It's good to see that TOH is helping to keep stuff out of the landfill. I wish they were proactive this way. Even if the sat things at the curb, it would help. DIYers could use kitchen cabinets for the workshop, etc.
As a born New Englander whose relatives were employed by a maker of high end precision tools, I have watched TOH for years. My dad was the guy the other guys came to when they were stuck. He had no specialized training, but his dad also made tools. One thing we knew: if he did it, it was done right. Watching Tommy makes me smile...recognize the approach.
I am excited about their new apprentice programs..Good for the trades and definitely good futures for the apprentices. Before Richard I could not imagine watching PLUMBING being done!
At the end, it seemed like they were talking about using the existing cabinets, then a habitat for humanity guy stepped in on que and listed what they want to take including the knotty pine, then Kevin was like whoa, slow down, then the vultures swooped in. Im guessing the knotty pine was swiftly swept out of there! 😅
I would like them to renovate one of the home they did from the 80's. Nothing would have to be structurally find. But stuff would be out dated 40 years later.
I love language stuff:) Hearing Jenn say that taking some plants out will alleviate space was really interesting. It's not a normal meaning of the word alleviate, not in the dictionary like that, but I'm pretty sure I've heard it used like that by New Englanders. I wonder if it will spread.

Fun fact! Those style homes were considered cheap and gaudy at the time. The insult was, "Can't you afford a real home?" Nowadays, Eichler homes, Wright homes, and similar post and beam homes sell for a premium.
It never fails to amaze me that this show has never visited, worked on, or did a historical reference on the Eikler Homes built up and down California during the 50's and 60's. They are way nicer with much better architecture as a modern interpretation of the Ranch House.
Aw hooey! Thought we was going to Montana, or maybe Sheridan Wyoming! Guess ya all didn't have to go that far to find an ole-. Bunkhouse 😄. This one's gonna be worth following. Figures Tommy would call Norm and tell him we have a tired "Boomer" needs repairing. You might have wanted to keep the chaps though, maybe a few splinter's removing that Pine! We'll see?
Yes, we know the owners of the property can do whatever they want, but here they turned what was a fairly complete historically accurate structure into a McMansion. A real shame because it could have been modernized yet still have kept its considerable charm.
The entire point of TOH is to save and preserve old homes. This home is perfect just the way it is. Update the mechanical and electrical, but leave the bones alone!!!!! Why buy a beautiful house and completely destroy it. Just buy another home and leave these classics to those of us who actualy appreciate old homes.
@@Mark.Watson that's more "ask this old house". Since the beginning of the original series "this old house" the entire point has been preserving the originality and heritage if old homes while make necessary upgrades to fit modern life. Hello from Ohio that want a ranch i don't know where you get that that was a ranch when It doesn't have several hundred acres so it's just a ranch house on a little tiny dab of property
Most places, if you leave a couple of walls standing, you can call it a remodel... and it costs less and probably has fewer fees and permits than building new.
It's likely related to the taxes in Rhode Island, for example, a full tear down is a certain amount of taxes, but keeping within a certain footprint is another amount of taxes.
Nice cabinets already exist in the home. Nice Wood paneling on the walls, Nice wood ceiling, sort of nice wood burning stove, I rather see more brick, and unpainted. but with lots of work can remove the paint on the stone. House looks nice how it is. Why RUIN it. House just got so ruined by these PEOPLE. Horrible people that do not understand the work and crafting of this house. These people do not have any busy buying this type of a house.
Im tired of seeing people turn really nice old homes into big mic mansions, this house was plenty big for four people and build to withstand any storm.
Looks like instead of two bedrooms for the kids, they might just go to the lake and take some of that knotty pine and build a beaver dam for one of the kids. Any guesses which one?
Why in the world would you need 3,000 square feet for 4 people? American design is always bigger bigger and bigger, it would be nice to see smaller design with a creative use of space. TOH should do a build on a smaller home around 1,000/1,500 square feet, you know, something the average American could afford. These high dollar builds are getting old in my opinion.
My guess is keeping within the original 3 bedroom floor plan is directly related to the taxes. It gets nutty in New England, especially Rhode Island, the smallest state in the union so they are hungry for money.
“No, but the burritos do!” Best line of this show, EVER!
