      Sometimes I go to DB's channel page and search for "unconventional" and when I can't find anything new, I sometimes try to find other authors doing it. I guess my point is, @Drow Bard: keep these up!!!

    I've been playing around with the idea of a Shaman-like Bard-barian build similar to your Barbarian/Warlock.
    Ancestral Guardian 6+ / Lore Bard 3+, gives the sense of a revered storyteller in the tribe who fights alongside the other warriors and provides a connection to the past; who bolsters the deeds and capabilities of their allies and preserves the memory of their victories. If the Shaman takes Athletics as one of their Expertise skills, they can also control the battlefield by grappling their foes, shoving them to the ground, and holding them there for their allies to wail on or drag them around to wherever most convenient. Even while raging, these Bard-barians can use Cutting Words to mock or intimidate their enemies into missing their allies.
    Between battles, the spells of the Lore Bard can be used to help the party recover, as well as using the Song of Rest and possibly using the Inspiring Leader feat to bolster the hit point pool of the entire party. Between Jack of All Trades and the additional 3 skills gained from the College of Lore, this character would have at least 8 skills to draw upon, two of which have double the proficiency.

      @@nicholas3141 you need at least 3 paladin and 2 wizard. Paladin gives cool abjurations+armor of agathys which has synergy with abjurer wizard. I wanna say 6 in each class helps the build take off more. More or less wizard for preference and arcane ward+slots for smite.

    I have an unconventional Barbarian(4+)/Monk(7+). I don't have a great name for it but the way of Channeled Fury could work.
    It's uses a few levels of Barbarian below level 10 to really boost the damage and toughness of a Monk.
    Rage: The Rage damage bonus applies to unarmed strikes which are a kind of melee weapon attack (PHB, pg. 195) which really adds up given the number of attacks monks make. The resistances are especially great at reinforcing the Monk's glass canon.
    Martial Arts: While martial arts does require you to forgo the biggest weapons, the extra unarmed strike does generally do more damage than a bigger weapon.
    Flurry of Blows: This can be done while raging for insane damage!
    Reckless Attack: Great for getting all of your attacks to hit to ensure that damage.
    Danger Sense: Even if you start as a Barbarian you keep some good dex saves. Works doubly well with evasion.
    Stunning Strike: Can be used with the greataxe, and with the Tasha's optional features can lead to keeping that extra punch, though wielding the greataxe does weaken that extra punch.
    Stillness of Mind: The Barbarian's biggest weakness gets solved somewhat.
    Unarmoured Movement: Helps grappling really work out by letting drag enemies farther, works well with Step of the Wind and Way of the Drunken Master's flurry of blows bonus.
    Feats. that could be good aren't too many but mobile helps with grappling and Polearm Master can really help you interfere with enemy turns with stunning strike.
    Personally I'd play a Half-orc for the extra strength and durability then take the Orcish Fury Racial feat. so while I use a greataxe as I'm setting up rage I could do a really big blow to kick things off and possibly take things down when I drop to one hit point. This also synergizes with Stunning Strike because it let's you interfere with an enemies turn if you hit them from the Orcish Fury attack and they fail the save.
    If the Bard wants to use this for an unconventional Monk video I will not complain. It'd be neat to see what flavour he can infuse this with.

    Spirit Tamer Barbarian reminds me a bit of the O.G. Barbarian (the historical sort, that drew strength from animal spirits, drugs, or raw adrenaline - like that one guy who defended a bridge on his own).

  • @rocksnrolls
    @rocksnrolls 4 года назад

    If you want one of the scariest things for a DM to have to deal with. I'd suggest Moon druid mostly for wildshaping and spells that can be used outside of rage for when you can't get up close and personal. And at least 3 levels of one of 2 barbarian subclasses.
    1.Ancestral guardian: makes you insanely great at drawing agro from enemies. Because they have disadvantage against attacks that aren't against you. It's an amazing tank, and makes the party as a whole stronger. Imagine a towering white lion roaring while blue spectral energy issues from its mouth and swirling around allies, making them harder to hit.
    2. Totem warrior (bear): You are damn near unkillable. You can wild shape, making any damage that happens to the animal, not harm you (unless it bleeds over). And then rage. Bear totem barbarians take half damage from all damage, except psychic damage. So you essentially have twice the hit points unless you're dealing with the rare psychic damage. You become a huge meat wall, making yourself better. You turn into a massive bear, and get hit with an arrow, that barely touches your health.

  • @curaxu
    @curaxu 3 года назад

    Another unconventional one is a barbarian that is knowledgable in the arcane. Build wise war wizard 2 allows the barbarian to boost their ac or saving throw. Sure they cant cast spells then, but you are raging anyway. It adds some small utility spells as well, and is great fun . I once played this conczpt as a mage that was inventing his own, self buff spell, leading to me ´casting rage´ - great fun i tell you :)

    It would be nice to do these builds like Treantmonk does his on his channel when covering 5E builds: break down each level (at first) and then go by two levels, and do an analysis of early, mid, and high tier. Since all these abilities won't be available until the very end.

    Great thoughts.. I like things outside the box. I am new to dnd. I was thinking a bugbear with of thief and fighter pole arm with feat. extra reach and surprise damage from race bonus. The new shield master class with cleric or battle master class.. the dog= thematic. lastly a Artificer Artillarist/Wizard since the both use Int. I would love to see one of these builds shown done. being new I still don't get the optimum levels in each.

    My new unconventional build is what i call the Jack The ripper build, a barbarian with the charlatain background (or criminal if you aren't a varient human) with these stats:
    STR: 8
    DEX: 16
    CON: 14
    INT: 14
    WIS: 10
    CHA: 12
    He doesn't wear any armor to keep his gentleman style, his main weapon is a rapier and he throws daggers when his targets are running, i recomend taking the mobile feat to make things like chasing and running away easier.
    I'm thinking about multiclassing some levels in rogue and take the uncanny dodge to take 1/4 the damage.

    I'm currently playing a dual wielding dwarven bear totem barbarian 5 levels and then picking up 3 levels of rune knight fighter so he can use his runes to lock down enemies with chains and redirect enemy damage to himself. Will also probably pick up grappler so when he enlarges he can grapple a huge creature. The idea is that he is a giant hunter/ party tank.

    I really like these unconventional builds that think outside the box and create more unique character concepts than the base subclasses allow. I have an AL legal character I love to play that will eventually be 11 levels of Fiend Warlock and 5 levels of Bear Totem Barbarian. I can cast Armor of Agathys at 5th level without concentration, giving me 25 temp HP, which as a Bearbarian is essentially 50 temp HP and every time I get hit in melee I deal 25 cold dmg until my "50" temp HP are gone. And when they do run out and I eventually kill something I just get more temp HP (Warlock level+Cha) through Dark One's Blessing. With Extra Attack, warlock Pact Weapon Invocations, and Eldritch Blast to fall back on when I can't Rage and get in melee, I deal respectable damage, have some warlock tricks up my sleeve, and am VERY hard to kill!

    My favorite character right now is a Barbarian. He has the barest minimum Str (14). Int 16, Wis 11, Con 18, Dex 17. He's a Human Variant with the Acolyte background. Zealot. He's a former monk (Western kind, not Asian kind) who was driven a bit loopy when his monestary was burnt to the ground. With a shield, he's at AC 19, and with the Tough feat, he has an immense number of HP.
    He soaks up damage, but also acts as a historian and pseudo religious nutter.

    My unconventional barb though I guess it probably leans more on monk is Totem Barbarian with Way of the Long Death Monk and being a Minotaur for some awesome flurry of horns. You are super tanky and the extra unarmed attacks can be made with your horns which will start off stronger than your unarmed attacks and then scale past them. That first point making the multiclass easier on you so the slower unarmed die isn't that harsh early.

    • @nicholas3141

    • @afrosamurai3847
      @afrosamurai3847 4 года назад

      @@nicholas3141 Not really while yes the point is wisdom helps with the multiclass you can still get a +3 in both Str and Con with Minotaur and you start with a stronger unarmed attack in your 1d6 horns compared to the 1d4 Tortle's have. There's an argument for the early AC edge but the raw bulk of the build doesn't really care about actually taking the hits and if you plan on using reckless for your unarmed attacks, which is very in theme for a rampaging bull AC becomes kinda moot. Just my thoughts though of course you can do whatever fits your character idea more.

    Next 2 levels: Barbarian
    Sneak Attack + Reckless Attack = shorts word that does more damage than a great sword
    All the skills you need
    From there, maybe a few levels of Fighter later, but mostly go Rogue thereafter.
    I give you ... R.E. Howard's Conan of Cimmeria.

      John Stuart Keller what about extra attack?

    • @johnstuartkeller5244
      @johnstuartkeller5244 4 года назад

      @@nicholas3141 The additional Sneak Attack damage makes up for it, as can the optional off-hand weapon. As the character progresses, 5 or 6 levels of Fighter is appropriate, but this is the basis, as I see it, of a proper Conan build. I've played him in what I thought was a Low Magic/ Sword and Sorcery game (it later became one,) and he held his own very well, both as a team-player and a toe-to-toe terror. Good scout, good fighter, booby trap expert, with room to grow.
      Depending on how the game goes, the character I am playing may get those Fighter levels, but there is little more he needs from the Barbarian class. Despite this, he is easily played as the quentessential S&S barbarian.
      And only needing 2 levels of Barbarian makes this a rather unconventional Barbarian build, I think.

    I am in complete agreement about players defaulting to playing "Dumb Barbarians". Barbarians were not stupid to begin with, it is a misconception and bad propaganda. A Stereotype that stuck with the Barbarian title throughout the ages.
    I have always wanted to play a Smart Barbarian, but in order to play it the way I want I would basically need 18s in all stats, and then players complain, and DMs complain, and I don't see why I can't play a character that is 20 in all stats. There HAS to be at least 1 person that possesses exceptional abilities in all stats born every thousand years, so why not my character? And NO. Just because "I" am playing a character that has all 20s, doesn't mean that EVERYONE at the table should get that privilege, since then this character wouldn't be the unique monstrosity that it is truly meant to be.
    The reason I want to play this character is because I AM this character to some extent. I have exceptionally high stats in knowledge, wisdom, intelligence, constitution, dexterity, and strength, and I want to play a character that is more in line with who I am.
