Meet 98 year old Marietta, who makes pasta with meatballs! | Pasta Grannies

- Marietta's secret to a long life is to chop wood (she still does), never sit down for long, and 'don't eat like rich people do'. Her recipe for pasta and meatballs is something her family would eat once or twice a year. Plus living somewhere like Serrestretta in Calabria probably helps! Here is her recipe:
For the pasta, use 400g semolina flour, 1 egg and around 150ml of water.
For the meatballs, use 500g finely minced pork steak with some fat in it. 100g pecorino cheese, grated, 1 tablespoon minced parsley, 2 slices bread soaked in water and squeezed dry, oil for frying
For the sauce, onion, minced, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 meaty sausage, preferably flavoured with paprika, but add a teaspoon if your sausage is plain, 750ml tomato passata, a handful of basil leaves, chopped, salt to taste. Кино
You mean 98 years young ! I'm 25 and I don't have the energy nor the sassiness of this woman. A true pleasure to watch. God bless her ✨✨
Yes! Im 26 and just came home from work exhausted!!
You could add a nice two hour walk to work and a day weeding the potato fields. That would transform anyone’s stamina and physique. When I started walking it was really uncomfortable but I learned that was partly due to my shoes being the wrong size and worn out socks. Getting out for a walk or bike ride actually energizes you I’ve found. For longer distances I’ve been told people use lubricants like Vaseline or various oils to prevent chafing and blisters. Historically, people would just grab a few necessities and walk for days. I think we’ve lost perspective of what’s possible.
@@sittingstill3578 cant walk to work. I have to take a first aid kid and ice packs.
@@footyfan101ful That’s what I felt like after my first long walk too. I was sore for a week but it was a turning point for me.
@@sittingstill3578 i need these items for work. I work at the footy as a sports trainer.
Meat on special occasions, not every Sunday. The life of hard work shows in the arms and hands of these Grannies. I have such respect for their strength.
My great-grandma Leonilde died at the age of 107 in 2013. She was from Istrana, near Venice. Until her 101 years she was still cooking for herself ❤️ what memories these videos bring back to my mind!
Wow! Super blessed!!!👍
Sorry for your loss she in the glory with god 🌹🥰🙏😘
I was born in Vedelago, just a hop and a skip from Istrana. (Both my parents: Trevisani.)
Mamma is now 88. Longevity runs in her family. She's spry, healthy and cooks every day.
Doesn't cook much pasta though, and no red meat.
She's very slim, and extremely health conscious these days.
She has slowly, but surely, modified the World War 2 "old country" northern Italian diet I was raised on. (Think: pasta, polenta, carne e toccio, panne...)
She also exercises daily.
My father died in his fifties, of a heart attack.
Mamma, on the other hand, plans to outlive us all!
Anyway: Ciao from someone in Canada whose surname also ends in "n". (Typically "Trevisan"!)
@@Seriously_Eh my other great grandma was from Vedelago 😊 they moved then to Fanzolo after the war and then my grandpa from there to Montebelluna, where my parents still live. Love to know there is someone from my area on this channel!
@@lorenzocadorin1927 That's wild!
She says she never stayed sitting in a chair. That stings. I only get up to get more pasta.
That's why our generation will have less and less over 100
I also never sit down. I don't even have a chair or sofa... and I'm 32! 😉
Love your avitar! I miss Abe Vigoda.
@@bbmcgee33 me too, I lay down on my bed instead, lol...
Protect the Pasta Grannies at all cost. They are treasures.
"These days it's like a joke." What a great personality this nonna has.
I think this might be the most delicious looking pasta dish of the series. I love how Marietta lightly scoffs at the idea of eating meat every week. She’s wonderful!
Alians
The realest real: blow your nose in a hanky, wipe your eyes with it, put it in your pocket, and straight back to cooking 😅 love it
Me too! Just loved that bit…..authentic. 😘
When Mamma Italia shows off her jewels, does she bring out Venice, Florence or Rome? The marvels of Pompeii? The treasures of the Vatican? Dante's Commedia or the operas of Verdi? The mighty Alps? The shining Mediterranean? The awesome majesty of Vesuvius? No - her greatest treasure is the Nonnas. They need UNESCO World Heritage status. Thank you for recording them for posterity.
No joke! I wish my Grandmothers & Mother would have shared their recipes with me. Unfortunately, they took all of them to their graves. They shared wonderful stories, about their lives, but none of their phenomenal recipes. My Dad's Mom & her Sisters used to make food for their family's boarding house guests. She was the best cook, EVER, & I will never taste food that good again.
Well said!
This was beautiful ❤️
You are so right. UNESCO World Heritage status is exactly what UNESCO should be celebrating - living heritage.
well said! best wishes, Vicky
I have fallen in LOVE with Marietta!
All of these naturally light, sunlight soaked Italian kitchens seem like absolute bliss to work in.
I was just thinking the same thing 😊
Even more so with such a nice granny!
Bless this lovely Nona' s hard working hands which has turned out many a savoury dish and chopped wood with ease.
As she rightly said , those times when once men and women really laboured hard, those times should have been filmed to show the slothful , easy going generation of today, what real hard work means, what frugality means. Love this Nona with all my heart.
@@BurkenProductions what a sweetheart, eh?
These nonna's bring tears to my eyes. Such kindness such love and a genuine nature. It's been lost. We have lost our ways. I am not taking about religion. I am taking about humanity.
Amen
Absolutely agree! But channels like this one can reconcile us with ageing, with food, with life itself. As a woman, I also feel very empowered by the fact that these wonderful old ladies are valued, loved and reveared for the founts of knowledge & wisdom that they are. It's beautiful.
@@aurevoiralex Women are AMAZING. These women are amazing. Yes yes yes .
we were meant to live simple lives... we've ruined it all somehow... but maybe we can find a new way to reconcile it all, maybe..
@@AP-jg1sb I try and live simply. Growing food and flowers. Making all my food from scratch. Buying less and choosing well. Yes I like little luxuries. But don't we all?
She is awesome ! Still chopping wood at 98? I felt a little tinge of shame 😱knowing that she would run circles around me and I’m in my early 40’s 🥺 she nailed it when she said she didn’t do a lot of sitting, it’s a proven fact that sedentary life isn’t indicative of a long life. Her family is so lucky to still have her. I like her saucy responses . I hope she has many happy years ahead. 🥰
No issues kneading the dough because she was CHOPPING WOOD YESTERDAY?!!!
What an absolute gem. Certainly aren't built like this anymore.
What a delight to watch this Nonna is 🥰.. full of wisdom and happy cheer. Secret to her fitness in a nutshell in her own words - worked hard everyday (physical labour), ATE SPARINGLY, walked a few miles a day and din't waste time simply sitting (lazing) on a chair. These four lines are a master class in itself for our current generation. Thank you beautiful Nonna! 💝💝
I'm Italian but i come from the North, i don't understand the Calabrian dialect so i need to read the english subtitles to understand what she saying 🤣 it's incredible! Italy is beautiful 🇮🇹
This lady is a real spitfire! An inspiration. Many more years dear lady!
What a charming old world woman. She stays so vital at 98 because she works her ass off. Staying active. Chopping wood. Having a purpose. Good for her!!
Grazie nonna Marietta.
this woman is healthier and happier than most people with multi-million fancy apartments, cars, clothes and 'important' jobs in offices etc... I mean, I don't know whether to laugh or cry with this video...
That face. That beautiful, delightful face!
These NONNAS are the treasure of Italy, almost all gone unfortunately, the authentic cooking, celebration of life even when they had nothing to eat, only hard labour, the riches are found in these humble souls. God bless them and thank-you for bringing to us these wonderful ladies of past generations that's makes us regret the treasures we lost.
I know this is about her cooking but how can we not admire her beautiful skin and green/hazel eyes that are so bright? My word her skin is so youthful looking! I’m 50 and don’t have skin that youthful! Her food and strength is equally as impressive!
She's really looks so good considering her age.
She’s 98 😍
Marriet’s wealth of stories about her life was so absorbing to me, that I almost forgot she was cooking….this was a life lived with hardship, but I love how she’s remained a powerful force, full of sass and energy. Her pasta looked great, but her words will stay with me a long time.
Nice one , actually I’m really depressed right now, lost a coworker. very devastating , Needed someone to talk to.
At the age of 98 she is making pasta with love & dedication... It's great.. Here at the age of 31 I don't want to go even from bedroom to bathroom.. 🤦♀️
98 oh my goodness... what a blessing 🙌
They just don't don't such wonderful people like Marietta anymore.

we call ladies and men of this sort old stager or old folk, with thriving modernity and comfort it brings, we no longer she such sturdy and joyful ladies and men.. these days all of us lazy, couch potatos from teenage years, and nothing motivates us while living in plenty and luxury :((((
What a great lady!!! 😍❤️🇮🇹
I can't describe the joy watching Marieta. I could spend hours and hours in her company, learning and learning. What a gem! ♥️
Crips! She is gangster. Just playing. She is really cool and deserves an award for her pasta. I'm from Los Angeles where set banging and tag banging come from.
Nonna Marietta is definitely an OG!
A lot of people don't know that Crips rep for the pasta.
What beautiful stove, I would give almost anything for that, the beautiful lady cooking is amazing What beautiful strong hands she has,god bless you lucky lady
super cute granny, Thanks for sharing Marietta
My 97 year old Nonna passed away at Christmas 2019 and I miss her so much! Watching these videos brings back memories and gives me so much comfort. I feel so fortunate to have had her in my life for so long. Thank you for these amazing videos❤️
I'm glad the videos help you with your grief 🌺🌺 best wishes, Vicky
Maria lovely, lovely nonna. You moved my heart. Those beautiful clear eyes have seen so much. As i said before these ladies should be given an Oscar just for being grannies. God bless them all...and that pasta too!!!!🤗🤗🤗🤗
Anyone else craving this food??? I want to experience this.. so grateful for those who can get food like this made with love.
Wouldn't you just love to visit Nonna Marietta? I would bring grocery bags filled with foods, she normally wouldn't buy, & then watch, in awe, as she made them into phenomenal dishes. And then, to cap it off, hang on to every word as she told the story of her life. What an amazing Woman.
She's my role model for living well. Bravo Marietta you are so inspiring and beautiful.
My great-grandmother was born in Alto Adige; the province is the northernmost of Italy. She wasn't good at pasta but a great baker and cook of all variants of 'cucina povera' like canederli which needs some 'forgotten' bread. She always had funny shaped Pane di Pasqua for the kids on Good Friday. She was a frugal lady and died peacefully at 106.
Rimarrà nei nostri cuori con tutte le nonne italiane (o altoatesine)
hi Michel, thank you for sharing your great grandmother's story; 106 is an excellent age to reach. 😊🌺 best wishes, Vicky
I love Marietta. The best part of this video is how totally oblivious the "Pasta Grannies" crew is to Marietta's complete contempt for them. I so love these videos!
My gramma, Cosma, is 90 now, she's from Ceará, northeastern Brazil. Her oldest memory is to work on the corn fields, on 1935, helping her father to get something to eat during one of the recurrent droughts that always castigated Brazil's semi-arid lands. Until last year she was in great shape, but age is starting to show its weight, sadly. But two things are certain: in the past 100 years or so we improved our way of living like never before (though not for everyone) and to exercise is the greatest thing for health.
Thanks for these amazing videos, Vicky, they truly make my Fridays much better.
Has your gramma shared any of cooking with you? It is such a treasured thing to pass down in families! 💜
@@NikkiNyxx86 my gramma isn't very known for her cooking skills xD
But there is some dishes that in my mom's and sister's hands became very good.
One that I particularly love is mungunzá, it's like a feijoada (if know what I'm saying) but instead of black beans, you put corn on the pork and it is delicious
how interesting, even if Cosma was not the greatest of cooks, I hope you are recording all her stories. And you're right, we should not romanticise poverty, but when it wasn't too harsh, it did inadvertently result in a healthy lifestyle. And yes, daily, almost constant moving around and exercise (not the twice a week gym kind) is the most important thing for health. Best wishes to you and Cosma, Vicky
@@pastagrannies some years ago I made several recording of her, from how she got married to how she learnt unexpectedly the ways of being a midwife. But I lost all the recordings due to a problem in a online storage site :(
But the memory lives on anyway.
Tks Vicky! You're amazing!
Not even half her age but not this enthusiastic anymore to cook. All grannies are so inspiring.
I LOVE THIS COOKING CHANNEL.
This one was a little more personal listening to her speak about things like the past and life. A little more then about pasta 🍝 . You could feel her emotion.
Marietta, this pasta dish from scratch looks so appetizing. Marietta, your physical and mental health at your glorious, golden age is remarkable. I hope I'm as beautiful as you when I'm your age. Whatever you're doing to stay so healthy and happy, just keep on doing it. May Father God shine his glorious light on your beautiful face, every day, for the rest of your life. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us, dear lady. 💐💐💐💐
Thank you all of these most amazing women and still cooking at their age and still getting around probably better than a lot of us this is the best way to learn how to cook I thank you please please more videos,,, God bless her and all the women my love and many thanks to all them
What a great character Marietta is - and sticks to the old frugal ways of making ragu, with small amount of meat. My wife's mother, Nonna Teresa, always used to cringe at the huge amounts of meat that TV chefs put into ragu - hers tasted fantastic - and we still make it to her recipe.
hi Tony, yes you're right - home cooking starts and ends in a very different place to cheffing. 😊🌺 best wishes, Vicky
Nice one , actually I’m really depressed right now, lost a coworker. very devastating , Needed someone to talk to.
She is precious! God continue to bless her with strength and health all of her days.

Marietta. I have watched all the episodes and this is by far my favorite. You are amazing and your food looks and (I'm sure) tastes phenomenal. I wish I could be so lucky as to taste it! Thank you all for this wonderful episode.
Jim, I'm hoping to film her again 😊 best wishes, Vicky

Delicious pasta cooked with love and happiness. Love to see her strengh and enthusiasm. God bless her each day. Love from the Philippines

Brava Nonna Maria!! Mi fa tanto piacere vedere come cucini pasta di casa. Buonissimo!
I can not get enough of Pasta Grannies. This is a brilliant channel. I would love to learn more about each of the grannies and a few grampies. Thank you for enticing our lives with these beautiful stories.
Magical. She is glorious. Her meal looks wonderful.

La amo fuerte señora ❤️ me hizo acordar muchísimo a mi abuela Juana que ya no está físicamente pero siempre en mi corazon
Marietta is a master at her cooking and "wood chopping" 😘 ! God Bless her. Quella pasta sembra così buona.
"With the big axe, not just the small one." Quote of the day!
My mother told us kids as teens/adults that would say, "If you want something to cry about... I'll give you something to cry about!" Marietta and my mother would have been friends!
Thank you Vicky and the entire production team for another cherished moment (and a wonderul little pork-ball recipe).
hi Greg, we are hoping to film Marietta again - and it would be great if she could give us a wood chopping demo 😊🌺 best wishes, Vicky
Hi I just joined this channel and I also enjoy cooking, you look great and do you often watch this channel?
"Why do you add the sausage Maria?"
"To give it some more flavor. Hehehe!"
God I love this show.
She looks like my adorable grandma, that passed away of the age of 90, in 1996. She was born in Brazil but had italian ancestors. I DO LOVE THIS CHANNEL ON RUclips.
I'm italian and i've Never eat pasta with metaballs so there really exists a place in italy where eats pasta with metaballs 😊😊😊
They also eat pasta with meatballs in Teramo
Yes, but tiny ones. 😉
What a strong and hard working woman! She's right, we've got it alot easier these days with all the new tools and machines that do the labor for us. Broke my heart just a little when she mentioned not being able to afford the meat to cook her dish more often. God bless her. ❤

what a spirit!
This lady is a treasure. I wish I had my mother to help her in the kitchen
When grandma serves food, no matter what's really the portion size, in her eyes it's always small, so you can some more ^^
Long live Maria💕💕💕 And at the end of the day the most relaxing activity is watching Grannies for me

I’m falling in love with every nonna and nonno in each video! What a wonderful project ❤️❤️❤️
Guardo con piacere questo programma perchè lo trovo ben fatto nella sua semplicità, le nonne sono tanto tenere e questo tramandare le tradizioni, ha un valore immenso, certo quando venite nella mia terra, La Calabria, tanto meglio!
One can only dream of being 98 years old like this.
As I nurse my frozen shoulder, I’m envious of this Nonna having more strength and resilience than I will ever have! I can’t even lift my arm, and she’s chopping wood? Lol!
Nice one , actually I’m really depressed right now, lost a coworker. very devastating , Needed someone to talk to.
Che meraviglia! adoro il vostro canale e tutte le nonne! Ahimè io non ho conosciuto le mie ma vedere queste mi riempie il cuore!! Quanta cultura! love your channel 😄
WE WANT MORE OF MARIETTA!!!!!!
yay! teary eyed listening to her stories of hard work in her day

Every week, these videos are a treasured treat. Thank you. I can't imagine anyone who doesn't watch with a big smile on their face.
There is so much Glory of God in the presence of Ms. Marietta. Indeed, only Jesus Christ is all knowing.
She is almost 100 years old but looks like 60. The meal looks delicious but She is the Star ⭐ of the show. May God bless her with many more years to come, to pass on her wisdom.
My good mom`s name is also Marieta, and my name is Mario because of her. May God bless all the Mariettas, whether with one t or two.
I really enjoy your content. Its refreshing to watch something wholesome.
All these grannies are treasures, thanks for sharing
My dad's mother lived a very similar life before emigrating to America late in life. My father tells us all the time the same stories of hardship like Marietta - Italians now eat meat all day. This was just a dream before 1960.
Watching these amazing videos makes me miss my late yiayia ( grandmother in Greek). Also all the old Greek people that i know that they live past 90 , they been working outdoors all their lives , at the fields or at the sea and eating fresh home made food . So i think those are the secrets for a long life , be near the nature and eating fresh well made food!,
Just like my Nonna would make, keep up with the Content, keep our heritage alive
I love these Nonnas so much. What role models they are
After watching one of your videos, I wanted to make my own pasta. It’s not easy. But it was so nice, and I’ll do it again. And thank you for all your videos.
I'm glad you've been inspired! best wishes, Vicky
Marietta ♥ and thanks to the channel for making these videos, letting us learn a little from these many great Nonne :-)
You can tell she is a fun grandma
What a wonderful woman! I shall be so lucky to be like her at her age.
She is so lovely and adorable.
Jesus kept this granny young!! Keeping this in mind :)) thank you for sharing this recipe and ways to keep healthy! Really enjoy watching.
