Nice job on your demo. Both mics sound good and have different characteristics. The D6 is designed to be placed further inside the drum. This is easily done because of the compact size. This enables the mic to pick up more resonance of the drum, and the mic can either be aimed towards the beater for more attack or away from the beater for a rounder tone depending on individual taste.
yes.
Ahhh, thats why mine worked so well when i buried it into the drum
This is the nicest sounding drumset recording I've ever heard in my entire life.
:-) thanx!!!
DETH KLOWN I probably agree! Nice job boom Shak!
DETH KLOWN Honestly? It's good but you really should hear into the sound from Simon Phillips or Gavin Harrison.
AND PEOPLE STILL BUY DW. THEY LOOK NICE, BUT DON'T SOUND LIKE THIS.
Any drums well tuned and of decent quality sounds great. People buy DW because preferences, just like assholes, every one have an opinion and taste, agree?
this video has helped me make my decision...im going for the shure beta 52! the audix d6 sounds great but I just like the dynamics the shure has in this. Thank you for making this great video
same for me as well
Finally someone who uploaded a REAL Bassdrum Mic Shootout !!! Man you only got 1 video in your channel and it's better than others that got 100's of them. Thank you so much for your video it helped me a lot to decide between the Shure and the Audix. Your setup is SICK and sound so good !!! Pearl and Zildjian what else ?
who made the race?
sinneddigga The Audix made the race lol ... Less BOOM more PUNCH for my taste ... but i'm considering buying the two for different situations but not now don't got the money yet for 2 mics ...
probably the best sounding kit on RUclips.. finally someone who knows how to place mics in the right spots get the levels right etc. more importantly someone who knows how to play and show us what we want to hear
Really like the Audix, better defined low end and also a smoother high end I think.
Finally, a drum mic shootout from someone who knows how to play drums. Thanks for allowing rebound on the beater and not burying into the head:)
thanks bro for ya kind words
Agree 100% with Fsuholley! I can finally hear 'ghost notes' only drummers can hear!!! Unlike most sound engineers choose not to! That 'beater off the head sound' was the breakthrough I was looking for. No one else on youtube has shown how both kick mic's sounded when all the mic's were on. You did & did it masterfully!! Respects!!! My choice is the Shure BETA 52a. There's just a nice smooth warmth to it, especially on my Ludwig 26"x14" Bass Drum. The sound is vinyl like if that makes sense? LOL
thanks, DesignPro2002! In the meantime i got a Ludwig ClassicMaple with a 24x14 kick...today i use Beta 91a inside and a D112 on the outside...the D112 is giving a better pouf-sound on the outside...the Beta 91a make a solid click...check my other videos for the gear!
thanks for making this Boom Shak..i'm not a drummer but do sound for a Hall that requires a nice low, fat bottom sound..both sound good, and many people are telling me to go w/the Audix, but i've been using a Beta 52 for a long time and maybe is just what i'm used to..as you said a little EQ goes a long way..both are great..depends on the sound you like to play with..thanks again..
There are plenty of drummers who bury the beater and blow you away pal. Lots of pros do it. Has nothing to do with "knowing" how to drum its different styles. Use your head.
Great example! I own both of these mics and they are both useful for different reasons. I got the Beta 52 with the Shure drum mic kit. Sounds great for slow to medium tempos. Has more attack than let's say the AKG D112 which is very warm, more like a pulse than a punch. I recorded a punk band's EP with the Beta 52 and just totally hated the kick in the mix. The tempos were way faster than normal projects and it needed more punch! More attack to be specific. The more I tried boosting the attack the more "plastic-ey" it sounded. Surprisingly they asked me to record a second 2 song demo a few months later and I bought a D6 just for it. That totally changed it! It kept up very well with double time. It has a huge mid scoop which helped the guitars.
I love the sound of your kit, is sounds huge and the cymbals do too!
First off let me say thank you for actually posting a quality shootout, it really helps. Secondly i honestly prefer the 52, it has a nice warmer sound to me. Although the d6 would be ideal for metal hands down.
Wow, lot of mics. Sounds awesome. Either mic is great. May prefer the Shure though. Can you easily get the Beta52 inside the 4.25" port hole for an Aquarian Super Kick reso head ? Seems a little bulky. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
today i play an 5" front holier my Bass Drum....there it fits with some space
I click on this because I just bought a Beta52A, but I stayed for the awesome playing. Great video!
I definitely prefer the sound of the 52a within the context of the whole mix, bith sound great, nice sounding kit
Probably the best sounding kit I've ever heard. Great job.
..... update... I just watched the rest of your vids...
ALL your kits sound this good... the amber's are a tad more musical..
Deep with punch....
thank you very much!
15" K Light Hats, 24" K Light Ride, 18" K Dark Th. Crash, 20" A Custom EFX (unfortunately it cracked and is gone now), 20" Oriental Crash of Doom, 18" Oriental China, 10" A Custom Crash....and 14" Oriental China stacked with a 8" A Paperthin Splash as Side-Trash-Hats...
absolutely amazing sound! love the kit, love room, love the mic choice,a d the mixing and the production! Admirable to say the least!
Found your video while searching for Shure vs. Audix reviews, and I have to say that I think I'm sold on Audix. I love my Shure gear, but I've been very impressed with Audix recently. I'm also a Ludwig/Paiste player, and I'm impressed with the Pearl Reference kit and the Zildian K's. Thanks for a great reference video!
yo check out my vid from my new Ludwig Classic Maple...at the moment i use a Beta91a inside and a AKG D112 on the front head...best combination i ever played... (unfortunately not in that video)
Dang this kit sounds good.
I'm sure a lot of credit goes to the drummer but I don't know much about drumming.
I don't think I really prefer one to the other, the Shure sounds more natural so for a lot of things i would pick that but the D6 would sound great for metal or anything heavy. Nice definition and click.
Ya Know: I came to this video to hear a comparison of kick drum mics. BUT I'm totally distracted by the PHATTNESS of your main snare! I don't know what kind of snare it is or the heads you got on it, but THAT THING IS TALKIN'!!!!!!
3 mics on It !
By the way your drums are the best sounding drums i ever heard. That 12 on top sounds amazing. I cant imagine a 12 sounding any better than that. Awesome!!!
I think that the AUDIX sounds nicer solo'd although positioning has a part to play here aswell, BUT more importantly, it is how it sounds in the mix not on it's own and for me the BETA 52 sounds much better with more punch when it's heard with all of the other mics too.
Yeah man. You have a good sounding kit to which is the most important part before putting up mics in the first place. Also I'm tired of mic shootouts with no processing on them. I wanna hear what the mic can do under studio quality sounds with processing. Good video. I like the Beta 52 better only because it sounds more natural of the bat where the d6 is more clicky. Both good mics though.
Is it odd that I just watched your video now for fun just for listening lol... Your drums sound so good! I just love the tone you get! Can you please do an in-depth video on how you get such a fat snare sound and overall kit sound? I would absolutely love that!
@kylewardmusic thanks for your kind words!!! :-) I would love to make an in-depth vid...but i sold the pearl kit for a ludwig classic maple...check out my stream...i did a quick and dirty recording with that kit...
I would have never sold that PEARL KIT. It sounds so sweet.
Whata lovely drum kit sound! especially that snare, the sound is "so me" Well done
thanks!
I love this ride cymbal of yours, but DAYAM it looks like a flyer saucer! HUGE!
Dude you have got to post more stuff.. I agree.. This is the best sounding kit I believe I've ever heard
i´ll think about it...thanx for your compliment!!!
I'd like to see what recording software you use, all your
Tom mics, Cymbals, heads.. Everything bro.. I dig your whole kit man
Nicholas Bohannan Mic´s in the info-box...cymbals are 15" K Light Hats, 18" K Crash Thin, 20" A Custom EFX Crash, 24" Light Ride & two Crash of Doom (PlayersView left to right...)...cheers! ;-)
Really appreciate
It man.. Keep up the good work.. I got more out of your video than i have out of all the other 100s of videos I've watched lol
Damn, I'm jealous of your kit. It sounds incredible!
Thanks for the video. I stumbled upon Audix mics on a monitor mix gig a while ago, and they were nice to work with compared to Shure sm/beta/whatevers, soundwise and GBF-wise too. Didn't really have feedback problems although the stage was very small and the bands unnecessarily loud. Can't wait to do FOH with them some day. They have a proper fat but clean sound to them, which I totally like.
Its funny, the first time I listen I just focused on Bassdrum mic, and I favored the D6. Second time I listen to the hole set and must say for me the Beta 52a fits more to the complete drumset.
I have a beta 52a also but listening to this. The D6 giving a better sound as a whole kit right off back. Without even touching the eq. But that’s for this bass drum.
Audix d6 all the way, been using it for years and would recommend it to any sound engineer or artist
Greatest shootout ever. Great sound, the audix is more tr909 sound and it's good for modern Music, but i'm gonna buy the beta 52a because it would be my only kick mic and must be versatile
AMAZING shootout! Just what I needed. 2 good mics placed the right way on a QUALITY kit. Thanks!!! :)
Nice sounds and excellent playing. I would love to se your take on mixing drums. Overheads, placing mics, roommics etc. Cheers froms sweden
That pearl kit sounds so damn fantastic in that room...
Anyway. I prefer a d6 to the 52, but i find both of them have to agresive curves.
Something like an RE20 is too flat for a kickdrum for my taste.
However, i have found the sennheiser E602 II to be the right thing for what i want from a kickdrum mic.
It has a pre-eq curve that we usually want for modern kickdrum sounds. But it's not overdone. It's just right.
And since it doesn't have a huge 5k spike like the 52, the beater sounds pronounced, but more natural.
The 52 always seems to be making the beater way to clicky for my taste. It would only be good to me if i was mixing a black metal band with a bunch of blastbeats.
Congratulations to the recording.
The mics are different but both are very well.
What is the recording chain? (Preamps, ad converter, comps).
What overheads and room mic did you use?
Regards
Wow, they are so drastically different. I like the Beta cause it's so low and fat, and that's what I own :) ... BUT the D6 has more definition and clarity on the mid/higher frequencies. I also think you're positioning closer to the middle helps a tad with that too. I am about to record a band and I think I am just gonna use both.
PS I wish the floor tom was louder. :D
also check out another vid i made for B52a & B91a in combination....my fav. at the moment: Shure Beta 52a & Shure Beta 91a Kick Drum Mic Test
Great comparison, great mixing, and beautiful kit man! Thanks a lot for this video!
A tiny question: Are you using the same mics for the rack toms as the floor toms? If so, do they pick up the low ends in the floor toms good in your opinion? I'm shopping for my first set of drum mics and I'm curious as to what the best solution is. If the Beyer work for the floor toms aswell, I might jsut go with that. If not, what recommendations do you have?
Cheers!
i use Sennheiser e604 right now...better for toms in my ears....similar sound to MD421 but easier to use on toms...
I think I like the Shure Beta 52a better, it seems to tighten the low end. It even makes the whole mix sound better. It's not by a huge amount. Great video though! Might have swayed my purchasing opinion
Dude... those drums sound awesome. You know what you're doing
thanks bro!
dude I'm in love with your snare sound, could you specify a little bit more about that ? cheers!
Yes of course... Top Emperor X Dot, Bottom Ambassador Reso, Bottom cracked up very tight, tune Top to your desired sound...thats all :-)
boom shak thanks man, good job with your drum sound! another question, are you using room mics on the fullsound of your snare as well? Ive heard some ambience as well in the overall picture of the snare, or is that coming from the overheads?
yeah, it should been the OH...i think i did not use room mic in this vid.
Great shoot-out! And nice drumming! I'll have a demo of a part of the Audix range soon on my channel too.
Damn those Zildjians sound incredible. What are your hi hats and main crash?
should be a 15" K Light HiHat and a 19" K Dark Thin Crash.
Whole kit sounds great. Really great. I came away with the opinion that the Beta 52 is just the sound I like. .The D6 is a good mic, but the beta 52 just sounds perfect to me.
I really have a problem because both mics has great character. I want to buy one of them but first i have to decide wich one. I really love both.
The kit has a very big room sound. What else did you do to accomplish this? Room mics in addition to the overheads? Reverb on snare? This does not sound like just OH and drum mics. Fantastics sound though!
i think it´s just the Overhead Mic´s! Think i mixed it more from their point of view...just adding a little the direct mics.
No reverb, no room mice in this case...!
any thoughts on that mic stand holding the 52a, is it worth buying and where could i get one? and thanks for the great shootout, my vote goes to 52a! :) you have some amazing sounding drums!
it´s just a table stand from König&Meyer with a gooseneck on it....on the bottom of the stand i placed two weights from a barbell to make it stable.
D6 sounds better to me, especially on the low end of things, phatter. But then again, I've used the Audix D6 since 2009, so I might be biased. the Beta 52 is a quality mic and sounds great.
Wow, this kit sounds amazing! Did you use any compression/EQ on it (besides the sections where you specify that you did)?
Audix D6 for the win ! What are your tom mics ? they sound good as well....
I was searching for this question. I see he hasn't answered.
Audix 6..for me, By the way..Fantastic kit and cymbals...can I ask you what heads on all the drums ..cheers
see specs in the txt to vid...;-)
oh yes, stupid me..cheers
If I had to use one word to describe the sound of your kit it would be "chunky". I like it
best kit ive heard i play ludwig but these sound awsome
Thank you! check out my Ludwig Video :-) i play Ludwig too!
Prefer the Beta 52, but I do hear that the Audix D6 is good for toms, especially on floor toms.
woah the kit sounds great in that room!
Finally some bassdrum mic test with a REAL SOUND BASSDRUM!! thank you so so so much, that reference pure is exquisite. Could you do a comparison between the beta 52a, akg D112 and D12vr?
Of course, could you send me an D12VR please? :-) This mic is unfortunately not im my collection...LOL
Great video man :D nice setup, nice sound. Both are great mics
Thank for this awesome video! They look and sound amazing!
Please! Do a video on that snare tuning it is wonderful
thanks bro! The Tuning is nothing special...just trained ears :-) Crank you bottom high and find the sweet spot on Top, bring Snare in tune, that´s all the magic i did! Cheers
This drum sound blows me away. Are you using a room mic? The kick sound so real. But also like it would cut through the mix. Any tips on tuning/muffling?
This is done so thoroughly well. Thank you!
veryyy impressive :) but i think it would have been a good idea to have done them both individually because i see they are angled in opposite directions which we all know has an impact on the sound. if you can do another video with them getting the same angle that would be awesome:)
? different angle? no they are not! both aimed between beater & edge...the minimal space difference between left & right in the hole does not effect the sound...believe me!
Your kit sounds awesome and your room too. Which snare wires do you use on both snares?
Thanks! It´s a PureSound Custom 1320 on Main, and the standard Pearl 12" Wires on the side snare.
Hey @boom_shak, I never been fancy about coated heads on my drums, but It has been many years since I tried them out and I didnt put them on a high-end kit either. Got a DW Collector's Series kit now and I have been trying out 3 different clear heads, but im willing to try out coated now! What heads are you using on this kit? What sizes are those? Great video btw!
+Martin Vega
Hey Martin, see list of configuration in text below video....and thanks for your kind words. cheers
+boom shak well...someone gotta be blind :D
Nice! The kit sounds great. How do u like em compared to other high end kits? Do they tune up easy or make u work for that great sound?
one of the best kits i have ever played and heard!
tuning is very easy in my eyes...but i have a bit of experience with that!
screws run very smooth, every little turn gives you an accurate change... and you get a ton of tone out of that piece of wood! had the "normal" reference before, also nice, but the pure is...what should i say...its pure pleasure! ;-)
Awesome... Thanks for the feedback. I'm highly considering this for my next kit. I'm glad u told me about that cause I was unsure whether to go with the regular or pure reference. I know the pure has thinner shells. Is the pure more versatile or the regular?
Larry Tate in my ears: defiantly the PURE...the Regular Reference ist very punchy, very projecting, it also sound amazing, but the PURE is kind of little more versatile, finer in tuning and tone, sounds lovely played quite, also nice in a higher tuning, but tuned down also loud and projective as hell...do not talk to my bandmates...they say i am loud on that kit :-)
Nice! Yea from the videos I've seen I like the pure a lil better too. I'll go with that when I get a few more bucks together. Thanks.
What do u think is the easiest recording program for someone just getting into it?
I found the Shure mic a bit fatter and the Audix has a little more attack but might have something to do with mic placement as the Audix was closer to the beater ?
Hola amigo como estas??? wauuu que buen sonido que lograste con tu bateria... quisiera saber con que interfaz de audio y que modelos de parches utilizaste cuando la grabaste??? Yo tengo una Pearl Tarjet series :)
juan ignacio Bosco english pleeeeease! ;-)
That main snare is bae.
Great video! What processing (Eq and Comp) did you use on the Kicks?
+Paul Quinn oh, i could not remember this, i am sorry...but normally i do nothing special...little comp, little eq...that´s all!
+boom shak It sounded great!
I just got the D6 and I'm working with it.What dampening on your kick?
uh, it is long ago...but i think i used kind of pillow touching both heads in this video
Great sound! What is the K hihat and the K crash on your left you are using?! Thanks a lot
Thank you :-) They are 15" K Lights Hats, and a 18" Dark Thin Crash...
@Josh: only muffle i use on BD is a small kind of bass drum pillow 18"x16". I am not using room mice in this vid. Tuning? Just by ear that it sounds great in the room.
Very Impressed with this production! Sound of Drums is Excellent! Can't see your face. Is that by design?
+Billy Barton yes it is...i like it simple...it´s about the pics, the kit, not about my beauty :-)
Neither are my videos. See below.
It almost sounds like (when they are soloed) they are clipping?
That kit sounds awesome. I play a set of Pearl Masters MXC and your kit gives my kit a run for their money.
Hello mate. Can you tell me what muffling you are using. I have a pearl masters kit 6 ply maple and i have all three mics you use Beta 52, beta 91a, audix d6 and i installed a sledgepad on the inside. Im currently using the evans emad system front (coated) and back and i still cant quite get the sound i really want. Im really close. I haven’t actually received my 91a yet...probably tuesday. The sledgepad really kills both heads and give a hard warm thud versus a boom...no boom at all. Im thinking the 91a inside on the sledgepad with a beta 52 on a kickport might do it. What are your favorites?
Steve
+dcaudio1 I don´t know the sledgepad...but google shows some foam made tools for it... i never use foam...it kills everything, just a normal pillow or a small muffle pad like from evans....mine is a rockbag from thomann.de, not very expensive, sometimes a combine it with a very small pillow underneath...i believe in breathing muffling in an Bassdrum :-) cheers
what mics are you using on snare and toms? sounds great!
+Shane Heath, thanx, see all details in txt below vid ;-) SD: SM57 Toms: Beyerdynamic Opus 88 ...cheers
if you had a sub kick the beta 52 will win bc it can handle higher end frequencies ?
I'd have to go with the Shure on this one.
Excellent sounding kit!
What are the mics on tom & floor tom? Sound is very huge. Love it. 😍
it was a Beyerdynamic Opus 88 Condenser...thing today they are named TG D58c.
What snare/head combo are you using? It's sounds amazing
it´s an REMO Emperor X Coated Dot on Top and Ambassador Reso on Bottom. SD is an Pearl Reference Pure 13x6,5"
2:20 could be a Death Grips song.
Hey did you have anything inside your bass drum? Any packing blankets or padding?
Yupp, it´s a pillow...rockbag bassdrum pillow.
What mic's you got on the toms?
The audix makes me want to eq the snare to match the kick. the beta makes me want to leave the snare alone. I like the beta
20WT was thinking the same thing. the beta seems to capture better bleed although this bleed is to be edited out unless you are live. so beta prob slays live? or maybe it's too hot and meant more for wider range of wood instruments in studio. i'm not sure but i do agree that the bleed capture is incredible
killer sounds my brother!!!
What model cymbals are they?
They both sound good , but you should have each mike separately centered in the port hole for a better sound. The mikes are too close to th rim of the hole.
+71dhwand please explain that to me? normally the position to the edge of the hole ist not that much a difference!
The Shure is fatter, warmer sounding. I use Audix mics for toms and snare, but the Beta 52A kills on the kick.
Like the Beta, which Pearl Kit is it?
it's Pearl Reference Pure, I own one kit too, awesome drums!
They all sound the same to me. Maybe I should wait till I get home and listen through my monitors instead of iPhone speaker :)
jepp for shure ;-)
Hey boom shack, mind sharing what you did for the EQ?
Hey Jooosh, i did nothing special at EQ...both mic are so much pre-tailored that you only have do dial in some more low and boost some highs around 5-8k, the D6 is the "ready to go" mic, the B52 needs a little more correction depending on BasssDrum
D6 all the way love the sound
did you use a mic out in front of the kick?
NO! obviously i did not! ;-)
Its only an A-B Test between those two models!
ok because i was wondering if there were room mics placed in front of the kick. Because it kind of sounds like it. Were you using any overheads?
Jacob Buxton yes, as you can see the mic specs in the info box of the vid. OH were AT 3525 Large Condensers
ok thankyou
what type of mixer do you use to calibrate mics?
see info of video: Recorded via Logic X trough a PhonicHelix24 Board
today i use an Bergiger x32 Compact as Interface, mix in Logic
Rad drumming!
Which mic do you think pairs better with a Shure Beta 91A?
Jobe Lewis check out my other vids, there is a B52/B91A vid! At the moment i use a D112/B91A combo on a Ludwig Classic Maple Kit! This is also captured in another vid!
boom shak will do man! Thanks!
