Dubai Airshow looks fun! Airshows are important or at least the static displays are, but till now, I still couldn't find out why flying displays like these are important other than the fact that they draw crowds. Please shed some light, thanks!
For combat aircraft, showing capabilities is no bad thing, either to sell jets or to promote an air force's skill and combat-readiness to friends and foes. Also, there are plenty of politicians, press and VIPs here, who want to be entertained and can be influenced by dramatic performances by aircraft for sale, or shows of friendship by potential allies. Remember that trade shows like Dubai are a very small subset of the airshow world, though. 99% of airshows exist solely as public events - either businesses funded primarily by ticket sales, or free shows backed by local governments/air bases to promote the base or increase tourism. At most shows, the flying display *is* the whole event and it exists for the sole reason that the public want to come and watch it.
