As a fellow drummer, I swear this is the best live "duo" drumming I have ever seen in my entire life. They aren't just playing drums together, they are connected at the hip & making love together with music. It's absolutely beautiful to behold.
After watching this dazzling display of percussive brilliance some people have the audacity to believe the utter nonsense that Neil Peart is the GOAT😂😂😂.
I saw Billy Cobham, "in clinic," early 1980's, sponsored by Tama and Nalli's Music Annex, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He played a closed roll, standing in front of a single snare drum, and his sticks were coming up, off of the head of the snare drum, at least 18", as if he were playing an "open" roll. I still marvel at the memory of seeing that, to this DAY... lol
Fantastic duel between two fab drummers here and I am only 7 mins in so far! Louie seems more inventive whereas Billy seems to repeat himself quite a bit. Great intensive playing and also involving the band in this.
Unbelievable. I had the pleasure of meeting Louie in 1993 and standing 2 feet behind him while he was rehearsing with the San Diego Mesa College Jazz band for a concert. His economy of movement, power, feel, and ability to kick a big band in the ass was incredible. Pretty respectable for him to do a duet with Billy Cobham at the height of HIS power. Thanks for posting.
I see Dean Brown on guitar. So this is probably from the early 80's. IMO, the best band Cobham ever played with after Mahavishnu. It was Dean Brown (g), Tim Landers (b), Gil Goldstein (K).
Ok, I'm 64 years old and the first time I heard Louie Bellson was on an album called A Pearl For Louie when I was studying drums with Sam Ulano. Fast forward to 1971 and I heard Mahavishnu ( I started playing guitar in '68 ) and the first thing I said to myself was this drummer sounds like Louie Bellson. I am so happy to see this for the first time after all these years!
I'm guessing this was done in Europe and I, for one, am happy for the absence of whoops and hollers and applause interruppting this great performance, as would have happened had it been done in the States.
Nice to see just what can be done WITHOUT the traditional jazz grip. Cobhams hands and FEET are just so incredibly fast. So you won't see the incredible stick technique off the snare like with Bellson but with Cobham incredible natural speed, he really doesn't need it; he's not traditional jazz anyway- and each of those 2 clearly enjoyed watching and listening as the other played. Great mutual respect, there.
I love Billy. Met him once and gave him a present. It actually was for me but since I had a chance to meet him I gave it to him. He’s an awsome drummer. Not the warmest guy I have ever met but great at drums. Anyway Buddy Rich will always be the best to me. His crossover, both overhand and underhand was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen any drummer do. And it was for a reason. Not just hey look at this. Possibly his martial arts helped with that but he gets me everytime. Not just that. His way of getting tone out of each kit and drum as well as cymbals. This is fantastic but I think or Buddy everytime I see an awsome drummer! Just got to me that much! Billy played the style I’d listened to more as far as music. Buddy though. Man. The Legend for a reason!
Louie has much better hand control and seldom hits a stick or misses a beat while Cobham's single stroke assault attack style is more like Animal from the Muppets.
Louie did a lot of T.V. , Movie Tracks,He could do it all.Consequently made a Nice Living when many, regardless how good didn't.Thats the Adult approach!!!
Everybody! This is a duo, not a "drum battle."
Exactly
seen this show live at the percussive arts society weekend in Winnipeg in very late 70's i do believe
Yep. Amazing.
Cobhams speed and power is outrageous
Louie was s CLASS ACT in EVERY WAY!!!!

Got to see Louie play with Oscar Peterson in Holland in the late 70’s it was all so natural to him🇮🇪
Prodigy
Bellson wasn't too shabby ,but he represented an older genre ..
Cobham was just a F-king powerhouse .!
Both great, Billy's modern-day, powerful, and complex drumming is incredible!
They really enjoyed themselves.
You can see they both respected and admired each other ..
After watching this dazzling display of percussive brilliance some people have the audacity to believe the utter nonsense that Neil Peart is the GOAT😂😂😂.
These two legends playing off each other so nicely: Cobham sight reading and kicking butt, Bellson swingin in a v neck sweater.
Amazing. Bellson always made it seem effortless.
Now this what a proper drum battle should sound like

Two masters having fun. Just awesome and so inspiring!
SOOOOOO AWESOME! You could tell Billy loved Henry. What a duo!

Both amazing.....Cobham is a beast!
Refreshing to see George Harrison doing a big band funk session!
Both simply marvelous and great. Giant talent and gentlemen. Class. Whew! What a workout!
Two amazing drummers.
Two of the best and my favorites
Mind Boggling they are, plus I was lucky enough to meet hang out with both of them! 🤩💥💥

Man I wish I was in there miyin it up with these guys!
Louie is a beast and underrated.
Lol underrated? The grandfather of double bass drumming? He's up there with Rich and Krupa.
He not underrated …and love by so many jazzers 😮
Just 1 word : WOWWWW !!!!! How I enjoyend the way they enjoyed themselfes !!
Thanks for posting enjoyed the meeting of two eras drum styles, If you like drum solos you'll love this,
fascinatingly good and sooooooo musical!!
I've accused Louie of playing the same solo for the last 50 years, but I have to say, he seems really inspired here.
From 2:24 to 2:40 intresting later became boring Cobham starting to be agressive
I think Bellson sounds far more musical in this context. Cobham is just too aggressive and LOUD. Where are the soft touches?
Agree with you.
after 9:10 are extremely soft touches.

Super, love it! Thanks for posting
Louie wearing a sweater is nice and dry while Billy is sweating like crazy with a short sleeved shirt on.

😊😊😊😊😊love bbig band swing
wildly different players with wildly different drum setups, yet I love when they copy each other's licks!!!!
What a gem!

Its a choice, Cobham master the jazz grip in both hands, righty or lefty..
In horace silver in 60's he played jazz grip
If I am not mistaken was also performed at cal state northridge I remember this performance and practice sessions held at the campus
Thank you for this anthology moment !!
held his own and then some.
Awesome :)
This is Great!!
awesome
Nice!

How has the comment sat here, this long, BEGGING EVERYONE to ask, "What was the present you gave him?"?.

👍👍👍

Loved this but cobham just repeats the same fills over and over! Would like to see him on a smaller kit like Bellsons!
Lol. Young people who think that today's modern drummers are the last Coca Cola of the desert, should watch these videos and those of Buddy Rich...
Billy is not human.
Brecker bros! Rick Laird?
Wow where is this from?
Jesus Christ
He was watching in the audience that night. 🤷🏻♂️😅🥁
