Not blocking intersections aside, it's about gas conservation. When the car in front of me pulls up and immediately stops, I'm not getting anywhere sooner no matter how quickly I close the gap. So I'll coast and wait to apply gas until the gap becomes a car length or more and is continuing to grow. It doesn't hold anyone up until people try to cut in

Get a dash cam, first of all, this way you have video and can post it shame these people. Second, get a special number to call to report these clowns. Third, $139 is pennies to some of these people. Make it $1,390 or more for repeat offenders. Fourth, the offenders get immediately removed from line and sent back to the end of the line. If it's not busy, they get next ferry. Repeat offenders get steeper punishment added until they're banned. Line jumping isn't cool, but this is downright disrespectful. Those people don't believe in rules and are always dangerous to deal with but are the worst of it happens to them.
It seams to me that the simple solution is just to add several license plate readers along the line and when you catch a cheater just add the fares of every car/truck that they cut to their fare and let those people ride free. If you want to pay $400 to $2000 dollars to cut people off, you could at least compensate them. :)
Take away their drivers license... ITS a privilege, NOT A RIGHT..... IF they get caught driving with no or a suspended license, minimum ONE year in jail OR prison, with NO reduction in sentence allowed... 2nd offense? 10 years prison... Lets put a stop to POOR drivers.. About 30% minimum of drivers on the road should ALL have bus passes and NEVER be allowed to drive in my opinion.....
I’ve let law enforcement know about problems for many years. They have not been patrolling for cutting because as they tell me, they are there for safety first- Homeland Security for transportation. Glad they are patrolling but cutting and rage are bad now because they have not been patrolling despite being told of cutting and rage. Someone pulled a pistol a couple of years ago in the line for the Fauntleroy terminal. Even that didn’t prompt patrols.
@@shootshellz I don’t support that but have to live with it. Line cutting has been an issue for many years (before defunding movement). A law was passed making line cutting illegal about 10 years ago.
@@shootshellz I guess you're "shell-shocked," because you don't seem to understand how "time" works. @@kenc2257 Consideration? They did defund the police. Why don't you familiarize yourself with the projected Seattle police budget for 2021 and what it actually was. Same thing with 2022 and what it actually was. The projected budgets were made at the end of the last decade.
How about staffing the ferries properly and providing enough boats to adequately service this system. Highest gas tax in the nation, and we're operating outdated boats and not enough crew to operate what we have. I can see why people are losing patience
Faulting the road rage because of line cutting is like firing the one employee who is trying to stop shop lifting. Why not focus on the cause of the problem and not the result of it ?
There is no "due process" in their new process. I can easily see people gaming the new rules by reporting non-offenders and sending them to the back of the line.
Not just the ferry, the whole downtown Seattle have a bunch of cars cutting to the lane with traffic last minute. They do this to avoid the line to get into the highway
I don't have to worry about that. I print out my ticket at home, and ride my motorcycle right up onto the dock. Many Washington State ferries have priority boarding for motorcycles as they want to load you first.
About 5 years ago, LEOs referred people to a 1-800-HERO phone number to report cutters. The problem is a letter was sent to the registered owner which isn’t necessarily the driver committing the violation. After a few letters, supposedly an LEO visited the home of the repeat offender. If they aren’t home, it’s a waste. If they were home, they don’t have to open the door. Lazy enforcement.
If they were smart, they'd enact an "Owner's Liability" aspect to that law. Upon a report of the violation (including a license number), the owner of the vehicle can be cited (by mail) and prosecuted without having to know who was driving. The owner can only get out of it if they provide the identity of the driver and there is enough evidence to prove that this person was driving... or if the car was reported stolen prior to the violation. My state has this for a handful of violations, including Fleeing, Hit & Run, & Loud Car Stereo.
Sounds like the size of the queue is enough to cost-justify at least 1 more ferry. Are they saying, with all that demand, they can't cost justify more? Are they in the ferrying business or in the make-more-money business? Is this a class run by W C Fields and Mike Todd?
As kids we were taught, maybe years ago, to get in line and wait your turn…hurry up and wait…so now someone is wrong for standing up for their respectfulness and obedience. LEOs should give the person standing up for themselves a medal and punish the cheaters. One person here said $1000 fine and 90-day loss of ferry use. That should be a minimum start point.
Just put up concrete lane dividers and once they’re entered into a lane they are forced to stay in that lane. Deny anyone who has expressed any signs of road rage including verbal from riding the ferry for 1 full year.
Maybe if we had new boats enough people and parking garages on each side of the ferry terminals it would be a effective way too travel but until then i drive around
Is no different then road construction here, signs posted half a mile in advance to merge into one lane or the other and yet a-holes race ahead to the exact spot where two turns to one and expect to get in line; people are just rude, selfish, and lacking morals on the highways today.
Sadly, there is some logic and purpose to having drivers drive all the way up to the merge. I don't do it, and I look at it as people trying to get ahead of everyone else, BUT... it DOES avoid the line of cars extending even further back by allowing excess cars to fill in that lane that ends, thereby minimizing the area/line of potential backups, accidents, road rage, etc. Plus, it's often actually SUGGESTED, as they often put lighted signs up encouraging the "zipper merge" all the way up at the merge. "When a vehicle slows down to merge early in heavy traffic situations, it puts all drivers in danger, slowing traffic down too quickly, leading to unexpected crashes or angry motorists. These dangers are decreased using the zipper merge. Traffic backups can be reduced as much as 40%." ijs
Zipper mege is the law in Washington. If you are merging early you are in the wrong and you are causing additional traffic. Traffic engineers have modelled both methods and found zipper merging to be more efficient, you are not smarter than them.
Perfect example of Seattle not fixing the problem. So we've been short on ferry personnel and ferrys for over 2 years the fairies that we do still have our from the 1960s... Seattle has made record amount of income the past couple years... Yeah we the taxpaying people get nothing but higher taxes more traffic and hours long commutes .
A gate, and few cameras would take care of the problem. Camera 1 is at the initial car feed area watching for line cutters, the gate is before the check in (or whatever it is) to the ferry. Line cutter seen by camera 1 is fed to camera 2 at the gate. Gate opens to divert line cutter to a holding area where a ticket is issued and driver is looped back to the end of the queue. The non-cutter line proceeds forward as if nothing ever happened to all the normally queued up cars. Simple. Same procedure used for filling pop bottles. If one is noticed to be short on fluid, the line doesn't stop but the bottle is diverted.
A spokesman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol went on TV and told people to cut in line when lanes narrow from 3 lanes to 2 or 2 lanes to 1 lane. I'll pull over in the lane narrowing and won't let them pass, they get pissed so what.
Sounds like they don't have enough line-cutter law enforcement. They might think about putting rookie officers on bicycles or scooters, and have them zip up and down the ferry line, looking for offenders.
I told you guys this about three months ago: "Just wait till the summer months!" And there you have it; and it's not just in Washington, it' just about everywhere. Sad!
I’m always surprised by the lack of line cutting in WA state. People are SO polite, too much actually. It’s so easy to take advantage of people’s politeness. Time to be assertive Washington!
'Queue jumping' we call it, but the simple solution is for the County/State to make sure that there's no opportunity for this to happen, put lane barriers in place, a solid object to block them...
It’s not physically possible - the ferry lines are parallel to regularly traveled roads. Each time there’s an intersection, there would be a break in the barrier.
I had found the drivers in Washington state to be particularly courteous and respectful of the idea of fair. I can understand their frustration with people not respecting their rights. Which is a sign that an immediate crackdown on line cutters is necessary to restore public confidence in the system. I am certain that if an ambulance was carrying someone to hospital that everyone would make space without hesitation. But for someone who is merely self entitled why should anyone give them anything at all.
That's crazy. I live on the largest island in the continental United States (Long Island) and we only have two ferries-both to Connecticut. Thanks for the info/answer.
NOPE! State law prohibits traffic cameras taking a photo of the driver's face. Only license plates. Thus the defense: 'I was not driving at the time; it was my Uncle Fred from Las Vegas'. Back to the drawing board for you.
Why not simply increase the ferry service frequency? It seems like the demand is present to justify the cost. Better still, increase the cost for cars and lower the price for walk-on riders to encourage people to take the ferry by foot.
Since it’s a known problem at that intersection (and it was even 25 years ago when I lived there) why not have a cop stationed there all the time writing tickets? Raise the fines, add more consequences. As stated, it’s an enforcement issue as are many of the traffic issues that Washington now has. Cause and effect.
Arrest these line cutters, impound their cars and give them a couple of weekends of community service. A MUCH stronger message than a piddly $130 fine needs to be sent. .
Put line cutters vehicles at the very back of the ferry and roll them into the water. That will help ensure no repeaters. These fluffy fines are doing nothing.
In order for that fine to stick in the courtroom.... The witness has to come to court and testify..... Highly unlikely that ever happens...... Good luck
Interesting. There is no law against line-cutting. There should be. However, I had the same situation happen to me, someone tried to cut into line in front of me. I just didn't let him. He even tried it twice. Both times I cut him off, even gave him the horn. You have vehicular rights! You have the right to stand in line and not be interfered with!
There’s a flaw here for cheaters to exploit: as you approach the booth you could tell them anyone cut in line (wether they did or not) and if they move them to the back of the line without any evidence…..🤷🏼♂️
I would not act out anger, but believe me I understand it. I see this sort of driving behavior all the time, and it happens most often when some "good driver" leaves an unnecessary amount of space in front of them.
If the fine was$1000.00, and/or 90-day suspension from riding the ferry it would go a long way toward stopping line cutters.
They won’t even arrest shoplifters, so no 😂
You could probably add another ferry pretty quick lol

There's a traffic light to allow cross traffic. When the ferry line has a red light, folks on can slip in.
There are crossing intersections...you can't block the intersection, so there will be space between vehicles there...
I’m confused...if the line to the ferry has intersections with lights controlling the flow of traffic, how are those with a green light “cutting the line”?
Not blocking intersections aside, it's about gas conservation. When the car in front of me pulls up and immediately stops, I'm not getting anywhere sooner no matter how quickly I close the gap. So I'll coast and wait to apply gas until the gap becomes a car length or more and is continuing to grow. It doesn't hold anyone up until people try to cut in
The people upset with the line cuts are getting mad and arrested and what about the line cutters causing the problems? How about getting rid of the root problem?
I reported a line cutter to one of the booth people. They nodded and did NOTHING...
If you even do one road rage that should end your right to own a car and a License hot heads do not deserve a car if you cannot hold your temper you should not be behind the wheel
I once had a polite tap on the shoulder, "the line starts back there". I was so embarrassed and mumbled an apology to 100 people. Now if you try and tell someone their tire is flat you might get shot. You wait just like the rest of us.
Lol, for real. I tried to alert someone their front headlights were not on at night. They started cursing at me, gave me the finger, and pointed to the side of the road. Insanity...
If you report the line cutting incidents to terminal workers at pay booth they just give you a shoulder shrug and a "I still hate my job" face. If WSF cared about patron's safety they would hire security.
Why would a minimum wage earner care? It's like employees working at a store that don't do anything about shoplifting. It's not worth the hassle nor part of their job description.

You're cutting the line could mean someone missing a loved one passing away, or something along those lines.
Fine should be at least $300.

Line cutters are just everywhere, road construction waiting to last second to merge... these people must never have dealt with line cutters in school pick up lines, lol. I MEAN line cutters even in lines waiting for Christmas light displays. I've seen people let it a car loaf of kids in store parking lot to block parking space close to front.
Great idea! And when the line cutter gets to the booth, the $139 fine gets added to their fare!
This is everywhere
I’ve let law enforcement know about problems for many years. They have not been patrolling for cutting because as they tell me, they are there for safety first- Homeland Security for transportation. Glad they are patrolling but cutting and rage are bad now because they have not been patrolling despite being told of cutting and rage. Someone pulled a pistol a couple of years ago in the line for the Fauntleroy terminal. Even that didn’t prompt patrols.
That is what you get when you defund the police. Learn to live with it.
@@shootshellz I don’t support that but have to live with it. Line cutting has been an issue for many years (before defunding movement). A law was passed making line cutting illegal about 10 years ago.
@@shootshellzWhen was the State Patrol "defunded"??
@@shootshellz I guess you're "shell-shocked," because you don't seem to understand how "time" works. They would bust the innocent driver who speaks up instead of the cutter. That’s Seattle
It’s bad at the Fauntleroy terminal in West Seattle too.
How about staffing the ferries properly and providing enough boats to adequately service this system. Highest gas tax in the nation, and we're operating outdated boats and not enough crew to operate what we have. I can see why people are losing patience
What is the RCW code for cutting in line.?
maybe ADD A FEW MORE FERRIES???
Faulting the road rage because of line cutting is like firing the one employee who is trying to stop shop lifting. Why not focus on the cause of the problem and not the result of it ?
"Because of the way thing's are these days, no one will say anything" Sad, sad, sad.😢
Wait your turn jeez
That's because there are so many self entitled people in this state. It's disgusting. The entitlement in this state is mind blowing.
If possible, add a couple more ferry boats.
Do you have commitment lines on traffic lanes? If you bust a solid white line it is 3 point improper lane use. Hello Mr. Insurance agent.
Oops, my foot slipped off the brake.

Try that on a ferry in BC, Canada and you will be denied access to the ferry by staff and forced to the back of the line.
It’s taken Edmonds - Lynnwood 4 years just to repair a main road, so…
Triple the fine.
You know, if you just crack down years ago you wouldn't have a problem with road rage would you?
Traffic backups can be reduced as much as 40%."
ijs
Zipper merging is the better way. It uses all of the road efficiently and helps prevent traffic jams.
Zipper mege is the law in Washington. If you are merging early you are in the wrong and you are causing additional traffic. Traffic engineers have modelled both methods and found zipper merging to be more efficient, you are not smarter than them.
This is when a good trucker is in line, they move over some and prevent that. It's Awesome of you ever to get watch 1.
The ones cutting in, should be the ones getting arrested
A spokesman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol went on TV and told people to cut in line when lanes narrow from 3 lanes to 2 or 2 lanes to 1 lane. I'll pull over in the lane narrowing and won't let them pass, they get pissed so what.
Maybe they should arrest the line-cutters and solve the problem before it gets violent.
@@Look_What_You_Did yeah. I did. What I say, stands.
Sounds like they don't have enough line-cutter law enforcement. They might think about putting rookie officers on bicycles or scooters, and have them zip up and down the ferry line, looking for offenders.

Each time there’s an intersection, there would be a break in the barrier.
rich people slugging rich people getting on the ferry. I'll join that RUclips channel!!!

Why not simply increase the ferry service frequency? It seems like the demand is present to justify the cost. Better still, increase the cost for cars and lower the price for walk-on riders to encourage people to take the ferry by foot.
this needs to be a law everywhere not just at this location. Get some of these people who dont understand yield signs on highway entrances and exits.
Since it’s a known problem at that intersection (and it was even 25 years ago when I lived there) why not have a cop stationed there all the time writing tickets?
