We did that trip back 2016. My wife & I in one cabin; my son and his wife in the other. Cindy didn't sleep well 'cause of all the stopping and slowing and swaying and noise. I noticed it too but I don't sleep that well anyway, so it was no big deal. Kinda like being on an aircraft carrier after a 12 hour watch in radio/comm and then having flight ops going on above your head (which I enjoyed immensely ;-) ). Then at one point I realized that the ride had gotten much smoother. I checked my GPS. We had crossed into Spain. . . . That said, I loved Portugal. Still do. I've taken the Portuguese trains up and down the country & coast. Beautiful service, good trains, fine people & staff. I'd do that trip again if it weren't for the plague, my age now and money all the time. But I have to say that the Spanish rails were smoother. . . . To those headed to Portugal and Iberia thinking of doing this train ride: Do it. Just do it. It's part of the adventure and it will be well worth the trip. Quite a nice treat for this old polyglot to eat dinner in Portuguese and then have breakfast in Castilian.
Thanks for sharing your experience! I've been considering this as an option for my journey through the region come September and it looks to be a really nice experience.
Portugal and Spain and in Schengen area, that works as a single country visa-wise, so typically there won't be any border control. They do make random checks sometimes on trains and road crossings but those happen once in a blue moon really. I never saw one myself and have crossed the border a few times.

Beautiful landscapes!
Thank you sharing this beautiful journey! Is there any checkpoint or control at Portugal Spain border, where they check for passport or visas???
Thanks for your comment. Portugal - Spain are within the Schengen area and there was no passport control traveling between those countries.

Planning on the reverse route, Mardid to Coimbra.
Portugal doesn't maintain tracks to match Spain's standards?
