Perfect sailing song. I can recall hearing it when me and my buddies and our wives and girlfriends used to sail on Friday afternoons. Great times. Nothing like a sunset on the Chesapeake Bay. And sailing under the Key Bridge in 2001 long before it fell.
heard them for the first time while sitting on a boat in the middle of Harvey's Lake PA while they played at Hanson's Park a long long time ago...changed me as a person, for the better I hope....Made me happy to be alive
My first time in Australia, I was in Surfer's Paradise and looked up at the night sky down on the beach, and there it was! The Southern Cross. You can't miss it. Fantastic memory.
Jealous! I’m planning a duo passage that way soon. Wanna see it, but also all the wonder on the way. Thank you for your service, and hope you’re well! ❤
Crosby, Stills, and Nash were a Supergroup when they first got together in 1968: David Crosby from The Byrds, Stephen Stills from Buffalo Springfield, and Graham Nash from The Hollies. And the first time they sang together those locked-in harmonies were there. That's when they knew they were a band. And sometimes they added Neil Young to the mix.
What makes their harmonies sound fuller and different than most bands is they don't sing in the standard 3 part harmony. While Nash sang the high note and Stills the low note. Crosby would sing anywhere from the 3rd to 6th and often switch back and forth. I met David Cosby, sat down in a Cafe in Santa Cruz. Table next to me was David Crosby. I waited for him to finish eating and when he paid the check I said the "Just wanted to say thank for all the amazing music you gave to the world" while he is known to hate talking to fans or pretty much anyone. He thanked me, I told him I played guitar, and Southern Cross was one of my first songs I learned (it's wasn't) he sat at my table and talked about 10 min about music. Including his harmonies. This is why I know the above trying to find the weirdest ones.
1st, thanks for reacting........just beautiful, isn't it....... an ageless breakup story and those glorious C-S-N harmonies, rarely equaled today......R.I.P., David.......
Stephen Stills sailed around the world, apparently to try to get over gis lost love ... Judy Collins. Most of the lyrics are talking about that sailboat and journey to find redemption. ❤❤❤
"Southern Cross" was based on a song called "Seven League Boots" by Rick and Michael Curtis. Stephen Stills re-wrote it to tighten it up, and added his own lyrics. It's about a boat trip he took after his divorce. He said, "It's about using the power of the universe to heal your wounds." The boat was called the "Southern Cross," though that's also the name of a constellation that's visible mainly in the southern hemisphere. So many good songs by CSN & sometimes Y. Some you haven't reacted to: Just a Song Before I Go Teach Your Children Ohio Our House Woodstock Marrakesh Express Wooden Ships Helplessly Hoping Helpless
The first part of the song is full of nautical terminology: "She was makin' for the Trades on the outside" (that's the Trade Winds); "downhill run to Papeete" (Tahiti); "Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas", etc. The noisy bar in Avalon: that's a town on Santa Catalina Island, in the Pacific due west of L.A. There's a fun song called 26 Miles (Santa Catalina) by the Four Preps I recommend. I think the significance of the Southern Cross is that it's a constellation that's only visible from south of the equator, telling us just how far the singer has sailed away from the woman he loved.
You can see the southern cross north of the the equator, too. I've seen it from Costa Rica. It's just lower on the horizon there. It can be seen from Hawaii at times too, I've been told
“I have my ship and all her flags are flyin, she’s all that I have left and music is her name.” Those words are some of my favorite lyrics because sometimes when I feel hopeless in a way. Music is the only thing that can help me. Great reaction cutie ❤
I think they were singing about a real boat they named southern cross, which also is a constellation. Sailing and the stars are inexplicably connected due to knowing which direction you are heading. Of course that was before compasses were invented. Compasses can fail but the stars are fixed. They took the song from there to a lost love.
Stephen Stills on lead vocal. Of course, the harmonies win the day! He was going through a love thing at the time. I can't recall the full story, but it's on the internet. The Southern Cross is a bright star in the night sky for sailing ship navigation.
"Truth you may be running from is so small" is most likely referencing the fact that they no longer love each other. "as big as the promise of a coming day" refers to the new beginning that awaits if you confront the truth and allow yourself to move on and be happy.
You should check out The Band. Songs such as The Weight, Up On Cripple Creek, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Acadian Driftwood, especially if you dig beautiful harmonies.
I think he's referring to the problems that in the immensity of sky and ocean are very small, but in fleeing them and not knowing how they are affecting those you've left behind, that mystery makes them monstrous. On the ocean you have time to think and your thoughts can exaggerate problems, particularly the ones you haven't confronted.

The Southern Cross is a constellation you see in the Southern hemisphere that guides the sailor like the big dipper and the North Star does in the Northern hemisphere .

The Southern cross is a constellation only visible in the southern hemisphere -- like the North Star Polaris is only visible in the northern hemisphere. I probably never will see the Southern Cross as I am stuck in Texas.
If you make a trip to the Virgin Islands (I recommend the British side, although travel to the US side does not require a passport) or other locations near the equator at the right time of year, the Southern Cross will make brief appearances over the southern horizon. It is breathtaking.
you actually can see from the northern hemisphere, if you are close enough to the equator. I lived in Palau, island chain 7 degrees north, and you could see it from there. First time I saw it, we were on a friends sailboat for a sunset cruise. He didnt tell me we could see it, and knew I never had. But then he played this song, and pointed it out to me.
ABBA were recognised as the band that started music videos and I believe MTV grew from that. Their choreography was ahead of its time. I was born in 63 so I definitely grew up with ABBA. Any of their music videos of their hits are amazing but check out Fernando. This hit at the time spent the longest time at No 1 in Australia. There was outrage and the ABC copped so many complaints they had to apologise and play it the following week when it was still No 1.
If you like the harmonies, I would recommend two other songs by these guys, one very stripped down acoustic song called "Helplessly Hoping" (1969), and the other one more of a rocker, with the addition of Neil Young, called "Carry On" (1970) 👍😎 And of course, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (1969)...
He is running from his breakup with Judy Collins, she left him. By the way the boats name is, "Music", and he talks about how the boat is the only thing he had left after the divorce, in another song.
This song was released late in their career and one of my favorites. I have always loved their music since they first formed. I also loved the music from the bands they came from prior to CSN&Y. These guy's produced a lot of music.
Southern Cross is an amazing song but Carry On is a masterpiece! The harmonies in this version of the song are fabulous but didn’t include Crosby because he was separated from the group when they recorded this. So it’s mostly Stills singing with of course Nash’s gorgeous higher tones filling in. And yes this song is all about Still’s navigating through his life after his relationship with Judy Collins ended.

Interesting. You're quite right about the advertising imagery, and it's kind of sad, too, that a great song like this makes you think of a Levi's ad. Or any ad, for that matter. I shudder to think how many ads you've already been exposed to in your young life.
It was a break up. He's tried hard to keep her , but she kept leaving. So out of grief he took on a sailing trip, deep into the ocean. Where it occurred to him that human beings are frail and make mistakes. And if we just accept and forgive , and stay with our principles, things will be ok.

Stills is one of the greatest songwriter/performers this nation has ever produced. In a group that sprang from an impromptu meeting at a party.
I think of crossing the equator under sail to the southern hemisphere and watching a brilliant nighttime sky free from light pollution.
