Have you got any favourite common items with no statistical effects that have some awesome niche uses? They're my favourite kind of magic item and I wonder if you know any that stick out to you, homebrew included.
I mostly play Adventurer League which restricts the types and number of magical items in the game. You get Treasure Points instead and unlock the items you do find in order to spend your points on them. (That's for people not playing AL) Unless you find an actual item, it remains locked to you. So you end up spending your treasure points on the few "evergreen" items which are always unlocked. +1 weapons, bags of holding, driftglobes, and not a whole lot else. But one gem is the slippers of spider climbing. Like the second level spell, it allows you to climb walls and ceilings. Unlike the spell, you don't have to concentrate on the effect. Perfect for every character I've played. By the time I hit tier 2, I make sure to get a pair. Just so useful. (to quote the bard)

Not magical. Discount Larry's went out of business when WBL died. People should stop trying to revive the 3x attitude towards magic items.
For a Warlock the Rod Pact of the Keeper is amazing and +1 version is uncommon!
I would be interested in mundane or common but incredibly useful items, those with a multitude of applications for the clever (well-informed) player.

Because the NPCs will use these items? Or because the first-time DM is typically Monty Haul?
