    The keyboardist is Jordan Rudess and he graduated from Juilliard. He's insanely good at piano, and uses the keyboard to its full potential cause he's very passionate about being creative with it and pushing its boundaries.
    What's funny is he's a bit of an elitist, and he says if it weren't for the fact that every single member of the band not only is skilled in their instrument but is also skilled in music theory, he wouldn't even consider playing metal.
    If you like heavy and experimental, I wouldn't recommend Octavarium though I know it's what every fanboy asks for incessantly. It's not for everyone, and a lot of people are turned off by it. The Shattered Fortress might be a better option for you or In the Name of God. 🤘

    Apologies in advance if I'm explaining things you already know. AA chapters are meetings of recovering alcoholics, (always recovering, never cured) where those in attendance can receive support and advice from those who have struggled with the same problems and challenges. They are generally identify themselves by first name only.
    The Glass Prison was the first tract of what eventually became a five track suite chronicling Mike Portnoy's progress through the AA twelve step program. The complete suite consists of:
    1. The Glass Prison - from 2002's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
    2. This Dying Soul - from 2003's Train of Thought
    3. The Root of All Evil - from 2005's Octavarium
    4. Repentance - from 2007's Systematic Chaos
    5. The Shattered Fortress - from 2009's Black Clouds and Silver
    I hope that helps.

    Ooh thanks for doing this song, glad you enjoyed! This one is arguably the heaviest Dream Theater song along with Constant Motion (excluding Train of Thought album). I guessed that yoy were going to choose the epics, A Change of Seasons or Octavarium, so you surprised me :)
    If you ever listen to Octavarium, its shortness will astonish you, although it seems like 24 minutes. It's way less heavier than this, probably better and more quality. I bet it's not like something you have listened to before, but you will hear many other bands in the song as well. It's hard to explain, but beautiful to experience :)

    React to anything off of Images And Words album. That is the first album with James LaBrie on vocals (he joined the band in 1991 after Charlie Dominici was fired, beating out 199 other auditionees). Images And Words was recorded right away and was released in 1992. It’s their breakthrough album that got them international attention. They toured for the album before (as a showcase for LaBrie being introduced as their then new official singer), during and after the album’s release until late ‘93. They then recorded the follow-up album Awake (released in ‘94) which took a darker angle both musically and vocally (another masterpiece). It was the last album James LaBrie recorded before suffering food poisoning when he went on vacation with his wife. He ruptured and bled his vocal chords because of violent vomiting (right before being due to tour for the Awake album). The band (including LaBrie) couldn’t afford to cancel the tour, so, going against doctor’s orders, LaBrie agreed to tour for the album (because you’ve got to make a living), so he took steroids for his vocal chords to maintain throughout the tour. He has said he didn’t feel fully healed until around 2003. He has been with the band since 1991- present, but Images And Words showcases exactly why he was chosen to be their singer. It is my favourite album primarily because of his soaring vocals, and he is the reason I’m a trained singer.

    Nice reaction and nice choice of song! :) The whole 6 degree album is one of, if not the best technical production they made, the sound engineering is amazing! The whole 8 part suite "6 degrees of inner turbulence" is a journey through mental distress. It's not something to react to though, better to enjoy like wine! ;)
    If you like astonishing vocals and musicianship, I'd suggest Pain of Salvation, you should react to "On a Tuesday", "Idioglossia", "Beyond the pale" or the whole BE album... the signer and founder, Daniel Gildenlöw, is truly a gifted genius... You won't regret it!

    Nice detailed reaction! Dream Theater have been my favourite band for almost two decades before I discovered BABYMETAL. Interesting that so many people recommend Glass Prison, to me it's one of their weaker songs. Since you obviously know your stuff, I'm sure you'll find a lot of stuff to like in their catalogue. Jordan is the greatest keyboard magician I have ever heard (I especially love his staccato sounds like those that seemed to throw you off a bit during the second verse), and Petrucci makes the guitar cry like no one else.

    I seriously can't understand why James (DT) vocalist gets so much hate, as if he is the worst vocalist of all time. He's so terrible that he's still touring and making albums (as a huge DT fan the last few were severely lackluster with the absence of Portnoy) but yet he still remains

    • @MetalMann-de3xi
      @MetalMann-de3xi 6 лет назад +1

      Da Propellerguy It's not based upon the albums, he's ok there, it's the live performances that he tends to get lazy. Although it would be hell to go through long tours playing 2-3 hour shows constantly. Instead of perhaps dropping an octave, he tends to do this lifeless screeching that can just take away from the song. I think he's learned to conserve and manipulate his voice better in recent years to make it cleaner, but he's still got work to do.
      Another thing is that some of these songs take him out of his realm of singing, some songs were not made for his voice. His raspy singing just doesn't fit well.
      James LaBrie really shines on "The Astonishing" album. He really shows his range and versatility. The album isn't as well received as the rest of DT's discography. It's the one album that actually puts LaBrie's talent ahead of the band for once.

    • @thapropellerguy8698
      @thapropellerguy8698 6 лет назад

      @@MetalMann-de3xi What do you want the guy to do? No vocalist can always flawlessly sound on point in a live setting. They don't in the studio either and that is to be expected since professionally recorded albums take time versus being on stage, so you have the luxury of "this didn't sound very good, let's do another take." I know it well recording an EP in a pro studio years back.
      There is no way in hell unless you are the most consistent vocal maestro of all time to consistently sound like your studio work, that is gone over and picked clean until you get what you need for the album in question. You want all the parts to synch up for an album, and so what if he/she vocalist can't match verbatim in a live setting the multiple days and cuts to ensure a good performance on a medium that can be enjoyed over and over (CDs, vinyl, etc)
      In my mind people bitching about everything not sounding exactly as recorded are a bunch of fucking morons. Almost as if they think every song on their favorite album the band did it in one take, everyone together at the same time and nailing it. "Well shit I paid money for tickets to see this show and he doesn't sound exactly like what I hear in my headphones" and it would have been better if they played a compilation over the speakers and the band just stands there?
      Anyone who bitches about their favorite vocalist not sounding completely on point and amazing as the CD you bought when you see them in concert are ignorant living in a fantasy world and have never picked up an instrument in their life or went to a studio.

    • @MetalMann-de3xi
      @MetalMann-de3xi 6 лет назад +1

      Da Propellerguy I'm not expecting it to be on point like the album. I respect LaBrie, because like I said in my prior post, they demand a lot from him in concerts. I've also said he's been improving his flaws. He needs to get a vocal coach to help him find ways to produce less strain on his vocal cords to help aide his performance, especially in the very demanding parts. I don't know if you know what I'm talking about. It would be difficult to explain in just text. I'm not slamming the man, I'm just pointing out what he can improve.

    • @thapropellerguy8698
      @thapropellerguy8698 6 лет назад

      @@MetalMann-de3xi Very fair points, but I would like to point out there was a time after Awake was recorded that he had a bad case of food poisoning abroad that took a toll on his overall health but affected his vocal chords a lot as well. Look, I know he doesn't sound great live but no one truly does if it's clean singing. I love Dying Fetus and if there is something wrong and messed up vocally you would never know. Even major pop and country stars can sound awful live, but nobody is calling for their heads. Studio trumps live all day everyday, and just have some empathy that they are doing the best they can with all the spotlights and the pressure. After all is said and done, it always well with the audience loving it.
