You can also pick the wood shavings from the container and use the pencil scraps with water and paint. If you put your wet brush into the shavings, even mixed colors then put them on wet paper you get nice color mixes, patterns and texture markings.
One last comment, you aren't alone in trying to get the makers of these books to use either a watercolor paper or at the very least a mixed media paper so that we could use things like watercolor on the pages! I hope that someone will listen soon and do a book like that! Also, having one image per page (nothing in the back side) so we don't have to worry if the color bleeds through! Lastly, I wanted to tell you that I use my watercolor pencils many times by putting the wet brush to the tip of the dry pencil and using the color on the brush to paint. I find I get more control and use less of my pencil than the wet tip to paper or wet paper option you showed. Just another option for you if you'd like to try it. Thanks for doing this videos, I have learned a ton (and spent way too much because you keep making me want more supplies. . . Lol!).
Kristine Harkin, to help with the moisture i always save all my silica gel packs (especially the plastic moisture guards in pill bottles) and i store all my watercolors and any metal tools i dont want to rust in an airtight container and throw in a few packs. I also do have a frigidaire dehumidifier in my art room. Art supplies are expensive so its worth it. Keeps my paper from loosing quality and even helps projects dry!
This is your best video so far. The fact that you have no art training shows your subscribers that we can all do this. Very nice job on the apple. With colored pencil painting the advice is to start with still lifes. Watercolor artists will use watercolor pencils to do their initial sketching.
+Janet O'Dell thank you so much! That's great to know! I love how alive water makes everything and really want to talk a watercolor art class. It's so much fun! I want to get some water color tubes or half pans but I'm scared! Lol.
thank you i know people will say its overkill to buy artist grade items for colouring books i am not one of them when i find something i like like to do that calms my brain down when at night i am climbing the walls lol i dont want normal everyday colouring pencils i want to learn how to use what i get and i must admit that i would have never ever thought of going further like you i am finding myself wanting to learn and am now having art lessons from a friend who is shocked as i have always admired her for her painting skills that i want to learn i am know on you tube permanently looking up techniques on how to use them so far i have bought the Inktence pencils and blocks full set of each and am now saving for the Faber Castell range of watercolour and and soft pencils my freind still cant believe that this all started with an adults colouring book lol thank you for the vids i know now that i am not alone in that when i do something i do it to the fullest oh and i have started doing bible journaling and all because of an adults colouring book
I got the 120 set for my birthday and I have also the 120 set of Polychromos and I have been using them together - I did not know these dried permanently thank you very much when they’re dry because then when they’re still damp they are movable as far as I have found out but I too like you am pencil saver and very cautious with my very expensive pencils. This is the second video of yours that I have learned so much from the first one was one on intense and I think that you’re very knowledgeable and what do you have discovered or things that I like to discover and I thank you very much for that and I will continue to watch your channel I know you got this year’s ago and I’m sure you have gotten new sets forsince then - I know of a woman on RUclips called bunny designs who makes watercolor palettes on paper and make sure on the water color“travel books” - I love to learn new things every day thank you very much again - and don’t knock yourself I couldn’t draw that Apple even if I watch the RUclips video to teach me how ha ha Ha ha ha
Great video! I just got my 120 set today and am so excited to start using them! I also have the 120 set of Polychromos so the two together are going to bed wonderful! I'm so glad I found this tutorial. 😊
+YeshuasBride +ColoringKaria do you recommend having both sets? I'm trying to understand if I get the watercolour set, if it works as just a pencil set. As far as I can tell, people get both sets, but I'm trying to save $$. Thank you!
Most people do have both but you don't need both. I would look at which you plan to do more dry or water. If you plan do mainly watercolor you can get this set and use it as a dry pencil when needed. But if you plan to mainly do dry work get the polychromos and add a less expensive set of watercolor pencil. That's what I would do anyway.
I have had my watercolor pencils for several months but have not used them. Your video was very good for a beginner providing some ideas. I agree....it would be nice for adult coloring books paper be able to handle watercolor pencils.
i use faber castell art grip pencils my pencils never touch the paper i use a water color brush straight from the tip of the pencils straight to the painting i am doing i also use them in conjunction with other water color mediums nice video by the way well put together i enjoyed it
I'm an artist but I still find your videos really informative, you go through all the things I would want to know about the pencils, thank you for the demonstration/review. Also your first art is really good I'd encourage you to keep going n_n
This is helpful! I received the set of 60 a few months ago, and I just opened a d attempted to use them today. Oh boyeeee, what a nightmare that was. I was like I'm going to stick to graphite and regular color pencils. But after watching this,, I will try again using the info you provided.
Karia, Thank you so much for an excellent review!!! I also received both sets for my birthday. Your IG posts are gorgeous!! Great info!! I'm testing them in the Secret Garden coloring book as well as Strathmore 400 WC and the Fluid WC paper.
Karia, Another wonderful review! As you know I am a pencil (and pen) snob and hoarder, and I don't have these, although I think you have just convinced me I "need" them 😉. I love the Faber Castell line (including the Gelatos, Pitt Artist Pens and Big Brush pens) and how the colors are the same throughout the lines. It really does make it easy to create and to add effects as you said. I wasn't aware that these pencils were permanent when wet, until now the only pencils I knew I'd that were are the Inktense, but they are actually ink, not watercolor. I didn't realize there was a watercolor that would be permanent, all I know move again or reactivate when wet, so that was fascinating to learn. I am SO impressed with the apple you drew and shaded, you may not have taken any art classes, but you obviously have talent and will continue to grow that talent as you move on. Thank you for another wonderful video, I always look forward to seeing you on my feed and watching a new video!
+Maureen Hayes Thank you so much! Yep, I faber castell says they are permanent after drying and this is mostly true but you still have to proceed with caution and make sure you wet and dried *all* the pigment. but it is useful for sure. the faber castell video talks about it. ruclips.net/video/M9zYgc5Kv-8/видео.html
I’m not trying to discount your video tips, but Faber-Castell advised me to not wet the tip or you can ruin your pencil. I was told by my facebook group that wetting the pencil causes the lead to swell and the wood to soften.
+Michelle Herren If you watch the videos put out by Faber Castell their own artists do it in their videos 🤣🤣😂 I think if you don't let it dry completely before storing them you can run into problems but if you let it dry completely after use you should be fine.
No need to send emails. It could be that dipping the pencil in water will cause damage but using a brush to wet the tip will not. so in that case they are correct as their video only showed wetting the tip with a brush.
Michelle Herren I didn't even know that... Tks for sharing that! As I kept reading the other comments. I've only used my pencils twice. I tried em in a coloring book lightly. Then used an inexpensive brush pen set. Lightly brushed water. I absolutely loved it! I even showed my bf how beautiful it dried! Will Paint some things later. Now that I've gotten more supplies..
Not related to this video, but I was wondering if you could do a video on pastels and how to use them? What is the difference between chalk and oil pastels?
+Cassandra Fisher soft pastels are liftable, they feel like powder over the paper; in fact your painting will get smudged if you don't use a fixative, but they are very easy to blend with a cloth, your finger, a paper stomp, etc; if you have a good brand like rembrandt, they are very pigmented. There are mainly two types of soft pastel in the market, "chalk" or "hard" pastels, and "soft pastels". The first are cheaper, usually sold by student grade brands, and look like square bars; they are good to draw with or make hard lines and details but not to paint. The second type is the true "soft pastels" which requiere almost no pressure to apply and are round bars. Oil pastels are completly different, they dont lift ase easily, and you can use mineral spirits or other solvents to blend them with a brush; they are oil based (hence the name) so they feel a lot more like painting with oil. you can't mix both types of pastel. In both case you need paper with some tooth, or you won't be able to layer much.
I love these pencils, I mainly use the Derwent inktense pencils and the Albrecht Durers, mainly because of the color is so much brighter then others. The only problem I have found with them is, we had a cyclone on the east coast of Australia so the humidity was high and it was raining a lot, and I couldn't use either of the pencils they seemed to be wet, I put both sets in an airtight container till it fined up. I have asked for advice on if I did the right thing on a few other sites but got no reply.
+Kristine Harkin sorry for the delay. I did a lot of thinking and I think you did ok. I would treat it the same way I would a phone that was wet. Put it in some Tupperware with uncooked rice. Let the rice soak up all the water for a few days. Does that make sense?
Kristine Harkin of course I didn't think of adding rice, I was in a bit of a panic. I had just purchased a Lyra Rembrandt Aquarell's. And found they are a nice substitute, and very different to the Inktense and Faber Castell
Lol your awesome! "I reject and denounce myself for that" 😂cats can be pesky when doing art! No judgement! Thanks for this review and demo! I'm excited to use my pencils
I got this colours and I‘m really looking forward to using them. I watched this video although I‘m from Austria :) so please don‘t mind my Bad english 😬
Thanks for a very cool vid. I just got a 36 tin of Faber castell watercolour pencils but they aren't Albert durer ones but I'm going to try some of the things you've shown us so far I have only used them in Millie marottas tropical wonderland so I'm looking forward to using them with water. I dint know you could do that I thought watercolour pencil was the name because of the colours so it will be cool to see what happens when I add water to them 😊 thanks for a great vid x
wonderful review! I have the 36 set but I'm saving for the 120 I have to have every colour in the box..just like when I was a kid with cyaola crayons lol...I've subscribed to your channel!
Hi, Karia. This is really interesting. I use these pencils (I did splurge on the 120) and love them! However, for me, they are definitely NOT permanent. I just tested on something I colored a week ago and the color blended out as if I had just laid it down. So I wonder if the differentiating factor is that you are using cold press paper. I have a number of different types of paper but not cold press. Do you have any other heavy paper you could test on to see if it is permanent on those as well? Thanks!
+Barbara Snyder according to faber castell they are supposed to be permanent when dry, so i would check that you are wetting and dissolving all the pigment when you use them the first time, if not i would say there is a problem either with the paper, the moistuire in the air keeping it from being completely dry or even an issue with the pencils. Faber castell is very responsive, but anyway, here is a video faber castell made themselves and at the 37 sec mark they mention that they are supposed to be permanent when dry. I will do more tests on this when I do the actual review but I dont know when that will be and this way you can at least have an answer before then: ruclips.net/video/M9zYgc5Kv-8/видео.html
+ColoringKaria Hmmm.... Never thought about having to dissolve all the pigment. Not even sure how I would do that or know that I did that.... Any tips? I thought the Inktense were the only watercolor pencils that were permanent when dry, and they indeed are no matter how lightly I use them. But sometimes it would be useful to have the FC AD permanent as well, so any help you can provide would be great. I will also watch the FC video.
If you want to save as much pigment as possible I would sharpen these pencils by hand with a small box cutter and just be careful in removing the wood surrounding the lead only
Hi! I like your videos very much, and these ones about watercolor pencils specially. I have some of these, I wish I had more, but I know I will, so, ok. I didn't imagine you could mix them with polychromos for some effects. I'll try it out. Dark indigo is one of my favorite colors. I love your cat around you. 😉😁 Have you tried them on dark paper?
Which brand of watercolor pencils has the more vibrant-brighter colors: Faber Castell's Albrecht's Durer wc pencils or the Derwent Inktense wc pencils?
I have yet to try the inktense but the faber castell Albrecht Durer are light fast so they will not fade over time. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions!
Happy belated birthday! I am still watching the video, but had to stop and comment about the hysterical photo bomb by Stewie at 4:03. Aren't cats the best? Mine will do the same thing, if my attention is focused elsewhere he will get it, one way or another. Stewie is adorable BTW!
+Dossu Niloy I'm a beginner and I loved them. I did try just a few pencils at first though. I found them super easy to use. And super fun to have. I got them before any other watercolor pencil and I still go back to them. They are expensive so you will have to see if they are right for and getting a few pencils is just the way to do it.
Very interesting to know that once the color is dry, it becomes permanent and you are able to add more color without mixing it up with the color underneath!!!
i don't really like wetting my watercolor pencil, i'm afraid it will break the pencil. haha thanks for your video tho! quite helpfull i'm thinking on buying one, but i don't know which one to buy, this one or the polychromos one. i probably will use it for detailing. they're both have different color scheme, i love the albrecht durer colors but i want to try polychromos as well. i had a bad time using classic color pencil, they're too waxy and hard to blend together, i wonder if it's just the pencil i used.
i know, but i'm not using fabercastell back then when i try using classic color, it's quite pricey, but i don't think have the same quality as polychromos since it's not that expensive. i love using watercolor and probably will use the pencil for detailing. which one do you think i should buy? :/
+ColoringKaria Thanks, I am sold and will buy my first set of watercolor pencils! I might go for the 60 since I'm just dabbling with watercolor pencils :)
Very useful! Would you say that watercolor pencils look the same on paper when used dry as regular colored pencils? Or they are more waxy looking? Also, you said that Faber Castell names are the same across their products, do they look the same too? Can you achieve the same effect with these pencils as if you would be using Polychromos?
Ha! Love your cat! Mine do the same always when I am busy LOL! Great tutorial Karia! I am debating on purchasing these, I have a set of watercolor pencils but they don't have this kind of pigment load. Just wondering what size set to get I think 60 might be enough for me too. I saw in a comment you are afraid of watercolors, dont be you will do fine. Just start out by watching some videos buy a good professional watercolor set. Look for sales there are a lot of good ones that go on sale all the time. Purchase really good watercolor paper too, Fabriano is priced resonable. Check out Thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich she does lots of watercolor videos on youtube that are great for beginners, best of luck and this was great Thanks for posting this.
thank you so much for your kind words. Since publishing this video over a year ago I have totally fallen in love with watercolor paints and colored pencil. I even have the full set of 120 Albrecht Dürer watercolor pencils. I did an updated review with these pencils. ruclips.net/video/4VigqTpu_sM/видео.html I also have a bunch of watercolor paint reviews with more coming! Anyway I really think it's you. But for me I really think if I had it to do again I would have just waited and gotten the biggest set I can afford especially now with the prices being lower than they were when I bought the set of 60. If I had to make a suggestion I would say get the largest set you can afford. With watercolor paints it's totally possible to do everything you need with 2 each yellow, red and blue, but with watercolor pencils you can get much more depth and interest with more colors. +Kim Ngân Ngô it is an effect used with watercolor with salt. If you search "watercolor and salt" you should get a lot of videos. I have not tried this with coloring books.
+Amanda Huynh yeah it's not for everyone. I think though that's because the color will desolve if you get it wet but that's the point of doing it that way. Still you should never do something you are not comfortable with.
I am surprised and disappointed that these are not true watercolor pencils, but are apparently ink pencils, like Derwent's Inktense line. When I use WC pencils, I want them to be workable exactly as are watercolors, meaning that they should blend/lift after drying when water is applied to them. A number of watercolor techniques (e.g. blotting up clouds, pulling a moon or sun out of the sky, creating waves/reflections in water, etc.) require that the color be liftable. OTOH, I am glad that I watched this, as I was contemplating purchasing this set, but have now decided to go with the Derwent 72-color woodless Aquatone set instead. Anyway, thanks for the heads-up.
These are NOT ink. They are a watersolunble pigment but not ink or "true" watercolor, rather a special creation of Faber Castell's or at least that's what it was told. but these are not ink. they are lightfast unlike inktense and work up very similar to true watercolor only difference is that these will not rework as well after they are dried but there is nothing i was disappointed about them. I found them to be a great tool and i use them along with both watercolors and dry pencils. they layer amazingly well. and have made me very happy
You are not using them right! You need to paint yourself in the Jesus pose and call the paint melancholia. but if u dont want to do that, you must paint the Alps and the grass and the rabbit...
You can also pick the wood shavings from the container and use the pencil scraps with water and paint. If you put your wet brush into the shavings, even mixed colors then put them on wet paper you get nice color mixes, patterns and texture markings.
+Connie Keyes very true.
Just ordered these I’m excited
thats awesomne!

im using faber castell watercolor pencilsfor the first time because i use pastels only. and its new for me to handle watercolor pencils
+Sydney Aussie let me know how you like it!
What I like to do is sharpen off little specks of pigment, you can use contrasting colors and make new ones.
+B l a c k P a n d a that's a wonderful idea! I'll try that!
Nice video, thank you. I'm waiting for delivery on my pencils.
Let me know how you like them or if you have any questions!
I loooove cats! My cat has jumped up on my drafting table when I was painting! Stupid purple, green, orange, sky blue cat! Ha ha!
You do a great job!!!! I love your videos and have learned so much!!!!

Cool. I've been wondering about watercolor pencils
+elsa Grace :)
+elsa Grace :)
I really enjoyed this video. Thank you so much. So thorough.
Do you know which pencil sharpener fits these please. I can’t find oneanywhere.
Thank you for this video! Love the cat cameo haha
Thank you for watching. Let me know if you have any questions.
Lol your awesome! "I reject and denounce myself for that" 😂cats can be pesky when doing art! No judgement! Thanks for this review and demo! I'm excited to use my pencils
Can I know the brand name of your little brush that you use in this video?
Very impressive video!
Thank you, great information for us beginners.
+Sharon French thank you for watching! Let me know if you have any questions.
I got this colours and I‘m really looking forward to using them.
I watched this video although I‘m from Austria :) so please don‘t mind my Bad english 😬
thank you for watching! Let me know if you have any questions.
+Sienna Angel thanks I'm glad you like the video!
wonderful review!
I have the 36 set but I'm saving for the 120
I have to have every colour in the box..just like when I was a kid with cyaola crayons lol...I've subscribed to your channel!
Thank you so much! I have the 60 set and I want the wood set of 120!!! Lol.
I will do more tests on this when I do the actual review but I dont know when that will be and this way you can at least have an answer before then:
ruclips.net/video/M9zYgc5Kv-8/видео.html
+ColoringKaria Hmmm.... Never thought about having to dissolve all the pigment. Not even sure how I would do that or know that I did that.... Any tips? I thought the Inktense were the only watercolor pencils that were permanent when dry, and they indeed are no matter how lightly I use them. But sometimes it would be useful to have the FC AD permanent as well, so any help you can provide would be great. I will also watch the FC video.
I love these more then my inktense
I feel the same way.
I may have a question. Which sharpeners do you think are the best for the watercolor pencils?
+Lenalee Lee I use either the Faber Castell green sharpener or the Alvin bullet brass sharpener.
ColoringKaria but I've heard that once the color are used for watercolor, they lose their lightfastness
Tom BlueHeart
I cant speak for other brands but the faber castell AD ones will not.
Do you know if these pencils will work on fabric? I want to color on my art quilts.
I do not know. I would guess not but i have no idea.
+Maureen Hayes Thank you so much! Stewie is just needy, I don't understand why he feels the need to be in almost every video!
is it ok for beginner ? should i buy 'only color' pencil?
+Dossu Niloy I'm a beginner and I loved them. I did try just a few pencils at first though. I found them super easy to use. And super fun to have. I got them before any other watercolor pencil and I still go back to them. They are expensive so you will have to see if they are right for and getting a few pencils is just the way to do it.
Very interesting to know that once the color is dry, it becomes permanent and you are able to add more color without mixing it up with the color underneath!!!
Thank you for sharing all these techniques!!!
+Peti C glad you liked the video!
+Peti C this varies by brand so you should check your brand but that is true with the pencils shown in the video!
Thank you.
i don't really like wetting my watercolor pencil, i'm afraid it will break the pencil. haha
thanks for your video tho! quite helpfull
i'm thinking on buying one, but i don't know which one to buy, this one or the polychromos one.
i probably will use it for detailing.
they're both have different color scheme, i love the albrecht durer colors but i want to try polychromos as well. i had a bad time using classic color pencil, they're too waxy and hard to blend together, i wonder if it's just the pencil i used.
+Listya Ari I think there is a huge quality gap between the polychromos and Albrecht Durer and the red and blue lines of faber castell pencils.
i know, but i'm not using fabercastell back then when i try using classic color, it's quite pricey, but i don't think have the same quality as polychromos since it's not that expensive.
i love using watercolor and probably will use the pencil for detailing. which one do you think i should buy? :/
+Listya Ari you can try it. I haven't tried it. I have just been buying tiny paint brushes. Size 0 and smaller.
Thanks for posting this video. What is your favorite brand of watercolor pencils?
Thank you for watching. I honestly really love the Albretch Durer water color pencils featured in this video!
+ColoringKaria Thanks, I am sold and will buy my first set of watercolor pencils! I might go for the 60 since I'm just dabbling with watercolor pencils :)
I really loved your tutorial it was nice and
helpful, when can we see you own cat in your painting ???
+Szilvi Szlucska thank you for your kind words! I'm not quite there yet but I'm getting there.
LOL when I first heard your kitty, I thought it was one of mine and I'm like...what???
+Nan Racu LOL!
Ive watched a bunch of videos today on this and none of them helped any. I did learn a few tricks with this video. I just need/want water color paper.
thank you so much! Let me know if you have any questions!
I wrote this before you talked about the indexing, you might ignore some of my rambling:)
Its ok. thank you for watching!
I did an updated review with these pencils.
ruclips.net/video/4VigqTpu_sM/видео.html
I also have a bunch of watercolor paint reviews with more coming!
Anyway I really think it's you. But for me I really think if I had it to do again I would have just waited and gotten the biggest set I can afford especially now with the prices being lower than they were when I bought the set of 60. If I had to make a suggestion I would say get the largest set you can afford. With watercolor paints it's totally possible to do everything you need with 2 each yellow, red and blue, but with watercolor pencils you can get much more depth and interest with more colors.

thanks for this love it!
Thank you for a lovely tutorial with these watercolour pencils. Have you tried using salt with them to create a background?
sr but I have never heard about using salt, can you explain for me, pleaseee?
+Kim Ngân Ngô it is an effect used with watercolor with salt. If you search "watercolor and salt" you should get a lot of videos. I have not tried this with coloring books.
Thank you so much. I learnt sth *kiss*
+Kim Ngân Ngô 😀 no problem!
Your channel is great I subscribe
@Coloring Karia Great very informative video tks!I
Thanks for watching!
thank you thank you thank you!!!!
I laughed out loud when you said you reject and denounce yourself for your cat comment
Do a link to the apple drawing video
On the container it says not to get the pencil wet
+Amanda Huynh yeah it's not for everyone. I think though that's because the color will desolve if you get it wet but that's the point of doing it that way. Still you should never do something you are not comfortable with.
Love you.. big hug
OMG I love your cat huahuahuhua
Save your lead when you sharpen these pencils, it's still usable for doing stuff like the skies in landscape and so on.
Apple is cat approved. That’s all matters.
You are not using them right! You need to paint yourself in the Jesus pose and call the paint melancholia. but if u dont want to do that, you must paint the Alps and the grass and the rabbit...
??
Pronounced Faber... NOT FIBER!!! What is it with you yanks?
