A dream Theater mosh pit is a bunch of nerds doing math
BAHAHAHAHA!
hahahahaha
Ooch I can't do math
Spiral Architect & Watchtower/Blotted Science fans:
"Hold our protractor".
"I can't do simple Math but I do love Math Metal" - Me
(note: Been a fan of DT since "WDADU" debuted ;)
Even just head banging to Dream Theater requires math
"He's got a bit of a sense of humour about him, doesn't he?"
Oh yes, he does. I remember seeing them when Derek Sherinian was their keyboarder, and him and Portnoy kept fucking around, like pulling faces, throwing stuff and spitting at each other - in the middle of songs, no less.
he did way more than that, in livesong change lirics to ass and balls > always gooffing around on tapes :D
You should check out "Hear me" by Devin Townsend with Samus Paulicelli on drums. Portnoy said it was the drum performance of the year. Make sure to watch the drum cam version though.
Sounds great Logan!
They played this live in Manila, 2017. Played a bit of enter sand man before the end of the song.
Good song. Dream theater is awesome because they have had some really long songs. So you just press play then before you know it, several hours have passed.
Mike Portnoy is a GOD!! He is so versatile and energetic, one of the GOAT. Did you get my patreon message to react to one Mike Portnoys other songs? You need to it'll blow your mind more! 🤙
I'll def do it Nathan!!!
Jason Rullo >>>>>>>>>>>>> Portnoy
This is from one of his Drum cam dvds called Drums of Thought. It's for the album Train of Thought.
The whole thing is on youtube plus a Drums Only version so you can focus just on that.
Awesome stuff!
NICE! Thank you
Have you checked out mario duplantier? Gojira. Pretty much any song. The guy is amazing.
Yes! Done a few on him. He's great
Don't know if you have checked out Sebastian lancer's epilogue to infinity but you should without vocals because i think it would be more up your alley.
I know this is a longshot but please react to audio only babymetal - tales of the destinies. Mike portnoy himself said it rivals dream theater songs. Dont be misled by the name. Thank you!
One of Dream Theatre's more straight forward songs, both in structure and technicality.
Sounds fantastic Josh
Jason Rullo >>>>≥>>>>>>>> Portnoy
Honor thy father drum cam is unbelievable
Much better option actually.
This guy knows it.
That one is sick!
Thank you! I often see "as i am" reactions, but rarely "honor thy father" which IMO is as good (nor better!). But tastes depend of people :)
reaction video for just the drum intro of that song will take 10 mins
Not sure if you've heard it, but 'Dance of Eternity' is a technical monstrosity. Worth watching him play it just for the meter and tempo changes. Cheers Andrew!
On the way!
100 %. One of the best, 108 time signature changes! It's a roller coaster.
Dance of Eternity is my favourite DT song. It's a technical masterclass.
It's almost rude to mention, but Marco Minnemann has a video up where he plays this song too and it's also worth the watch.
It is a monster. However I prefer the "Instrumedley live at Budokan"
He actually flips the sticks to hit the ride with the tip, and then flips it back to hit the snare with bottom end, as usual
Well spotted Felipe!
Sometimes he doesn’t flip it back at all. He has two drumstick bags. One on is left, the other on his right. The bag on his left, he always has the sticks pointing face down for, like you said, power. And the other bag are always facing up.
And his sticks always have, clear tips. For that clear crisp sound on the rides and Max Stacks ( 3 different size splashes stacked on top of each other)
He does it live too
Neil Peart of Rush played with the butt end of the stick throughout his career. This is probably the reason Mike does it, because he's a super fan of Neil... And I'm a fan of both of them!!😎
Nice! It's fatter!
And the only way to play cross sticks!
Mike Portnoy is a next level drummer.. Neil is no near him, same goes for Magini, Donati, Minneman or the greatest technical drummer Thomas Lung
Fans have been rejoicing at the recent reunion of Portnoy and John Petrucci. After many years apart, Portnoy has recorded drums for Petrucci's latest solo album. There is something reassuring and comfortable in hearing those two together for people who grew up with them in Dream Theater. Great pocket player in the context of prog metal.
Pocket is right Julien!
WHAT?! Must listen NOW.
@@a.hoe.line69 Happy listening!
didn't know that. thanks for the info!
And now liquid tension 3 8D
You MUST check out more of dream theater. I only started listening to them last year and I’m pissed I went this long without their music.
Definitely one of my favourite bands of all time
More on the way Shawn!
Im so excited for you! Im 30 and images and words was my first album. Shit ive had some fun with DT
@@GeorgeeeW Damn, you had fine taste from the very first album haha
As it stands, Train Of Thought is my favourite album by them. One of the last I listened to as well 😂
Apparently, that album only took them a couple weeks to make or some madness like that.
Welcome Shawn to DTs world....
I’m so envious when people discover DT for the first time. It’s a great journey. Enjoy
This is the DT album most people need to start with to be able to absorb their sound.
Yup I dug it!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums If you choose to listen to Train of Thought (the album this comes from). If I may suggest, Images and Words would be a good logical next step. Both albums have solid, approachable songs. With virtuosity weaved in. Then the albums that are more dense, should appeal to you more afterwards. Glad you liked it!
Images and Words.
You should react to Portnoy's "Dance of Eternity". And from this album, "This dying soul" or "Honor thy father" This song is pretty simple compare to the others! Go for it, please
On the way brother!
i second honor thy father
I'd like to add The Glass Prison to this list.
Yes to all of the above!
Honor Thy Father especially
Jason Rullo >>>>>>>>>>>> Portnoy
I got distracted watching John Myung fade in and out of reality in the background.
HAHA!!!
yea he does that
32 year old here, Portnoy is absolutely a "super drummer" to me! One of my biggest influences growing up for sure
Agreed. When I think "supper drummers" Portnoy is in that list.
32 now and Portnoy was and still is my drum hero. Along with Carter Beauford and Stewart Copeland
The video of him playing "The Great Debate" is so much more reaction-worthy. A truly great display of his dynamics, arrangement, and sense of melody behind the kit. Not to say this is a bad song or performance... Mike is dope and a super nice guy!
Now , if you like Dream Theater , you should check out Liquid tension Experiment .
LTE 3 is coming out soon
@Johnny Dong I Iove DT but they're all like 80 now
Regarding the Metallica references, this entire album (train of thought) is quite metallica-esk and is a bit of a outlier among the rest of Dream Theaters albums. They loved the reactions they got from the crowd during the heavier sections of their songs so they decided to write a full album like that.
You gotta do 'the Dance of Eternity.'!
Dance Of Eternity on the way John!!!
"This sounds very much like Metallica", correction, it sounds like Metallica with a good drummer.
Lars couldn't carry this guys' stick bag...lol
Lars is a perfect fit.
And audible bass
What makes portnoy so incredible is his ability to play technically, but still pocket super hard. A lot of technical drummers are super dead on grid.. but he keeps it just loose enough to pocket
Jason Rullo >>>>>>>>>>>> Portnoy
The reason he flips the stick around at 9:20 is so that when he's riding the ride cymbal, the hits are more evenly toned. From documentaries that I've seen, Mike plays most of the time with his left stick inverted because he likes the sound he gets from the snare with it that way... but if he was riding that ride with one stick inverted, the left stick would sound a bit louder than the right stick.
Hey if you like this song you should listen to dream theater's album systematic chaos you won't regret it
You should watch Larnell Lewis' Zildjian Live performance, it's breathtaking
YES!!!
this. do this.
"You´re breathtakin´!"
Do Mike Portnoy “The Great Debate”
June of 2017.
You will not be disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!
Mike HAS to be on anybody’s list of “top 5 drummers”…
He's most definitely on mine.
Jason Rullo >>>>>>>>>>>> Portnoy
As I Am remains to be one of my favourite DT songs, it just hits SOO hard!
Great reaction to an absolute legend
SO many other better drum songs from this album ffs. This Dying Soul for example.
Under a Glass Moon, that hooked me back in the day.
I'll check it out!
That’s my favorite DT song, and I hardly know any of the lyrics. I focus on MP’s drum work too much to bother with words.
Never heard Dream Theater, Rush, Iron Maiden (much) etc. I think we found the downside of living in New Zealand 🤣
Its actually two drumsets put together with 3 bassdrums.... So the middle One is the left kick of the right set... And the right kick of the left set....
The left Side is for technical songs and the right is for the heavy songs. ...
"I've been trying to justify you. In the end, I will just defy you."
The vocals have always been my least fave component of DT, but that's a bar right there. Very clever.
Nice Dave!
there are a few guitarists that ive heard that truly make the guitar “sing”, and i can confidently say that mike is making those drums sing!
YES
Coincidentally speaking-- Petrucci is indeed one of those guitar players who DOES make his guitar sing....
@@travo2112 i couldnt agree more man its like im watching a movie in my head when i listen to jp
@@420catson Its nice talking to a man who knows what he's saying...
I'm sure he flipped the stick because he has nylon tips on his sticks, so the part on the ride cymbal which followed 3 seconds later sounds more crisp :)
Haha! You should check out Mike Portnoy playing the Hello Kitty drumsets! It's hilarious!
Check out their album Images and Words. I've never paid any particular attention to the drumming, but the overall musical composition through the whole album is gorgeous.
He does play with the left stick reversed. I have one of them I caught at a Winery Dogs show. The perks of being 6'4 in a crowd of people. The grip tape is on the tip side. One of my favorite drummers ever!
Awesome info Sean!
You just had to flex your height on us, 6'0 mortals...
Bobby Jarzombek!
You should also check out lamb of god Chris adler he's pretty similar but a bit faster you may have heard of him a few years back he was in every drum magazine all the time
11:00-11:25 LOVE THE REACTION! It’s so good, you gotta go back for seconds!
a drummer who doesnt "know" Mike P. and dream theater, is no drummer lol
9:30 If you listen, you can hear how much the snare sound changes when he flips the stick front to back. It’s such a massive change in the sound, and him playing with the stick back to front is a major reason why his snare sound has always been INSANELY good.
Mike Portnoy is not considered a super drummer?! Lol
This is probably the second most comercial song by them and doesn't say too much about his skills.
WOW!
yep, this is very tame compared to a lot of his deep cuts. Theres songs to this day where im like "how the fuck does he do that"
I like the almost freeform stuff for showing off Portnoy. Something like Dance of Eternity.
How ironic when the song is all about how their last record company tried to make their music more comercial
super drummer without Neil Peart you sould be a shame man
Dream Theater is defined as Yes meets Metallica, whereas Rush was defined as Yes meets Led Zeppelin. Neil Peart of Rush is Mike Portnoy's favorite drummer and biggest influence
Nice Jason!
0:44 Thanks for using a brazilian meme aka Nazaré 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷 🇧🇷
0:44 fude, you used a Brazilian meme. Hahaha
You should check out his son, Max. Plays in bands called Tallah and Code Orange. He's something else
Nice!!
lmao super drummers and he's reacting to MIKE PORTNOY... = SUPER DRUMMER
Yes he is!
I use to play this record when I’m cycling to work. Great energy!
That's awesome!
Blake Richardson - Voice of Trespass, live drum playthrough.
didnt know this song either and ever since i heard him playing it on drumeo its on my playlist.....what a beast of a song
So good 💪
11:00-11:35 is how we as mega fans of DT react still after years of listening to their tunes endlessly. They're a musical Freakshow. I love watching people's reactions to DT haha.
Jason Rullo >>>>>>>>>>>> Portnoy
The whole album "Train of Thought" is a masterpiece in my opinion.
I get the same feeling of "story telling" as with Floyd's The Wall, but done in a metal fashion. The way, As I Am kicks it off like a face slap, just going harder and harder where you almost get thrown into a dramatic story with This Dying Soul and Endless Sacrifice. Into a "climatic mid outro" with Honor Thy Father, which gives you some breathing time with Vacant, that beautifully transcends into one of (if not) the best instrumental metal songs ever created, Stream of Consciousness. Ending the album almost as wrapping up the whole story on one's dying knees in cry for a new beginning with In the Name of God.
Which it does, because I could just do one thing after hearing the first time, listen to the album again.
Great stuff!
Probably an unpopular opinion, but I feel Train of Thought was DT’s last thoroughly enjoyable album start to finish. For me the rest of the catalog afterwards just had a few enjoyable songs here and there
Sabian: Hey Mike, we’re gonna send some cymbals your way. Which do you want?
Mike: yes.
HAHA Sia!
I hadn't heard this track or ever focused on Dream Theatre drums before this video. That fill after the solo was so filthy
You should check out Haken's "nil by mouth" or "puzzle box"
Thanks Kirk!
“You don’t just do that!”
That’s the exact moment I became a huge fan. My friend said I should check out dream theater because I was into complicated bass arrangements. I went to a and b sound and bought train of thought on a whim and as I am is the first track. The solo followed by that drum fill section out of it.... I didn’t even realize music could be like that until then.
Check Thell barrio, the song is "a toda madre" the drums sound Nice.
Gracias Gonzalo!
Hands down, one of my favorite DT tracks.
Mikey was Dream Theater’s soul. Here’s why he fits so well in the track, doing a lot, but never too much. You should listen to John Petrucci’s last solo album, they’re a perfect duo.
It’s a shame that they split, because the entire vision DT had was Mike’s brainchild. Think about the “Twelve Step Suite”. Five songs, five albums, one concept. And the five songs stuck perfectly in every album concept. That’s crazy.
Sir please if you love me ,react to Jason Rullo from Symphony X 🙏🏻
I'll do my best!
Honor thy Father DT ( Portnoy)
Hei Andrew the Drummer from Marduk is a Beast. Black Metal
Thanks Marco! 🖤✔️
Good album. Live at budokan great showcase dvd.
Thanks Curtis!
I saw a brazilian meme..lol
If you think that video is good you should check out his hello kitty drum kit !
I will!
This song is played with 0,01% of his actual skill.
(Brazilian Portuguese comment)
0:44 Meme da Nazaré ganhando o mundo! 😄
She is a Brazilian actress.
🇧🇷
make a recommended video or showing your favorite drummers
I hope to do that!
My picks will be sooooo different to any of these LOL
Portnoy the best, easy
would love to see a you react to JEFF LOOMIS tracks Miles of machines, Devil theory or The Ultimatum.... PLEASE EH IM FROM CANADA EH... ITS COLD EH
Finally this song getting the recognition it deserves 👌👌😂
This is the jam Luke!
Mike is a ****ing GOD !!!! End of, that is all, drop the mic, move on!!!! 😍🤟😝🤩👌
HAHA! Yup!!!!
One of my fav songs from my 2nd fav DT album. Love it....definitely more "straight up" rock album, but totally underrated!
I reeeally enjoyed this!
The *VAST MAJORITY* of DT songs are technical monsters….most, without becoming uninteresting as many other prog-rock bands tend to become with OVERLY complex odd-time signatures and changes. Since you found yourself enjoying this as much as you obviously did, you have a wonderful journey of discovery awaiting as you go back thought their discography. Enjoy!! 👍🤟
Jason Rullo' >>>>>>>>>>>>> Portnoy
Need to check-out Mike Heller from fear factory
Great call!
The GOAT in Progressive Metal!!!!
John pertrucci used to refer to portnoy as "the camel" because he had a habit of spitting across the stage. So bad in fact, that john had to have a perspex cover over his amps. 😂
WHAT!?
It was on a documentary section of a live show dvd my father owns. Wish i could remember which one.
How can something be soooo nasty, yet sooo clean???
That's the grease!
Think he wanted to play with tip on the ride (9:50), otherwise he plays with flipped stick all the time :) enjoying your videos NZ guy! ;)

Sorry to be so obnoxious. Very tight. Must see. The guitar playthrough is amazing as well. Thanks!!!

I’m not a big fan of LTE. It pales in comparison to Dream Theater.
Train of Thought (2003), great album. And you should also make a reaction video on, A Change Of Seasons song. You can find it on RUclips. From Metropolis 2000: Scenes from New York live DVD. Awesome live show. Check it out if you haven't watched it yet.
Ok then next Mike Mangini! 😂
8:00 to 8:05 personal highlight
HAHA
Weckl, Vinnie C, Gadd, Bozzio, Carey, Jarzombek, Minneman, Lang, DiCenso, Zelaney...and a guy named Rich BUDDY!
Super drummers, eh? Check out Lord Marco Pitruzzella playing BLEAK FLESH track drum playthrough
ruclips.net/video/h5SVnPl7hjw/видео.html
He flipped the drumsticks when he was riding off the symbol and the hi-hat and then when he was going back to the snare he flipped it back.
fyi...he flipped his left stick because the next section required him to play on the bow of a cymbal, then he flips back
Watch him with Winery Dogs doing Oblivian... Suggestion.. Glen Sobel drum solo live on Alice Coopers Halo of Flies....
Oh man, Portnoy has so much good shit. Theres a Trial of Tears video of him drumming it, and its unreal to see.
He's out of control good David!
I love it when people say that you're hitting something wrong... Drumming is the caveman's music, the more brutal the better.
YES!
I didn't say he was hitting wrong did I!?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums haha no of course not, but I was watching your videos in a sort of marathon, and you mentioned in this video that some drummers tend to hit their kits hard and it got me thinking “isn’t that, like, a good thing?”
Brent Smedley should be recognized as a 'super drummer'
Iced Earth
I see you have Richard Christy (he played with IE some)
Smedley is on the "Alive in Athens" live album as well as a few others, check out
Crucible of Man album with:
Come What May
maybe maybe not, but, he's great, the stuff he does is unmatched as far as I see
my 2nd favorite drummer after Portnoy
YUP, you're starting to get the Portnoy bug, which is a slight man crush between drummers. PERFECTLY NORMAL!!!👍🏻🤣❤️❤️❤️
There is a young drummer named Wanja Groger and the stuff he plays is incredible... He made extreme metal covers of 2 System of a Down songs, a Dethklok song, and a Miley Cyrus song... I was amazed how he was able to add so much musicly but not over drum and kill the dynamics of the song... Please give them a reaction and I'd love to hear what feedback you may have on them...
I HATE HIM FOR MAKING ME LIKE A MILEY CYRUS SONG!!! 🤯🤯🤯
