THEY DID NOT. JUST. MAKE. AN EPIC MOVIE TRAILER ITERATION OF THE FINALE TO MAHLER'S 2ND!!!!
i had no idea i wanted something so bad in my entire life 😭😭 nonstop tears of joy from the “Bereite Dich” all the way to the end.
And it fits well with the history of LB being a champion of Mahler. This Bradley Cooper fellow - take him seriously.
Had never heard it before, burst into tears completely involuntary. Welled up feelings I didn’t even know were possible.
@samfilmkid I highly reccomend finding a Bernstein Recording of the 2nd Symphony by Mahler. I also reccomend checking out Mahler's 3rd Symphony as well. It is easily on par with this work.
@@iangreer4585- Thank you! Need to find this! Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who worked on the film, responded on his Insta that on Friday there will be more details about the (presumably) soundtrack. They did a fantastic job on the trailer.
So we finally agree that Mahler’s 2nd Finale is the greatest piece for Trailers, right?
Wow. The way Cooper chose to emulate the film styles of different eras is stunning. This looks so good.
That really struck me. What a brilliant idea.
In 1988 I managed to send a letter to Leonard Bernstein, from East Berlin through the Iron Curtain, via the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. At Christmas of the same year, I even received a reply. Unfortunately, I never managed to ever see Leonard Bernstein live at one of his concerts in the Berlin Schauspielhaus or elsewhere in Germany. - Little did we know that our world was about to change dramatically just one year later with the Fall of the Berlin Wall. But I already knew then that LB had changed my life and my understanding of music forever. 35 years later there is the same excitement, not least due to this movie which I can´t wait to see, but also by reading these comments, some coming from very young people. I feel the very same positive chill as I did as a young woman, listening to his conducting Tschaikowsky and Mahler. Lenny is and stays alive ... Thank you, LB, and all the people who made this movie.
What an incredible story! I'm from a very different background: Mexican, born in 1985, and I'm an astrophysicist and science communicator. Yet I feel a connection to your story, since Bernstein's performances have accompanied me thorough my life since I first discovered them as a teenager in western Mexico. Music truly does bring people together.
Conducting tchaikovsky, mahler and ??
Nearly worked with him. Alas, he died. Miss him. MW
I saw this at the New York Film Festival and it was one of the most moving films I’ve seen in my entire life. I left in tears. The movie does an outstanding job of capturing who Bernstein was and gives us a close look at how his personal life translated into his music. Definitely going to watch again and again once it officially premieres!!!
well I mean Mahler - right?
If this film achieves nothing besides introducing a whole new generation to Mahler’s music (particularly his 2nd symphony which features prominently in this trailer), it will have been a completely unquestionable success and a huge net positive for the world.
For those of you who know… “Auferstehn!” ❤
If not the movie your comment already is as it got me looking it up and i am very grateful.
@@3VLN I’m so thrilled! The final 20 minutes of Mahler 2 is some of the best music ever written. Period. It has been known to even be live changing for some. Best listened to on loud and if you can see it live - do!
Would highly recommend all of his works, but my personal favourites are:
Mahler 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and 9
Happy exploring! :)
Agreed. I've had enough of Taylor Swift and would love to see Mahler become more popular 😂. After you're done with the second, don't stop there - it's an entire universe to explore. Mahler's Eighth Symphony finale is just as epic as the second if your appetite is whetted.
@@marzieboom9058 agreed! mahler 2 and 5 are my personal favourites
I think in general we are owed a good Mahler biopic. Yeah, I know we already have the Ken Russell movie, but that movie is about Ken Russell, didn't see any Mahler.
THIS MOVIE DESERVES A FULL THEATRICAL RELEASE WTF
I saw this at the London Film Festival and I’m delighted to report it is indeed spectacular!
Cooper has truly outdone himself and Mulligan NEEDS an Oscar nod!!
How much classical music is in it? Is the finale his Beethoven 9 performance in Berlin??
@@VitotheKenobi I should warn you, the film takes a closer look at Bernstein’s relationship with Montealegre than his career so there isn’t as much of his music as you might expect but there’s still a good deal of exciting moments.
Berlin isn’t featured, but there is a snippet of
West Side Story, an amazing dance number inspired by On The Town and the Mahler Resurrection Symphony is a real showstopper!
It really looks amazing. Cooper has turned out to be a natural director, yea?
It seems to have perfectly captured how Bernstein aged through the years.
@@samosullivan1744 hmm alright. I was hoping for more of a hybrid of the two. Will probably still watch it. I think they missed big that they didn’t add his Berlin performance that would have been a great ending scene.
There is a picture of Lenny at the funeral of his wife. He is over her casket looking as he is about to swoon. Lenny had betrayed his wife who was so dedicated to him. But he returned to her in her time of need and sought forgiveness. The picture captures his anguish. He was never the same.
Can't believe they reproduced the Mahler 2 performance at Ely Cathedral.
Great American filmmaking reminiscent of another time. This is what Hollywood should be pouring more out of its studios. This film looks ravishingly sublime and elegant. Can’t wait to see it!
Nah they mostly make cartoonish movies for the cartoon generation. Haven't you seen the latest Marvel 47???
@@upstatebernie4827- I knew I’d get a response like this. Apparently you haven’t seen the superhero fatigue going on, explaining why these Marvel/DC films are waning… badly. The ADD “cartoon crowd” you’re referring to are going to have to grow up and learn some real, moderately-paced culture eventually.
@@sfdudeca Nah. We need more comic book/cartoon movies.
@@jesseowenvillamor6348- Well, a world can’t be perfect.
@@sfdudeca It's not. So what's your point?
Wow! The whole trailer is set to the final movement of Mahler's 2nd.
They either shot on real film or someone did a great job capturing the film stock styles throughout the decades. If it’s digital, it’s hard to tell. Great job
They seem to have used Panavision cameras and lenses so that's right on point
They would have used the one camera, most likely a film camera, digitised and then created the looks in post.
It's shot on 35mm Film
Now THAT’S a trailer. Bravo.
That looks absolutely phenomenal. being a child of the 70s, and my parents being artsy fartsy types, Leonard Bernstein was constantly in my orbit. I can’t wait to see it, and put a living face on the legend
I can't wait to see this. Bernstein has been a major influence on my musical life since I was 6 and this looks absolutely breathtaking.
Oh how wonderful for you.
@@mariarohmer2374 yea im so happy for Stephen!!!
Did he compose or conduct mahler and Beethoven and more ?
@@MusicismoreImportant yes!!
I can smell how good this movie will be a mile away.
And everyone can see that you edited your comment.
Smell?
Sorry that was me..
I just farted.
How can a man turn into Bernstein so perfectly? By the looks of it, there is heart in this one, which is what the maestro himself had for music.
Any film featuring the finale of Mahler's (arguably Bernstein's favorite composer) 2nd 'Resurrection' symphony as prominently as this one seems to, is already halfway to being a truly great film before its even out
The trailer ITSELF is an experience. I've waited most of my life for something to show itself that paid respect to the world of classical music/composition. Lenny is a legend and im glad to see his story bought to light. Very deserving individual.
thought the same, but it turned out it is only clever marketing/ previews, the movie itself was weak and as a music admirer I regret wasting the friday evening in the cinema for it
Nobody can truly imitate Bernstein's conducting style, but Bradley Cooper is the only one who can come this close, and he nails everything else about Bernstein -- his look, his gait, his voice (different as he got older and the smoke got in it). Bradley Cooper may be America's Daniel Day Lewis, and he directed himself in this! Can't wait!
I got married on the day Bernstein died, and the rabbi looked just like Bernstein. I always thought that meant something. Can't wait to see this film!
When I was a teen in the 80's, I got to paint the servant's house on his property in Greenwich CT. I stayed the weekend with nobody there except my girlfriend who helped me, and the security guy who my father knew. (How I got the gig). The opening shot looks very much like the place. If so, the two structures were the servant's house on the right and his study cottage on the left. In that cottage, was an upright piano with an architectural draft board where he clipped his music. It also had a single sized cot in a small room - like a napping spot. Two things really struck me: 1) Above the piano on the wall was a narrow shelf with a few grammy awards... totally dusty. 2). He had a few prog-rock records from the band Yes! I never expected that. The house was another story. To this day, I think I should have kept the check with his signature. It was for $800. Probably would be worth a lot more now.
Yes was my favorite too. Thank you for sharing..
Wow, stunning story. Thank you for sharing!
OK, give Cooper the Academy Award for Best Actor ALREADY !!!! He is mesmerizing as Bernstein !!
That's probably the only reason why he did the film.
@@Garsons-oq4lhThat's good enough!
Cillian Murphy will get it
@@sp9459it’s still early to say.
@@sp9459 depends on whether the old academy members can still tell the difference between meaningless show-boating with zero nuance like Cooper or someone like Cillian, who carried the weight of the entire movie with a finely calibrated performance, sometimes just acting with his eyes and drawing the audience in. Cooper's eyes contain zero expression, if you look at Bernstein's warm eyes and charisma, it is blatantly obvious that you can't just scream or sob a line and think the audience is going to be impressed or feel something.
At 1:49 he really nailed that physical gesture
Bradley Cooper completely nailed the voice omg, can't wait to see it!!
He nailed everything about Berstein.
I thought it was actually Berstein.
I always thought the 1960s Leonard Bernstein looked like the 1990s Ian Mckellen. But Bradley Cooper does a fantastic job here - he really looks like the Maestro.
Can you imagine if Mckellen played Bernstein? But I have all my faith in Bradley Cooper, I'm sure he will make a great job.
Jamás me hubiese imaginado que Bradley Cooper dirigiera y protagonizara una película sobre Leonard Bernstein. Estoy impresionado. Tengo que verla!
Bradley Cooper is one of my favorite actors, but I'm also a big classical music boy (I'm 19) who admires Leonard Bernstein, I can tell that Bradley really did became Lenny, extraordinary makeup, he must have taken this role very seriously, it might be the role of his career so far, we're talking about one of the best music difussers and the first great american conductor (like they say in the trailer). Also, just like Lenny, Mahler is one of my favorite composers, there have been music pieces that made me cry, but the finale of Mahler 2 is THE ONE music piece that has made me cry THE MOST like never before, that hasn't happened me with any other music or any work of art.
I'm glad the official Lenny account in YT uploaded this, I will replay this trailer until the movie releases.
My ex met him on the street in NYC. Everything you would expect...total gentleman, filled to the brim with grace and dignity. Very very nice and kind.
I smell an Oscar nomination for Bradley and Carey already!
I barely watch films or TV anymore but this looks wonderful! Bradley’s passion shines through.
I always imagine that a movie about Leonard is going to be legendary 😍
My Bernstein moment was when he was receiving an award in Albany, NY. He stood in front of the huge crowd and lit a cigarette. Our eyes met and I scolded him for smoking. He smiled and shrugged his shoulders and mouthed” What can I do?” 😅
Finally Mahler being acknowledged as the EPIC composer he is. I am looking forward to seeing this movie.
Mahler was always recognized as an EPIC composer by the few and Bernstein led the Mahler Revival which led to pretty much everyone seeing it; one of the many gifts Bernstein gave us all.
@@waynesmith3767 Not always. After the 80s mostly
@@waynesmith3767 Nope, Bernstein did the promotion of Mahler after WWII in the US, but in Europe the revival happened much earlier with conductors like Willem Mengelberg, Otto Klemperer and Bruno Walter.
Mahler's second symphony is a nice touch for a movie about Bernstein
WOW!!!! They really make him look almost identical to Lenny. It is really difficult to do films on people that are alive in the age of TV because we know exactly how they looked and talked. This is a scarily identical Bernstein look.
Mahler’s 2nd symphony in the trailer!! I love Aufersteh’n. And the movie looks so exciting as well, deffo deserved for this legend of a guy.
So i think this begs the question, when will the world have a Mahler biopic?
There already is one, Ken Russell's Mahler from 1975. Although Ken Russell's composer biopics are more about capturing a feeling and zeitgeist than historical accuracy. But some of them are pretty good.
A new film about Mahler since his music has been featured in recent films would be awesome. But as mentioned, if you haven't seen it check out Ken Russel's Mahler, it's really good, though it would help to know some biographical information (Russel has a lot of metaphorical dream sequences in the film that might not make sense otherwise and some of them still don't quite line up with what I've read about the real Mahler). The actor playing Mahler does a pretty good job but leaves things out like his erratic walking style and skip, still it's all we've got so far..
In a hospital waiting room, so l had to watch this without the sound. Even so, the movements and gestures brought tears to my eyes. Can't wait.
There had to have been a bidding war for this film and Netflix winning it is insane.
I love it when people make movies that mean something ❤
Yes! Well said!
Ending of Mahler´s 2nd Symphony: the best soundtrack for a movie trailer ever
Hope Bradley gets an award or awards for this
This gave me chills. Amazing trailer.
The Mahler 2nd! YES! YES! ONE OF LENNY'S TRIUMPHS!! I'm not crying! You are!!
Especially love that one part where BC waves that wand thing around,
and the instruments are played. 🙌 I can't WAIT to see this!
when music hits your ears man, it just makes you want to clap after
Lenny loved to wave the wand around
@@DGNYY27 Wow, such subtle humour
@@voiceover2191 the film will be available in theaters and streaming and like Lenny I could go either way
First film I've wanted to see for years, and I'm not even a classical music devotee!! This trailer.... Fabulous music, gave me goosebumps.
The most respectful conductor to me! That's why I am so much moved whenever I listen to CDs of the collective symphonies he has been conducting the orchestras and recording.
I have followed Lenny around for 60 years and this trailer makes me cry every time I watch it. I watch the trailer every day because I have to wait for the film to come out.
This trailer makes me want to see the film more and more. I sincerely hope it sweeps accolades as Award season approaches...
You'd better see it first before you get your hopes up
@@timothybridgewater5795 I've read the available reviews and there's nothing but praise at a high level. That's enough for me.
@@timothybridgewater5795 you'd better not see it at all if you are really excited and into classical music, I went to see it in a cinema during its first days and I left shaking my head, hollow show-boating nonsense and almost nothing about music and Bernstein's work, more of a marriage drama with poor dialogue
Just incredible how well they achieved the physical resemblance to Bernstein. Looks fascinating.
Epic news, and long overdue. Finally, a biopic on Leonard Bernstein, one of the greatest American lives of the 20th Century.
I absolutely love how they used Mahler 2 in this!!!
On August 19, 1990, I went to Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts. Mr. Bernstein conducted Beethoven's Symphony No.7. He passed away two months later. I was a foreign student who came from Sapporo, Japan where he had founded Pacific Music Festival. His passion for music has been succeeded by PMF.
The Mahler Symphony No 2 finale, what a great choice!!!! Awesome!!
Wow
This has the Oscar written all over it for Bradley Cooper.
Looks amazing
It looks absolutely incredible. Probably another oscar worthy performance.
The ultimate tribute to the Greatest conductor, Leonard Bernstein
Mulligan did a Beautiful job of portraying Felicia. Bradley’s vocal mimicry of Bernstein’s voice was like nails on a chalkboard.
OK Mahler's 2nd, obvious choice. But the trailer opens with something way more interesting, one of the most hauntingly beautiful melodies Bernstein ever composed, the oboe solo at the end of Act 1 of his final opera "A Quiet Place". More than thrilled for this movie...!!
As soon as I heard Mahler’s 2nd I started crying.
As a musician I am always nervous with these sort of films but… this really really looks amazing❤❤❤❤
Christmas of '89 was my introduction to Bernstein and Beethoven. I watched the performance of Beethoven's 9th live (the special performance to mark the fall of Berlin Wall) and i was recently introduced to music as i was learning the clarinet in 7th grade. I've been a classical music aficionado ever since.
Mahler's 2nd was lovely. Hopefully, the rest of the film will be as well.
Mahler 2 Finale at the end, absolutely EPIC
That shadow looming over Carey Mulligan is overwhelming. Probably the biggest shadow I ever seen.
A movie that I actually want to watch. ❤
Lenny and Mahler - two creative minds separated by time and space.
It must be a fantastic story of my favorite Maestro ! ❤
To pick Mahler's 2nd symphony's finale as the trailer music is genius.
Bernstein was one of the main avatars for what I have looked for in life - and in men. A unique brilliance. I know why some people fall in love with a person like Bernstein. It has nothing to do with self destruction. It has to do with understanding passion. In all its forms. And who a person really is. And who one is. I am looking forward to this film.
Thousands of people getting exposed to the glorious and religious ecstasy that is the finale of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony.
Omfg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mahlerrrreeeerrere!!!!!!!!!! Mahiiii mahlassaaaaa mahleeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!
Best actor female Carey best actor male Bradley and best director Bradley. Best movie !
Amazing that it takes less than 3 minutes of Mahler 2 to make me cry....every time. Cant wait to see this!
Looks like a stunning movie. A real gem.
Best movie trailer I’ve ever seen
wow, I honestly thought for a moment that they were using some lost footage of an interview that Bernstein had done. Looking forward to seeing this. Bradley looks amazing.
This movie looks incredible. ❤
Bradley is coming for that Oscar. 🌟
This is just a trailer and already so mesmerizing. Unbelievable.
Day Lewis as Scrooge is literally the best casting idea of all time Bennett Miller is a genius at casting. This is too exciting to be honest 🤶
The nose alone will win the Oscar.
I cannot wait to see this I love classical music I'm a huge Bernstein fan and I love Cooper and Mulligan
I’m thirsting for Carey Mulligan’s performance, looks promising.
Holy shit Bradley Cooper really does look like Leonard when he was young
Prosthetics helped though.
@@TheFreeThinkingMan Its not that. Its the way he talks and how his eyes lits up in emotions. Eerie

Great Bradley, Great Bernstein 🤩🌹♥️
