A large feral dog tried to bite my hand and my whippet went berserk. His inner wolf came out and he attacked him. My whip was on a lead so I could pull him back but the other dog retreated (a lab/mastiff cross). I never expected that but they are fast and agile so can handle themselves if the situation requires. He also bushwhacked a roe deer more than twice his size.
Always warm your dogs muscles up before running.. especially if it's cold or on a surface like sand.. or they could break a bone... ask me how I know 😏. Merlin my whippet ran after a ball on a cold day and as he turned to run back.. his tendon snapped a small bone in his front wrist area. I blame myself for not warming his muscles up first with a walk. It might not be something people think about but I see it as essential now... Hope this helps 🙏🐾
My whippet it timid but hard as nails my vet has commented nothing seems to hurt her , and rough playing is her favourite thing second of course to running at warp speed .
I'm an Italian Greyhound owner, and I have found sighthounds only want to play with sighthounds. The size of the sighthound doesn't matter. All that rough-and-tumble nonsense is just that nonsense. I've had "never a mean bone in his body" golden retrievers attack my Iggy. Sighthounds don't give off the right vibe, and other breeds of dogs don't understand, so they attack. With new owners who long to walk with their sighthound off-leash, I say beware. For every successfully trained off-leash sighthound, there are 5 dead sighthounds because their prey drive kicked in, and they died of hypothermia or been run over by a car.
I think dogs were domesticated from at least three species of wild canines, with the sighthounds being one of them, originating in northern Africa and the Middle East. There are ancient hieroglyphs of sighthounds. Quite possibly the oldest breed. I have also observed that not all dogs mix well with sighthounds, and that sighthounds prefer other sighthounds.
Love all of these traits and it’s why whippets are my favourite breed. I have a rescue mongrel, we did a DNA test on him and he has about 25% whippet, some collie and shepherd make up the rest but honestly, most of his traits are predominantly whippet. If I ever have another dog it’ll 100% be a whippet.
My whippet is a good guard dog if an unknown person arrives He gets on well with the cat ( they grew up together) they play fight- the cat always rules
I think if you’re someone who is super lazy re brushing a dog’s teeth... Whippets aren’t the breed for you. Because of their long, elegant snouts they’re prone to getting serious dental issues. There are products out there that make the brush experience easier though-Maxiguard has been very effective for my Whippet.
@@omnipresent1215 I find it's very effective for my Whippet's teeth, but for extra clarification I use the Maxiguard gel, and scrub my pup's teeth with a toothbrush when using the product. Some people simply apply the gel with a finger onto the back teeth, and don't bother scrubbing with a toothbrush, but I like getting her teeth extra clean with a brush. She's had her teeth brushed ever since she was little, so I'd say she approves b/c she's used to having it applied as part of her night time routine. I think dog's who are used to getting chicken/beef flavoured toothpaste would need time to get used to the very specific taste of Maxiguard.
Curious how much Freddie weighs? I think my 8 month old male is about 40 pounds already!! I almost named mine Freddie as well, Freddie Mercury. But I ended up going with Dash instead. Thanks for all of the great information!
Thanks for the message :) Freddie is 34lbs at his heaviest. Without knowing how tall your whippet is, I’d say yours is overweight. Especially at only 8 months. For your information. Freddie is 21.5’’ to the shoulder and is 5 years old. Please don’t take offence to this! 😅 but might be worth measuring your Whippet to ensure you’re not overfeeding.
I think if you are wanting a dog that is going to excel in obedience; a Whippet is not for you. They are like cats and will only do what they want to do. They can be really slow to learn (we are talking 2 month to teach my boy "down") and may not want to listen when there is something better going on...like poop in the grass to sniff. Don't expect to have a dog that is wanting to work for you and do what you say; because you won't get that. You have to work hard to get them to be motivated enough to do as you say. Positive Reinforcement is a must with Whippets.
Great comment. I'm hoping to get one in 2024 sometime. May I ask... aside from 'good boy' etc do you use any particular type of 'treats' to effect said 'positive reinforcement'... just 'anything' or a more 'dedicated treat' type of thing?
I'm super interested in a Whippet. I have a fully fenced yard. The fence is about 4 1/2 feet (1.4 meters). I have raised Weimaraners and Golden retrievers in that yard and the dogs have never jumped the fence. I know Whippets can jump anything but will they constantly jump the fence? I get mixed answers. 😊
@@freddiethewhippett Thanks for the reply. After doing all this research I'm realizing that you have to train no jumping at an early age. I'm across the pond in NY state and some breeders told me they won't even consider selling me a dog with that fence. While others say it's not an issue if you train them from when they're young. It's actually pretty hard to find Whippets over here. Thanks for the info and Merry Christmas to you and Freddie.
@@Popper_ Also the given height of the fence will be relative, but gathering you are well aware of this. Have you. been able to get one as yet? I'm hoping to get one sometime in 2024.
@@omnipresent1215 Yes, we found a 6-month-old rescue in February. His name is Carl and he is an amazing dog. He chases squirrels but would never attempt to jump the fence. Best of luck getting yours! He is a very relaxed dog besides a daily zoomie or 2.
From Sweden here. The cold climate is really not an issue if you have good clothes for your whippet. Our girl actually loves playing in the snow even when it’s quite cold. But she really hates when it’s just a few degrees above zero and it’s raining. She can just put on the brakes and refuse to walk. So I agree it’s not a dog for crazy outdoor adventures. Anyways a good video. I could mention that they are picky with food.
I’m glad to hear this 😌 unfortunately for any rescue, or adopted pets with pray drive you can always run into problems. It’s always best to be on the cautious side! Freddie here would love to tuck into anything small and fluffy 🤣

Don’t get a whippet if you like to eat your food in peace either at the table or on your knee. Those long snouts are perfect for plate browsing.

Ah, yes, the "what's in it for me" attitude. Someone asked me when I would be done training my Italian Greyhound, and I answered, the day he dies.
