Many years ago when I was only about 19, I had left a party at my boyfriend’s apartment at about midnight. It was a very small town and the roads were empty. I stopped at a red light at an intersection and another car was stopped on the opposite side (he had the green light). A man got out and was waving me over saying his friend needed help. I could see a dark figure that looked slumped over, but I didn’t get out. The man who was waving me over kept walking towards my car but I took off fast. Never did find out if they truly needed help or not, but I had a strong feeling it was a trap and went with it!

You did the right thing. Seriously, what could you have done that the man couldn’t do for himself? You have a car, and he has a car. Either way, the hospital is the same distance for both of you.

Three tricks to get you out of your car, besides the fake flat tire:
1)Few raw eggs thrown on your windshield while you are driving. If you turn on the wipers, you will be automatically blinded and forced to stop. Smudged raw eggs on glass do not easily wash away! ACTION: Do NOT turn on the wipers! Drive to a safe place asap, seeing the best you can through your dirty windshield!
Same if you find raw eggs on your windshield in a parking lot. Do NOT clean them right there! Get in your car and drive away. You are about to get robbed!
2)The car behind you, very lightly rear-ends you in a lonely street. ACTION: Ignore it and drive to a safe place asap! If you stop you will get robbed!
3)A garbage can, a box, or a tree branch blocking an isolated road. Even a car stopping in front of you for no reason and with no other cars around. ACTION: Throw your car in reverse IMMEDIATELY and back the heck out of there! If you stop and think… it will be too late!
These may sound like right out of a gangster or train robbery movie. However, all three have been put to action in lonely dark roads in Southeastern Europe!

Once, maybe a decade ago, I realized a couple in a work van were following me. The man yelled that my rear tire was almost flat. I ran a red light and so did he. I drove directly to the 116th precinct, pulled right up to the stairs and leaned on my horn continuously. When an officer stepped out, the van hightailed it out of there. They caught them only two blocks away. I was asked to come inside to file a report. They later had me pick them out of a line up. The man was easy to ID, the woman, not. I was shown photos of vans and that, too, was easy to ID. They were wanted for illegal confinement, robbery, assault, and a host of drug, weapons, promoting prostitution, and endangering the welfare of a minor. This was the good old days when NYC actually punished the bad guys. They were held without bail. Since they both had outstanding warrants, they were sent “up river” in NYC parlance.

Something that happened to me...I was on my way to work early morning on interstate with very few other drivers on the road at the time. A pick up truck passed me in the left lane, then he took his foot off the accelerator until I passed him (no road incident or lane changes for either one of us up to this point). He accelerated again, passing me in the left lane, then pulled into the lane in front of me. He slowed down about 5 MPH in front of me, breaking my cruising speed (we were both in the right lane now). Right after passing the next exit, he came to a fairly gradual stop in front of me. I stopped my car right before the exit. He didn't get out of the truck or make any gestures at all. I didn't want to pass this guy & remain on interstate with him behind or in front of me, so I decided to take the exit to avoid any further interaction. As soon as I did, he started moving forward on the interstate again.
Looking back, it got me thinking more about evasive tactics on the road, but there's not too many choices, really. You either pass, stop, back up, or exit if it's there. If that exit hadn't been there, my best move would have been to back up, I think. We are more vunerable than we think we are.

Many years ago, when I was in my late 20's, I went to Reno with my boyfriend. I took a walk while he gambled. A young man started walking with me and after very few words, asked if I had children. Yes, I replied, I had a young son. He told me that he was just fascinated when he'd meet a pretty lady with a son because his own mother had not been pretty. He wanted me to go "somewhere" with him. I felt something was off. I excited him but I didn't sense that he was sexually attracted to me. I felt that he was hung up on the fact that I was a pretty mother - that I fit his profile and that he would hurt me - maybe kill me. I kept telling him no and he continued to walk with me,, trying to convince me. I felt alarmed. I made a dead stop on the crowded sidewalk with who knows what kind of security in the nearby clubs and shouted at the top of my lungs, "STOP WALKING WITH ME! I'M NOT GOING ANYWHERE WITH YOU!" He backed away. I crossed the street and went back to by boyfriend. I always worried that maybe some other young mothers met harm from him.

Situational awareness helps. People know when and where folks go to pick up their checks. It's no secret. Nearby store parking lots start teaming with "homeless" (most likely mental cases with criminal histories living at board and care places is my impression) and even people who offer lifts. One group said they were trained by a rescue mission to help me because I'm homeless. I'm not homeless. I use what I call the strollerator to get around. You don't see the homeless with those very often. Fortunately I'm a big guy and get even bigger when someone makes the wrong move. Bigger. Not taller. Some guy got on the bus and seemed to offer to buy me a beer. I told him it was fun but it wasn't meant to be at the next stop. If a person is small or an easy target it would help to go with others, mostly.

Something to be very careful about is if you work at night and have to go on any isolated roads wear a baseball cap and put your hair up in the baseball cap so that a man or person out to harm you does not know you are a woman driving alone. I had stopped at a red light and there was a car next to me. There was no traffic around because it was Sunday night midnight, and a four-lane road was going to go into a two-lane road through a very desolate Winding Road for approximately 5 MI. When I approached the 2 lane road this same car sped up to get in front of me. Right away my senses felt something wasn't right, so I backed off from him and stayed back. About 2 mi into the road he turned into a salvage truck area and I immediately sped up to over 80 miles an hour. When I looked into my rear view mirror he was directly behind me. If it was not for the grace of God and prayer I was terrified he was going to bump my car and I was going to lose control and he would harm me. Be aware of who is on the roads with u and trust ur instincts.

This goes on in the trucking industry often at truck stops. They get the driver out to look at a supposed "blown tire" then he gets thumped in the head. Next thing, the load gets looted or the entire truck gets stolen.

      @danielgouge4639 3 месяца назад +8

I'm a trucker and a guy tried to do that one time. Sometimes they are just other truckers letting you know but I'm glad I didn't walk out until later to look at my trailer tires. When I did go outside later on I saw that my tires were just fine so apparently he was up to no good. My intuition told me something was off and that was one reason I didn't pay attention to the guy.

One of the things a fake Good Samaritan creep will commonly do is try to build your trust quickly. You will notice that they are really trying to make you feel comfortable it's part of pulling you in. The giant guy that attacked me years ago acted like a good guy. He even was talking to his wife on the phone real or pretend. Sometimes they will even put the woman on speaker phone. They really create the atmosphere that they are just a normal person. Most people don't just come up to help you. Most people who know boundaries don't give unsolicited help or assistance to someone. If they do ask if you need help and you say no then they usually move on and aren't persistent to help you if they don't know you. Any situation could be pretend. Anyone they are on the phone with etc.

Two perspectives. 1: I'm a single female. About 20 years ago, somebody banged on my patio wall one rainy night after dark. Didn't open the door, just turned on the patio light and pulled back the blinds enough to see this little shrimpy guy standing there at the glass door. He told me he'd run his car off the road and it got stuck in the mud, and wanted me to come help him. Lying, because it hadn't rained enough to cause mud, and the only place he could have run off the road and been unable to get back on the road was into a pond, so he was lying, trying to get me to open the door. No way was I going to do that. But just in case he did have need of help, I offered to call the cops to come help him. He didn't like that. Told him I'd call a friend for him. Didn't like that, either. Then this really big, creepy guy stepped out from behind an evergreen tree where he'd been hiding. I sent Shrimpy on down the street to the Super America and luckily, that was the end of that. 2: Summer of 2021, back when people started acting all crazy and aggressive, I was leaving the grocery store one afternoon. Leaving ahead of me was a tiny little old lady with a walker. She'd push her cart a few inches, then take a step with the walker. I felt bad for her, though she was getting the job done. When we got outside where I could pass her without being rude, I gave her a big smile and asked her if she needed any help getting her cart to her car. She snapped, "No!" and barely looked at me. I felt bad. I guess I scared her. Not a nice world we live in anymore.

A lot of crimes happen at gas stations. You are distracted by pumping gas, your car is often unlocked (with your purse inside if you're female) and it can be kind of deserted. Don't gas up at night. Lock your car and have your keys in your pocket while you pump your gas. Keep your head on a swivel and watch your surroundings. I've had some sketchy encounters at freeway exit gas stations while traveling. Thugs hang out there, just waiting for opportunities to show up. Once they strike, they are on the freeway and gone into the ether.

Someone struggling with items in their cart that they cannot physically handle is a big red flag to me. If they can't get it into their car without help, how did they get it into the cart? And why, when they were in the store, didn't they ask for help then? Most of the stores I frequent, like the hardware store, have people who will help you carry items out like big bags of charcoal or cat litter. I'm often asked by store personnel if I need help carrying things out to my car. My response is, if I can't get it to my car by myself I'm not going to be able to get it into my house by myself either. Sure, if they want to take it out to the car that's fine, but I don't buy things that I know I cannot physically carry and if I do know I am going to buy an item that I can't carry I take a friend with me. And I think most people with disabilities are the same way. If you see someone obviously struggling, they either haven't planned ahead or it is a trap.
I used to live in a not very good neighborhood and there was a young girl who was a single mom living in the apartment next door. Our building was not very secure and everyone on that floor had to share a common restroom down the hall. It probably was an illegal set-up but when you need a place to live and you don't have much money you don't ask these questions. Anyway, she had been SA'd by a man who was still on the loose and who would follow her from time to time. So every now and then she would come to me all hysterical and tell me "He's in the parking lot. Oh, God, he's down in the parking lot. What am I going to do?" I told her several times, "The next time you see him follow you, don't come here, go to the police station and let them deal with him, that's what they're paid to do." Nope. Finally, I said, "Look, I've had enough of this. I've told you over and over, don't bring him here. Now I am going to tell you something. Do you see this lead pipe?" Her eyes got so wide. I said, "I've never seen this dude, but from your description, he sounds like he looks a lot like your boyfriend, whom I haven't seen either. Now you know we all have to share the same bathroom down the hall. Starting today, I want to know when your boyfriend is staying the night. Because if I get up in the night to pee and I see someone in the hallway I do not know and I am not expecting to be there, I am going to hit them with this pipe first and ask questions about it afterwards. And I'd sure hate as hell to hit your boyfriend by mistake, but by God, I am not going to sit back and be a frightened victim just because someone followed you home and you didn't have the wits to lead him elsewhere." Guess what? That put an end to the "Oh my God, he's followed me home again, he's in the parking lot, what do I do nonsense." She knew I meant it and that I would use it. No, she never did let me know when boyfriend was staying over either. The point is there was no more trouble after that. Was there a stalker? I'd say probably not--I think she wanted attention and sympathy and was not expecting the response she got which was that I was prepared to defend myself by any means necessary and I wasn't going to be squeamish or selective about it

I've been in an abusive relationship once in my past, ending up in a shelter because of it.
I had a friend who began dating someone I suspected was abusive from the moment I met him. I warned her of my thoughts about him after their first date. While on her second date with him, she came to my door from her apt, looking frightened & asking me to let her in to "escape" him. I saw no signs he had physically abused her yet, but I DENIED her entrance, & told her to call the police now.
I don't know if she did or not. Our friendship ended there, but I know she continued seeing him thru the grapevine.
Some may judge me as being heartless in the situation, but I think of myself as a lot "smarter" now.

It depends where you live (to a degree). I'm older and disabled. I have to buy things that I shouldn't or can't load or unload myself. I do ask for help, but help is not always available, so I have to get creative to find a way to get it done. Thankfully, I live in a smaller city where people still step up to help others. Even here things have been changing and I imagine at some point we will have to fear everyone as a potential threat, but so far we're able to refuse to live like that. We have each others backs and we still help each other. I have no doubt that if attacked in a local parking lot, others would intervene and almost everyone carries these days just in case. I hope I don't have to live in this world when we can't help others when needed. With that said, I do always have my guard up. When someone offers to help load my car, I back away and stay aware. Even though I may not know them, I usually recognize them if they're local, so that helps. Outsiders don't tend to offer, but if one did I would find that suspect. What I trust is my gut. I worked with criminals, so I'm aware of many of their tactics.

Anyone who is vulnerable should not even talk through the door. It takes the police too long to get there. Just call the police from a safe place in your home. Everyone should have a “safe room.” A room with only one door to get in, no windows, and a deadbolt lock. When someone knocks, retreat and call. Don’t wait. If they hear a “little old lady” voice, they will not be afraid of you whatsoever. They will assume you are the only one home, thinking someone else would have responded if they were there. Call the police. I have my weapon, and have it cable (edit: close 🤣) to me at all times, as does my 80+ mom. Just DONT GO TO THE DOOR. Better for them and you to be smart in this situation.

I managed to get away and cut all contact with him. I did not call the police because it was during the 80's and was too afraid to be even more of a victim based on what I was wearing etc and small town. There was a story not sure if true or not a man and woman driving in a car and saw another man broken down so the husband decided to stop and help out. A body lying on highway shoulder, with feet on traffic lane. I saw it before midnight while driving a truck through Zuni reservation in NM. I was half asleep and I took this side route to California to avoid a truck inspection station. I sobered immediately and had to make quick decision. If I stopped to help and police was involved, I'd be late for LA delivery and I might be fined for commercial driver hours violation. I went on without stop. It's not uncommon in London for adults to send kids into pub's/restaurants ect to snatch phones off tables, bags and the like. The adults disappear if the kid is caught. The locals know this and will warn off the kids in no uncertain terms but tourists or out of town people don't and will get a quick lesson not to leave phones on tables or bags not secured. Burglars use similar tricks, lower a kid in an upstairs window, kid lets adults in or if kid is caught they don't generally get the instant justice an adult may get and the adult is gone. There will be variations on this theme if the grid goes down, send a kid begging to the door ect.

Don't hitch hike either! Same thing applies, it may be the last time anyone sees you either!
Helping people who appear to be injured can get you in trouble in other ways too. They might actually be handicapped and want to do whatever they're doing by themselves. They might be sick of everyone trying to help them. If they don't ask, don't help.
Yes, the "I can't hear you" is very common in the city as well. They want you to be close enough to pickpocket you or grab your purse and run.
Someone tried that with me during the pandemic. I was walking inside a skyway and this individual kept asking what time it was. When I said I didn't know, he changed it to getting directions and asking to use my phone (which I didn't have), after that he wouldn't leave me alone so I led him past a useless security guard. He wouldn't ask the guard what time it was or the directions. He was whispering and unintelligible. I kept on going, hoping he would give up. He still followed me. I led him to the skyway police station and he kept on walking in the direction I was headed. I stopped at the station. He came back to me and dropped his pants offering me money for sex favors. I was disgusted and started pushing the police panic button. He realized where he was, pulled his pants up and walked away right before the police went out on another call. Everything was on camera and I got an escort to my destination.
When I got back, he was waiting outside my apartment building. I snuck in the back way and called the police. He had left but I saw which way he went. They found him 5 minutes later doing the same crap with a lady with a child. He was arrested. I found out later because of a clerical error made by the city attorney's office what his name was and a few other things. I googled his name and found out that he was a repeat felony sex offender in another county, had committed home invasions, armed burglary and sex crimes with minors while breaking in homes. He was out on compassionate release. The court couldn't prosecute him because he was judged "incompetent" to stand trial. I also found out that when he was released, he did exactly the same thing to other people within 24 hours and was arrested again.

This is why the TSA screens EVERYONE at the airport, not just those who fit a certain profile. They don't know, and you don't know. Make a wrong guess, let the wrong person through, and now you've endangered everyone. Is it likely that little old ladies are terrorists? No, but you cannot rule that out. In fact, that harmless little old lady might have an axe to grind, she might be mentally unstable (or both), and because she is a little old lady she might feel she has very little to lose. I was talking to a Vietnam vet the other day and he said that you could not even trust little kids because they could come up to you with a grenade and pull the pin. America has changed and not for the better. In my day it was common courtesy to stop roadside to help a stranger in need, if someone stopped by saying they had an accident, you'd make a call for them. If an elderly or disabled persons looked like they were in over their head, you'd just help. Hitchhikers, that was something you'd judge on a case by case basis. Yes, America has changed, but that isn't a reason to let our humanities go by the wayside. The best thing you said was to trust your instincts, but my takeaway from your video was that there's a threat hidden around every corner, like you'd binge watched all the "wrong turn" movies. Here in rural Minnesota you still do these things because it's the right thing to do. But what really set me off was the comment "somebody other than you". That falls in line with "that's not my job", and that way of thinking has changed America to being a worse place as much as those who victimize the good semaritian. Don't let the evil out there change the heart of America.

    • @SilverSurvival

Actually, I know I’ve mentioned it before, that there’s NOT trouble around every corner. There’s a very low probability of becoming a victim, in most places. Question: Is it legal to hitchhike in Minnesota? Answer: Minnesota State Statute 169.22 states: “No person shall stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride from the driver of any private vehicle.”
If you pick up a hitchhiker you are contributing to the hitchhiker breaking the law. It is the law and that is why help is called for the person at most but you do not put yourself in danger by giving the person a ride. That is for your safety. Even a woman who is hitching a ride could be a psychopath you never know. Be wise be safe and love yourself and loved ones enough not to take a risk like that. One time could be your fate....

I do think it's important to keep the aspect of being a giving person alive so you don't become "jaded". I have found giving anonymously or enlisting someone to deliver an "anonymous gift" to the homeless/helpless keeps you safe. It also causes a recipient to be thankful or think about the spiritual side of things. The giver always receives their reward too.

It's sad that this is where we're at in this country now. Our society has gone to sh!t in so many areas. I was fortunate to live in a small town that was about as safe as it gets. Unfortunately, thanks to our current administration, those days are gone. Obama's policies brought the inner city out to rural towns, some became part of our communities while others went back to where they came from or to prison. We're all for giving second chances and helping immigrants get a fresh start, but those are not the kinds of people being spread throughout small towns and cities across the country under this administration. I have yet to see one woman or child on any of these vans, but I've seen plenty of pushy, rude, obnoxious, young men that think they own whatever place they're in and can do whatever they want. I have realized just how vulnerable an older, single woman is in this wonderful new vision for America. The gang violence in our larger cities keeps increasing with every load they dump on us, but we're still better than a lot of places. At least we still punish criminals except when the feds decide to release them to continue their rampage. So far we're still allowed to defend ourselves here, so that's a blessing. So much for a peaceful retirement. I can't imagine what another 4 years of this would do to us.
