Very honest and transparent video Derek. I love it. I also like Ramit Sethi's concept of "Just Do One" e.g. when you have a committment that you don't want to follow through on, decide to just do the first thing. Just get the camera rolling Just put your gym clothes on Just write the first word Just do one. Keep cranking this out
Thanks for setting the example and following through. My issues that get in the way usually have to do with money. An expense comes up I wasn’t expecting (or several). When I get something like the surprise bill sitting in front of me as I listen to my window leaking from the rain, it can take me down a negative road of “what the heck am I doing” etc. I have to manually guide my thinking through it.
Thanks Derek for keeping it real. This is an important video for me. I expect I'll be watching this one over and over. Anyone who has ever mastered a musical instrument knows this is how you get there.
Yes. Obstacles appear. And I have to be honest. There are times where I fail to carry through. That's why my rule for working out is "never miss two workouts in a row". This way, in the rare instance that I miss a workout, I enter a mindset where I guarantee I make the next one. Hasn't failed me.
Some times life happens... and if you do happen to "miss" once in a while - no biggie, live, learn and move on. Just don't let the misses get the better of you...
Hey Derek. "Who can you trust?" A question that was working it's way around a photography group I'm part of yesterday came up. In the photography world, there are a lot of people who claim to be "gurus" but churn out bad or even dangerous business advice. Almost all from people who failed as photographers or had maybe a couple of good years of business, AT BEST. The question of "Who can you really trust?" when it comes to "teachers" and independent learning is an important one. What is your take?
Yes and it is one I created. My wife was also my business partner. Overtime she stopped being my wife and became that person. Now she is no longer my business partner. Now she is back as my life partner. No commas and short sentences CHECK.
I like your video and it was totaly appropriate for my experience from today. Today I've almost missed my train to very important business meeting in another city. When I heard my connection train will have delay I thougt Oh my god, I ca'nt make it! But than I set up a plan, how I could it make it if all the elements will be working with my plan. And I did it:-) It was almost impossible but I kept pushing my plan forward, ran almost like for gold medal in Olympics, and did make it to catch my train:-) So everything you have just said is really true:-) And keep making these videos;-)
Everyday, I do one thing to keep the dissertation moving forward. Find an article, read an article, take notes on an article, write a paragraph, or 2 or 3, in a chapter, or schedule a conversation. I still want to meet your videographer. What's it like to deal with Derek on a daily basis?
a wise man said some times ago ... do not be like an animal who does things when they come on the way but plan your time (have schedule) and no mater what stick on it... a person using this method could write 900 books and booklets and serious works, deep and wise, and he died about 50 or 55 years old *about . this is advice for myself, and i home some1 may benefit from this.
I agree, it doesn't matter what reason you give for not doing it. The only thing that matters is that you did it. Also there are no shortcuts. If it takes four hours then you need to do the four hours... Otherwise you didn't make it.
that's relevant man. super true.

Hang in there! I’ve been loving it and learning and it’s a great reminder to commit for real when I commit.
Nice work on making it happen! BAM!

THIS is a daily struggle but I am happy to say I am getting much better at sticking to my commitment to show up every day and talk it out.

You should do a video of your daily schedule
I love you
See you tomorrow
