everyone’s knocking barrett’s vowels and i know this is a broadway show but i think this song in particular was meant to have a more punk/alt sound, and a lot of bands in those genres warp their vowels like that. plus it’s fun to sing it like that even though i know it isn’t “proper” technique (i like to practice both ways)
Thank you for clearing that up for people, I never understood why everyone was talking badly about the vowels they work well for the song and Barrett is amazing.
Also it helps keep the belt healthy and stops you forcing it
She also uses open vowels to help to ease the tricky notes on her voice

I keep doing the "May than bay wath yar" thing at the end HELP
It’s about your vowel placement, if that makes it easier for you to sing that part, go for it!
For me it helps to really lean into the “ee” vowel, it’s very bright and widely shaped, like “feet” or “heat” :)

Don’t forget to put the vowel sound on the end like in be don’t go beeeee because that sounds very tight. The two main sounds u should use is air and or so in be do bair-e and in you do yooor-u (I’m Australian do it makes more sense to me Americans pronounce it orrrr don’t add the extra rrr sound on the end)

I just got casted as Janis at my theater so I cannot wait to sing this song and really make it my own. At least I’m going to try to for sure even if that means just adding tiny little things but I’m so excited. This song is so good and at first it wasn’t favorite of mine but I’m definitely gonna keep listening and dissecting this word.

I remember the first time I watched Mean Girls the Musical, it was after I watched Heathers the Musical, I screamed at the top of my lungs when I saw Barrett in Cautionary Tale.

I heard the Heathers soundtrack first, and then when I started listening to Mean Girls, I was like "Why does this sound so famil - oh, right, Veronica." Funnily enough, I think Janis is closer to movieverse Veronica than musicalverse Veronica. Also, I somehow can't see Janis wasting her time with an emotionally manipulative bf. At least when Cady became a Plastic, Janis was in on it, so it makes sense she didn't realize Cady had stopped being her friend. But a boy who won't listen and just does his own thing which puts her in danger - I can't see Janis taking that for too long. The second Heather's down....
