This goes with my belief of "Instead of creating something that fits with the times, create something that is timeless." Not every piece of work, be it movie or game should be geared towards a particular age group. Jak, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, all of the big hitters are universal for a reason.....

Matt is the only one who kinda gets it. It is surprisingly difficult to get a real opinion out of a Japanese person. You ask them a really casual question like "What was your favorite game this year?" you're going to get a really casual answer.

That sounds like asking your friend what they like, and they literally can’t answer you with anything specific. A pain i know often.

Given what we've experienced of Evil Within, and given what we've seen from RE7, how backwards listening to this is, it's astounding. And I remember this podcast, and nodding at EVERYTHING they're saying.

CrazyJabberwock in video games, the problem is that big companies are so scared of risk most of the time, you get the capcom effect where they release the same game iteration X a dozen times, or you get the CoD effect where because this game was popular, that means our slightly less polished, later released version will be just as popular, right?

So glad Capcom used this lie as a feint to throw off the law, then commit super hard to survival horror crimes. Even Revelations 2 (which took cues from Last of Us) still went survival horror style.

Do we seriously have to look at this list and have to indentify it with an East-West lense? No one is saying there isn't quality content coming out of Japan, but having an allergic reaction to Japanese developers praising Western games as the best they played for one year just seems a little ridiculous.
I know its late but thay's absolutely how a lot of Japanese devs viewed the video game scene. That's why there was that period where Japanese games were viewed as being "dead". Japanese devs realised that there was a huge market in the West and attempted to capatalize on that by "catering" their games to the West. That's how you end up with shit like Donte May Cry and Yakuza: Dead Souls.
Eventually, they caught on to the fact that the West likes Japanese games because they're Japanese and now Japanese games are hotter than ever.
Estraliae I don’t understand why Yakuza: Dead Souls keeps getting ragged on. Donte May Cry is a reboot meant to appeal to a younger audience, Dead Souls is a zombie shooter because Nagoshi wanted to make a zombie shooter, not because he was appealing to the Western Market. Not only that, the game’s pretty good, the reason it has terrible reviews is because the framerate is ducks below 10 extremely frequently. It’s an unplayable mess, but it had heart put into it, and its lack of success is due to a development problem, rather than a concept problem.

I feel that these days is really easy to create hype, for good and bad, and because of how fast information flows all these companies are relying too much on fan input and starting too loose their indentity (specially japanese devs) to try to Westernise their formula (to a more cinematic type), instead of the simplicity of solid gameplay (like Nintendo). Not everyone can or should go the weird and experimental route (which i always encourage, even with a chance of big money loss) but there's a balance for innovation and rooting.
With re 7 out and then already beating it I'll have to go back and watch it to see if capcom actually made it like last of us

i feel like this was the result because japanese developers never took chances out side of japan , capcom doesn't know about it's fan base .......they had that re shooter with just shooters and re 7 , they became waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too one sided on you can't do shit, now how does at all connected with the story when all the virus before the one in re 7 and re shooter because the trailers in re 7 ,re shooter are just generic lame zombie . they all was just do this ass pull make throw in these lame zombies that just melt after a few hits , now it's lame moldy asshole monsters
