They seem unrelated, but Tony really wants to let go of the old world macho bullshit where Vito has to be "put down" for being gay and tell all these guys to fuck off because he makes Tony money. But he just can't let go of it. (Represented by the briefcase he can't take in the house.) They even threw in a reference to Tony's father, the sole reason he's tied to this life.
