  • I went to a yard sale a couple weeks ago and there was a huge box of sewing patterns for sale. I saw one cute pattern on top in my size and asked if the patterns were sold by the piece or the box and she said the whole box was $5! I figured I'd get at least $5 worth of fun looking through these old gems so I bought it and you can look through it with me today!

Excellent find! Boy, I remember countless hours at Hancock’s, House of Fabrics & So Fro. My mom was a dress designer before she married and we are all tall-in the ‘60s that meant Mom sewed our clothes & in the 70s I was sewing my own. She taught me everything. I kept sewing through the 80s & 90s-for me and then my kids. More kids meant more sewing-and quilting! I love fashion art, sewing, pattens-you are one lucky duck! Thanks for sharing this!!

Thank you for the trip down memory lane! My mom was a fantastic seamstress and most of my clothing while growing up was sewn by her, even including my wedding dress. Many nights I would fall asleep to the sound of the sewing machine and in the morning woke to find a new outfit hanging on my bedroom door. I can remember spending hours in the fabric store with my mom, looking through the pattern books, fabrics & notions.

I worked at "So-Fro Fabrics" it is now "Joann's". I love looking at old patterns. My mom made all of our clothes. She also wanted all of us 4 girls to have dance lessons. She made all the costumes for the whole dance school in exchange for our lessons. As soon as we were old enough to sew on a sequin we did. Good memories. Thank you Hugs and blessings to you

When I was a kid, my british English teacher taught me to sew and I would later learn to download from the internet actual patterns that were made for Barbies and other american dolls. Those patterns were from these brands that you are showing here. In those years there were no torrents or download programs, the old patterns were lovingly scanned by ladies and then shared in zip files in Yahoo Groups that you got by email. I joined several of these groups and have literally hundreds of these zip files stashed away in a hardrive. I have not thought of these, nor all the barbie clothes I made and still keep in a box at my mothers house, for years. Thanks Lindsay. Vintage Doll clothes... I think I need to find that hardrive and make available all those gorgeous patterns to other people, its a pity they would just cease to exist. Those Yahoo groups died years ago, I have no clue where those communities went. I remember they had clothes also for other gorgeous american dolls, like Barbie but the shapes were more natural and with more mobility. Ok found it after some wikisearching, I believe it was Tyler Wentworth and Gene Marshall. Wondering if other people would love to have these patterns as I loved to get them myself back in the day.

I do very part-time vintage reselling along with art 🖼 👩‍🎨and have picked up and sold vintage sewing patterns before. But it is so fun just going through them plus I do sew myself, but haven't done much serious sewing 🧵 for a long time. I must set aside some time to do it. I have lots of great fabric and patterns just sitting there waiting ☹️for me. And I guess Butterick was a bit more challenging. But I was brave back in the day and if I liked the look, I would go for it. I even made a couple of Easy Vogue patterns (a long time ago.) In fact, I made some elastic waisted cropped pants 👖 with pockets that I loved and made in 2 different 100% cotton fabrics. I loved them so much that I practically wore them out. This pattern was/is (I still have it) pretty classic and with "some" adjustments in the waist & hips 😯I could still use it again. 👍

Did you hear me scream? I had the midriff top and elephant bell bottoms pattern. I made the top out of dark blue fabric with paisley print. Absolutely loved it! I used to wear it to school over a black long sleeved Danskin leotard. That would have been mid 1970s. The pants didn't go with the top I made, but I did them in some gold and pale copen blue fabric mom had a partial bolt of. I think it was supposed to be for curtains, but I grabbed it. The baby patterns are cute. I remember making sacques (bags) for my kids out of yellow flannel and using floral flannel for the sleeves. They were so nice when they were tiny babies. Fun haul and I like all the choices you saved. I'd probably make the cats, too. Thanks for sharing!

Seeing those clothes reminded me of my youth! I can totally see you in that sundress and top with the flutter sleeves ~ very cute! The mens and boys outfits were so dated. I love how you started speaking in '70's talk ~ so "groovy" and the pattern guys were saying, "Hello, ladies!" in their best come-on voice! I'm so glad those fashions are behind us for now, but you know they'll eventually be popular again!

I just inherited my MiL's pattern collection and sewing kit. She made thorough use of the $1 pattern sales of the early 2000's. So many duplicates. Oy! Her earlier stuff included lots of 80's shirt dresses, drop waist or blouson dresses (barf!) and power suits (which aren't too bad with a little shoulder minimization), some 70's embroidered clothing (that must have been a thing), some Stretch-N-Sew, lots of sailor collared ensembles (her Navy WAVE days coming out), and a ton of specialty square dance patterns. Most I will pass along to charity but it has been interesting seeing where our tastes intersected.

Vogue are typically the most difficult patterns, but also give you the most style and design. Butterick is a division of Vogue. Not as difficult but still some nice design. For some reason McCall's patterns never fit me well so I stayed away from them. Simplicity patterns are good basic patterns. Not too difficult and usually good value for your money.
I used to sew all my clothes and became pretty good at it. Of the patterns I still have saved, I'd say 95% are Vogue. It I was going to spend the time and money I wanted it to look great!
You can definitely swap sleeves around in patterns. Used to do that all the time.

I remember that Simplicity pattern with the wide legged white pants. I used to sew my own clothes when I was a teenager in the 70’s. And I used to make clothes just like that. I have a picture of me and my best friend standing together out in the yard and I was wearing a tie in front half top that looked exactly like that. I was taking a clothing design course at the local community college part of the day during school and she was teaching us how to custom fit clothes. I was tall so my pants never fit but after I got in that class the first thing I heading for was a white pair of white legged pants with a wide waistband. They fit like no other and I wore them all the time.

Not all Vogue were difficult. I made a dress for my daughter from a Vogue pattern when she was 4 or 5 years old. It had an elastic empire waist and puff sleeves with elastic. It had a separate pinafore. I made the dress out of an ultramarine blue velveteen and the pinafore from white eyelet. It was a floor length long dress in the beginning, but she was able to wear it for years because of the elastic and the design. It became progressively shorter, but still looked great. That was probably the favorite outfit that I ever made and it was easy. That was mid to late 70’s. I wish I had kept that pattern. Not everything I made turned out so well!😂 It was fun watching you look through the patterns. I remember sitting at the counter perusing the pattern books from the time I was 14 years old and took home ec. I even made appliquéd overalls for my son when he was a toddler. I quit sewing when most clothing was made outside the country and became cheaper than making at home. It’s also harder to find quality fabric now. Thanks for sharing your haul.

I love looking at your patterns, and hearing your reactions. Butterick is my very favorite patterns, because they more detailed. I’ve been sewing for a long time. The sizes are different now, so watch the measurements. Misses was even sizes and juniors were odd sizes. The pattern backs will also have dates on them. The reason there’s no envelopes is because when stores were getting rid of them, they had to take them out and destroy the envelopes. Most likely someone rescued them before they hit the dumpster.

I think they, the store, sent the envelope, or at least part of it back for credit, or so they wouldn't get charged for them. I know book stores would tear off the front cover of paperbacks and send it back to the publisher and trash the book, back 30 plus years ago. I "rescued" quite a few good reads. ☺️

You are probably right. I remember back in the 60’s and 70’s when the cashier would cut part of the flap off and keep it. I’m sure it was so they would know what to reorder.

I used to wear dresses more often and even make dresses 👗 more often. But since I'm "retired" from regular work, my clothing has gotten so much more casual...pants, shorts, leggings. But dresses & skirts can be so comfortable and cool 😎 for the summertime and I've kinda forgotten that.

Wow what a find. I used to sew a lot and made a lot of clothes for my kids and myself in the 60s and 70s. Recognize a lot of those patterns. The little boy one with the jacket and short pants I made for my son one Easter. I even made a pair of knit pants for my husband one year. Give thanks for home-ec classes. Lol. Thanks for sharing. Would love to see them if you make any. Take care. Hugs

I can see the loose pattern pieces becoming starter for kindling in your fire pit! My mom sewed all the time, but wouldn't use Butterich patterns because they were too labor intensive. We used blanket sleepers for our kids back in the 70's. Our old house was drafty! Great video. See, I watch any video you make.

What a fun find. I love vintage patterns (even though I don't have time to sew them). My favorites tend to be Vogue patterns. I generally like their styles better/more interesting. I find I like the more complicated/technical pattern brands better. I find the 'process' of construction enjoyable, and all the fiddly bits give me a better fit.... But I will agree that some brands are definitely easier/simpler to sew than others. I do like Butterwick patterns and have no problems with them. The main brand I tend to be disappointing with is Simplicity. The picture is always so much better that what I end up with 😂..... though it might be my sewing skills/style. 😉Thanks for sharing!!

How fun! I sewed a butterick pattern dress in high school home economics class too, and have bad memories of ripping it out so many times. My home ec teacher was tough and the whole experience was traumatic 🫣 If I sew now I always look for the super easy patterns.

My mother used to sew when I was a kid so I recognize some of the patterns in your stash. Butterick, Simplicity, McCall's and Vogue, she had all of them. I made the pants from Simplicity pattern 5695 and they were great. Thanks for the memories.❤️❤️❤️

I definitely had some of those patterns! The tops with the princess seams and flutter sleeves pattern was a favorite! The shapeless top with the square yoke and square neck was a big trend when I started High School in 1972. Trendy but not flattering!

In Austin Texas there is a thrift store where old patterns are 20 for $1.00! Many of them have never been used. The envelpoes are great for paper dolls and all kinds of collage!

My Mom used to sew way back in the 70's, until the material started to get expensive, then after me moved we throw them all out, now I wish we saved them just for the cover art. i would use them for college.

Lindsay, I made those pants when I was in high school (7:30). Got them done just in time for the big dance in the big City of Garden City, KS. Tim Holtz may be interested in the ones you don't want to keep? I am the keeper of all the old pictures of relatives back to the 1900 and post cards and even a set of paper dolls. When I was young mom would get the McCalls magazine and it always had Betsy McCall paperdoll cut out my sister and I would fight over them.

I always found Simplicity and McCall and Jiffy were always the easiest. I avoided Butterick like the plague. I found them to be more fitted and more detailed. They probably would have made better garments, but I couldn’t bring myself to try. Happy sewing.

I mostly made pillows and curtains. No zippers.
