It strikes me as funny (or possibly ironic) that camo is considered a statement piece when the entire purpose of camouflage is to blend in! Keep up the great work Harry!
LOVE this statement: "It doesn’t matter to me if this is on trend or not, or considered timeless by the majority, I’m gonna wear it regardless. It may not be timeless for you but it’s timeless to me because it means something to me."
Agree 100%. I'm 30 & followed trends since I could purchase my own clothes. Felt so many times I had nothing to wear when my wardrobes were packed, mainly because I never had ANY timeless/basic items. Cleared everything out this year & focused more on buying timeless items to structure my outfits, helped me massively.
I'm 34 and slowly coming to the realisation that I need quality in my wardrobe, Id say I have a decentish wardrobe but some clothes just don't look or fit the same as they used to
There's no such thing as a timeless wardrobe. I'm sure none of the dudes who made those 'timeless wardrobes' in the 2010s aren't wearing any of that anymore.
Went from coming out of college in 2022 getting made fun of by my friends for always looking homeless to being known for having good fashion sense all because of you Harry! Keep doing you man you're an inspiration.
Bro same everyone started categorizing and telling me. Like this looks like something u would wear and now we went to Spain a couple weeks ago and now they say that they get “my style”😂 which is funny but I can relate went from homeless to fashion in about a year
If I HAD to choose between two extremes, I would definitely choose a timeless wardrobe. The biggest reason is because I would save a LOT of money. But also, it's just that eventually, you just gravitate towards what you like, regardless of trends.
Definitely agreed with using trends as an opportunity to build a personal form of timelessness. I think part of its also the definition of what is a timeless basic still evolving to a degree, so trends giving it more flexibility and variety (eg whatever cut of jeans are popular at a time getting more colour or design options because more people are using it as a base)
Wardrobe should be mostly timeless with a little bit of trendy. Let's say70- 80% of your clothes are timeless pieces. Then allowing around 20-30% trendy clothes that you could wear in the weekends and without spending too much to replace.
I think timeless is better as it allows you to invest in items that will last long term. I wouldn't feel comfortable to spend alot of money on something that may be outdated in a couple years
I've watched your videos here and there for a long while but I never subscribed. That is only because I feel I've subscribed to too many channels and trying to control what I subscribe to lol... but I've noticed the quality of your channel and insightfulness jump up so much lately that I said screw it, I'm subscribing. lol
To me I think the people on the "timeless wardrobe" side are like those ppl who only rock those "gentlemen haircut" and never tried anything else. Like the real men real style guy. I would call that "timeless wardrobe". Looks put together I guess but no style at all.(subjective) To me, someone like Tim dessaint is considered to be much more stylish. Life's too short to be stuck in a stubborn "timeless wardrobe" mentality. Go out and try new trends man.
I think my answer would be a mix of both, but weighted more in favour of timeless pieces. That way you can always have a 'baseline' that you feel comfortable wearing and you always look good in. You can then incorporate more playful pieces if and when you feel like it. Trying out a trending item is often fun imo and can also help develop your style by wearing something you may not have previously considered.
I also find that a fully basics fit works great if you wear jewelry (and I'm not talking about a typical paper thin gold chain). The jewelry itself becomes the statement piece. I find that I can make a ton of timeless fits that don't look basic because I like to wear a decent amount of jewelry (ie watch, bracelet, rings, earrings, nose ring, different chains/necklaces, etc.).
The issue I have with trendy items is that the intent behind them is to get attention. To me, that's a bit too narcissistic and can seem immature. I've been guilty of that myself over the years, but nowadays I definitely skew toward timeless.
I get what you are saying but I don't think all trendy items are all really loud and in your face. Like at the moment, baggy jeans are in and slim/skinnyis out but I don't see baggy jeans as being very loud and attention seeking if that makes sense?
@@HarryHas It might just be an age thing. I'm in my late 40s and don't look right in anything baggy...I stick to slim straight fit. But yes, when I was younger everyone was much more into clothing trends.
Dropping an Aphex Twin tee. You sir Harry have my respect :). True story I was working in Size? Manchester in 2015 and we had a customer sitting down that looked very much much like Richard D James and asked him if he was RDJ and he said no. Another staff member saw him and said it was 100% him lol.
Your video came just in time as I was literally in a fashion dilemma wondering how to strike a balance between timeless and trend. Keep up the great work! Subscribed and liked.
I go for a timeless wardrobe. It's timeless in the sense that it's mostly outside fashion trends. Some really classical pieces, some quirky pieces that were never trendy and may be hard to place in a certain era. Some brands have really distinct styles, like Chanel or Yohji Yamamoto, that don't really age or age slowly - the pendulum always swings from skinny to oversize fits, from narrow to exaggerated shoulders, and back again. Brands will adapt to these societal changes in taste to a greater or lesser extent. Just think of how a conservative business suit might've looked like in the 1940s, 1970s, 1990s and so on. I appreciate people with vibrant, exuberant styles simply because they add some colourful fun. They stand out from the boring minimal brigade, and the minimalists can feel smugly superior. We need each other. 🙃
I found this video very interesting ... personally i like to have a balance between timeless and trendy pieces in my wardrobe... btw I love your style, u giving me brand new ideas about how to create new looks... thanks man. --- big love from Mexico
I really don't buy either. I simply buy what works for me and my style. I may buy something that is timeless and I may buy something that is trending. I buy what I buy because I like it.
that was the best video about personal styling i've ever seen (i have been following your channel for a while). the flat outfit idea was brilliant and it was so much easier to visualize your point. amazing work!
A great video and fab food for thought, focusing in on your own personality, that of the individual and the playfulness and joy of fashion. In particular for me was musing of a trending piece becoming timeless, in particular around who you are. I bought a tee from Uniqlo a good few years ago, based around Japanese record store 'Technique Tokyo'. Simple orange shirt, small embroidered logo on the front, printed design on the back. I absolutely love this tee and still look forward to wearing it. It's a bit thicker than I've normally had from Uniqlo, sized a bit larger too, and I realised I liked this shape on me. As a musician, and in thinking that I may never actually get to Japan, there's something a bit magical about the item, daft as it may sound. Thank you for another ace video, Harry :)
9:01 I remember when I was a 12-year-old kid in the nineties, I owned that Schott bomber jacket, I had to remove the scratch piece because some bullies liked to steal them lol
I think a nicer way to explain what a timeless item is "an item which will stay current throughout its lifecycle and can be used continuously for the foreseeable future" What do you all think?
why do i feel skinnys coming back soon is inevitable. Though these days it feels like skinnys are harder to pull off and takes more thought than usual.
The problem is statement pieces gets old fast, then you endup buying more pieces wasting more money time and just adding more waste. Timeless all the way
1:50 I would argue that the long t shirt always, always, always looked bad and that's the sort of trend to avoid because it is so out of whack. Baggier pants were a trend from the 60s and even 70s with bell bottoms... they look good when you can juxtapose it in your wardrobe. But a long t shirt touching your knees has never been functional nor looked good in modern times.
Great video as always, Harry. Although using two totally different meanings for "timeless" was a bit of a stretch. Hahahaha. I can wear any item for the rest of my life, but that most certainly does not make it "timeless" in the sense that we all mean and that you defined very well at the start. Still fun video though!
Thank you mate. Glad you enjoyed it. I don’t think it was a stretch at all. The first section was about what’s considered timeless by the majority and the other section was about how something can be timeless for you. Can’t see how that’s a stretch in any way to be honest

This is perfect style advice - I find myself leaning towards the “timeless” pieces but also tend to lack some interest or depth in my outfits, so I’m keen to start incorporating more statement or “trending” pieces. Been a big fan of the channel for a while now, you’re always giving the most positive and practical advice for style in my view - keep it up!
I used to build my wardrobe around basics and timeless pieces. It was great, I look nice all the time and everything can match up well with everything else. But after a while, it got boring, so I began to experiment and get more interesting pieces like full graphic shirts, colorful pants, statement sneakers etc. I was surprised to find out that those statement pieces are actually super easy to wear, as long as you have good basics and neutrals to pair with them.
I believe in having your own personal style but updating it a little to conform to the current trend. Like what Levis is doing. The 501s had numerous updates over the years.
It took me quite a while (30 years or so) to settle in to my own personal style. But it basically revolves around colors that look good on my skin tone and cuts that work with my body. And being practical, so things you could be active in and hold up with lots of use. Needless to say, I hit up the REI discount racks as much as my bank account allows lmao.
Just buy what you like it’ll be trendy sooner or later. I remember the Y2K look as it happened and didnt dig it then or now. If your comfortable in what you wear you’ll look fine.

I stick with timeless and not trends. However, some trends can become timeless in the future. Therefore, i watch trends with a view to the purchase of potentially timeless pieces.
This is absolutely one of your best videos! I have been trying to define my personal style for some time now. I consider my style timeless, but also gravitate towards trendy pieces. All on points, mate!....i always mix timeless and statement to be different then others mostly colour wise, although if some trend fit to my style i definitely get it to complete my wardrobes..... Often i do DIY to some trends with scissors, spray paint and bleach to make them timeless 😂😂😂

Not the electronic hardcore music haha. It was just heavy hardcore music. There is also hardcore punk which I quite liked some of too but I meant more on the heavier metal side
