Maybe we should stop buying Monstera Albos

- The ONE thing you need to know about buying a Monstera Albo cutting is to check the stem. Seeing the stem and looking for the growth point (auxiliary bud) is the main way you can determine what a mid cutting of a monstera will look like in the future.

i bought albo monstera to cut it up into multiple cuttings and give them away for free to crash the local market. Cause they are unreasonably expensive
the hero we need 😄
@@KillThisPlant Pandemic created even more hype around plant collecting and the prices spiked so high. I always wanted an albo because I love monsteras and after getting one, I can safely say my regular monstera is so much better. Albo is like the middle child. I love it because I have to.

It is challenging saying goodbye to a loved plant, but sometimes it's necessary. Good to know the risks of these albos!
No Intro. Straight to the point. Thank you, for not wasting my time. A rare sight und RUclips nowadays. Like
“Here for a good time, not a long time” is a positive perspective. I had no idea they were so inconsistent!
You’re quickly becoming one of my favorite plant youtubers. Always informative. 💯
Man I hate the albo market so much, i got a Thai Constellation baby for $70 specifically BECAUSE it had a lower variegation. So many of these Albos i see on the market have way too high of a variegation to be healthy plants and it sucks.
Fair point! I also think lack of knowledge of what to expect with this plant plays into people being able to sell such challenging, high white cuttings.
Thank you so much for keeping me from a very costly mistake
Happy to help
Thank you for yet another informative clip. I don’t own one, or at least I don’t think I do 😂. I paid $60 for a small plant from a private seller who said it was an albo and pointed out a minuscule white spot, assuring me it would grow more white. I’m waiting… but it’s only been a few months since I’ve had her. I do love my syngonium albo and find her equally, if not more, beautiful.
Syngonium albo is a great plant for anyone looking for white variegation with less risk (faster growth, more opportunities to propagate).
I'm curious what your $60 plant looks like 😒 wonder if the seller was being honest.
@@KillThisPlant I think she was. I’d purchased a few other plants from her before. The plants has some new growth but no white. Yet! I’m hopeful.
@@KillThisPlant I got my Albo cutting for $60 as well! It was a "low variegation" cutting, but the leaves have almost all been halfmoon. Very happy with how healthy it is. Here's hoping no solid white leaves appear 😬 Thanks for the explaination of why Albos aren't stable plants, I was trying to explain the other day why they aren't grown commercially when they are so popular, this really cleared things up 😊
Love the way you explain in your videos

I went to a local plant swap yesterday and it was so hard not to buy the pretty albos, but I know I'm saving myself from a headache later on
Maybe one day!

Thank you!
Love the breakdown and honesty. I wish all new malbo owners knew this before buying
I knew, honestly the randomness is what makes this plant so beautiful to me
They're so beautiful, I love the bright white leaves... for all the two minutes that they last.
Maybe this is just me and up to personal preference. I don't really understand what the obsession with variegation is. It just looks more like an imperfection. I won't reject a plant because of it but it isn't something I specifically seek out in a plant either.
I don’t understand it either.
Albo looks better.
I just got a tiny dancer (named him elton) as a gift its a small alocasia and while the videos of yours I’ve seen have covered mainly the large breeds your information is of great help thank you.
I just got an adansonii albo tip cutting for 35usd so I'm a bit more willing to chance how it turns out. I got two syngonium fantasy and an epipremnum pinnatum variegata aswell, no extra. Prices are finally becoming reasonable enough to just mess around.
I am not a huge fan of variegations, I love plain dark green plants like anthurium, the new fancy thing coming is orange variegations !
I'm a big fan of medium variegation. It seems to be a lot more stable.
Wow, this was so educational! I was about to invest over $200 on one of these plants, but, after hearing you out...well, lets say I'll play it smart and invest in something much more reliable. Thanks so much for your video!
Just got a node from GreenEscape on Etsy for $20. No pictures of the specimen I purchased so no idea what I'm getting but for $20 I will roll the dice. I have been waiting for the market to come down and we are finally getting there with the albos. My guess is the only reason GreenEscape has these nodes is because they are working on mass producing a line. So wait a while longer, maybe 1-3 years, and I am sure you can get an established young albo for under $40.
I learned this lesson with my hoya Krimson Queens. I read the stem to predict how much green or white will be on the next leaves based on how much pink there is on the stem, and it's a crapshoot.
I'd second this for Thai Constellations too. Some are more susceptible to loosing all their white variegation sections faster, some are super prone to root rot while others aren't bothered by your conditions after being in TC most of their lives. It's taken me 6 tries to get one without loosing the roots within a week of it arriving, though I'm hopeful 2 I was worried I lost ( i luckily put the leaves in water as they were pretty despite loosing their nodes) and both have new root growth so here's hoping they'll survive. TC plants are great but some are just super delicate and just changing potting mix or their spot in the house has them throwing death screams
We have some massive Thai constellations at my work, they're selling them for 500 aud 😭
I had no idea it works like that, thank you.
my favourite leaf happens to be the mottled leaf pattern, and my albo seems to be following that pattern to a T! its pretty, doesn't brown, and has a stable growth pattern for me, if you want a good albo for the variegation to last, a 35:65 white to green ratio where the white is speckled throughout!
Thank you for posting this- I know it’s not a popular opinion- but I feel most variegated plants looks sickly. I’m not going to be shopping for any of them-
I'm not sure if I like them, or if I'm just supposed to like them.
Definitely with you on this 🪴
I think it depends on the plant. Some like pothos are varieties from a naturally variegated original so they tend to be the more stable and plants you can easily manipulate varigation on, while there are others that.... you swear just have a death wish like Albo Monstera😅
@@KillThisPlant right! And this is why I watch 💚
"One day it just chose violence" 🤣
I made this mistake last summer. I bought a nice albo philodendron and tye leave was a high mix of white to green. It's produced 3 leaves. 2 were all white and slowly died. The 3rd leaf is 95% white with 5% green. I didn't know to look at the growth points at the time.
😖
Tip: Since I started using bottled or filtered water with good light my albo leaves have stopped browning
Just found your page, and already in love with the info and delivery you bring. Thanks for these details, I'm considering purchasing this plant because it IS beautiful, but I'm still having doubts about it. I dont like crunchy leaves.
Thanks for the kind words!
Best of luck if you do buy one.
I Never had any problems and I think they are extraordinaryly beautiful.
Sure every now and then some growth turns white but it grows like weeds anyways so I really don't see the problem.
Almost ALMOST jumped into the “trend du jour” but honestly I now just want beautiful heathy plants I can fuss over.
Totally agree. Also there are some verigated plants that are much more stable. Like neon pothos. Sure, it verigation is basically almost invisible on most of its leaves, or only very slight, but who cares when the leaves push out either a dark green or a neon green. It's a pretty plant regardless that won't go downhill so long as it's looked after properly. I'd rather put my money into something like that, that I can enjoy for a long period of time, then something that's just a ticking time bomb.
There's always going to be a variegated next new thing. Sometimes saying 'no thanks' is the best option.
Your video and explanation about plants are so direct and informative. You are a great plant video maker! Your are among the best here in RUclips!
Thank you so much!
I am back and I wanted to ask you if you had to deal with pests and what is your usual routine with acquir ing new plants (e.g. quarantine, how to do it, how long, what to look for etc) I love your videos and you're one of the few youtubers whose advice and tips were actually helpful. I have stopped getting new plants for about a year now but somehow that didn't stop the pest problem. I live on a 5th floor and ever since I moved here 3 years ago I been getting the most insane variety of shit - rose powdery mildew, spider mites, FALSE SPIDER MITES, thrips, mealybugs, fungus gnats (ofc. how can one live without the fucking things), I'm like a pokemon trainer but against my will.
I bought a middle cutting with two leaves back in June and it didn’t do nothing for a couple of months. It’s been two months and it’s given me three new leaves. But I must say and admit I don’t care for that plant anymore. I forget to water it I don’t look at it either. My love for aroids went to the moon I’m more into Anthurium’s and dope philodendrons. I plan on selling my Albo this spring.
Thank you for this information also!!
Hate it when you buy a wishlist plant and it turns out you don't even like it.
It's definitely not a gamble if you have one with nice marbled variegation all around the stem. Thats a fully stable albo. Yes it can have leaves with a bit more green and some with a bit more white - but it won't go full green or full white.
My half moon betrayal started off as really even marbled all around the stem. I thought I'd be safe 😩
We bought one from someone on Facebook market place. Luckily I knew what to look for and we have a new leaf with variegation on it. It’s coming along nicely.
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS ‼️ You get to the point and don’t waste time and there is no annoying background music😎
Solid advice man.
That’s a gamble I’m okay with!!
This was SUPER helpful as I’ve only ever heard people say just give more or less light! Thank you!!!
Glad it was helpful!
@@KillThisPlant very much so! Never heard it explained like that before!!
@@KillThisPlant only other advice I’ve heard is if fully white to cut it back to the last leaf that had stable variegation
Ive managed to keep my mid cut alive. But no new leaves since I’ve brought it home about a year ago. Does it need more light?? Also, Thanks for the great content.
Lack of light is probably the main reason for slow growth (unless it has persistent pest issues). Remember to introduce more light slowly.
Thank you that was very helpful!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your kindness 🌱🌱
Hallo, Like your Videos mostly, but this one hast an Info thats not OK..
The 3-5 leafs are mostly have less White and morgen Green in because to build up a healthy plant. Later if there ist enough Light, the plant can exist and will build up more White variegation. 😉🙋🍃
Thank you for watching my videos. If you could bring out more green or more white in these plants by giving it more or less sun, everyone would be able to have a perfectly balanced albo. It is genetics, not light exposure that will determine it's colour.
Someone had to say at!
How do you feel about Thai Cons? I don't have one yet, but I have heard that the variation is more stable, even though propagation is tricky.
Their variegation is stable, I wish I had room for another large form!
Nice information 😍😍😍.
Have you ever tried a fungi fertilizer? Like great white.
Am I wrong for not wanting to Start purchasing monsteras? I purchased one and I seem to not really be having a lot of luck with it and I love hoya's and pothos and I think I'm just going to stick with thicker leaf plants like the ZZ plant snake plants
I prefer pothos. Though I have four (normal) monsteras and I do like them. I mean, I wish I didn't have four of them cus that's overkill. But I'd be happy with just one (I'm waiting for a careless relative to kill their monstera, so I'll give them one of mine ).🤷♀
Of course not! Not everyone is looking for a challenge with this hobby.
I’m with you, MsAsheeraA, I’m probably not (never say never😂) going to start purchasing monsteras.
My home has low light, and I’m sure monsteras would be a bit frustrating for the amount of effort needed.
❤️🍀
Way better investment for variegated plants is to buy monstera Thai Constalation but in my entire region (my country + neighbors) they don't have it on a market yet and cost of import documentation and permit is too high and of course the risk of dying on a way to the destination. (Same goes to ZZ raven)
What country?
@@KillThisPlant Balkans countries generally
Great video, very informative. I do not grow albas for many of the reasons you cite.
How do you keep the leaves from Browning?
Consistent care and good lighting.
More specifically people have been messing around with a soilless blend, silica, and a 2 part hydroponics fertilizer.
It looks like my next leaf will be mostly white. I know that the mother plant did make half-moon and full moom leaves so I'm going to assume it will continue to grow in the same pattern and hopefully there is enough green in my cutting to sustain itself until the third leaf grows. However, I have seen so many videos about predictions of what the next leaf would look like, and nobody does a follow-up! I'm not entirely sure how exact this grow point theory is. It's a bit too small to predict exactly how much variegation a whole large leaf would have. For example, I see a couple of tiny green streaks in my growth point. They are barely thicker than a hair. I'm nof sure if that counts at all, lol. It would be great if somebody dedicated the time to do a test with recorded predictions and the results.
While i love the look, i just don't see a practicality in it especially my goal is to a plant as healthy as possible. It's like breeding pugs with the shortest face... Cute, but can't breathe and potentially kill them. This is very informative. thank you
This is why i am trying to grow out a bunch to sell, but potted plants are more expensive to ship. Its a tradeoff.
Would supplementing glucose help ?
In theory yes, but how would you get it in?
I’m starting to understand why these are $300 plants lowkey
Amazing breakdown! I gotta keep these tips, esp the cutting stuff, in mind :) thank you!!
You got it!
Is it normal for the white leaves to turn brown?
Yes
Does that apply for alocasia also?.
Most of this information doesn’t apply to alocasia
Just bought a top cutting with open envelope and new growth it has the more tiger patern really hoping it remains that way as to not have cut brown leaves off
Thank you for this excellent, helpful information Lee. All the best!
Glad it was helpful!
Not this coming on my feed the day I buy a mid-cut albo rooted node HAHAHAHA
If the monstera have very good marble it shouldn't be a problem
I prefer thai constellation. Monstera albo is scaring me. 😂
This video speaks all the truth. I love my albo which, knock on wood, is very stable still. It only shows marbled varigation of +/- 25% so far. It's always a gamble with albos and that's a very important thing to be aware of before you go ahead and pour a lot of money into a cutting. You want something stable invest in a Thai Constellation instead.
Its crazy how some people bought these for like 50-200$, these always turns to green eventually.. I think these variegations are a biggest plant scam ever :D
Thank you for this! Mine has been half moon and is slowly going more white.. not quite sure if I need to cut back the light or not! It was just winter time; so maybe that is why it has leaned towards the white side. Here’s to spring and summer! Bring back some more variegation and green leaves!
Not a small form fan. Although striking, I prefer the stability of variegation and growth form of the Thai Con.
Is this true for Pink Princess as well?
Sorta but not really, pink princess seems to be able to completely disappear and then return.
I bought a very nicely striped green and white cutting. Super lovely, the leaf that came with it was highly variegated. Sucker is shooting all white leaves. I mean, Ima keep it till she can no longer sustain, but it was very much worh it to me just fir the anticipation.
I'm not buying albos until they come way down in price. I suggest buying a regular monsters, try propagating it, if you have major problems with these, albos are more temperamental and problematic. I got a cheap variegated plant just to try, it was cheap, and it died. Because albos are pricey this is just a suggestion to learn how to do this with a cheaper plant. If you lose it at least the price is much more reasonable
Most albo and varigated plants with similar pigment mutations have issues with growing. It’s quite annoying.
Why are these plants expensive? I don’t get it?
I dont know if you talked about difference (if its true at all) between monstera deliciosa large and small "form". I would appreciate some detailed explanation and if i buy the "small" form then I would or wouldn't have those bigger fenestrated leaves and huge stems after about 9 years (approximately time that is needed for plant to get fully mature in average house environment).
Why where some of the leaf Turing brown
Hi, so I just repotted my monstera yesterday, but after I was done I did not like the look of it because of bad placement of the plants. Is it okay to take it back out again and re organize the 3 plants I have in the one pot, or will it be to much stress for the plant?
I'm sure it'll be fine.
Just found your channel after discovering root rot on my brand new albo, the 1st I've ever purchased. It has one leaf coming out of a node with a 7 inch aerial root, with the roots at the end of the aerial root. The rot was in the roots itself. I pulled it up to look at the roots because there was a brown spot on the white side of the leaf. My question is... Should I place the entire aerial root in with the roots or leave it above ground?
made me decide to not get a monstera albo
I’ve never had one before so this is a genuine question, what’s the big deal if some of the leaves are all white and some all green? Is there a link to the health of the plant or is it just an undesired aesthetic? Personally I like the unpredictable colors and the variety of variegation but I’m wondering if it is a problem or do others just not enjoy it?
All white leaves with no chlorophyll don't produce any energy to help the plant. But they do require energy to stay alive. The plant will generally kill them off, turning brown and falling off quickly.
So informative, well beyond just a regular old cutting for propagation. Thanks!
Where can i buy a SUPER unstable one that will like grow differently every month lol
If by super unstable you mean it turns all white and then dies...Etsy!
New plant parent here.
Your videos are extremely informative, I was looking at an albo but I should focus more on my current girls before adding such a finicky plant.
Lol the tongue-in-cheek caption and channel title, but the info is far from a joke and straight to the point. Love eeeet!!
Unstable variegation 😮
Cheers bro this video helps alot now I know why some cuttings I got from a friend at work wont grow
These younger chickies need to watch your videos.
Great tips! So much I didn't know. Thank you :)
Im so thankful I found your channel, I've learned so much, you explain things really well and are a great teacher! Thanks!
😮 I’ll just stick to non variegated monsteras
This is also applicable for the variegated Ficus elastica (Tineke, Shivereana, etc.)
Whoa…this is too complicated for me. I will just buy them
You are the best!
It chose violence 😂
Oh very interesting looking at my cutting the growth node looks mostly white with a significant patch of green. So if this trend continues I'll probably have to, what cut it back and hope the verigation isn't too extreme?
It's possible. You'll have to wait and see. Hope you get lucky!
@@KillThisPlant honestly for me it's fine if I end up pruning a lot. The dream is for my hydroponics system to take over my house and I'll sell divisions and cuttings of orchids and airoids. Basically I only want one that looks cool and propagate out a breading stock.
Damn. I just bought my first Albo from an Etsy seller and when I received my cutting it’s about 80% white and 20% green. She wanted to charge extra for pictures of the different cuttings and since it was already so much money, I didn’t want to pay anything more. But I guess it’s technically my fault for taking the risk of not paying the extra money to guarantee I was getting a good amount of green 😭
I'm sorry what? Charge you for taking more photos? Was she mailing you high gloss printouts? 😐
So glad i watched this! I just bought one a couple weeks ago
I got an albo for like 10ish dollars, so it's not too bad if it turns out to suck
Great price, hope you get something good from it.
How about Thai constellation? Is it more stable? Can you predict their variegation or the amount of white and green? And how about other types of variegation? Are they more stable? Is it different in different types of plants? Are some more prone to s*itty variegation? So many questions..
Thai con has stable variegation and will look basically the same as the leaves are telling you.
Nick Alexander has an indepth video on other kinds of variegation.
ruclips.net/video/tnzvvpz23wE/видео.html
I did not realize this, is this the same to others like with variegation? I have 1 golden pothos that have 3 different colors after propagating its cuttings; 1 became just green, 1 became the usual golden pothos variegation and 1 with a paler-whitish variegation. The whitish variegation is the slowest to grow compared to the other 2.
The whiter/cream variegation is how we got Marble Queen Pothos. It's the same plant.
Thanks
I love mostly green with splashes of white. Or a half moon splash
