I agree....Charlie nailed his understanding and empathy for the situation.
You can see from Rens work the influence Plan B (references him in Hi Ren) had on his music. Plan B has an album called Ill Manors, which is the soundtrack to a film called Ill Manors (in a similar way to Eminem 8 Mile). The film focuses on the cycle of life repeating itself. Exactly what Charlie references when watching this. (Plan B wrote, directed, produced the film and composed the soundtrack to the film).
I have watched a fair few reactions to this (like most) and very few pick up on this.
Most British people in the UK will know Ill Manors, both the film and the album. US fans out there should put it on their watchlist/playlist if you like Rens stuff. (It can be a hard watch with some very tough scenes). If you watch it, you will see instantly.
What made me realise this is another reactor mentioned that in Jenny's tale the cadence/flow is similar to Renegade by Warren G and Nate Dog. That's a song about thieves going out robbing people with knives. (Shows the depths of Rens production). It is clearly intentional.
So then I tried to work out if the flow of Screeches tale matches any song about rage/panic/ego. (I couldn't work it out), but did lead me to Ill Manors and does mirror parts of the film. Even the filming of stopping to make the phone call in the middle of the song, you'll hear similar things on the Ill Manors album.
I wouldn't be surprised if Violets tale has a cadence/flow matching a song somewhere. But again can't work it out.
Everything's intentional when it comes to Ren. He's a genius.

Amazing reaction and analysis. Like many other Ren fans, I've actually, literally watched hundreds of reactions to Ren's music over the past 2 years. Charlie's background and experience, as well as his empathy make this one of the most informative and entertaining reactions I've seen. If anyone mentions the issues with the audio, yes I could hear that, but it didn't detract from the experience. Thanks for this video, and for your support for Ren. I hope you continue to analyze Ren's videos as long as you enjoy doing it. And thanks for trusting Ren fans enough to make a longer video. No need to be concerned that you'll bore us, that won't happen.

@CharlieCalottaReacts given the setting of the music video, the "imperfections and flaws" were almost ironically perfect. The authenticity that is communicated is what draws us in. The truth that is presented becomes more profound than just the words and images. The sum becomes exponentially more than the parts. Thank you for sharing this step of your journey with us.

This hit my RUclips recommendation, and I thought, "Oh hell no, I don't have an hour and a half!" And I didn't watch. Then I saw a Renegade posted it in the Ren's Rabbit Hole Facebook group and recommended it, in its entirety, but then said a listener could exit around the 45 minute mark and I thought, "Well, maybe. I can always fast forward." (I've seen sooo many reactions, and I dislike it when people pause every 3 seconds and cheat themselves of a chance to even understand what's happening.) So today is a lazy Sunday. You popped up again, and I thought, "Ok, I'll watch part of it." And here I am at the end, having fast-forwarded through absolutely nothing. Brilliantly done! Even after all the reactions I've seen and all the Renegade discussions of these masterpieces, you still brought new thoughts and nuances I hadn't heard before. And my mad respect for the boi continues to grow. New sub. And I'm headed back to put your, "Hi Ren," reaction in my Watch Later list! ❤

Ren was exposed to storytelling with music when he attended folk music festivals with his parents as a child. He's a master of the medium. Fun side note. The hospital room is the bike storage room in a friend's apartment building. They moved everything behind the curtain. Ren wasn't paying attention when he ordered the bed online. They discovered it was a child's bed and Ren is over 6 ft tall. One of his buddies made a riser for it. You and Nicole are fabulous together! The tragedy is deepened somehow by the ages. And what’s unsaid. Jenny and Screech were *both* 14. Both children of the streets. Jenny in high heels walking streets she’d walked a thousand times or more, wanting to escape. Screech threatening to slice the rosy off her cheeks. The heavy makeup. A 14yo girl out late, unprotected, too dolled up, certainly implies the oldest profession.
Then Violet, escaping to a subsidised housing situation at 16. They don’t give you those places just because you leave home. She was pregnant, likely by her father, and then got a job and a flat to escape, meeting Stevie afterwards. Stevie calls her a liar and a slut, and has so much anger. Maybe because she was so very pregnant and they’d not known each other long enough for that. She was a quiet girl, hiding her pain. Did Stevie know about her dad? I’m not excusing him, but I love that Ren includes enough to allow him some humanity, too, if you look hard enough. He wasn’t likely much older than Violet’s 16 or 17 by the time he killed her.
Then the generational cycles. All the women in this tale cope by freezing, fleeing or fawning. Jenny freezes. Violet flees. Violet’s mother dissociates, drinks and caters to her husband. All silent. The men fight and predate, with immature views of “manliness”. Violet’s father, who is maybe Jenny and Screech’s father too, beats and sexually assaults her, likely her mother too. Stevie is comfortable for Violet as they repeat the patterns she’s familiar with, and beats and ultimately kills her. Screech, too, is playing at being “a man”, unable to handle the perceived challenge of disrespect by Jenny’s noncompliance, his girlfriend’s rejection, the policeman’s assumed authority, and his immature machismo gets him killed.
All human. No monsters. That’s the scariest thing of all. The things we as human beings are capable of. It demands empathy and attention from us as a society to all of the people involved in every day dramatic struggles. It’s all too easy to do as the narrator almost mockingly does and shrug out an, “oh, it’s such a shame,” and move on, and if everyone does, nothing will ever change.

Just as a “little” note addendum to your fantastic breakdown to some of my observations- it was the news and the public’s reaction “it’s such a shame” to the news of the death of some woman who was stabbed by some guy, that affected REN so much that he wrote this anthology of a song. There are so MANY little “accidents” that he takes advantage of, like stepping into the spooky green light when Violet dies. The way the narrator voice begins narrating with a sigh exhalation when he narrates the death of each player, like it is the final breath of each, just as much as it is the narrator sighing about the tragedy. Even the graffiti on the walls seem to signify, in Jenny there are dark images and sad images of women on the walls, with screech the walls have images of young punks more punk like graffiti. And all somehow so desolate, until I begin to feel like the graffiti on the walls are ghosts themselves, people’s stories written on the walls, crammed on top of each other into a cacophony of different stories of people long gone.

A little subtle and genious inscinuation in Screeche's tale. I didn't come up with this, I read it in a comment on another video so I won't take credit but it's a very clever theory.
-Screech knocks on Patricks door but Patrick is not at home.
    -Ren as the narrator says:
"No refuge for our villain, for the bitter hands of faith
Have something far more sinister in mind, that does await" (impecable example of foreshadowing)
-He then calls his girlfriend in an attemt to find refuge elsewhere but she says she is "busy"
The theory is that Patrick was not home and his girlfriend was "busy" because his girlfrend was cheating on him with his friend Patrick.
Also Screech inherited his father's violence and Jenny inherited her mother's silence!
Amazing reaction and analysis Charlie and Nicole.

I was shocked when Ren said Screech was based on an exaggerated version of himself at 14!
Also, there are small instagram stories that Ren made, that go before and I believe in between the tales. (Been a while since I've seen them) one of the things they cover is that Patrick is with Screech's girlfriend when he's knocking on his door, and it's why his girl is busy when he calls her. I need to rewatch them, I can't remember if there's anything else.
One thing I noticed that isn't talked about much, towards the end when Ren gets back to Violet at the hospital while she's bleeding out, Ren is bathed in a deep red light. But when he sings "Violet's world turned to black..." the light changes to a blue- green. A hue normally associated with death.
Wonderful reaction and discussion you guys!! I'd love for you two to react to Ren's "Fred Again Mashup" -I highly recommend listening to a little bit of Fred Again before you do the reaction, so you can feel the full weight of Ren's astonishing creativity! Ren's version is so beautiful, it really shows off Ren's voice and guitar skills. They filmed this one live in Ren's Calgary, Canada apartment, while he was being treated for his illness. Absolutely fantastic reaction guys!❤ I love a professional view bc you can really appreciate the incredible intricacies of this piece.
The seagulls in Violet's tale were there already but i reckon Ren allowed them to be heard in the mix to add to the 'reality' hitting Stevie of the situation. All three tales were filmed in Ren's seaside town of Brighton, so seagulls are everywhere. Ren has said in an interview that he mixes and edits the sound himself after recording his live stuff, so it makes sense he would remove external sounds that interfere with the storytelling but allows others through he does want.
Did you know that Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber said in social media that he thought Ren was the best storyteller of a generation (or something along those lines)?
Ren wants to give us Patrick's tale but also a new set of tales based on Van Gogh. Unfortunately, Ren's health has taken a terrible turn for the worse this week and he's had to put everything on hold for now. I'm still excited though. Happy to wait for future masterpieces ❤

Absolutely amazing reaction. I've watched many wonderful reactions to Rens songs, but this was in a league of its own in my opinion. So extremely insightful, I can't comprehend how you grokked all that in just one sitting. I just wanted to say thanks and share something that might resonate with you and that you touched on in the video. I heard that the thing that really triggered Ren to create something out of this news story was a throwaway comment at the end of the article, something like "its such a shame". The trivialization of this whole immense tragedy to "its such a shame" was triggered Ren to create this masterpiece. And by all rights, I think that line tells you something about how we as a society are dealing with these absolute devastating tragedies that occur all around us, and you both already touched upon it in your analysis. I'm so grateful to Ren and you for shining the light on the patterns, complexities and systems at play. Only way to make a difference. Thanks for an amazing video.

The finger tapping at the start of Violet's Tale is more than a talent showcase or a scene setting. What's happening in that hospital room is the emergence of two lives, and the passage of one, captured in the dramatic rapid fire notes of Ren's fingers. He then looks around the room with a dazed expression, maybe like a newborn soul surprised by their emergence into a realm of artificial light and sound.

@@kevinmclaughlin8975 All interpretations welcome and valid. For me, though, a couple clues would suggest otherwise. The fact a surgeon is called in suggests a C-section and anesthetic. Her last conscious moment is appealing to the doctor to let her baby(ies) stay alive before "the curtains closed, the lights went dim". For these reasons I don't think she regains consciousness. Remember, too, that the theme in Screech's Tale is that, "our story it starts, right to the end". In keeping with that, it makes sense that Violet's Tale begins where it ends, with her death on the hospital bed.

I think the seagulls reflect the state of mind of Stevie. Up to this point he's so overcome with rage and intensity that it's like he can't hear the world around him it's all very closed in and focused on his actions, and at the point he realises that Violet isn't faking it and really isn't saying or can't say anything he's snapped back to reality and lifted out of his intensity and the reality of the world around him floods back in with the sounds of the seagulls. It's such a subtle way of showing that transition of Stevie going from righteousness indignation to a "what have I done....." moment

Thank you for such an in depth technical and art conversation, and emotional reaction. It’s super hard to equal REN for your future considerations, but after you get through REN, it’s important to hear the live version of Brother by Matt Corby (on Like A Version), and Lose Yourself by Kasey Chambers who stole it from EMINEM in hair-raising style. As for poor Jenny: it seems like a lot of reactors miss the word clues right at the start that she’s a street walker, and I use that term deliberately instead of sex worker. She’s unprotected by a legal brothel, and inherently in danger on the streets.
For those that catch it, the end of Violet’s Tale is a double blow. Not only are Jenny and Screech unknowingly sister and brother, but Street Walker Jenny was only 14 herself. Having walked these streets a thousand times, that would be a bit under 3 years. Optimistically, she started soon after she turned 12, and died at the end of her 14th year. Even if sex work was legal, there’d be no liscenced brothel that would accept her at that age. What hell hole of an adopted or foster home put her on the street at 12? It’s such a shame.

As a chunk of For Joe is a live performance of the back half of S*icide. Can't go wrong with his two live performances with Chinchilla too, "How to be Me" and "Chalk Outlines"

Most reactors see Screech as a monster, but like the both of you, I felt instant empathy for the fourteen year old child, that he is. Also, you'd be amazed by how many completely miss the heartbreaking ending, which is insane to me, and leads me to believe their reactions are fake, i.e. pretending to be into Ren's music (because it gets so many views i.m.o.), but can't actually be paying attention to lyrics at all! 1:16:38 The sound of the seagulls is him coming out of his rage and reality setting in, like coming back to earth. Great reaction and thanks for your time.

Thank you both for this reaction. I shared this with a good friend of mine after my first hearing and she didn't get the Violet's Tale ending at all because the same violence happened to her 25 years ago. Thankfully, she survived. The father of her child, her son, tried to murder her in her sleep with the baby in the same room. When she watched this video she was so overwhelmed her mind stopped functioning. I did warn her that the final tale included domestic violence but I neglected going into details.
This is Ren's greatest creation so far in my view. The Money Game trilogy is almost as good. I look forward with some confidence that he will surpass it.

Oh no she Dissociated out of PTSD trauma. It can be hard judging how to give trigger warnings, because people with triggers have different levels of stuff, different levels of detail they can cope with, and sometimes we traumatized consider then ignore the warning because you want to be seen by having your type of experience explored. I need a TW for incest, often I nope out of conversations, don’t even start documentaries and news articles because I have to not. But I can cope with Violet’s tale because the mention is kept very brief, and comes with the cushion of beautiful music. And I’ve never listened to it directly again, it’s an emotional distancing to watch other people react.
I haven’t thought about it, but maybe the reactors’ tears about it all are healing for me???
The physical violence to Violet by Stevie is sustained and made incredibly visceral by REN here in comparison to the multiple rapes by her father.

Ren is a modern day bard painting such vivid imagery with his storytelling that it pulls you in and forces you to keep watching - even when it gets physically uncomfortable during Violet’s Tale. And Ren uses this ability to shed light on far too real issues in the world. Ren is special. And I truly appreciate your appreciation for him ❤
