Hey Josh! Thank you so much for this! I'm writing a clarinet solo and wanted to learn more about the instrument as I've only written for it in orchestral settings and haven't really had the time to dig deeper into what it actually is capable of. This was very helpful!
A clarinet playing friend of mine recently discovered the horrors of throat tones. In band, she's second clarinet, and in one piece we're playing there's a passage where she's pretty much in the throat tone range for a good 8-10 measures or so. And she's the only second clarinet.
Nice shout out to the chalumeau B and C. I actually use those on a semi-regular basis om Bb, dependent on what the musical line is doing on my part (can't really do it on bass for intonation, and the contras I play don't have trill keys, though I can do clarion B-flats on those horns...). I find that the chalumeau B and C sound 'better' than the clarion versions. These days, however, I specialize on alto on down to contrabass, so Bb [soprano] isn't something I need to worry about in performance.
What a great lesson. :) I'm starting to learn about composing orchestral music and videos like this are priceless to me. You have a way of communicate these informations thats really engaging for a viewer. Looking forward to see more of these! :) And to make sure I understood: these registers and throat tones (transposed of course) apply to clarinet in any key?
Thanks! Make sure to subscribe if you haven't already, there's lots more to come. Next week I'll be coming out with my writing for flute video! And yes, that's correct about the throat tones. The only exception is bass clarinet, which sounds far fuller in the throat tones.
Can’t hurt to put it in the performance notes. It’s more of a jazz concept originally, so some classical players might be caught off guard. I’m a big believer in plain English in music. Sheet music is there to help explain the music, not to fit traditions of random Italian phrases!
Hi Josh, thank you for the video, it was very inforative! Let me see if I got something right..after the second part of this you'll be doing the same for the rest of the woodwinds behind you?
Hi Aedrian, I will! I'm going to get clarinets, flutes, and saxes done first, but after that I'll be going into those instruments behind me (and more). If I get enough demand I might do those first, but I figure it's better to have a foundation in the more common woodwinds before going into the more unusual ones.
Thank you so much for this great lesson! I especially enjoy learning what is fun to play on an instrument (i.e., not just physically possible). I found you through Thomas Goss' Orchestration Online Facebook group, so do keep posting there!
I'd love to, but at this point I don't think I can justify all the time it takes making the longer videos. The two minute videos seem to work a lot better for people. If my longer videos did better I'd certainly make more, but it takes hours and hours more to make them. And right now, my two minute videos get more views than these videos in two days. But maybe one day I'll do it! We'll see where my channel goes!
So i have to write a music piece for my band class in school. We will be preforming it at a concert for my clarinet group that is made up of 4 Bb and 2 Basses. What would you recommend I do for this?
It's sort of funny how the tone quality of the registers of the Bass Clarinet are almost reversed. The Low register is a lot louder and has more presence than the Clarion register, which is actually rather mellow and and blending.
pues no lo pienses tanto XD, no se si depronto escuchaste a lucho bermudez seria espectacular que interpretaras algun tema de el y saludos desde colombia XD

lovely instrument
Thanks a lot Josh for this great clarinet video... I am looking forward to more wind instruments videos, ethnic winds in particular;-)
I agree! I always think in concert pitch except when learning about the characteristics of transposing instruments
With Have you contrib uted to the creation of a sample library? Are sample libraries a good or bad thing? Or is this a silly question?
Thank you so much for this! Super useful!
young man, you get a gold internet star for this informative video. thanks a bunch.
Just great knowledge about all woodwinds. It will be great, to have a simmilar channels for strings and brass instruments. Thak you.
hey i figured out how to do a flutter on clarinet. idk how but it works
Probably in the throat, right?

Great videos Josh, really engaging and well explained.

I already have. Thanks! :)
For the "S" notation, would I write what it means in my performance notes or should I trust my player knows what it means?

Allright! I'll subscribe then ;)

Man, this is exactly what I was looking for!!! Perfect! Thanks. Simple info! Definitely subscribing!
I need to dress up as squidward for Halloween then learn the spongebob theme
"But the nice one is hard to get to. That's life." HAHAHA

do one of these for oboe and flute
Ugh I would, but... look at the view count of this video compared to the short ones. And it’s so so much more work
Thank you so much!!!!
Your videos are awesome! Are there videos similar to yours for brass that you know of?
Not that I know of, no. Sounds like there might be a hole in the market!
Good stuff!
We get it! You can play Rhapsody In Blue!
Invaluable! Thanks!
Dude you're gorgeous! (:
Huh, quite a coincidence that the clarion register is in the similar range as the clarino register of the natural trumpet.
Can u do a full series for C flute

I'm not sure I understand the question... Sounds like a good group! You can do whatever you'd like.
So if a Bb clarinet goes down to a concert D then it would follow that an A clarinet would go down to Db?
Yep!
what is the fingering for the alternate Bb?
I think
A key + the second trill key from the top
i can play a high d lol im getting there
in altissimo
Good job playing altissimo on clarinets hard because theres not alot of overtones because of the small mouthpiece and reed
Skadi I can play up to the altissimo a
And sometimes a b flat or a short b natural
"Clarinet players like to feel smart" I didnt come here to be attacked

Oh god I play clarinet and I absolutely hate hate hate hate throat tones why do they even exist like why they are awful
Honestly, everything is ok until middle Bb, that one is super bad
Actually C# chalimo(I spelled it wrong ) you missed a octive
Big range, big problems.

Am I the only one that realized he played the Rhapsody in blue solo wrong at the end
deberias grabar videos en español para alcanzar mas lugares
Estoy de acuerdo... pero no sé si mi español es lo suficientemente bueno...

I love his eyes. He reminds me of a bald Heath Ledger. Idk he's just really cute
He really is stunning!!!
Big round sound??? What is that
Mochi Jimin it means that the sound is really full and since the low register is kinda warm, it feels “round”
