When I first listened to this I had no idea it was about addiction. Years later. Many years later the lyrics finally click with me after my own run in with addiction.
Thank you for sharing that story, i wish you stay free from any addiction for the rest of your life. It's never a solution, just one more problem. Strong soul you have
Clean from heroin 3/12/19..the friend who showed me this song is dead now along with many others.. the song is based on a woman, a widow, in their neighborhood. She died and while helping move belongings they read her diary not knowing what it was, they read the first page then closed it after realizing. At least that's the myth. And why the song is inexplicably called "the widow"
This song, like the rest of the album, was actually based on a Diary that a taxi driver friend found, that described the life of L'Via, hija de MIranda. She gave up her child, and was addicted to Heroin. The man the song is referring to is the pusher. She's a widow, her husband dying in a war previously. Now, she's a prostitute to support the drug's, it frees her from all the shame, because she will never sleep alone... Awesome album.
This describes how I saw heroin....... most evil life eating beast. When I sense a relapse coming I listen to this. The "look at how they flock to him from an isle of open sores" reminds me how disgusting that life was and to never ever go back. freaks me out and love it. Thank you for this! ❤️❤️❤️
Navigator what a terrible thing to say, so only if an addict is good looking then it’s a waste? I was an H addict and i totally get what she said and sympathize.
That part when he sings: “Oh Lord Said I’m, Said I’m, Said I’m, said I’m Bloodshot for sure Proceeds with guitar awesomeness “Pale runs the ghost “ 🔥🔥🔥
I was addicted to H when i first heared this Song.. and the lyrics just fell into place. Now im listening again, after being clean from H for soon 10yrs. It sends me back, to the bad, the good, those horrible nights, that warm feeling, the emptyness. Such a good song
My cousin showed me this song years ago. I lost him on Nov. 16th last year. It feels like fucking ages have passed since then. Sleep in Peace, brother.
My cuzo introduce me to this band a while ago he died last week october 7 been listening to this song brings tears to my eyes i love u cuzo he loved these types of bands awesome song he love mars volta
Damn.....lol!!! Our situations are basically identical, but five years apart. Deftones is my favorite band of all time. But I feel ashamed that I'm 40 and just now really discovering this band. I mean I've heard songs by The Mars Volta in passing and I always thought they were badass, but I should have looked more into the band. Oh well, better late than never I guess! I'm a music junkie and love discovering more bands, whether they're new or old!
"The Widow" is a song by The Mars Volta, from their second album Frances the Mute. The song was first performed in May, 2004 at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles during The Mars Volta's three-night residence closing the tour supporting their debut LP, De-Loused in the Comatorium. At the concert, the song was dedicated to former Mars Volta member Jeremy Michael Ward, who had died of a drug overdose in May 2003.
This entire album (Frances The Mute) is telling the story of a diary that was found in the car of one of their sound men who died from a drug overdose. It's about an adopted man who is depressed and searching for his family, much of it concerns his walk down a path of drugs and mental illness. This song is the first track and thus the intro to the life described by the album.
gnarls Barkley, the mars volta and the red hot chili peppers Dallas, and these guys stoled the entire show! amazing voice and happy to know they are from my home town in el paso...'at the drive in', was performing the other night at a local club...i didn't even try to see if it was too good to be true. I'm sure it was a special night,I great voice.
This song isn’t about addiction, even though a lot of people can relate to it. Mars Volta is one of those bands that makes wild concept albums. This is about a woman in the late 1800s that lost her husband to the Spanish flu, she was so deviated she turned to prostitution to be able to feel anything Free from all the shame then I’ll hide, cause I’ll never sleep alone Saying I’m bloodshot for sure is calling herself a lost cause.
its about a drug addict. The widow is a metaphor to the black widow which eats its mate. The drug (spider) kills (eats) its mate (addict). its a pretty cool comparison i think :D
Any other Volta songs like this one? I've looked everywhere and every other song is completely different than this. It's like it's not even the same band. Shame, cause I'm really diggin' this song.
Listen to the end of deloused in the comatorium; televators into take the veil cerpin taxt kind of have a similar sound to this one when paired together. Also the song 'Desperate Graves'
I don't agree with the other people's suggestions. None of their other songs compare. It's not uncommon among bands. Like if you first heard Disturbed's Sounds of Silence or Darkness THEN listen to the rest of their songs you'll be like WWTTFF??!!?! Or like System of a Down's song Spiders.
never heard a song from this band till this song, wow!!!! i loved it, i have heard of the band like 9 years ago from an old boss who said i looked like the singer of mars volta and i was mars who???? lol, anyways imma start listenin to this group and see whats up, great song
This song has been blasting loudly on REPEAT for over 6 weeks now. I CAN'T GET ENOUGH... I love everything about this song, it reaches out to me, it tells a story, its bluesy and sexy and I would just love to find bands that are similar to this style of music but I can't seem to pin it to any specific category. ANY SUGGESTIONS? I sing this at the top of my lungs in the car playing so loud I just love driving now.
I would say Coheed & Cambria, Circa Survive, anything project with Anthony green, says in a little but they have more punk influence. I mean just Pandora Mars Volta and you can find tons of shit.
This was offered to his sound technician/vocal operator. As a sign of showing honor. They made a song that probably meant that they've already moved on. They say he died in drug addiction. In other words, heroin was actually linked into the song. But the main theme wasn't heroin. It was the victim. And the victim was the whole band. Cuz they lost their former member. Well, that's just an opinion though.
That's because they're not focusing about heroin alone. That would encourage the fans to do the same. So they added what happened to their former member as well as what they felt.
He reminds me a lot of Robert Plant. Good on him for making something unique and awesome and not just trying to become "the next Led Zeppelin" or something. Revivalism is pointless. Incredible song.
I still remember bastardizing this song in a poorly-made parody ten months ago. I come back to listen to the band, and here I find one more band to love.
doesnt mean the song is about him in fact they said in an interview that the album is based on a journal a member of the band found on a bus do some research with google and you will find the whole story so i dont have to explain it in a comment on youtube lol
Ok; The Best Romantic Song (FREE ALL THE SHAME👰🏻) 😘 All Times, Thanks My Old English 🙄 Friend Lady for sharing this Beautiful Song (Remember I am not a Native English Speaker), No Infieran Lectores Posiblemente Equivocadamente debido a que DAMITAS Internacionalmente son Seres Espiritualmente Perfectos de Bien Psiconductualmente 🧝🏼♀️.😇
@TheChexer1231 Definitely. A talentless scene kid that has penned the lyrics for four albums, two of which went double platinum, as well as winning an Eisner award for his comic books series, on top of being a caring husband and father. I totally agree with you.
When I first listened to this I had no idea it was about addiction. Years later. Many years later the lyrics finally click with me after my own run in with addiction.
Thank you for sharing that story, i wish you stay free from any addiction for the rest of your life. It's never a solution, just one more problem. Strong soul you have
Oh yea. Definitely about a drug dealer and his customers. More than one Volta member went through a heroin addiction. RIP Jeremy Ward
I had this poster on my wall for a while. I was so amazed I got it home. MSG. GREAT 👍
Same, hits different huh? Lol

GREAT song.
that would suck...having ur diary made into an album for all to hear...
+Alex Martinez Thank you.
+Akeba Lucas or maybe? It was meant to be heard....
Rory Marshall I agree. There's a reason why it fell into the hands of musicians, especially Mars Volta.
Honestly one of the greatest vocalists to pick up a mic
he reminds me of robert plant. and if i could only hear him and LP collab.......
@@violentbenevolence TMV are as Zepplinesque as it gets. Fuck that Greta Van Fleet shit.

I'm glad this song speaks to you. I lost a friend to heroin a little over a year ago.
If it's you on that picture it would be a real waste.
I havent stop listening to this song in a month
Navigator what a terrible thing to say, so only if an addict is good looking then it’s a waste?
I was an H addict and i totally get what she said and sympathize.
@@CSSuser that's pretty shallow man.
That part when he sings:

🔥🔥🔥
Amazing song brings chills down my spine.
i love deftones, dude
You're handsome af
AMEN BROTHER!
One of the most under-appreciated bands ever.
I was addicted to H when i first heared this Song.. and the lyrics just fell into place. Now im listening again, after being clean from H for soon 10yrs.
It sends me back, to the bad, the good, those horrible nights, that warm feeling, the emptyness.

It's hard to listen to this without bursting into tears!
I know...
🥺🤘🏻😇
masterpiece. realy its go strait to heart.
My cousin showed me this song years ago. I lost him on Nov. 16th last year. It feels like fucking ages have passed since then. Sleep in Peace, brother.
Rest in Peace. Nov 16th 2024, I’ll sing this loud as hell for him and you today.
Love this song! My son got me into them back in the day and I still listen
What a great song. Cedric has an awesome voice...
My cuzo introduce me to this band a while ago he died last week october 7 been listening to this song brings tears to my eyes i love u cuzo he loved these types of bands awesome song he love mars volta
It's amazing how clearly, succinctly, MV can portray emotion. THEY KNEW.
This song needs to last about 20 mins, like an old school Zeppelin jam. srsly.
The solo SCREAMS Jimmy
Yes it does!
Cedric's vocals are also Robert Plant-esque
It feels like having a one life experience that never last...
Agreed
This is ssuch an incredible song. It drew me in from the first time I heard many many years ago
It is, after all those years :)
I can't stop listening to this song! My only criticism is it should be longer.
Was just introduced to these guys a few days ago and I'm angry at myself for not knowing of them sooner.
+Sinister Ducky One of music's best kept secrets.
I'm angry at you too. Fuck you.
It's never too late, bish!
Lasna34
Cedric has been teasing a possible return!
Yea Cedric and Omar have both already said that they'll definitely get back together one day. Till then, just enjoy the ATDI reunion.
This song is amazing I've never heard of these guys. Im a deftones fanatic but i need to give these dudes a shot.
You might wanna check out 'At the drive in' or 'Antemasque' too. Omar is in both. Haven't listened to Deftones in ages - thanks for the suggestion x
Televators and Eriatarka are good ones.
And Flea played trumpet on this track while Frusciante played the solos on L'Via L'Viaquez.
Deftones ♥️♥️♥️

The entire album is haunted.

Damn this song is good.
When I first heard it, I was hooked.
VERY expressive.
The first time I heard this song was 2001 or 2002.. and it's still awesome!

She lost one drug and replaced it with another.
Cedric's voice 😍😍😍
If you like this check out At the Drive In ... Their first band.
Arcesenal- at the drive in. I'm from texas btw.
They're good, but the Zeppelin element is missing from ATDI
its about a drug addict. The widow is a metaphor to the black widow which eats its mate. The drug (spider) kills (eats) its mate (addict). its a pretty cool comparison i think :D
wow i can imagine so many things happening wuith this song..........it takes me to another level!!!!!!!!!!!
There is SO much emotion in this song. I would like to talk to the man that wrote it. I don't understand the lyrics.
almosttttt forgot how much I love these guys.
Best concert I´ve ever been at...

Shelly Jones Radiohead is another good band that has very epic songs like this.
Shelly Jones Also what he said, although circa survive is a bit more screaming and heavier typically.
If you compare it to this song, that is.
Thanks Guys!
I'm a huge fan of Coheed already... Circa Survive I am just now liking a lot, and Radiohead. Pandora was a great idea also!
Radio Moscow, you will not be disappointed
