I’m really starting to get into woodwinds and I’m wanting to eventually study it in college and the “how to write for” series on your channel is very helpful.
I wish Dvorak had seen this before he wrote his 8th symphony. :-) 1st movement has a 4 measure VERY important EH solo, about 12 minutes into the piece. Only a few beats of rest to change instruments and the first note is a solo! 4 measures of terror for the player! Of course, he learned his lesson by the 9th symphony. It has one of the most famous EH solos, which you played very nicely.
Could you also do these types of videos for more uncommon woodwind instruments like ocarina, recorder, tin whistle, etc.? As a young composer, your arrangements have sort of inspired me to try using less traditional instruments haha.
It is possible to play the repertoire of the recorder in f whith the cor anglais,just play it as it would be a recorder,it is very simple and you can enjoy a lot this beautiful music:-)

I have one now a million years later and enjoy playing it, when I can. Thanks for a great overview of this wonderful instrument!
I don't agree on the fact that english horn can't play quite as loud as oboe. With the right combination of reed, bocal and experience a specialist can play and even wider range of dynamics. Also, the name cor Anglais Is a modern transformation of what meant "horn made at an angle". Originally a relative of both "oboe da caccia" (hunting oboe, a double reed instrument curved in the shape of a horn with a metal bell) and part of the extended oboe family in a hystorical period in which double reed families blended together with many strange instruments. Early models had a very rough angle, being made of two or more wooden parts glued together in a angled shap, hence the name.
This series is aimed at composers, not players. What you’re saying can be true, but learning about uncommon exceptions is not useful for composers, many of whom write pieces for players that they don’t know and will never meet.
The warming up before a solo part is so true, and not only for large amounts of rests, but also when switching between oboe and EH. I once played first oboe and English Horn and I would have enough time to put my oboe down and pick up my EH for the solo, but the embouchure is quite different for EH, so the sound came out a lot less controlled 😅 Luckily my conductor was also an oboist and knew what happened l

I’m not sure there’s enough difference to separate soprano/alto/tenor. Especially as far as writing is concerned, the differences are only in transposition, and maybe altissimo range
I imagine most oboists would tell you to start with oboe. But honestly, I think EH is a better place to start. The reeds are far easier to deal with, and you can focus a lot more on technique and musicality before worrying about conquering oboe. To me, if you can find resources to learn any instrument you’re interested in, that’s the one to start with.

No because no one calls it that. Also that implies that the normal oboe is a soprano, and what about the oboe d’amore? What would it be? How about instead trying to force a naming system onto instruments that don’t need it, we use the names they already have and that very much work.

If it was me (and I’m the kind of student that calls out stupid stuff that teachers say and corrects them), I’d tell him that until he is famous enough to change the name, he should just accept the name it has.
