I think she should go into congress and teach our representatives about biology. Perhaps they would understand that the Bible isn’t a science book. Not sure if she talks about human reproduction in her book, but someone needs to teach our congress how that works (on a chemical/biological basis).

docs know nothing about breastfeeding unless they did it and wanted to learn about it. The milk changes as the baby grows... newborn milk is different from baby milk is different from toddler milk etc. And that sickness thing is real. as an LLL leader we were taught to tell working moms to sleep with their baby's clothing so they could make immunitites for what the baby was exposed to at daycare!

Since I had to fast before the surgery which started late morning, I had been hungry. So my way of letting them know I was awake was to say "order me a Reuben" - all I heard was "oh no, he's awake" and back under I went. The worst part was that I didn't get my Reuben.

I’ve hear a lot about women being neglected by medical research when it comes to common diseases between men and women, such as heart attacks. We need equity!
Heart attacks are misdiagnosed because the symptoms for women are completely different than those for men in many cases. You have jaw pain and you say your jaw hurts they don’t normally do an ekg. But this could be fixed with more research. Meanwhile if you’re black and female you’re more likely to have your symptoms just straight up ignored.

For example though, lets say we have a smaller town where that x child and y child being both black and white respectively the white child is more likely to be seen a certain way where as the black is seen differently even though theyre exhibiting literally the same symptoms. Its not like im trying to say something along "dr racist and bad" more like im trying to tell you if youre black a black doctor might be more beneficial as crazy as that may sound. Its not 100% though. Or for example heart attacks in women largely go undiagnosed and thusly statistically more likely to be fatal
I'm a lactation consultant. Can I say I'm so thankful we're talking about the communication between breast and baby. People think I just make all that stuff up. Also female pain. I have endometriosis so, I experienced the gaslighting about pain first hand. I worked on a postpartum ward for 6 months with all female staff and watching the discounting of pain from the other side. I was so angry about that happening from women to women in 2023. You'd think we'd do better now that we know better. And this wasn't the doctors as had been my experience. The worst offenders were nurses and they seemed oblivious to what they were doing.
I've been waiting decades for this woman. Finally, someone who's willing to do the work so the world becomes more knowledgeable, and - dare I say it? - perhaps a bit more compassionate. I know the upcoming generations won't sit on this. They'll take this research to new heights.

Thank you for helping to educate the masses .. it continues to amaze me just how much of life for women has been colored by the gender bias .. how much control men in power have continued to wield even to this day . The ripple effects of this are devastating maybe not as much here in the USA now , but throughout the world the atrocities foisted on females simply because they happened to be born a girl are astounding 😞

This perpetuates the implicit bias in them and thusly in their direction and scope of research. It takes people like Cat to drive the paradigm shift needed to open the doors to new discoveries. That can take forever in science. Just look how long it took European astronomers to all agree that the earth was orbiting the sun... almost 2 millenia passed between the first introduction of the theory around 230 BC and 1610 when Galileo began to prove it was true.

Solidarity is crucial - always stand up for other women, never let anyone put them down in a professional setting.

He did all testing to prove I was correct it was pcos. He said right after I don’t know anything about that. The male endocrinologist didn’t know about pcos an endocrine disorder

I don't have children, but have many nieces and nephews, let alone friends who have had babies. I have always heard breast feeding reduces ear infections, other ailments - colds, etc... Her explanation of the milk changing was quite interesting. I have noticed (way before seeing this) that those who did NOT breast feed did have a child with more agitated issues. Nothing major, but still. Great interview!

As I was reading the description of the book on Libby, I noticed that it barely mentioned the author, I quote: "by a brilliant new researcher and author". Even her name is not mentioned, nor her affiliation, nor her title (a student can also be hired to do research). The ONLY place her name is mentioned is obviously in the technical details of the book. If you've ever read those book cover flap style descriptions, you know there's always information about the author. And especially given the nature of the book, the irony really hits you in the face (if you're a female, that is? The males are still not noticing...). And by the way, in this clip it is also not mentioned who this person is etc. Maybe it was the cut, but just saying, it's not ok...
From her website: Cat completed her PhD in 2022 at Columbia University, where she studied the evolution of narrative and cognition. So, no, not an actual scientist, more like a popular science writer "researcher" is just a fancy, in this case misleading term for that) with a PhD in writing. Which is totally fine, but give her credit for what she is.

They are in the business popular science/science communication (like IFLS etc), which has an important place in society and which I have nothing against. I am an actual scientist but one doesn't have to be to see the difference between science and journalism: the scientists are those in the lab designing the experiments, producing the knowledge. This person is doing the very important job of communicating science to the public in a very entertaining and successful way. That's all great. But that still does not make her a scientist: she did not make any of the discoveries she is reporting on. Just as being a sports journalist does not make one an athlete, nor does being a political commentator make one a politician (an elected public representative). She is not trained in medicine etc but in storytelling and all I have qualm with is her presenting herself as something more than a journalist. Again, in contrast to, say, Matthew Walker, who both made discoveries and is communicating them. (of course, he is consolidating information, he is not only limited to his own discoveries in his communication)
PS. Check out the wonderful writing of Siddhartha Mukherjee, a medical doctor and researcher on cancer. His book on cancer The Emperor of All Maladies won the Pulitzer for non-fiction. He is both an *actual* scientist and an excellent science communicator. This lady is only the latter and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that as long as she does not misrepresent herself. The Walkers and Mukherjees of the world are the exception and not the rule, and the role of journalists in communicating science is really important and deserves to be respected as it is. But she DID misrepresent herself, because the original comment I replied to stated "finally a scientist". THAT's what's not ok. I hope it is now clear. Peace

A scientist so relatable and funny and so extremely capable of explaining scientific research to lay people. She is a goldmine for all of us and should be on as many shows as possible.
I’ve had stage 4 endometriosis it took 15 years to diagnose, by that time it grew on my bladder and bowel. I have had 13 surgeries, my insides are messed up. I was told to go to a psychologist when I had pain in my teens. I don’t know how I’m still here!
I’ve been waiting to be relieved from hip pain for 4 years. Male doctors brushed it off and said you’re in your mid 30s and running marathons so that’s life. Meanwhile, all my male runner friends getting MRI s and treatment. Finally, a woman prescribed an MRI after an accident I had and they found a tear and bursitis. Then, I found I had an aoption of a shot to reduce inflammation and see if I need surgery. But I have to wait a couple months. 😅. Still not scheduled. My accident was a few months ago and I’m still in pain with inflammation. Then men complain about qualifying times for a marathon being “easier” for women . Really?! You can have my iron deficiency, lack of medical care, angled hips, 70% less muscle mass, larger lungs, larger heart, and I’ll take what you have and I’ll still qualify😅. Just run faster.

As I listened to this PHENOMENAL guest, I thought of SO many of the women I know and their individual stories of pain, hormones, transformation, etc. I feel when someone's passion shines brightly through it really empowers others to get on board. 14 years added to the lives of men who have been castrated!?!?!?! Sarah Silverman needs to get this job full time. She is the best host out of all of them! Cat Bohannon is probably the most awesome scientist I have ever seen. She would be a great dinner party guest and she should host her own show about new scientific research. I love them both!
The book is just as facinating and clever as she is in person. Every section is filled with surprising information and some wry humor. Highly recommended.
I need to be able to like this video 1000 times. I love Sarah as host and Cat is phenomenal!! Getting valuable information from the interview but also hilarious but understandable presentation of the data and physiology. The Daily Show should bring on more scientists (though I know not all of them will have as much personality as Cat).
For the first couple of minutes I thought that Cat Bohannon is just a show-off. But as minutes passed and she continued to deliver at the same rate, by the end I was convinced that she's for real. Especially her last comment was so harsh, that the congresspeople could seriously rethink their lives and their real usefulness on this world.
Wow, I had never heard her name before but she's such a great speaker. Super interesting, absolutely hilarious, and thought provoking and highly relevant material. I hope she gets more exposure.

Exactly! I'm my state they went from check ups for women from 3 years to now every 5 years. A lot could change in 5 years with the health of a woman.

So, no, not an actual scientist, more like a popular science writer "researcher" is just a fancy, in this case misleading term for that) with a PhD in writing. Which is totally fine, but give her credit for what she is.

It's also often more telling what information a person intentionally leaves out. Because the very next sentence after the one you quoted is: _"Her writing has appeared in Scientific American, Science magazine, The Best American Nonrequired Reading, Lapham’s Quarterly, The Georgia Review, and on The Story Collider."_
Now why would that be if her studies were not scientific in nature?
@@aylbdrmadison1051 none of the titles you cite are peer reviewed scientific research journals. They are in the business popular science/science communication (like IFLS etc), which has an important place in society and which I have nothing against. I am an actual scientist but one doesn't have to be to see the difference between science and journalism: the scientists are those in the lab designing the experiments, producing the knowledge. This person is doing the very important job of communicating science to the public in a very entertaining and successful way. That's all great. But that still does not make her a scientist: she did not make any of the discoveries she is reporting on. Just as being a sports journalist does not make one an athlete, nor does being a political commentator make one a politician (an elected public representative). She is not trained in medicine etc but in storytelling and all I have qualm with is her presenting herself as something more than a journalist. Again, in contrast to, say, Matthew Walker, who both made discoveries and is communicating them. (of course, he is consolidating information, he is not only limited to his own discoveries in his communication)
PS. Check out the wonderful writing of Siddhartha Mukherjee, a medical doctor and researcher on cancer. His book on cancer The Emperor of All Maladies won the Pulitzer for non-fiction. He is both an *actual* scientist and an excellent science communicator. This lady is only the latter and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that as long as she does not misrepresent herself. The Walkers and Mukherjees of the world are the exception and not the rule, and the role of journalists in communicating science is really important and deserves to be respected as it is. But she DID misrepresent herself, because the original comment I replied to stated "finally a scientist". THAT's what's not ok. I hope it is now clear. Peace

I’ve had stage 4 endometriosis it took 15 years to diagnose, by that time it grew on my bladder and bowel. I have had 13 surgeries, my insides are messed up. I was told to go to a psychologist when I had pain in my teens. I don’t know how I’m still here!

I’ve been waiting to be relieved from hip pain for 4 years. Male doctors brushed it off and said you’re in your mid 30s and running marathons so that’s life. Meanwhile, all my male runner friends getting MRI s and treatment. Finally, a woman prescribed an MRI after an accident I had and they found a tear and bursitis. Then, I found I had an aoption of a shot to reduce inflammation and see if I need surgery. But I have to wait a couple months. 😅. Still not scheduled. My accident was a few months ago and I’m still in pain with inflammation.
Then men complain about qualifying times for a marathon being “easier” for women . Really?! You can have my iron deficiency, lack of medical care, angled hips, 70% less muscle mass, larger lungs, larger heart, and I’ll take what you have and I’ll still qualify😅. Just run faster.

As I listened to this PHENOMENAL guest, I thought of SO many of the women I know and their individual stories of pain, hormones, transformation, etc. I feel when someone's passion shines brightly through it really empowers others to get on board. 14 years added to the lives of men who have been castrated!?!?!?! That is insane

Sarah Silverman needs to get this job full time. She is the best host out of all of them! Cat Bohannon is probably the most awesome scientist I have ever seen. She would be a great dinner party guest and she should host her own show about new scientific research. I love them both!

For the first couple of minutes I thought that Cat Bohannon is just a show-off. But as minutes passed and she continued to deliver at the same rate, by the end I was convinced that she's for real. Especially her last comment was so harsh, that the congresspeople could seriously rethink their lives and their real usefulness on this world.
Wow, I had never heard her name before but she's such a great speaker. Super interesting, absolutely hilarious, and thought provoking and highly relevant material. I hope she gets more exposure.
