  • This video documents the first thousand foot vessel built for the great lakes; Stewart J. Cort downbound on the St Mary's River loaded with taconite (The only thing she can load) for Indiana Harbor which has been the normal route since the start of her career in 1971. She has a #1 posted on the stern to resemble her being the first thousand footer to be built for the Great Lakes.
Coming Downbound she two single horn salutes at the rock cut. As she blew her second salute. my Tripod sadly fell over almost landing in the water however, I had a VERY lucky save and still got a decent audio of the upclose salute. From where I was standing the majority of the time allowed my camera to get the true size of the behemoth. I will defiantly be recording from Rock cut more often!
M/V Stewart J. Cort was the first 1000-foot vessel on the Great Lakes when she entered service for Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1972. Her bow and stern sections, built by Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Mississippi, were joined together and called “Stubby” for the trip to the Great Lakes. At Erie Marine, Erie, Pennsylvania, “Stubby” was cut apart and joined with the midbody built there. The Cort is the only 1000-footer with pilot house forward. All crew accommodations are also forward. Her self-unloading system’s shuttle boom is contained within the after cabin structure. Interlake Leasing III secured the bareboat charter of the Cort in 2005.
