Wahoo the first day of Torchwood! Just so you all know the roadmap - the first two eps of Torchwood will be in a row and then I will be alternating Torchwood and Doctor Who s3! I’m a month ahead on my patreon! patreon.com/emmereacts
I love Torchwood for the most part , but also can't wait for you to watch season 3 and 4 of doctor who some really great episodes
My biggest criticism of this show can be the first season, especially leaning more into "edgy" than mature at times. But when Torchwood hits its highs, those are some amazing highs, possibly some of the best sci-fi drama you'll ever see. Also, you WILL be crying in a few of these episodes, and you WILL be going "oh come on Jack, because as tye series goes on you will see this man do some messed up stuff, or be shown that in the past he's done some really messed up stuff. For the greater good of course, but pretty messed up, people died or worse happened. He's an interesting protagonist. There will come a point where even you, as the viewer, will be just fed up with Jack's BS along with Gwen. You'll see past the swagger, the tricks that charm, and can't wait.
@@nedzed3663not to spoil anything but season 3 of torchwood really seems like the perfect encapsulation of doctor who’s adult themes pushed to their greatest extent
@unclekarl5219 Oh, Children of Earth is peak Torchwood, but it's a tough watch. That shit is dark
You got the days around the wrong way, should've been Torchwood Tuesdays =P
Jack isn't the only returning character from Doctor Who. Tosh appeared in the episode Aliens of London.. She's the one examing the pig when she meets the ninth Doctor.
An extra bit of lore on this is that in Aliens of London, Tosh was filling in for Owen who was hungover
@jacobcurle8964 this is revealed later in torchwood. Such a great throw away line of dialogue
So, Gwen is played by the actress Eve Myles, who also portrayed Gwyneth in the Unquiet Dead where the Cardiff Rift was introduced.
Also, Toshiko Sato makes her second appearance here. The character, portrayed by the same actress, previously appeared in Aliens of London where she was examining the pig "alien" created by the Slitheen.
Technically according to DW Lore, Eve's characters are the same person
The spot with the perception filter is because it's where the Tardis was in the "Boom Town" episode of Doctor Who
...Or at least, that's Jack's theory. =:o}
Ohhhhhhh i never thought of that, thats an interesting theory! It could be like, the power of the rift could have pulled the perception filter powers from the tardis and placed them permanently on that spot
John Barrowman was born in Scotland. His parents moved to the US and he grew up in Joiet, near Chicago. That explains his "midwest" accent with a touch of Scottish that pops out.
His Sister lives in Minnesota. He lives in Palm Springs, CA too.

As a Doctor Who fan who’s only seen maybe 1 or 2 seasons of Torchwood, I’m honestly relieved that you “selfishly” want to keep watching Doctor Who and alternate like that 😅 Since most reaction channels do drop Doctor Who for Torchwood for a while. So yay! I like your plan and I’m excited to see continued Doctor Who reactions.
Thank you!!
You should watch the third season. Skipping the fourth isn't an issue.
Series 3 of Torchwood is the best of the show and some of the best of all of the Whoniverse, it can be straight up watched on its own if you don't want to have to refresh or anything like that.
how did you not watch season 3 it’s genuinely one of the best pieces of television
I like that if you rearrange the letters in torchwood you can spell doctor who.
"Torchwood" being an anagram of "Doctor Who" was a deliberate decision. When they were working on bringing back the show from its decades-long hiatus for the 2005 revival, they used this anagram for secrecy, to throw off possible leaks.
low level employees who were fans of Dr. Who used Torchwood as cover name to hide old episodes, because BBC had a policy of rerecording new content on old episodes and the higher ups hated the show so they targeted Dr. Who specifically.
You probably knew this, but that's how they came up with the name Torchwood. They moved the letters around.
@@Matej_Sojka That's not true. "Torchwood" was just the code name for "Doctor Who" when they were in the process of reviving the show between 2003-2005. It's got nothing to do with the Classic era, or protecting episodes from being wiped. Wiping episodes of TV shows was common up until the late 1970s in the UK (basically to save money and storage space), and it didn't only affect programme that the higher-ups "hated", which wasn't really the situation with Doctor Who until the mid-1980s anyway.
@@ethanray4279 Doctor Who was singled out by BBC suits to be rewritten. The revival used Torchwood as tongue in cheek reference to the classic era as most of the "lost" episodes that were recovered in good quality were the reels labeled Torchwood from BBC archives. There are other sources like foreign tv stations that had a few episodes here and there and the taped episodes by public, but most of those are not in good quality anymore. There are books and books about this, if you want to look into this deeper I suggest starting with Almanac of Doctor Who fanclub history volume 2 and 3
Remember when Rose carried the power of the TARDIS? When Jack was killed by the Daleks, she didn't say "Come back to life!", she said "No death!" And so he is immortal.
“At least he didn’t bring any technology home”
finally, someone reacts to Torchwood...
Thanks a lot....
Few little things to answer some of your questions
1. Cardiff bay is used in boom town when the TARDIS refuels, it's uses rift energy, the same rift Torchwood are trying to keep under control
2. Torchwood is damp and haphazardly set up because this is the "new" Torchwood after the battle in the season final you just watched
3. They also look different because the season 2 finale happened at the Torchwood 1 in London, this is the Torchwood 3 in Cardiff Wales that captain jack sort of rebuilt from scratch after Torchwood went down in season 2s season finale
4. You'll find out more about why captain jack Harkness is called that in Torchwood as it goes on :) especially in season 2 if you watch it 😊
I’ve always taken it that Torchwood HQ’s are like regional offices, Torchwood 1 - London was the head office, and the others are just outposts. Because we see the Cardiff Hub being used in flashbacks that are set before the Battle of Canary Wharf. ☺️
It is that incident from Boomtown that caused that exact spot to have a perception filter on it in the first place
@@ChibiHoshiDragon the rift exists there already we first hear of it in the unquiet dead episode with the gelf, Gweneth never actually closes the rift she just destroys the gelf, so I think the rift just exists naturally but the situation with the gelf and the story in boomtown where the slitheen opened up the rift, I think thats when it started causing more problems because it was opened/fractured more
@@ChibiHoshiDragon I think the perception filter just exists on top of the rift in specific places, I don't think it's to do with the TARDIS standing there because it was parked further away
2. No, it's not new; it's been a Torchwood site for a very long time! Some of the leaks are probably just due to the sheer age of that building. =:o}
Been years since I’ve seen Torchwood so I’ll definitely be watching your reactions to help remind myself of the specifics of what happened lol
As someone who lives 2 minutes from torchwood tower in Cardiff, I am EXCITED
I used to as well, the Kebab shop on James Street was actually the pizza shop next to 6 James Street where I lived.
@@docksider I'm not sure it's there now 😔
@@nathanrsmv I thought it might be gone, is the bookies still there?
@@docksider Ladbrokes is there if that's the one?
@@nathanrsmv Yes that is the one
When I saw you’re watching torchwood I about peed myself with excitement 🎉🎉
So excited to see you react to this series, it's such an amazing Dr Who "Spin-off". I think alternating the episodes should be fine, some major events (No spoilers) will line up roughly at the right time to give you some extra context here and there.
I think this first episode of Torchwood was a very good way to introduce the audience who might be coming in from doctor who and new fans as a whole. Gwen is the audience surrogate in this episode and being introduced into this world which is very different. Russel wrote this episode and i think he does a great job.
Torchwood was also the codename for filming in the first series of Doctor Who which is a anagram. I do also like during this time the Whoniverse had something for everyone with kids watching Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who for the family and Torchwood for a mature audience. It was a great time to be a fan like me who was watching all three at the time lol
Burn Gorman who plays Owen is in tonnes of things - torchwood, bleak house, dark knight rises, ballad of songbirds and snakes and loooaaaads of stuff - he’s excellent!
He was also in Game Of Thrones
He's also in the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel.
Other than here, in everything else I’ve seen him in he always plays an antagonist character: Murtry in the expanse; Karl Tanner in Game of Thrones; & “Adam” in Forever.
I think i recognized him from dark knight rises!!
@@martynhill3479 karl “fookin” tanner xD cant believe i forgot to mention him
I love this show so much, thanks for watching it
love torchwood they have some great seasons.
Torchwood is a great companion series to Doctor Who and just fyi TW gets into really dark subject matter at times and can get more graphic
Without spoiling anything, it's recommended to finish Torchwood Series 1 before Doctor Who 3x10, it clearly takes place after the end of Series 1.
I think you mean 3x11, "Utopia"...?
Gwen cooper is the actress that played gwyneth in season 1 the unquiet dead the one with Charles Dickens.
Try again the actress that plays Gwen. Also Touchwood is a bit naughty lol
I'm Welsh lol
Thanks for doing this alongside Dr Who
I'm really happy you decided to alternate between DW and Torchwood instead of just focusing on Torchwood! I've only watched one episode of Torchwood (this one), but since you're reacting to it, I might as well work my way up as well. This episode was really fun and the reveal about Jack was very unexpected... I liked the way they explained everything in here with the whole "the right kind of doctor". Can't wait to see more of your reactions to the Whoniverse, so far they've been great and very entertaining.
I just watched the first season for the first time and was shocked how good it was - interested to start watching reactions to it now.
"Gwen" is a returning doctor who actor , she played the maid who died in the 1900s episode in doctor who year one , charles dickens episode. That is why she got asked the | have you seen ghosts | from the dispatcher .
*1800s
you were right, the place they are at is the same place in the doctor who episode boomtown, where they did the whole rift thing, also same rift as the season 1 episode 3 rift with gwenith, which is gwens relative (same actor)
Well this was a nice surprise.
The Torchwood Fountain is the Water fountain across from the Convention Center (Millennium Center) in Cardiff Bay. Been There. Fan Boy'd it.
Can't wait for you to find out more about Jack.
Not sure if anyone pointed this out, but if you rearrange the letters of Doctor Who, it spells Torchwood.
Before they brought Doctor Who back in 2005, they were real tight-lipped about what they were planning, so they codenamed the plans "Project Torchwood". I guess they thought it do clever, they ran with it for this show as well.
My favourite is torchwood being secret, and the random old lady saying “bloody touchwood” as they drive past in their car with the flashing lights
If my memory is correct, I think that building in the mirror was from the series one episode of Doctor Who, titled Boom Town.
In it, the Doctor, Rose, and Jack stop in Cardiff to recharge(?) the Tardis.
Excellent reaction. Should be a wild and interesting ride 😊
@emme Torchwood Season 1 ends directly before Season 3 Episode 11 "Utopia"
emme. torchwood. what better combo. welcome to the ride. takes awhile to warm up but as i call it its the adult doctor who.
Jubilee Pizza, named for Rob Sherman's Doctor Who Novel, "Jubilee" which was a DALEK novel.
"Jubilee" was not a novel. "Jubilee" was a Big Finish audio drama featuring the Sixth Doctor and the Daleks.
I did enjoy this show when it came out - it has great dynamic between interesting characters.
Torchwood is a great series, though a bit patchy in the first season. The third season (which is a 5 part mini series) is an absolute masterpiece.
I think every self respecting DW fan should watch both Torchwood AND The Sarah Jane Adventures. While TW is the dark “adult” companion series, SJA is aimed at kids and is more light hearted (though that’s not to say it doesn’t take serious themes). Together they provide a balance either side of DW. I strongly recommend watching SJA as well, maybe starting after series 3 of DW.
That Torchwood hub location was from Boom Town in Doctor Who series 1 (with Margaret, the Slitheen) - that's where you recognise it from.
I always find it funny when they say Jack can't die. Clearly he can die -- repeatedly.
Yayyy I’m so excited 🫶🫶🫶
‘Owen’ plays the villain well and is in loads of stuff, that’ll be why you recognise him.
Weird fact Torchwood in terms of when the idea for it started is actually before the doctor who relaunch and was the creators attempt to create an American style show similar to Buffy
Torchwood was a code name for Doctor Who when it was in development. It is an anagram.
Torchwood also explores "what about the times when the Doctor is busy? And can't always be there to handle everything coming our way?"
Good plan! They do interconnect somewhat. (Same universe.) (One way to do this is look up broadcast dates when it was released.)
I did not see Torchwood until after Series 3 but I did see Torchwood Series 2 before Doctor Who Series 4.
About the perception filter... once upon a time, the Tardis landed on that spot. I think it was a Slitheen episode, but the Tardis experienced a surge.
Torchwood was made by Queen Victoria. After the werewolf episode of The Doctor.
John barrowman was born in scotland, raised in Illinois
The only other thing I have seen the actor who plays Owen (guy who used the pheromone spray) was in a one season TV show called Forever.
Great reaction! I'm really looking forward to getting back into Torchwood along with you. BTW your hair looks fantastic!
If there’s one thing you can count on with torchwood: if there’s a roof, Jack will stand on top of it
What is happening is your catch phrase.
John barrowman is actually Scottish not American he was 15 when him and his parents went to live in America. He still to this day can speak in his fluent Scottish accent and an American accent he's not allowed to speak in an American accent at his parents house he tells a funny story about his mother always threatened him if he used his American accent so he's only allowed to speak Scottish around her.
the original Torchwood was destroyed in Dr Who last end of season - with the Daleks and Cybermen. There were a couple special offices like the Cardiff one which is all that was left.
The alternating definitely works. You want to get to the end of Series 2 of TW before the end of Series 4 of DW. You should also watch TW Series 3 (5 episode miniseries) in one hit but we're a little way off that.
Definitely a different tone on this one
Be prepared. Torchwood is a little bit more to it than Doctor Who so get ready and the next episode is a bit to awkward. lol
And series 1 is a bit of a mess but some of the episodes are really good.
Oooh someone reacting to Torchwood!
Jack Living: Rose. It was Rose. :)
We promise, only this season is like this. Eveyrthing after this is the best in history,
Eve Myles (Gwen). You have seen her before... Doctor Who :"The Unquiet Dead" anyone? :)
The Immortal Captain Jack,... thank you Rose (series one finale)
I recommend going by release date. You don't want one show to spoil the other in the few places it can.
Okay, I'm surprised you started Torchwood at just the right time to start the series
Glad you'll be alternating between the shows,
As someone who watched all of Torchwood on release, i'll be honest looking backit's a bit mixed, especially the first season with some real misses.
Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who.
Jack greatest super hero ever lol
13:50 - "Why do they just have a pterodactyl flying around?"
You wouldn't want them to keep the poor thing in a little cage, would you? =:o]
Even more complicated is the excellent "Sarah Jane Adventures" series that runs alongside Doctor Who. (After "School Reunion".) There are some follow up plot lines or characters that cross over. Watch Torchwood series 2 before Doctor Who series 4. Again the broadcast dates may be best way to do this.
Bad Wolf made Jack immortal.
13:22 …because its Wales.
For you it was Criminal Minds. For me it was CSI: Torchwood! I think this is more "adult" or "mature" because there are "curse" words as well as some of the themes. If you like shows like this, you might like Primeval.
You are definitely watching this + doctor who it the correct way. I would also recomened doing the same thing with season 2 of torchwood after doctor who series 3, as well as the first series of 'the sarah jane adventures' also after series 3 of doctor who
Torchwood was originally conceived as a Buffy The Vampire Slayer spin off until the BBC asked Russell T Davies to make a Doctor Who spin off so he took the idea and made Torchwood out of that
Great reaction.
Finishing Torchwood s1 before 3x10 of Who is the way this is supposed to be viewed. Then s4 of Doctor Who and s2 of Torchwood are directly concurrent, finishing s2 before the 2 part finale of Who. Then Torchwood s3 and 4 are mostly self contained.
Jack, that guy has a good face
Owen the guy with love cologne was the bad guy in Enola Holmes, and the TV show Forever
I got dr.who season 15 part 1 done. Part 2 starts around Christmas.
This first show looks good. I didn’t see torchwood. Not sure why.
Torchwood is more up-and-down than Doctor Who, but it has some great episodes (and one absultely incredible series). Hope you enjoy it and don't get put off by the rougher eps!
Burn Gorman, (Owen) was in Pacific Rim Uprising, the expanse, and Halo. Perhaps you recognize him form one of those? movies and show?
Torchwood was post watershed allowing to stray into US R-Rating territory. Also, as it was targeting a more mature audience the writers could go more dark, more gritty and, obviously, explore more sexual content. Parts of it are brilliant but there are also a few stories that fell a bit flat. I loved it and hope you do too.
You are in for a wild ride.
"Torchwood 4 went missing, we'll find it someday." I wonder if that's meant to be an homage to the excellent Babylon 5. (Babylon 4 went missing)
Yesss the degeneracy begins!
Season 1: edgy trying to be adult scifi series that hits its stride at the end
Season 2: classic torchwood
Season 3: best scifi put to screen other than a handful of doc who episodes
Season 4: mid
The Sarah jane adventures are super cool too,
Its honestly not too kiddy, I honestly like her spin off more than torchwood.
Before season 4 of doctor who you would also need to watch the 1st season of Sarah Jane adventures
Real talk, I don't think you even need to see ALL of the torchwood episodes to be able to do a Doctor Who relevant run.
The "perfect viewing order" between the two shows isn't super important. What you want is to finish Torchwood Season 1 before you reach the 3rd last episode of Doctor Who Season 3. Preferably right before it (so Torchwood Season 1 Episode 13 right before you hit Doctor Who Season 3 Episode 11).
Based on how you described your plan, if you double up the last 2 episodes of Torchwood, you'll hit it on the money.
I kinda miss the captain Jack character however the last season of Torchwood was just WEIRD so its no surprise it didn't continue.
Would you consider reacting to Sarah Jane adventures? I would highly recommend watching, alongside doctor who I loved that show as a kid and still love to rewatch as an adult. Also, thanks for another great reaction!
You should ideally watch the last episode of Torchwood series 1 immediately before the Doctor Who Series 3's 3 part finalé
I am assuming you will not react to The Sarah Jane Adventures, which is the second spin-off during that time. That one is the opposite of Torchwood in that it's geared toward the younger side of Doctor Who audiences.
Think you'll like Torchwood, especially the Jack Harkness episodes - he's a great character...
Makes sense to balance of releases of videos for sure. Yeah S2 is more to be careful for Torchwood S1 I think is fine to watch. But S2 events happen of S4 of Doctor Who as we see events aftermath aline that way.
Doctor Who S1 Jack has been invincible since then pretty sure. Yeah Doctor Who S3 spoilers otherwise.
Yeah the building top/perception filter lift are pretty funny.
Yep opening positions, free pizza too. XD
Ah special alien expert teams very much curiosity.
Yeah the accent part just get used to it easy. XD
Yeah the glass building in Boom Town S1 Doctor Who. Yeah S3 Doctor Who spoilers if I say anything else. But if go in blind for Torchwood it's fine. Just treat it like it's own thing.
Ah right Tosh was in the Slitheen S1 E4 episode. Gwen, Jack, but new of Owen and forget the other. It's a fair cast and fair themes/humour.
Yeah Torchwood in Doctor Who S2 is a different one to this Torchwood.
Honor code, always taking something out of the office. XD
Yeah Slitheen ship Big Ben, Cannery Whorf I think was S2 Doctor Who..... I forget.
Torchwood versions reminds me of Warehouse 13 even if that show I think was same time or came later.
Jack knows his stuff, the great writing and yep can she be trusted hmm.
Yeah computers, she should have written it on paper they wouldn't risk tracking her home, best not typing it and remote access. But drawing the blade and back again.
Yeah what weird moments using the spray or other things in the show.
Yeah pizza delivery is wild but they were in on it then finding a name of the people to track down besides just Jack, Torchwood hmm, business pizza.
Yep gadgets in this series are as fun as Doctor Who or other shows.
Such a weird line, then it made sense the reference. Right Doctor Who S3 spoilers. Well if you know the character and the context from S3 but the other parts being S1 of Doctor Who some news. What a complicated reference to not say anything about. XD Yeah it makes sense why this is set after Doctor Who S3 and between S3 and S4 S1-2 of Torchwood. As far as I remember. I watched Torchwood like way later and before reactions of Doctor Who so going on what I remember and seeing these episodes again like 1-2 years later then when I saw them the first time.
Yeah the blood/swearing and some relationship tension push the rating for sure.
The Chibnall ones (at least for character moments or tension at least from what I remember) to made sense why it had a teen or adult rating besides the blood in some scenes of the show (besides Doctor Who tension scenes). As the rest are pretty much just doctor who episodes and not sure if blood but the Chibnall ones have weird character moments in them that were odd to me.
I think making a more adult doctor who is fair though.
S3 is bad and S4 is probably fine I just couldn't stand it even besides the S3 format being so bad 5 episodes, 5hrs of drama and bad aliens/plot.
13:50 Why wouldn' t they have a pterodactyl? They're nice pets
Since you’re now reacting to Doctor Who content that’s not just “New Who” (the main show ), any chance you could occasionally react to “Classic Who” (Doctor Who content from before 2005)? If you do, I recommend:
- “Genesis of the Daleks” where the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) and Sarah Jane are sent to the Dalek homeworld of Skaro and see a mad scientist Davros create the Daleks.
- “The Pyramids of Mars”, another 4th Doctor and Sarah Jane story where they face an alien that inspired an Egyptian god, robot mummies, etc.
- The 1996 Doctor Who TV movie starring Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor. The movie was an attempt to revive the franchise before New Who, it didnt work but McGann is still a great Doctor
That one piece of pavement has a perception filter because that’s where the TARDIS was during Boom Town, when the Slitheen with the surfboard tried to blow up the world. It’s a blink-and-you-miss-it reference that weirdly stops being relevant after this one episode.
