- What’s happening in this movie clip?
Marty (Michael J. Fox) is expecting George McFly (Crispin Glover) to come and get Lorraine Baines (Lea Thompson) from him in the car. However, he gets surprised by Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson) and his gang instead, that take him and lock him in the trunk of a car. Without knowing that it’s now Biff (Thomas F. Wilson) who is on top of Lorraine (Lea Thompson), George McFly (Crispin Glover) bravely confronts Biff and punches him in the face.

Fun fact in between takes when Tom and Lea were in the car Tom actually leaned to her side and apologized by saying “im so sorry Lea” and Lea responded with “its ok Tom its just acting”

Biff actor in general is amazing in real life. Completely opposite to his character. Very polite and caring for others.

The best part of this scene is not when George punches Biff, it's right before that when Biff gives him a chance to walk away without getting hurt. George, for the first time in his life, decides that protecting Lorraine is worth getting hurt for. He's scared of Biff but he decides to stand his ground anyways. THAT, my friends, is the mark of true courage. Not an absence of fear, but the resolve to stand in that fear and make the one decision that has to be made -- the right one.

I agree, that's where the real turning point for George begins, when Biff tells him to turn a blind eye and leave. But instead, he tells Biff no for the first time since they've known each other. He knows that he'll likely get beaten up, Biff had been bullying him for years already, but seeing how scared Lorraine was made him push past his own fear and stand up for her. The punch was the moment that put an end to the bullying.
I disagree. The punch is what sealed it. It is the defacto moment. Actions speak.

1:58 Anyone else get emotional when George decides to stand up to Biff? That was probably the bravest moment of his life.
He was scared shitless because Biff is a lot bigger than him and has been bullying him for years, but when he saw how scared Lorraine was, it gave him the strength to push past his own fear and stand up to Biff.

Yup same here. He told Biff “no” not with the confidence of someone who knew he’d win in a fight, but rather someone who knew they were doing the right thing.
For the first time in his life, George didn’t care that Biff would beat him up. All he knew was that he was this girl’s last hope and he rose to the occasion. Just a beautifully written story with completely developed characters.
@@Dustyplastic73 I think this might be by other reason. Biff always bullying him with his friends so usual his power comes not from him alone but a group of people against single person. For the first time now i was able to recognize a small portion of fear in Tom acting of Biff. Biff speaks commands to George but he was not listening. After few words and sign of fear in the eyes of Bill George was confident enough to stand up to him.

Crispin Glover’s acting is amazing here. Looking at his hand in disbelief, shaking and breathing heavily. One of the most genuine “holy shit, did I just do that!?” moments in the history of acting, in my opinion. One of the best scenes in the film for sure.
Agree. George's transition from being in shock directly following his punch to regaining control and expressing concern for Lorraine was realistic and masterfully acted by Crispin.
And that was A HELL of a punch.

That was Marty's plan actually "punch in the stomach". George was naive and believed that was part of the plan, or he was in disbelief and knew something gone wrong but still followed Marty's plan

Arguably the most satisfying punch in movie history.
The punch isn't even the starting point for George in terms of finding courage and confidence. That came when he said no to Biff for the first time in his life.
George of course snapped and laid Biff out when he pushed Lorraine to the ground and laughed at her. That's when George's mind said, "all right asshole, I've had it. I'm so done with your shit."

"Are you okay?" always makes me tear up. It is such a romantic part of this scene..
George probably considered walking away the second he saw Biff and while he was still scared, looking at the Lorraine and how scared she was made him think otherwise. Brings back what she said in that alternate 1985 of Biff not being half the man George was cuz any real man would have the instinct to protect a woman no matter how scared they are.
Amazing transformation of George's face and voice from 1:56 to 1:59. First shocked and confused, almost about to back off because Biff told him so, then a totally life changing decision in 1:59. Freeze the movie and watch for yourself, how George finally shows his true qualities and overcomes his fear. But that was just the first step. He bravely punches Biff who just laughs at him, then comes the final humiliation when Biff seems to control BOTH George and Lorraine, but that final punch is not just for her, but for all years of harassment. I also love how Lorraines face changes from shock and disbelief, a "who are you?" in 3:26 to recognition in 3:28: you are my prince!
In the original timeline Biff really does rape Lorraine. That's why she's so depressed at the start of the movie and George has a shitty job. It's also why George+Lorraine mysteriously have a far better life when Marty goes 'back to the future'.
Amen to that. If it was my future mother or wife, either Biff or both of us would not leave that scene alive. Either he goes to the upper room alone or I'm taking him with me

I love Crispins acting right after he knocks out biff. his breathing and face expressions say so much about how hes feeling in that moment. Amazing acting
I remember reading that someone high up responsible for this movie, said they knew the quality level of work they would be getting from Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. But what really surprised them was the work from the other three main actors. Especially the fact that all of them really put in the effort and didn't phone in a single moment. For me, one of the big reasons for the success of the film. And the chemistry between Leah and Crispin was pitch-perfect.
Interesting thing is: There was no chemistry between Leah and Crispin... until this moment in the film. It all just happens almost instantly and naturally during this scene. You don't question it. You just know he had a crush on her for a while. You just know what she sees in him after decking Biff. A perfect moment.
I kinda like that George finds the courage to punch Biff in the face after he sees Loraine standing up for him. Makes her feel like a bit less of a damsel in terms of the story structure.
This! It really helps develop their relationship into real love and equal appreciation for each other and it stays like that even 30 years later.

The way he only fights back when she is getting hurt, that's true love. George Mcfly's arc in this movie is one of the best ever
such a well written scene, ultimately Marty while setting up the situation for George to play the hero, ended up not doing anything despite being the main character of the movie, in the end George discovered his own courage and self confidence and it was motivated out of love...can't make them like they used to

@@dakedakinson64 which has NOTHING to do with what I just said...which is Marty set up the situation and while it didn't go as planned, it allowed George to step up and face his tormentor and stand up to him...I mean of COURSE Marty's plan in hindsight was a fail scenario, remember Marty ONLY had what he knew of his mother in his old timeline to go on and assumed she was a good girl prude who would never "Sit" with a boy...which I guess GOES to show how well written this movie is because old timeline present Lorraine berated girls for sitting with boys so Marty assumed she must have been like that in the past...which is the joke

Not only is Back to the Future my favorite 80's Movie, it is my favorite movie of all time. There was a time when I was 10 when I knew all the lines by heart.
I watched this movie like 50 times, and when I was about 13 I spent a whole road trip torturing my parents with the whole movie lines by heart!
It is the perfect movie and I love that it can be explained with just one simple line: “Teen accidentally goes back in time and stops his parents from meeting”. Then expands around this simple line. Brilliant.
pls never reboot/remake this movie!
She didn't fall in love by compassion as in the original time line, she did by admiration.

Lea Thompson’s acting is incredible here. Just look at the emotion she is conveying with her eyes. It’s like she is seeing George for the first time.

I remember watching that punch scene in the movie theaters. The whole audience cheered and applauded , that was an amazing moment.
I love the part where George, after seeing Lorraine brutally pushed to the ground, finally gets the guts to punch the shit out of Biff! Years and years of being bullied built up into one punch! The fact that not only did he stand up for himself, but he also stood up for Lorraine! You go, George!
"I think you got the wrong car McFly." What happened next was what courage is all about. Knowing you're unlikely to win, knowing defeat will be painful, but doing it anyway.
George is such a legend in this scene. What a guy.
This trilogy was full of so many little details and connections. I love it so much.
It's so heartwarming the way how George finally stands up to Biff when he first refuses to walk away, and we can see he's still very scared, knowing that Biff could easily beat him to a pulp, but he's found the courage to want to protect Lorraine, and after he finally strikes Biff unconscious, there's that moment of shellshock and disbelief. He couldn't believe that he not only stood up to Biff, but was able to knock him unconscious like that. So beautiful once he calms down and asks Lorraine if she's alright. He's taken his first steps to being a more confident person who can believe in himself, just as Marty said... :)

This movie is my favorite all time movie, but I had not watched it in years. I checked it out from the library a few months ago and watched it again. This is a great scene, all right. George finally acquires a backbone instead of allowing people to push him around. What a contrast to George in the first part of the movie!
In real life I bet Tom Wilson is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. I just love this trilogy and how good and actors are.
Didn’t realize how dark this scene was until my 20s; Biff was sexually assaulting Lorraine. Though actual rape didn’t happen, he was kissing and touching her without her consent. She wasn’t under the influence thank goodness so she was able to try and fight back but yeah.

When he saw George close his fist and the expression on his face, Biff had went into a state of shock and disbelief that his constant target had finally reached a breaking point and was completely done with his crap. That is what gave George the opening he needed to land that left hook and lay Biff out.

The way Crispin Glover is smiling and having a personal core moment after decking Biff and then looking at Lorraine and remembering this is a traumatic moment for her too, the way his face changes, that deserves an award. Incredible.

I love how Biff starts out as a dumb, comedic bully with funny lines, but gradually becomes scarier as the first film goes on. The minute he rapes Lorraine, any of the funny traits he showed beforehand are completely gone and he's taken DEAD seriously. It just goes to show that even dumb, buffonish jerks can be capable of being genuinely dangerous.
I love how George was so embarrassed at first because he thought he had just interrupted Biff and Lorraine having sex, and how embarrassing would that be? But as soon as he realized what was really going on, his voice was absolutely shaking, not just because he was terrified for his safety, but also because he was horrified at the reality of the situation.

His name is Otis
Apparently, the role of Marty was originally played by a Eric Stolz, a method actor who insisted that people only refer to him as the name of the character he played. The only time he didn't want to be referred to as "Marty" was when he was flirting with Lea Thompson (Loraine).
Thomas Wilson (Biff) hated Stolz because Stolz would often get very aggressive during scenes where Marty and Biff got into confrontations, in fact, Wilson ended up with bruising and almost broke his collarbone during fight scenes with Stolz. Even though Wilson is nothing like the character he plays, he still wanted to get revenge on Stolz and was planning to punch him in the gut during the scene where Biff drags Marty out of the car, however, Stolz was fired before he got the chance. The role of Marty was then given to Michael J Fox, which meant they had to reshoot scenes all over again.
Imagine the alternate timeline where we got the Eric Stoltz version of Back to the Future.
