Tarantino version: Make a full blood bag bodysuit that contains approximately six gallons of blood to equally spread over an actor’s entire body. Line the inside of the blood suit with approximately eight Claymore directional proximity explosive mines, with proximity function disabled and replaced by remote detonation charge. Dress up actor in Elven mithril mail bodysuit first. Then equip Claymore bloodbag suit over it. Then equip regular clothes. Then, set up civil war cannons loaded with blood all around the edge of the camera’s frame, aiming towards the actor. Have a Helitack crew in the air, directly above the actor, in a forest fire chopper that’s filled its tank with blood instead of water. Place dead pigs injected with 100 gallons of blood each over every square foot of flooring in the scene, with each pig corpse stuffed with a 2 lb brick of C4 connected to a remote detonator. Have opposing actor fire one round towards the first actor. Detonate every single thing all at once.
There's some very good reasons to do it in post. Blood is ridiculously messy, doesn't always look right. Very difficult to control. But then again nothing in filmmaking is "easy"
OMGosh! Never ever have I had blood splattering make me smile and laugh ! This was great FILMMAKING! Wow... Filmmaker IQ is as fresh as when I discovered it years ago. Bravo Mr. Hess and crew ! You all ROCK! sbf
Any suggestions on making it more air tight? I followed all the instructions and have all the same equipment but when I release the co2 it make a really high pitched noise and not a lot of air comes out the cut out hole
I don't think duct tape is airtight. wrap the threads in thread tape first and if you want you can take vinyl electric tape and go over the seam really really tight
It looks like both squibs fired at once. Can you make them sequentially fire with that rig? Or would you need a separate compressor/CO2 inflator for each squib?
What do you mean reliability? It always releases gas when you fire it. I can't say anything about the reliability of anything you attach to it. That's why you have to test.
So for the double tube effect, did you split them from a single tube or did you just use two separate air triggers and pushed them at the same time? I'm doing a gag that requires two points of blood and wondering if I could use like a "T" or "Y" connector off of one tube.
where do I store the gas before activating the blow gun? the video doesn't go into much depth of all the couplings and how they were put together. Only showed a few shots and went on to the next bit. If it's still confusing then ill describe it like this. the compressed air has to be somewhere before I set the blow gun off making the air go through the tube...
+Max Oliver the bigger concern there is accidentally shooting the eye if your squib gets misoriented. But that goes for anything done near the face. Otherwise it should be safe in the neck region but use caution when near the face.
Honestly you either just source it all on Amazon or go to a local hardware store. You don't need to follow my exact dimensions, you just need something that fits together.
I was going to comment that this didn't look realistic with the colour of the blood and the way it spurted out, but then I realised that I've never actually seen someone get shot.
Any chance you have direct links to the parts? It seems as tho whomever edited this used the wrong images for some of the adapters and the descriptions don't make it easy to find everything. Doesn't look like my local Lowes or Home Depot have the parts which I find hard to believe. *shrug*
I edited this and these are not mislabeled. Home Depot and Lowe's aren't great for this sort of thing unfortunately - they're not very complete in their collection. Purchasing online is the easiest -- I have a hardware store that's a bit more completest near me (Ace Hardware).
I didn't expect to see a very serious director Andrzej Wajda, as a pioneer of blood squibs! Cool video but it seems some of your test shot were better than the end result. I think the blood is too watery, it looks like juice.
It's the same blood formula as used in the test shots. I think it has to do with the lighting - when it's back lit like that it doesn't quite have the same look. Also maybe sent too much pressure through the system. Well, you can learn from my attempts. I can't wait to see your video when you submit it here! :): filmmakeriq.com/courses/make-air-powered-blood-squibs/
I don't have the need to make this type of blood explosion right now, especially since it's a bit of DIY work and I'm not good at this stuff (hot glue? Yikes!). I'm eager to try other type of blood squid though. I read (or saw) about squibs made with condoms and glued washers tied to a string so you can rip them out. It's a different effect, not as explosive but I think it can be very good with some clever editing. Or maybe not. As you said, it's about trying and getting experience.
awesome vid, man. all your vid are soo helpful. LOVEDD the short at the end -btw, how did you do that little "hiding-behind-the-tree" effect? ...or am I an idiot and he actually fit behind the tree. thanks
@@FilmmakerIQ In “The 4-D Man” horror movie the scene of him passing through a stone wall in the jail was done using a split screen . When I watched it as a kid I wondered how they did that. Thanks.
No need to follow exactly my settings - go with whatever is standard in metric - you might have a bear trying to find a 9mm as opposed to a more standard 10mm for example.
Yeah, nobody should be learning how to use explosive squibs from a RUclips video - learn from a licensed professional. I've seen too many stupid people on RUclips try to DIY their own explosives. They don't look that good and they usually end up hurting themselves.
Burnlan most of these are not measurements but components. When you build your own system you have to find parts that are similar but you will not be using equivalents
The imperial system exists because it's really easy to estimate things with and this comes from a guy that won gold for Metric Mastery in Science Olympiad in middle school. As far as Metric equivalent - on the parts of the compressor, it won't do any good - you just have to design it using your own metric components and disregard my parts.
It's easy to estimate things with it because you are used to it. No offense, but to any non-American, 6mm is a lot easier to understand and estimate than 1/4"
Can you please stop disappear and continue making great videos like this!!!!!

Filmmaker IQ this is great news :)
Wow, this is exciting news Mr. Hess! I can only imagine that I speak for a large group of people when I say we love your videos!! :-)
@@FOXTROTUNIT1639 lol
A good rule of thumb for any in-camera effect is to plan for three takes. One to screw up, one for camera and one as a backup.
I do four takes.

8:12 Lol, did nobody catch "It helps if the scissors are pre-stained with blood, as it reminds the talent of who's REALLY in charge"
I did, and it got me by surprise.
He was so nonchalant about it.
Very informative and I LOVED the short at the end. Thanks again.
Glad you are back, John! I‘ve learned a lot from your videos increasing my knowledge and improving my skills. Thank you a lot, dude!! :-D
This is absolutely fantastic practical tutorial. Thank you!
Now THIS is the video I've been waiting for! Thank you for this!
Man, we missed you. Glad to have you back!

That was a cute video...a big two thumbs up. Please don't disappear again!
So now I know why you always wear a red shirt. No blood stains. Very clever.
Seriously, another very nice piece.
I really enjoy your videos. Your presentation is perfect for me. Please keep making videos.
Very interesting. ive never seen a vid where the blood was done practically. Most folks do it in post. Thanks John! :)

Awesome ending !!
i don't even make movies but this channel is so damn interesting.

Great Vid... Thank you for producing awesome content!
😂 that alian scene had me weak lmai i like that nice work i definitely learn so much out of this . thsnks
Thanks, Gospel John!

Hey John, I was wondering what size the threaded end was on the 3/8 Barb? Is the threaded side 1/8” or 1/4”?
Honestly don't remember probably 1/4
@@FilmmakerIQ awesome! Thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate your time!
Where can I get the inflator called, I.e what’s it called on amazon
CO2 bicycle Tire inflator I think it's what you're after
Nice LOGO animation
Bloody good!
Triple cut. Nice.
This has the feel of a Roadrunner cartoon with gore.
It looks like both squibs fired at once. Can you make them sequentially fire with that rig? Or would you need a separate compressor/CO2 inflator for each squib?
On that setup they _should have_ fired independently...
But welcome to world of special effects ;)
Please confirm me about the reliability of co2 tire inflator? will it be good for this effect? Please tell me.
What do you mean reliability? It always releases gas when you fire it. I can't say anything about the reliability of anything you attach to it. That's why you have to test.
Hehe, loving the blood stains on the air compressor's gauges!
Is there a way to get more blood to squirt out? Like for example a gwar show amount.
Use a bigger reservoir of blood and a thicker line. :)

I believe we did two separate triggers
doing sfx for friends senior thesis could someone shoot me a list of links for the equipment please?

How many grams is the CO2 cartridge used in the bike tire inflator?

Great tutorial, but you should change the cartoon thumbnail. I almost didn't watch this thinking this was a technique for animated films.
Pffffttt lmao
Where are the other episodes you guys announced you would do this year? You already did a fake blood one...
They did one on making fake blood, this is one making the "being shot" effect.
Like for Wajda! Thank you! :)
To be honest I think it just be cheaper to have the tube. The blood. And just have a crew member blow through the tube offscreen
Try it.
Though you get that explosive effect. I think it would be more like a squirt than a pop.
I'd really appreciate the metric equivalent of the measurments in parenthesis next to the imperial measurments. Great video otherwise !
