад

      That makes a lot of sense when you think about it. A con man would jump the gun if it meant getting a big payday. And Jimmy/Saul clearly has jumped the gun before with trying to scam Mrs Kettlemen to become her lawyer, even working with Walt without thinking about the dangers of getting involved in a drug business. So jumping the gun is surprisingly accurate to his character.

    • @dog-eared6991
      @dog-eared6991 5 лет назад +3

      *Some spoilers just in case Nikki and Steven are reading*
      Sure, he doesn't become Saul yet, but the implication of this ending is that Jimmy is going to throw away everything that he's accomplished and all of his ethics, potentially going straight into becoming Saul or Saul-like. It's a huge jump that doesn't feel entirely earned. Even the writers have talked about how they went into season 2 not knowing how they could go on with the story because they felt that they were moving him into becoming Saul too fast. That's why they ultimately retconned the final scene and had him go into the meeting when they realized that Jimmy would still be anchored by his relationship with Kim.
      In the context of the rest of the series that follows the final scene works better because we have more of a sense of who Jimmy is and how he makes rash decisions before thinking them through, but just going off of the first season this last moment just felt flat to me at the time. But I do think that they corrected it and turned the show into something even better than it was during the first season.
