But there were dark parts of even the most iconic earlier ones shown in this video (though I don't remember enough of cardcaptor and sailor to actually point out anything specific). Nanoha and her friends might have still had plot armor (so not that much death), but they still encountered tragedies, and side characters lacked it. And the spinoff were literally about bully-victim with superhuman strength snapping and crushing skulls in school.
[Spoilers for sailor moon] I think this video is pretty accurate to how brutal these new magical girl shows can get, but there were some parts of original magical girl shows, specifically sailor moon, that were pretty dark. In act 1 of sailor moon near the end, all of sailor moons friends die brutally, one by one, and she just has to watch them. Even her lover is dead and she has barely any hope. In the manga you also learn that before she was reborn on earth, princess serenity killed herself 😬 I could keep going but sailor moon is a lot deeper than a cutesy magical girl show. The reason that it's different from these shows is that it takes an optimistic approach instead of being straight up torture corn.
I checked the end of sailor Moon and I found that even if all magical girl except sailor Moon died, they all resurrected, so it isn't this dark, but for a "kids show" it's weird that there are deaths...
Madoka and studio shaft on general got inspiration from revolutionary girl utena and ikuhara + yuasa style + a liitle of german expressionism and a Tarantino dialogs
theres actually a really neat video comparing magical girl site and madoka magica, and it basically talks about how the two animes handled dark subject matters, and how madoka magica seemed to handle it much more effectively. ill link the video if i can find it again
Actually magical girl anime now are way girlier than before lol, idk what you're talking about. yes they are definitely darker than before, but also girlier, which is why I prefer the old kinds oof, most of them really aren't as girly as the modern kinds
I think the evolution is kind of skewed like sailor moon it set the trend for magical girl teams and then madoka magica set it for dark but madoka magica was just supposed to be a one off but because of its popularity everyone else tried to copy it
The reason madoka worked so well is that magical girls represent hope, purity, and that child like innocence. They say that a light shine brightest in the dark. Madoka is still that hopeful, innocent girl who wish the best in a not so good world. The other "dark" magical girls are just depressing and there is no hope.
Sailor Moon was dark, especially the manga lol. And there was another anime from the 2000s that was almost same thing of Madoka but with a lower budget. Madoka isn't anything original, it just had good animation. And almost all characters sucked tbh

In all honesty, the Sailor Moon manga was actually pretty brutal and violent at times. The Sailor Moon series in general featured Magical Gril vs Magical Girl (they literally wanted to kill each other sometimes (and a few succeeded)), yandere characters (even Sailor Neptune was a yandere character (stalker + willing to destroy the world if it saves Sailor Uranus' life) in the 90s anime), gay characters, cross-dressing characters, suicide, psychological horror (SuperS manga), nsfw moments between Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask (manga only (censored from Sailor Moon Crystal)), etc. Another fun fact is that Sailor Senshi (what the magical girls from Sailor Moon are called) possess Sailor Crystals and they function the same way Soul Gems from Madoka Magica worked. Apparently, a Sailor Senshi's body can even be restored, as long as, their Sailor Crystals remain. This is also what allows Sailor Senshi to constantly reincarnate and if someone has a powerful enough healing power (*cough*Sailor Moon*cough*), they can even restore their previous bodies. So Sailor Moon beat Madoka Magica to it on that concept too.
Pretty Precure isn't completely rainbow and sunshine either. In one of their episodes, Cure March's siblings were attacked by Majorina as she tried to hit them with a giant orb of energy. Luckily they survive, however they made it seem that they died until the very last moment. In the Glitter Force dub you could here their voices so you already knew they were alive.
Back then, whenever a magical girl transformed, their weapon would appear in their hand. Nowadays, whenever a magical girl transforms, their weapon can appear between their legs.

Dammit thanks to you now all my juice is on the floor
Correct
Lol
[Spoilers for sailor moon]
I think this video is pretty accurate to how brutal these new magical girl shows can get, but there were some parts of original magical girl shows, specifically sailor moon, that were pretty dark.
Wtf, even sailor Moon is dark ?!
I checked the end of sailor Moon and I found that even if all magical girl except sailor Moon died, they all resurrected, so it isn't this dark, but for a "kids show" it's weird that there are deaths...

The reason madoka worked so well is that magical girls represent hope, purity, and that child like innocence. They say that a light shine brightest in the dark. Madoka is still that hopeful, innocent girl who wish the best in a not so good world. The other "dark" magical girls are just depressing and there is no hope.
At the end of the day, Madoka is still, at its core, a magical girl show. Here's hoping the new movie will be good.

Todays magical girls: Blood, Violence, Killing, etc..
Precure: hold my pact!
Yeeeeeaaaaaaa!
Am I the only person who likes the darker magical girls because it has more variety to show to all audiences

In one of their episodes, Cure March's siblings were attacked by Majorina as she tried to hit them with a giant orb of energy.

Even Pokemon look hardcore for me ; I never liked the fact that they catch animal (yeah, pokemon, whatever, and I even should say "monsters") in a ball to make them beat each another to dead in an arena. It was not better back then, and in fact, in my opinion, it's just that now, we don't hide things anymore, and don't use metaphor. Even when you look at "girlish" anime, when you look at it now, and you forget the "everything is pink, the life is so great, and to make babies, a stork appears with a white cloth and the baby in it" or shits like that, you see things that wouldn't be OK now for children, like child abuse, homelessness or sometime death. So now, they just remove the "pink" particles but it's about the same content.
No, they’re just sleeping, except those people will never wake up again
Y'know, punching can also put people to sleep.
I'm... okay with this actually.
Back then: Being magical girl stops suffering
Now: Being magical girl is suffering
Back then: Can I become magical girl?
Now: no.
Hetome: I become meguca?
Coobie: no
Back then Magical girls also used to suffer, just watch uncensored and japanese version of the precure shows.
Even back in the 90' and before the magical shows were pretty dark. One of them involve the main character being hit by a truck (and is also one of the most hated anime in Japan).
@@narudayo5053 Minky Momo!
@@narudayo5053 people believed they were the cause of the terrible earthquakes in japan.
Other than that, magical girls were always dark. Young girls fighting crime every week. They're kids, kids aren't ready for these type of things.
Not at all. It's ironic how little the person who made the video knows about Sailor Moon, because it's actually a dark series that the anime tried to lighten up. It's obvious that they were one of the people that got distracted from what actually happened in the series.
If you think being a Magical Girl back then stops suffering, I'm guessing you aren't exactly familiar with Sailor Saturn at all.
Lmao I see this video again today while searching for “gushing over magical girls”. The latest magical girl anime is about bdsm 🤣🤣
Anime then: time to make everything cuttteeeee
Anime now: _it’s just guns and violence._
Dang your right
Sailor Moon is gone I'm sad 😧
No, there is JoJo...
No, now you have more animes of comedy and you still have romantic shojos, you have animes nows more serious like attack on Titan and Banana Fish, they have violence yes, but that's not the focus, attack on Titan and Banana fish show the reality of the world, and now you have more YAOI and YURI thanks god, Now you have more sport anime.
But yes we still have very animes who just focus in violence.
*It relates to real life.*

And the famous Mami death scene too!
Madoka is the original version of this type of new magical girl genre and nobody has been able to copy its mastery. Many have tried, but all have failed in comparison to the masterpiece which is Madoka Magica. It’s honestly one of my top animes.
yep
Even its spin-off, Magia Record can't be at same level with the original one. Great job on Madoka Magica.

I’m so happy no one forgot about CardCaptor Sakura, I’m rewatching it now actually. The manga is kinda creepy due to the villain that’s “half of clow reed” being aware about sakura’s dad being his other half and even points it out to everyone but Sakura.
Edit: GUYS ITS ON NETFLIX!!
That's not the only creepy thing and how is that creepy?

In its..
In its defense... Madoka Magica isn’t supposed to be like any magical girl anime’s... It’s supposed to be something that destroys the original concept and makes it a Hell lot Darker while also lying about what it actually is...
Puella Magica is a Lie to show the truth.
More like 'war' Anime, because none of them are using magical things.
Curse you Urobochi!
PMMM was a genre deconsttuction of the magical girl genre.
Also Ariane, they do use magic, just not in traditional ways. Mami's ribbons are magic and by extension so are the guns as they are made from the ribbons, Homura stops time and shoots those magic bullet things (albiet in only one scene), Sayaka has accelerated healing, Madoka makes magic arrows, and Kyoko has illusion (though they arent used in the anime due to rejecting her wish which sealed the magic).
Exactly
Fun fact: It’s a sub genre of the magical girl genre. Madoka only just made it popular
