- Kevin reviews the progress of the Westerly house. Tommy and Jeff work on the main staircase at Jeff’s shop and then they bring it to the house to install. At the Idea House, Kevin looks at new clapboard siding technology. Richard tours a factory to see how a furnace is built and then watches one being installed at the project house.

Kevin O'Connor arrives to find the house is just about weather tight on the exterior. Inside, the main living space has been opened up, and upstairs are three newly framed bedrooms.
Now it's time to replace the temporary stairs with a new staircase that has been prefabricated in Jeff Sweenor's millshop. There, Kevin finds Tom Silva and Jeff adding the final oak treads on the stringerless stairway. They take it to the project house to be installed.
Always on the lookout for new technology, Kevin travels to the Greek Revival This Old House Idea House in Connecticut where the builder is using a new clapboard siding made with an engineered wood strand technology. There he meets project foreman Gordon Jacobsen, who is installing the siding on the front porch.
Back at the project house, the plan is to replace the old furnace with two new efficient furnaces--one in the basement and one in the attic. Richard Trethewey travels to the factory in Indianapolis to see the latest manufacturing techniques. The new furnaces arrive back at the project house in Westerly where Richard meets HVAC installer Michael Gamache who unboxes the units and starts to set one up in the attic.
One year ago, the California town of Paradise experienced the worst wildfire in the US in a century. Almost 25,000 people were left homeless and 85 did not survive. Despite the devastation, the people of Paradise are determined to rebuild. On the one-year anniversary of the disaster, This Old House pays tribute to the courageous people who survived and those who have chosen to rebuild.

I work in paradise for Silvermark Construction!
I’m a superintendent and commute daily from Vacaville!!
We are currently rebuilding out there, it’s so awesome to see all the homes that have come back up in such a short time.
I’ve been out there since Aug 2020 and will be out there for the next year!
The difference is amazing and satisfying to see!!
Love this show and everything TOH stand for.
THANK YOU GUYS!!!
@@brianglade848 How cool would that be! 😎
Is all that dead underbrush gone or are they letting it grow again ? Thanks.
@@augustreil There’s a series of different sub contractors and FEMA constantly clearing debris and cutting down trees and burning brush and wood in piles.
The city has really cleaned up.
@@forgivethefuture, Thank you for the info, much appreciated.
Not sure where you are from, but based on your name I just want to say I was commenting on another homebuild channel recently that the answer to the construction labor shortage is immigrant labor.
Build America, become an American. It's a win-win.
Apologies if I assume too much. I'm glad you are happy!
I love this show
comfort food for over 40 years.
The guy spraypainting his hand was classic. Lol

A truly cool community rebuild! 👍😉🇨🇦💜
I lost my home in that fire. It was truly terrifying. I chose to move on. That community was sick a wonderful community.
Glad to see that the city is rebuilding
Last fire I worked before moving out of California was the camp fire, definitely brings what you value most into perspective. Hope to go back and see it rebuilt some day.

Right on, real jobs
Keep doing well
One life lost is one too many lives lost!
Great video
15:20 now I know why these fail early sometimes because the workers hit the small electronic parts with their pliers but don't bother to mention it. We need fully automated manufacturing.
Just watched an episode where a couple contractors were ripping siding off a house while on a lift. The guy was stabbing at the siding with a rake tool with stuff flying in the air and the guy had no safety glasses on. I see this all the time on home improvement shows and cannot believe it.
Thanks god job
Jenny Jenkins (12:20) looks so proud and happy that I fell In love with her.
@Corat thought gabby was yours?
"there's a cleat that glued and nailed" oh boy is it ever nailed... MORE NAILS MORE STRENGTH!!!! Wonder if the workers get paid by how many nails they use in a day 🤣
Old School Joe Montana jersey!
Why can't we have a more permanent fire proof/resistant solution in those fire prone regions by building houses with concreate and rebars?
What are the studs made of that are being used? They look like pressed board???
Check out episode 3 where Kevin tours a factory in Canada where they make those engineered lumber.
BTW I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.

真棒
What tool belt is that staircase fitter using, looks like an occidental leather
No way that short of a piece of siding is going to expand that much. 12 ft yes.
00:51 Start of show
Dude just sprayed oil all over his hand and could care less. That’s a worker!
A bit of primer for the wood, and a bit of primer for the hand…
Gotta keep your hands sealed from the elements ya know xD

Love the show but I'm skeptical on the No stringers set of stairs. Call me crazy
I don’t understand this season. The “old” house was almost entirely erased.
That's been almost every season for like 25 years. Complete rebuild no normal person could afford while not so carefully hiding all the free materials and labor they get.
🙏❤️❤️❤️
17:43 preview of next season (heartbreaking)
Main factory conveyor belt better not jitter anymore
I give that siding product 10-15 years tops. Horrble idea using particle board in an exposed area in that climate.Better keep it caulked at all times, because that is EXACTLY where it will fail.
10:41 ummmm....
Might be the camera angle but I doubt it.
...lost in the campfire?
Same reaction here... what?!
Wildfires are named for their point of origin. The one that destroyed Paradise was named the "Camp Fire" after Camp Creek road.
Why the repeats?
Oh crap I didn't know you were in my town.
ja I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.

Why they rebuild the houses with wood material again!!?
About a 1/4 off ur mark there bub
500 ml. I Gen. Remy Martin Wilconson.?
No wonder furnaces are such crap nowadays and never last long- too many parts
4:49 I think you missing a nail or 2. /s
I saw a lot of humans doing menial labor in that furnace factory. Gotta say I have mixed feelings. Love to see people having work, but most of them can be (and almost certainly will be) replaced with robots.
It may look like it doesn't require much skill, but getting it right the first time all day long isn't easy.
And seriously, we've been told that robots will replace us since the 60s.
@@mendonesiac Robots havent replaced but simply moved labor around.
Siding is very questionable. 3/16 gap on the ends? Then what , a 100 tubes of caulk??
not to mention one big positive of engineered lumber products (that was glorified osb) is its stability.
I concur.

Great show, but why not tell us WHAT STATE WESTERLY IS IN. DON'T ASSUME WE KNOW? Matter of fact, why not show a google satellite view of the location on the video at the start.
Rhode Island. Westerly is across Long Island Sound from the far end of Long Island.
the location was given in the first episode of the series on this house - Westerly, Rhode Island. But, yeah, I think they could at least give the state in the description.
They probably don't do the satellite view thing for privacy reasons
Miss Molly loves To catch the bad guys !!
Heat doesn't "go up by gravity" but by convection! Cold air return descends "by gravity" because its denser & there's usually a small suction created by small lower pressure difference by missing rising air... large dangling earrings at factory are dangerous & contrary to safety standards :(

Reason the fires happen so much is because CA government failures. Bloated unless government is to blame

When are you guys going to have a new season rather than repeats???
So Kevin what makes this garage so good, Kevin its cheap, easily made and non-durable....
You know it must be quite a hassle to be such a rich person I mean having to put up with having all the nice things in life I couldn't think of a harder thing to do than have a brand new truck what I want it and a brand new house as big as I want it that would be pure hassle I think I'll stick with my $700 a month and living in my mobile home
@@brooksteer5629 People like Jim are basically explanations for themselves.
Tommy is looking rough... too much working for that Man.. take a vacation son. Or maybe it’s just Father Time...🤷🏼
HI TOH , I've heard of a popular skirt for women but not a poplar skirt ! 😁
You guys should bring in April Wilkerson as a guest periodically. Your viewership might double like the other guy...
😂
Sorry, but Tommy is impossible to replace. Mr. Arrogant is not the guy.
Why didn't they just buy a bigger house in the first place. Instead of building one.
Probably would have been cheaper.
Quit acting like you are adding on or remodeling! You knocked the *entire house* down! IT IS NOT THE OLD HOUSE ANYMORE! You're building a new house on a freshly cleared lot.
