Shower drain looked great, being hidden at the back . . . then I thought, what happens if you have a plug problem? or a different plumbing issue arise??? Yikes! I loved the video about making the glass orb balls, and how they had to change the chimney structure! Great video
Oof. While I'd seen other eps on this build last year, this was my first time seeing this particular one. My family and I spent a week at Fisherman's Memorial Campground in Narragansett in June of '21. We also spent a day on Block Island. While we did find the house (looks great), I did not know about the glass orbs on Block Island. Wish I'd known. I'd have definitely tried to find one.
Tommy: “keep fasteners 1/2” to 1” from edge”. -they proceed to fasten 1/4” from edge. Maibec shingle manufacturer specs at least 3/4” overlap of shingle courses. Some of the shingles have no overlap.
What’s the fire hazard with these wood shingles? Doesn’t look like there’s any useful fire inhibitor treatment? Seems like a turned over grill or a lightning strike would put the whole place on the ground in minutes.
@@Nill757 Let me prefice this by saying I get where your coming at but there is more to the equation than just what burns. TL;DR, they have rules to follow, and its not like wood siding is just waiting to combust the moment you put it up. Wood siding is rather good, its not like it will combust on the first sunny day after its installed, especially once its painted your talking about having to hold flame or keep sparks on it long enough to cause it to catch, not likely unless an extreme occours. The next thing you have to deal with is the bylaws and codes that are in play. They explained this a lot if you didn't notice but their in a historic district, and they have to make sure that the building complies with those regulations. This means using materials that are approved, in looks that are approved and more, even if they wanted to use more fireproof materials they probably have to use the wood shingles because of those rules.
Yep. That fake chimney, with the unnecessary cleaned brick, unnecessary steel saddle, designed by an unnecessary structural engineer, scaffolding up on the roof, etc etc might be $60K. For a Fake chimney.
Seems kind of petty of the historical commission to force them to re-use the old bricks rather than just going with something close enough. The house was about to fall down before the new owners bought it. Historical commission should have just pencil-whipped anything that looked correct.
They really screwed the pooch on the cedar at 8:20...Every shingle tommy put on was too close...Ideally, as a cedar guy; shingles should be as close to center of the shingles it overlays...Sometimes ya gotta search a bit...When you're a good mechanic; the skinny one get you centered nicely...
Your forgetting, they have to make it look exactly like the 1883 shingles. If they are fit tight, then the new ones have to fit tight. It's what some people call historical preservation. Can you imagine having to do that with a 1600's building with tons fo ornamental add-ons?
I saw the first episode and thought maybe they would go "old-fashioned". I know it's not practical to restore an old house to the way it was but dang... there's literally not one thing left of what it was but an outer shell. For heaven's sake, they propped up a "fake" chimney on steel beams. You could do a shrink-wrap completely fake plastic shell mold of the original and just paint it like a movie prop so it looks old. I just don't like it. It reminds me of the idiots putting "gas engine noise" piped through the speakers inside an EV car so they "sound" like old loud gas cars. Makes no sense. p.s. This house had to cost hundreds of thousands or millions to restore like this. This show is just a new "rich people spend money" show.
So worried about keeping all the houses looking historical accurate. As long as someone is willing to spend a bunch of money to fix up a piece of junk.
nice house - but for the life of me i cannot understand why you guys build houses from wood concrete homes last forever with low maintenance - Wood = WORK
respected craftsmen, do you understand that if this house was built of stones, then you would not need to reanimate it? And so all over America, the tree rots, is broken by hurricanes and washed away by water
@@jayburris6252 if can't function like it did what did they preserve? They preserved what it looks like coming out of the top of the house. But thats about it.
So glad to see TOH posting full-length episodes on RUclips again. You were greatly missed. 👍🏻
Love the story on the glass. Fun trip to area to hunt
Great looking project. All it takes is a multimillion dollar budget!
I remember back in the early 1980s with Bob Villa when This Old House had simple bump-out living rooms that cost in the THOUSANDS. 😆
Honestly need that these days, A closet for my house I am building cost $500 all said and done, let alone an entire remodel.
I appreciate good hearted people! 💙

How is it different than any other second floor drain? Looks like it can be snaked to me.

Those homeowners must have more money than God
Can't use that brick....Tosses it right back into the pile of bricks to sort lol.
Outdoor equipment, for the pool pump & filter…?…that owner has never even moved a lawnmower out of the way, never mind used one.
That's why they hire out people to clean. Mow. Keep the house clean. If your a millionaire you don't lift a finger

It's a shame what egos have done to the building industry. For the sake of money.
