As several others have commented, meat pies give off scent and are therefore categorized as bait. IMHO, this is unrealistic. Encasing meat in dough should both prevent scent from escaping and reduce rate of spoilage, neither of which is currently the case in TLD. One might consider that this would make them overpowered, but I think that the restricted ingredients to make dough balances that.
Zak, I've literally watched all of your vids. I have nothing left to watch. I'm going to need you to quit your job and just produce multi hour long TLD vids all day so I can watch them at work. Thanks!
I died on day 579 in my first stalker run in TLD. It was sudden and a huge mistake was made, hubris played its part for sure, thinking I could sleep 9 hours outside in Forlorn Musgeg on my way back to the airfield to find the holster for the rifle. But I got over it and start another stalker run and a new first interloper run (day 6 TWM spawn). Love this game and Ty zak for all you do.
Pies are a definite trigger, wolves seem more determined if I’m carrying more than 1. I no longer keep pies in my inventory at all, I will plan accordingly and eat just before heading out. The travois can manage a whole moose so really carrying any meat on my person is not a thing now.
In Sarah's cooking run she found that meat pies do give a scent. that's why they are dropping with the meat, and why wolves are still coming. Sort of like having 1 or 2 pieces of cooked meat, You don't actually see a scent mark until you pick up enough, but you are definitely still noticeable
It's busy season for my line of travel work so I can't really play on anything but switch and of course that dlc release still has no eta so I've been watching a lot of vids for my tld fix lol
I had the same thing happen in my current loper run with the fire and a shock wolf attack. I had a fire sheltered next to a tree from the wind, and the wolf approached from the opposite side of the tree. I thought he would just spook and run, but apparently the tree blocked the wolfs line of sight to the fire until he got into charge range and he just ignored it and jumped me. The same thing seems to have happened to you with the bear corpse blocking sight of the fire from the wolf that got you. Close one! Love your content. I am only playing Interloper and thriving because I have watched your videos.
I was waiting for this, thank you! I always watch these at the end of the day with my dog and he always gets so excited when the wolves howl, or bark. Can't wait to watch it tonight and see his reaction LOL
I think the outside office at the rail yard is still considered "indoors" in the same way the screen porch of the Pleasant Valley farmhouse is. Also, the pies do generate scent, which is probably why they get dropped as decoys. I too would prefer they not get dropped.
I've been eagerly awaiting the new episode and I was so excited to see a new one come out today. You really inspired me to play The Long Dark again. I'm now on a 55 day interloper run - the longest I've ever done. I couldn't have done it without learning from watching you.
As far as I can tell.. all of the pies made with meat increase you're scent... when they expire, they smell like cooked meat... when fresh.. its more like carrying a cured hide... hence why you drop them as a decoy... cheers
I wish I were as good at killing wolves with the bow as Zack is. Every time I try - every time - I end up wounding them with my hatchet or knife and then bandaging/disinfecting/repairing my clothes.
Am I hearing both Will and astrid character voices ?? While coming to the maintenance yard, I heard Will's hard breathing. Then, in the maintenance yard, we heard astrid's voice. Weird
Before the dlc updates, when the hacksaw and matches were still guaranteed to be at Spence's, I managed to finish forging day 1 after going to Maintenance Yard and finding the hammer. With a 1 in 4 chance for the hammer and no guarantees at Spence's now, I don't see it happening anymore.
Once the wolf attacked and got next to the fire is the ONLY thing that saved you on that one! WOW...super close call! Great job recovering! On to the next!
Okay while I totally understand the reasoning and at first agreed with the reasoning behind why the wolf attacked you, I think there's some evidence that shows the wolf did detect the fire. Specifically the wolf the first time it showed up a few seconds earlier had already ran away from that same direction. On round two if you go back and watch the video again the wolf did stop and growl for 8 or 10 seconds which they only do for fire in general. Imo that shows that it's probably a very low percentage dice roll that is enhanced by havinga bunch of meat, big carcass, and literally being in the middle of one of the most wolf infested places in the game. Of course I don't know for sure. Raff would be able to tell you. It seems like sometimes, though very infrequent, the wolf can get through the fire even though all the parameters seem like it should not. I had the exact same thing happen to me with Scruffy a couple months ago. I was in a wide open spot in the cave and there was no reason for him to attack but he did. Best way to handle it is make sure you're pulling a weapon on them quickly if you're low on condition or defensive abilities.
Hey Zak! If we ever find ourselves in a real life post-apocalyptic world I hope to remember on how to find maple syrup. And if I can’t please keep an eye out, I’ll shoot up a flare. Thanks for the content!
I've not played the update yet, but there was a time when setting meats to your radial menu (from your inventory) made it so you wouldn't drop them as decoys. Worked well for me then.
The long silence and sharp exhale after that last wolf. 😬 Man, this area is infested with hungry wolves, isn’t it? I wouldn’t be surprised if you decide you don’t wanna base here anymore after that. Lol
I've been attacked by a wolf next to a campfire before whilst harvesting. I was still fairly new to the game and had 3 stink lines. I deduced that they will attack by a campfire if you smell strong enough?
The disappearing items issue is still happening, and not even from containers. A distress pistol and one of the new revolver variants disappeared from where I left them on the floor when I went to sleep on two separate occasions yesterday. The flare gun had returned to the orange box, but not the additional flares, which were still where I had put them. I have no idea where the Hunter's revolver went. HL have definitely not fixed this problem.
If you went the wrong way around the black rock penitentiary and end up at the rope up on to the roof. Don’t do what I did, that is sneaking around the building on the ledge and then walk up the leaning tree over the fence. Because when you are at the top of the tree you fall through the ground and fall through the eternity watching the flat earth getting smaller above your head. You Have Been Warned 😅
They just added a feature where, after you die, you can choose to continue the same run up to 3 times, but each time you do, you get a penalty, lose some items, and you spawn somewhere else and have to go back and loot your corpse, so, if you died deep in the mines or inside a den of wolves, it might be pretty challenging to recover it.
Its not too problematic to get that moose meat to the lodge. I've done it like 3 days ago. Just kill him by the gate. And bear just goes up the rope :) Yeah meat pies DO smell. And fishing bait. Damn this run was close to be done.
Is it just me, or are his character’s voice lines now in a man’s voice? I thought he was playing as Astrid… Lol and then the voice lines go back to Astrid later in the episode. Buggy af I guess
Shame that the moose wasn't around to give you a good stomping as well! That way you'd have made the hat trick with a beating from each of the predators! LOL 😁
Me too! I have always gone over the rocks. LOL. As long as I have been playing, it's crazy that I can still be learning new stuff every time I watch one of Zak's videos!
And that's why you never keep any meat on you when cooking outside, you're never 100% safe at an open fire. Personally I would have slept and healed before cooking the bear, there wasn't any reason to rush cooking, could have just eaten cat tails and replace them.
zak " if you get wobbly while you are about to die, just carry a boiling pot of water. It will give you incentive to not pass out and dump a boiling pot of water on yourself"

Yeah it was, I have that in my current run aswell

Hey Zak at 1:28:44 on the bottom left side of the screen near the health bar there appears to be an emergency stim laying in the snow!!
Possibly it is there because of the bear mauling.
Eagle eyes! Yes its likely from the mauling
